A catalytic polymer multilayer shell motor has been developed, which effects fast motion‐based separation of charged organics in water. The shell motors are fabricated by sputtering platinum onto the exposed surface of silica templates embedded in Parafilm, followed by layer‐by‐layer assembly of polyelectrolyte multilayers to the templates. The catalytic shell motors display high bubble propulsion with speeds of up to 260 μm s?1 (13 body lengths per second). Moreover, the polyelectrolyte multilayers assembled at high pH (pH>9.0) adsorb approximately 89 % of dye molecules from water, owing to the electrostatic interaction between the positively charged polymers and the anionic dye molecules, and subsequently release them at neutral pH in a microfluidic device. The efficient propulsion coupled with the effective adsorption behavior of the catalytic shell motors in a microfluidic device results in accelerated separation of organics in water and thus holds considerable promise for water analysis.  相似文献

A novel concept of an iridium‐based bubble‐propelled Janus‐particle‐type graphene micromotor with very high surface area and with very low catalyst loading is described. The low loading of Ir catalyst (0.54 at %) allows for fast motion of graphene microparticles with high surface area of 316.2 m2 g?1. The micromotor was prepared with a simple and scalable method by thermal exfoliation of iridium‐doped graphite oxide precursor composite in hydrogen atmosphere. Oxygen bubbles generated from the decomposition of hydrogen peroxide at the iridium catalytic sites provide robust propulsion thrust for the graphene micromotor. The high surface area and low iridium catalyst loading of the bubble‐propelled graphene motors offer great possibilities for dramatically enhanced cargo delivery.  相似文献

Engineering self‐propelled micromotors with good biocompatibility and biodegradability for actively seeking disease sites and targeted drug transport remains a huge challenge. In this study, neutrophils with intrinsic chemotaxis capability were transformed into self‐guided hybrid micromotors by integrating mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs) with high loading capability. To ensure the compatibility of neutrophil cells with drug‐loaded MSNs, bacteria membranes derived from E. coli were coated on MSNs in advance by a camouflaging strategy. The resulting biohybrid micromotors inherited the characteristic chemotaxis capability of native neutrophils and could effectively move along the chemoattractant gradients produced by E. coli . Our studies suggest that this camouflaging approach, which favors the uptake of MSNs into neutrophils without loss of cellular activity and motility, could be used to construct synthetic nanoparticle‐loaded biohybrid micromotors for advanced biomedical applications.  相似文献

Hybrid micromotors capable of both chemically powered propulsion and fuel‐free light‐driven actuation and offering built‐in optical brakes for chemical propulsion are described. The new hybrid micromotors are designed by combining photocatalytic TiO2 and catalytic Pt surfaces into a Janus microparticle. The chemical reactions on the different surfaces of the Janus particle hybrid micromotor can be tailored by using chemical or light stimuli that generate counteracting propulsion forces on the catalytic Pt and photocatalytic TiO2 sides. Such modulation of the surface chemistry on a single micromotor leads to switchable propulsion modes and reversal of the direction of motion that reflect the tuning of the local ion concentration and hence the dominant propulsion force. An intermediate Au layer (under the Pt surface) plays an important role in determining the propulsion mechanism and operation of the hybrid motor. The built‐in optical braking system allows “on‐the‐fly” control of the chemical propulsion through a photocatalytic reaction on the TiO2 side to counterbalance the chemical propulsion force generated on the Pt side. The adaptive dual operation of these chemical/light hybrid micromotors, associated with such control of the surface chemistry, holds considerable promise for designing smart nanomachines that autonomously reconfigure their propulsion mode for various on‐demand operations.  相似文献

Photothermal therapy based on gold nanostructures has been widely investigated as a state‐of‐the‐art noninvasive therapy approach. Because single nanoparticles cannot harvest sufficient energy, self‐assemblies of small plasmonic particles into large aggregates are required for enhanced photothermal performance. Self‐assembled gold nanorods in lipid bilayer‐modified microcapsules are shown to localize at tumor sites, generate vapor bubbles under near‐infrared light exposure, and subsequently damage tumor tissues. The polyelectrolyte multilayer enables dense packing of gold nanorods during the assembly process, which leads to the formation of vapor bubbles around the excited capsules. The resulting vapor bubbles achieve a high efficiency of suppressing tumor growth compared to single gold nanorods. In vivo experiments demonstrated the ability of soft‐polymer multilayer microcapsules to cross the biological barriers of the body and localize at target tissues.  相似文献

