Cellulose‐based polymer brushes with variable grafting densities and low dispersity were synthesized by grafting poly(n‐butyl acrylate) (PBA) side chains from cellulose‐derived backbones via ATRP. Esterification of commercially available cellulose acetate with 2‐bromoisobutyryl bromide (2‐BiBB) in NMP provided cellulose‐based macroinitiators averaging one initiation site per double glucose unit. ATRP macroinitiators averaging up to 6 initiation sites per repeating double glucose unit were prepared by acylation of microcrystalline cellulose (MCC) in LiCl/DMAc solvent system with 2‐BiBB. A series of linear macroinitiators with narrow MWD were obtained by fractional precipitation process. The content of initiating sites was determined by elemental analysis. (Meth)acrylate side chains were then grafted from the cellulose‐based macroinitiators. The prepared cellulose‐based polymer brushes showed tunable degradation rates dependent on grafting density of the brush, following two different degradation pathways, either cleavage of the main chain or detachment of the side chains. © 2019 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Cellulose‐based macroinitiators with predetermined number of initiation sites were synthesized by acylation of microcrystalline cellulose AVICEL PH‐101 with 2‐bromoisobutyryl bromide under homogeneous reaction conditions in the N,N‐dimethylacetamide/LiCl solvent system. The influence of different methods of cellulose activation on acylation efficiency and reproducibility was investigated. Best results were obtained using thermal activation under reduced pressure or the newly introduced protocol based on solvent exchange to 1,4‐dioxane. Prepared macroinitiators were used for grafting with styrene and methyl methacrylate (MMA) using optimized atom transfer radical polymerization reaction conditions to achieve well‐controlled polymerizations with high initiation efficiency. For MMA grafting, the initiation efficiency was shown to be dependent on certain reaction conditions, such as type of solvent, monomer concentration, or the presence of a sacrificial initiator. In addition, single‐electron transfer living radical polymerization with Cu(0) as the catalyst was used for the first time to prepare cellulose‐graft‐polystyrene and cellulose‐graft‐poly(MMA) copolymers in a homogeneous phase. In summary, homogeneous reaction conditions, stoichiometric control in the preparation of macroinitiators, and controlled grafting jointly allowed for an extensive control of copolymers architecture, that is, density of grafting, composition, and molecular parameters of grafts. Moreover, some of the prepared copolymers were characterized by static and dynamic light scattering and microscopic techniques (transmission electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy). © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A series of comb-like poly(phenylene oxide)s (PPO) graft copolymers with controlled grafting density and length of grafts were synthesized by atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). The α-bromo-poly(2,6-dimethyl-1,4-phenylene oxide)s (BPPO) were used as macroinitiators to polymerize vinyl monomers and the graft copolymers carrying polystyrene (PS), poly(p-acetoxystyrene) (PAS), and poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) as side chains were synthesized and characterized by NMR, FTIR, GPC, DSC and TGA. The composition-dependent glass-transition temperatures (Tg) of PPO-g-PS exhibited good correlation with theoretical curve in Couchman equations except for the cases of low PS content (<40 mol%) copolymers in which a positive deviation was observed due to enhanced molecular interactions. The increase in monomer/initiator ratio led to the increase of degree of polymerization and the decrease of polydispersity. Despite the immiscibility nature between PPO and PMMA, the PPO-g-PMMA exhibited enhanced compatibilization as apparent single Tg in a wide temperature window throughout various compositions revealing an efficient segmental mixing on a molecular scale due to grafting structure.  相似文献

