Complex dielectric spectroscopy (frequency range 5 Hz–13 MHz) has been used to analyse the frequency, temperature and bias‐field dependences of the molecular dynamics of a very high‐spontaneous‐polarization ferroelectric liquid crystalline material exhibiting SmA, SmC* and unknown SmX smectic phases. Different smectic phase transition temperatures have been observed from the study of the temperature dependence of the dielectric strength and the relaxation frequency. The phase transition temperatures (crystalline to isotropic phases) have also been described very accurately from the temperature‐dependent symmetric and asymmetric shape parameters of the relaxation function and also the dc conductivity. In a planar aligned cell, two symmetric modes (Goldstone mode and domain mode) have been observed in both the SmX and SmC* phases. One asymmetric mode (X‐mode) observed in the SmC* and SmA phases could be related to the interaction of dipoles of the ferroelectric liquid crystals being affected by the surface of the cell. The soft mode, which usually appears very close to the SmC*–SmA phase transition was not observed until the bias field was applied. The second order nature of the SmC*–SmA phase transition was revealed.  相似文献

We describe dielectric spectroscopy measurements on dispersions of two thermotropic liquid crystals (5CB and 8CB) in a poly(dimethylsiloxane) matrix. 5CB exhibits nematic and isotropic phases, while 8CB exhibits smectic, nematic, and isotropic phases. The spectra of the dispersions exhibit a temperature-dependent dielectric relaxation in the interval from 100 to 1000 Hz, with relaxation times that depend strongly on whether the dispersed phase is isotropic, nematic, or smectic. The dielectric relaxation times also depend on the viscosity of the matrix fluid. These results suggest a coupling between the electric field and the mechanics of the interface that affects the spectrum of the dispersed phase and shifts the Maxwell-Wagner interfacial polarization peak.  相似文献

We report the dielectric relaxation behaviour in the antiferroelectric SmCA* and ferrielectric SmCγ* phases of the antiferroelectric liquid crystal 4-[5-(4-octloxyphenyl)-2-pyrimidinyl]phenyl 4,4,4-trifluoro-3-(methoxyphenyl)butanoate which shows an antiferroelectric transition at around 88±0.1°C. In the SmCA* phase, two dielectric relaxation modes have been found, namely the usual antiferroelectric Goldstone mode and another arising from molecular rotation around its short axis. In the SmCγ* phase, one dielectric relaxation mode has been observed due to the ferrielectric Goldstone mode. Dielectric increments and relaxation frequencies of the antiferroelectric and ferrielectric phases are estimated from the fits of the Cole–Cole function of the dielectric spectrum. The dependence of the bias field in the ferrielectric phase is also discussed.  相似文献

Experimental studies of the dielectric relaxation in the nematic and isotropic phases of 4-cyanophenyl 4-n-heptylbenzoate have been performed in the frequency range from 1 kHz to 1 GHz. In the nematic phase, measurements of the complex dielectric permittivity for two orientations of the director n , parallel and perpendicular to the measuring electric field E , have been carried out. It has been found that for E n , as well as in the isotropic phase, the dielectric spectra consist of two elementary domains, described by the Cole-Cole equation, whereas for E n three Cole-Cole-type domains can be distinguished. The possible molecular reorientational movements corresponding to these domains are discussed and comparison with the theoretical predictions is made.  相似文献

Abstract

The non-linear dielectric relaxation spectroscopy has been recently developed and applied to soft materials such as polymers. We have applied this new method to the S*C phases of some ferroelectric liquid crystals. Under a weak AC electric field, the original and third order harmonic frequency components of electric displacement are proportional to the first and third powers of the applied electric field, respectively. The linear spectrum obtained from the original frequency component shows the relaxation of Debye type and the third order non-linear spectrum shows the relaxation with an extended form of Debye type to the non-linear case. The third order non-linear dielectric increment is found to be negative, which implies that the dielectric non-linearity of the liquid crystal in the S*C phase is due to the saturation of molecular dipole moments induced by the applied electric field. The temperature dependence of the linear and third order non-linear spectra in the S*C phase are also studied. Both spectra do not change their forms much through the whole temperature range of the S*C phase. In the vicinity of the SA–S*C transition temperature, the critical behaviour is more remarkable in the third order spectrum than in the linear one.  相似文献