A micromotor‐based strategy for energy generation, utilizing the conversion of liquid‐phase hydrogen to usable hydrogen gas (H2), is described. The new motion‐based H2‐generation concept relies on the movement of Pt‐black/Ti Janus microparticle motors in a solution of sodium borohydride (NaBH4) fuel. This is the first report of using NaBH4 for powering micromotors. The autonomous motion of these catalytic micromotors, as well as their bubble generation, leads to enhanced mixing and transport of NaBH4 towards the Pt‐black catalytic surface (compared to static microparticles or films), and hence to a substantially faster rate of H2 production. The practical utility of these micromotors is illustrated by powering a hydrogen–oxygen fuel cell car by an on‐board motion‐based hydrogen and oxygen generation. The new micromotor approach paves the way for the development of efficient on‐site energy generation for powering external devices or meeting growing demands on the energy grid.  相似文献

The synthesis of an innovative self‐propelled Janus nanomotor with a diameter of about 75 nm that can be used as a drug carrier is described. The Janus nanomotor is based on mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs) with chromium/platinum metallic caps and propelled by decomposing hydrogen peroxide to generate oxygen as a driving force with speeds up to 20.2 μm s?1 (about 267 body lengths per second). The diffusion coefficient (D) of nanomotors with different H2O2 concentrations is calculated by tracking the movement of individual particles recorded by means of a self‐assembled fluorescence microscope and is significantly larger than free Brownian motion. The traction of a single Janus MSN nanomotor is estimated to be about 13.47×10?15 N. Finally, intracellular localization and drug release in vitro shows that the amount of Janus MSN nanomotors entering the cells is more than MSNs with same culture time and particle concentrations, meanwhile anticancer drug doxorubicin hydrochloride loaded in Janus MSNs can be slowly released by biodegradation of lipid bilayers in cells.  相似文献

Self‐propelled miniaturized machines harness the chemical potential of their environment for movement. Locomotion of chemically powered micromotors have been hugely dependent on the surroundings. The use of pH to alter the mobility of micromotors is demonstrated in this work through the manipulation of hydrogen peroxide chemistry in different acidity/alkalinity. The sequential addition of sodium hydroxide to increase the pH of the solution led to a consequent increase in activity of micromotors. Meanwhile, addition of hydrochloric acid compromised the structural integrity of the microstructures, culminating in locomotive changes. Such dramatic changes in activity and velocities of the micromotors allow the usage of this behavior for pH detection. This concept was illustrated with Janus silver micromotors and tubular bimetallic Cu/Pt micromotors. Alteration of pH serves as a useful general strategy for increasing hydrogen peroxide decomposition for enhanced oxygen‐bubble propulsion in catalytic micromotors.  相似文献

A light‐driven multifunctional Janus micromotor for the removal of bacterial endotoxins and heavy metals is described. The micromotor was assembled by using the biocompatible polymer polycaprolactone for the encapsulation of CdTe or CdSe@ZnS quantum dots (QDs) as photoactive materials and an asymmetric Fe3O4 patch for propulsion. The micromotors can be activated with visible light (470–490 nm) to propel in peroxide or glucose media by a diffusiophoretic mechanism. Efficient propulsion was observed for the first time in complex samples such as human blood serum. These properties were exploited for efficient endotoxin removal using lipopolysaccharides from Escherichia coli O111:B4 as a model toxin. The micromotors were also used for mercury removal by cationic exchange with the CdSe@ZnS core–shell QDs. Cytotoxicity assays in HeLa cell lines demonstrated the high biocompatibility of the micromotors for future detoxification applications.  相似文献

The effects of ionic strength and solvent polarity on the equilibrium distribution of fluorescein (FL) and FITC-dextran between the interior of polyelectrolyte multilayer microcapsules filled with negatively charged strong polyelectrolyte and the bulk solution were systematically investigated. A negatively charged strong polyelectrolyte, poly(styrene sulfonate) (PSS), used for CaCO3 core fabrication, was entrapped inside the capsules. Due to the semipermeability of the capsule wall, a Donnan equilibrium between the inner solution within the capsules and the bulk solution was created. The equilibrium distribution of the negatively charged permeants was investigated by means of confocal laser scanning microscopy as a function of ionic strength and solvent polarity. The equilibrium distribution of the negatively charged permeants could be tuned by increasing the bulk ionic strength to decrease the Donnan potential. Decreasing the solvent polarity also could enhance the permeation of FL, which induces a sudden increase of permeation when the ethanol volume fraction was higher than 0.7. This is mainly attributed to the precipitation of PSS. A theoretical model combining the Donnan equilibrium and Manning counterion condensation was employed to discuss the results.  相似文献

By using a combination of atomic force and confocal microscopy, we explore the deformation properties of multilayer microcapsules filled with a solution of strong polyelectrolyte. Encapsulation of polyelectrolyte was performed by regulation of the multilayer shell permeability in water-acetone solutions. The "filled"capsules prepared by this method were found to be stiffer than "hollow" ones, which reflects the contribution of the excess osmotic pressure to the capsule stiffness. The force-deformation curves contain three distinct regimes of reversible, partially reversible, and irreversible deformations depending on the degree of compression. The analysis of the shape of compressed capsules and of the inner polyelectrolyte spacial distribution allowed one to relate the deformation regimes to the permeability of the multilayer shells for water and inner polyelectrolyte at different stage of compression.  相似文献

The engineering of self‐propelled micro‐/nanomotors (MNMs) with continuously variable speeds, akin to macroscopic automobiles equipped with a continuously variable transmission, is still a huge challenge. Herein, after grafting with salt‐responsive poly[2‐(methacryloyloxy)ethyltrimethylammonium chloride] (PMETAC) brushes, bubble‐propelled Janus microcapsule motors with polyelectrolyte multilayers exhibited adjustable speeds when the type and concentration of the counterion was changed. Reversible switching between low‐ and high‐speed states was achieved by modulating the PMETAC brushes between hydrophobic and hydrophilic configurations by ion exchange with ClO4? and polyphosphate anions. This continuously variable regulation enabled control of the speed in an accurate and predictable manner and an autonomous response to the local chemical environment. This study suggests that the integration of polymer brushes with precisely adjustable responsiveness offers a promising route for motion control of smart MNMs that act like their counterparts in living systems.  相似文献

We report a microfluidic approach for one‐step fabrication of polyelectrolyte microcapsules in aqueous conditions. Using two immiscible aqueous polymer solutions, we generate transient water‐in‐water‐in‐water double emulsion droplets and use them as templates to fabricate polyelectrolyte microcapsules. The capsule shell is formed by the complexation of oppositely charged polyelectrolytes at the immiscible interface. We find that attractive electrostatic interactions can significantly prolong the release of charged molecules. Moreover, we demonstrate the application of these microcapsules in encapsulation and release of proteins without impairing their biological activities. Our platform should benefit a wide range of applications that require encapsulation and sustained release of molecules in aqueous environments.  相似文献

研究了胶束增强型聚电解质(PAH/PSS和PADA/PSS)胶囊在不同溶液环境中的形貌变化,发现这种新型的胶囊具有迥异于传统聚电解质胶囊的囊壁结构;研究了二维聚电解质复合膜与模板溶解液中嵌段共聚物PS-b-PAA胶束之间的相互作用,发现胶束层可以通过静电力与聚电解质胶囊囊壁相互作用.同时,模拟模板溶出后聚电解质胶囊内部的环境条件,研究了嵌段共聚物胶束在胶囊内部的存在状态及其在透析过程中的变化规律,认为共聚物可以通过疏水作用沉积于聚电解质复合膜的内壁,并通过Ca2+离子的桥联作用稳定,也就是在聚电解质复合膜层基础上又形成了一层胶束层.即这种胶束增强型聚电解质微胶囊的囊壁是由聚电解质层和胶束层所形成的双层结构.用这种双层结构模型,我们合理解释了胶囊在高盐离子浓度下的形貌变化.  相似文献

The design and control of molecular systems that self‐assemble spontaneously and exclusively at or near an interface represents a real scientific challenge. We present here a new concept, an active seed layer that allows to overcome this challenge. It is based on enzyme‐assisted self‐assembly. An enzyme, alkaline phosphatase, which transforms an original peptide, Fmoc‐FFY(PO42?), into an efficient gelation agent by dephosphorylation, is embedded in a polyelectrolyte multilayer and constitutes the “reaction motor”. A seed layer composed of a polyelectrolyte covalently modified by anchoring hydrogelator peptides constitutes the top of the multilayer. This layer is the nucleation site for the Fmoc‐FFY peptide self‐assembly. When such a film is brought in contact with a Fmoc‐FFY(PO42?) solution, a nanofiber network starts to form almost instantaneously which extents up to several micrometers into the solution after several hours. We demonstrate that the active seed layer allows convenient control over the self‐assembly kinetics and the geometric features of the fiber network simply by changing its peptide density.  相似文献