The temperature‐ and electric field‐dependent dielectric relaxation and polarisation of a new chiral swallow tailed antiferroelectric liquid crystal, i.e. 1‐ethylpropyl (S)‐2‐{6‐[4‐(4′‐decyloxyphenyl)benzoyloxy]‐2‐naphthyl}propionate (abbreviated as EP10PBNP), were investigated. The electric field‐induced dielectric loss spectra of EP10PBNP revealed electroclinic and anomalous dielectric behaviour in the chiral smectic A (SmA*)–chiral antiferroelectric smectic C (SmCA*) pre‐transitional regime. From an analysis of thermal hysteresis of the dielectric constant, electric field‐induced polarisation and dielectric loss spectra, the appearance of a ferrielectric‐like mesophase is observed followed by an unstable SmCA* phase in the SmA*–SmCA* pre‐transitional regime.  相似文献

New compound showing a direct SmA*–SmCA* phase transition was synthesised. As far as authors know there are a few pure compounds showing para- and antiferroelectric phases without SmC* between them. Direct current (DC) field applied into a planar-oriented cell induces ferroelectric SmC* phase in an investigated compound. Typical for SmC*, Goldstone mode starts to be detectable. DC field also shifts down the temperature of a SmCA* phase creation. Moreover, modes in the appearing antiferroelectic phase are enhanced by DC field. This paper shows and discusses relations between modes detected in SmA*, SmCA* and SmC* (SmC* phase – nucleated by DC field) phases. Parameters of observed modes are calculated using the Cole–Cole relaxation model and a calculation procedure useful especially for high frequency relaxations (higher than 200 kHz).  相似文献

Switching and dielectric relaxation phenomena were investigated for an antiferroelectric liquid crystal, 4,4‐(1‐methyloctyloxycarbonyl)phenyl]‐4′‐[3‐(butanoyloxy)prop‐1‐oxy]biphenyl carboxylate, exhibiting chiral smectic A (SmA*), smectic C (SmC*) and antiferroelectric (SmCA*) phases. Spontaneous polarisations, rotational viscosities, relaxation frequencies, dielectric strengths and distribution parameters were determined as a function of temperature. The electric field required for saturation of the spontaneous polarisation increased with a decrease in temperature. In the SmA* phase, only one relaxation mechanism was observed that behaves as soft mode. Two relaxation processes were detected in the SmC* phase. A high‐frequency relaxation process invariant at 2.2 kHz was due to a Goldstone mode, but the origin of low‐frequency relaxation process (1–20 Hz) is unclear; however, it may belong to an X‐mode. The dielectric spectrum of the SmCA* phase exhibits two absorption peaks separated by two decades of frequency. The low‐frequency peak is related to the antiferroelectric Goldstone mode, whereas the high‐frequency peak originates from the anti‐phase fluctuation of the directors in the anti‐tilt pairs of the SmCA* phase.  相似文献

A new perovskite‐like coordination polymer [(CH3)2NH2][Cd(N3)3] is reported which undergoes a reversible ferroelastic phase transition. This transition is due to varied modes of motion of the [(CH3)2NH2]+ guest accompanied by a synergistic deformation of the [Cd(N3)3]? framework. The unusual two‐staged switchable dielectric relaxation reveals the molecular dynamics of the polar cation guest, which are well controlled by the variable confined space of the host framework. As the material switches from the ferroelastic phase to the paraelastic phase, a remarkable increase of the rotational energy barrier is detected. As a result, upon heating at low temperature, this compound shows a notable change from a low to a high dielectric state in the ferroelastic phase. This thermoresponsive host–guest system may serve as a model compound for the development of sensitive thermoresponsive dielectric materials and may be key to understanding and modulating molecular/ionic dynamics of guest molecules in confined space.  相似文献

The electro-optic and complex dielectric behaviour of an antiferroelectric liquid crystal 4-(1-methylheptyloxycarbonyl)phenyl 4′-(n-butanoyloxyprop-1-oxy)biphenyl-4-carboxylate, having chiral SmCA* and hexatic smectic phases, have been investigated. Complex dielectric permittivities were measured as a function of frequency, d.c. bias field and temperature. Spontaneous polarization was measured by the current reversal technique; tilt angle was measured under a polarizing microscope using a low frequency electric field. The electro-optic properties and dielectric behaviour of the material are compared with results obtained by DSC and polarizing optical microscopy. Dielectric relaxation processes in SmCA* and hexatic smectic phases were determined. The dielectric strength at the SmCA* to hexatic smectic phase transition is discussed in terms of coupling between the long range bond orientational order and smectic C director. It seems from the results of spontaneous polarization and dielectric relaxation spectroscopy that the material might possess an additional phase between the SmCA* and hexatic smectic I* phases.  相似文献

Dielectric properties of four recently formulated room temperature multi-component liquid crystalline mixtures with paraelectric (SmA*), ferroelectric (SmC*) and antiferroelectric (SmC*A) phases have been studied as a function of temperature and frequency. Under planer anchoring condition, dielectric spectroscopy revealed all the characteristic modes: low frequency PL and high frequency PH mode in SmC*A phase, Goldstone mode (GM) in SmC* phase and soft mode (SM) in SmA* phase. Dielectric behaviour has also been studied under the application of DC bias electric field. With bias electric field, we have been able to study the soft mode dielectric behaviour in the SmC* phase. An unknown high frequency mode (X-mode) with and without bias is also observed in SmC* phase. Dielectric results are explained in the light of generalised Landau theory. The mixtures show very high soft mode electroclinic coefficient in the SmA* phase in addition to fast switching in SmC*A and SmC* phases [30].  相似文献

Measurements of the complex dielectric permittivity in the frequency range 30 Hz-13MHz have been made for the chiral smectic C and smectic A phases of the mixture ZLI-3654. In the S*C phase a large contribution to the electric permittivity coming from the Goldstone mode was found. For the pretransitional region S*C-SA, only the soft mode has been detected. It is found that the molecular relaxation originating from the reorientation around the short axis is well separated from the soft mode even in the pretransitional region. The influence of different relaxation modes on the dielectric anisotropy is presented.  相似文献

Experimental studies of dielectric relaxation in the nematic and isotropic phases of 6CB (4-hexyl-4′-cyanobiphenyl) and two mixtures of 6CB perturbed by 160 Å hydrophobic silica aerosil are presented. The measurements have been made from 1 MHz to 1 GHz in the temperature range from 19 to 40°C. For bulk 6CB, the dynamic aspect in the isotropic phase as well as the principal dielectric permittivities ε ∥ * (ω) and ε ┴ * (ω) in the nematic phase have been fully explored. For the mixtures, measurements on the isotropic phase and also on homeotropically aligned samples in the nematic phase have been made, and these results are systematically compared with those for the bulk. The possible molecular reorientational movements corresponding to the different absorption domains in the dielectric spectrum are discussed and compared with the previously proposed interpretations.  相似文献

Abstract : A series of comb-like copolymers and homopolymers containing different liquid-crystalline and perfluoralkyl side chains was studied by frequency and temperature dependent dielectric measurements. The structure and the phase behaviour of the systems were characterized by X-ray scattering and differential scanning calorimetry. The dielectric relaxation spectra of these polymers reflect the molecular mobility in bilayer structures formed by the mesogenic or crystalline side chains. By changing temperature it was possible to investigate the molecular motions in the different phases of the copolymers (smectic-crystalline, smectic-isotropic, and isotropic). The homopolymer containing perfluoralkyl side chains and all copolymers show a β-relaxation at low temperatures, which is assigned to local molecular motions. Above the glass transition temperature, all samples exhibit a segmental (α) relaxation with WLF-like temperature dependence in the activation plots. For the polymers forming LC structures only one relaxation process was detected in all phases, i.e. in the smectic, nematic, and isotropic structure or, in case of the copolymers, in the smectic-crystalline and smectic-isotropic double structures. This process was attributed always to the segmental motions, assisted by tumbling motions of the mesogens. The phase transitions are clearly indicated by discontinuities in the dielectric relaxation times and changes in the relaxation strength Δϵ. The dipole reorientations of the mesogens seem to be more restricted by the crystalline layers in the copolymers as by the smectic order of the LC homopolymers.  相似文献