Inspired by transient devices, transient self‐destroying micromotors that are propelled by metal–water/acid reactions and autonomously disappear after completing their tasks have emerged as promising tools for diverse applications. Such transient machines require careful selection of the metal matrix and well‐designed architectures for effective propulsion and customized functionality. In particular, recent advances in transient micromotors based on the active metals Zn, Fe, and Mg are introduced here. First, the fundamental design principles of transient micromotors are discussed. We describe a mobile CO2 scrubbing platform that offers a greatly accelerated biomimetic sequestration based on a self‐propelled carbonic anhydrase (CA) functionalized micromotor. The CO2 hydration capability of CA is coupled with the rapid movement of catalytic micromotors, and along with the corresponding fluid dynamics, results in a highly efficient mobile CO2 scrubbing microsystem. The continuous movement of CA and enhanced mass transport of the CO2 substrate lead to significant improvements in the sequestration efficiency and speed over stationary immobilized or free CA platforms. This system is a promising approach to rapid and enhanced CO2 sequestration platforms for addressing growing concerns over the buildup of greenhouse gas.  相似文献

Extraction of nucleic acids in microsystems is of significance for biomedical applications, but the current extraction methods generally require sophisticated microchannels and external equipment, hindering their practical applications. In this work, we have demonstrated a simple, versatile and efficient approach to extract nucleic acids in microsystems by developing cationic branched polyethyleneimine (PEI)‐functionalized tubular micromotors. The as‐developed tubular micromotors are fabricated by a two‐step process combining the template‐assisted electrodeposition and carbodiimide chemistry, and contain an inner catalytic Pt layer, a middle magnetic Ni layer and an outer cationic PEI layer. They exhibit autonomous bubble‐propelled motion in aqueous hydrogen peroxide solutions, which can be guided by an external magnetic field, and the surface charges can be reversibly modulated by changing the pH value of the solution. Consequently, the as‐developed tubular micromotors can selectively absorb nucleic acids from acidic solutions and desorb them into alkaline solutions, leading to the extraction of nucleic acids with high efficiency without external stirring. Furthermore, they can be operated in a microchannel chip without the aid of a pumping system. Our results indicate that this PEI‐functionalized tubular micromotor platform provides a novel, simple and versatile microsystem nucleic acid extraction technology, holding considerable promise for important practical applications.  相似文献

The self‐assembly and characterization of water‐soluble calix[4]arene‐based molecular capsules ( 1?2 ) is reported. The assemblies are the result of ionic interactions between negatively charged calix[4]arenes 1 a and 1 b , functionalized at the upper rim with amino acid moieties, and a positively charged tetraamidiniumcalix[4]arene 2 . The formation of the molecular capsules is studied by 1H NMR spectroscopy, ESI mass spectrometry (ESI‐MS), and isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC). A molecular docking protocol was used to identify potential guest molecules for the self‐assembled capsule 1 a?2 . Experimental guest encapsulation studies indicate that capsule 1 a?2 is an effective host for both charged (N‐methylquinuclidinium cation) and neutral molecules (6‐amino‐2‐methylquinoline) in water.  相似文献

We report a thermoresponsive poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) brush functionalized Janus Au–Pt bimetallic micromotor capable of modulating the direction of motion with the change of the ambient temperature. The PNIPAM@Au–Pt micromotor moved along the Au–Pt direction with a speed of 8.5 μm s?1 in 1.5 % H2O2 at 25 °C (below the lower critical solution temperature (LCST) of PNIPAM), whereas it changed the direction of motion (i.e., along the Pt–Au direction) and the speed decreased to 2.3 μm s?1 at 35 °C (above LCST). Below LCST, PNIPAM brushes grafted on the Au side were hydrophilic and swelled, which permitted the electron transfer and proton diffusion on the Au side, and thus the motion is regarded as a self‐electrophoretic mechanism. However, PNIPAM brushes above LCST became hydrophobic and collapsed, and thus the driving mechanism switched to the self‐diffusiophoresis like that of Pt‐modified Janus silica motors. These motors could reversibly change the direction of motion with the transition of the hydrophobic and hydrophilic states of the grafted PNIPAM brushes. Such a thermoresponsive polymer brush functionalization method provides a new strategy for engineering the kinematic behavior of phoretically driven micro/nanomotors.  相似文献