A polymesomorphic thermal phase‐transition of a macrocyclic amphiphile consisting of aromatic groups and oligoethylene glycol (OEG) chains is reported. The macrocyclic amphiphile exists in a highly‐ordered liquid crystal (LC) phase at room temperature. Upon heating, this macrocycle shows phase‐transition from columnar‐lamellar to nematic LC phases followed by crystallization before melting. Spectroscopic studies suggest that the thermally induced crystallization is triggered by a conformational change at the OEG chains. Interestingly, while the macrocycle returns to the columnar‐lamellar phase after cooling from the isotropic liquid, it retains the crystallinity after cooling from the thermally‐induced crystal. Thanks to this bistability, conductance switching was successfully demonstrated. A different macrocyclic amphiphile also shows an analogous phase‐transition behavior, suggesting that this molecular design is universal for developing switchable and memorizable materials, by means of hysteretic phase‐transition processes.  相似文献

A theoretical analysis of dynamic properties of freely suspended films of a SmC* α phase in an external electric field is performed within the ‘clock’ model, where the interactions up to nextnearest neighbours are considered. It is shown, that for an N-layer film, N amplitude and N phase fluctuation modes are present. The relaxation rates of the amplitude modes are in the MHz region, whereas the phase modes are typically in the kHz region. Magnitudes of the dielectric response and quasielastic light scattering cross-sections for individual modes are calculated as a function of an electric field applied along the smectic layers.  相似文献

Thermodynamical, optical and dielectric characterisation of a material possessing ferroelectric SmC* and hexatic SmB* phases has been carried out. Phase identification has been done by miscibility studies. From the dielectric studies, a relaxation mechanism is observed in the low MHz region of the SmA* phase, which is related to the tilt fluctuation (soft mode) of the directors. In the SmC* phase, another collective relaxation mechanism has been observed in the kHz region, which is related to the phase fluctuation (Goldstone mode) of the directors. In the SmBh* phase, 2-weak relaxation modes are observed in the kHz and MHz frequency range, respectively, due to individual molecular rotations.  相似文献

Dielectric measurements have been carried out on the chiral smectic Cα (SmCα*) phase of a MHPOBC analogous compound. Two relaxation modes have been observed in this phase for planar orientation of the molecules. One process has been observed at frequency lower than that of the soft mode of the chiral smectic A (SmA*) phase. This relaxation process is connected with the helicity of the SmCα* phase. In the high‐frequency region, another relaxation process has been observed in the SmCα* phase for which bias field dependence is similar to that of the soft mode at the SmA*–SmC* phase transition. The experimental observations are in agreement with a recently proposed dielectric theory for the SmCα* phase and theoretical dielectric results obtained by numerical simulations. Thus, we report here experimental verification of two theoretically predicted dielectric modes in the SmCα* phase.  相似文献

Liquid crystal compound N-(4-n-pentyloxybenzalidene) 4′-n-pentylaniline is very interesting because of its rich phase variant, i.e. nematic, smectic A, smectic C, smectic F and smectic G phases. In the present work, temperature- and frequency-dependent dielectric studies on this compound in the homeotropic and planar orientation of molecules have been carried out in the frequency range of 1 Hz–10 MHz. The compound shows negative dielectric anisotropy (i.e. Δε < 0). Dielectric studies have shown three relaxation modes of different origin in various phases of the material. Relaxation frequencies of the observed modes follow Arrhenius behaviour. The relaxation due to interfacial polarisation, i.e. Maxwell–Wagner–Sillars effect has been observed in the nematic and isotropic phases. A relaxation mode due to the fluctuation of molecular tilt resembling the soft mode has been detected in the smectic A phase with pre- and post-transitional effects. Another mode due to the fluctuation of molecules about their short axes has been detected in the nematic and smectic A, C, F and G phases. Activation energies and ionic conductivity of these phases have also been determined.  相似文献