Vinyl acetate and vinyl chloroacetate were copolymerized in the presence of a bis(trifluoro‐2,4‐pentanedionato)cobalt(II) complex and 2,2′‐azobis(4‐methoxy‐2,4‐dimethylvaleronitrile) at 30 °C, forming a cobalt‐capped poly(vinyl acetate‐co‐vinyl chloroacetate). The addition of 2,2,6,6‐tetramethyl‐1‐piperidinyloxy after a certain degree of copolymerization was reached afforded 2,2,6,6‐tetramethyl‐1‐piperidinyloxy‐terminated poly(vinyl acetate‐co‐vinyl chloroacetate) (PVOAc–MI; number‐average molecular weight = 31,000, weight‐average molecular weight/number‐average molecular weight = 1.24). A 1H NMR study of the resulting PVOAc–MI revealed quantitative terminal 2,2,6,6‐tetramethyl‐1‐piperidinyloxy functionality and the presence of 5.5 mol % vinyl chloroacetate in the copolymer. The atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) of styrene (St) was studied with ethyl chloroacetate as a model initiator and five different Cu‐based catalysts. Catalysts with bis(2‐pyridylmethyl)octadecylamine (BPMODA) or tris(2‐pyridylmethyl)amine (TPMA) ligands provided the highest initiation efficiency and best control over the polymerization of St. The grafting‐from ATRP of St from PVOAc–MI catalyzed by copper complexes with BPMODA or TPMA ligands provided poly(vinyl acetate)‐graft‐polystyrene copolymers with relatively high polydispersity (>1.5) because of intermolecular coupling between growing polystyrene (PSt) grafts. After the hydrolysis of the graft copolymers, the cleaved PSt side chains had a monomodal molecular weight distribution with some tailing toward the lower number‐average molecular weight region because of termination. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Densely grafting copolymers of ethyl cellulose with polystyrene and poly(methyl methacrylate) were synthesized through atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). First, the residual hydroxyl groups on the ethyl cellulose reacted with 2‐bromoisobutyrylbromide to yield 2‐bromoisobutyryloxy groups, known to be an efficient initiator for ATRP. Subsequently, the functional ethyl cellulose was used as a macroinitiator in the ATRP of methyl methacrylate and styrene in toluene in conjunction with CuBr/N,N,N′,N″,N″‐pentamethyldiethylenetriamine as a catalyst system. The molecular weight of the graft copolymers increased without any trace of the macroinitiator, and the polydispersity was narrow. The molecular weight of the side chains increased with the monomer conversion. A kinetic study indicated that the polymerization was first‐order. The morphology of the densely grafted copolymer in solution was characterized through laser light scattering. The individual densely grafted copolymer molecules were observed through atomic force microscopy, which confirmed the synthesis of the densely grafted copolymer. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Surface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) was used to graft hydrophilic comb-like poly((poly(ethylene glycol) methyl ether methacrylate), or P(PEGMA), brushes from chloromethylated poly(phthalazinone ether sulfone ketone) (CMPPESK) membrane surfaces. Prior to ATRP, chloromethylation of PPESK was beforehand performed and the obtained CMPPESK was prepared into porous membranes by phase inversion process. It was demonstrated that the benzyl chloride groups on the CMPPESK membrane surface afforded effective macroinitiators to graft the well-defined polymer brushes. Attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared (ATR-FTIR) spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) confirmed the grafting of P(PEGMA) chains. Water contact angle measurements indicated that the introduction of P(PEGMA) graft chains promoted remarkably the surface hydrophilicity of PPESK membranes. The effects of P(PEGMA) immobilization on membrane morphology, permeability and fouling resistance were investigated. It was found that the comb-like P(PEGMA) grafts brought smaller pore diameters and higher solute rejections to PPESK membranes. The results of dynamic anti-fouling experiments showed the anti-fouling ability of the membranes was significantly improved after the grafting of P(PEGMA) brushes.  相似文献

Poly(methyl methacrylate)s with terminal bromine atom, prepared by bromination of anionically polymerized MMA, were used as ATRP macroinitiators giving di- and triblock copolymers with MMA, styrene and butyl acrylate blocks. Multifunctional ATRP macroinitiators were synthesized by introducing bromomethyl or 2-bromoacyloxy groups onto the main chain of polystyrene or poly(4-methyl styrene) and used for ATRP grafting of tert-butyl acrylate leading to densely grafted copolymers with more or less uniform grafts.  相似文献

Poly(ethylene‐g‐styrene) and poly(ethylene‐g‐methyl methacrylate) graft copolymers were prepared by atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). Commercially available poly(ethylene‐co‐glycidyl methacrylate) was converted into ATRP macroinitiators by reaction with chloroacetic acid and 2‐bromoisobutyric acid, respectively, and the pendant‐functionalized polyolefins were used to initiate the ATRP of styrene and methyl methacrylate. In both cases, incorporation of the vinyl monomer into the graft copolymer increased with extent of the reaction. The controlled growth of the side chains was proved in the case of poly(ethylene‐g‐styrene) by the linear increase of molecular weight with conversion and low polydispersity (Mw /Mn < 1.4) of the cleaved polystyrene grafts. Both macroinitiators and graft copolymers were characterized by 1H NMR and differential scanning calorimetry. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Polym Sci A: Polym Chem 38: 2440–2448, 2000  相似文献

Here, we present the first example of application of single‐electron transfer living radical polymerization (SET‐LRP) process to a controlled grafting of cellulose esters, cellulose diacetate (CDA), and cellulose acetate butyrate (CAB). The cellulose ester macroinitiators with various functionality densities have been prepared by acylation of the backbones with 2‐bromoisobutyryl (BrIB) and dichloroacetyl (DCA) groups, respectively. Methacrylate monomers were polymerized using DCA‐functionalized macroinitiators in the presence of pentamethyldiethylene triamine as a ligand. At 30 °C, the reaction is rather slow, reaching about 10% conversion after 3 to 6 h of polymerization, whereas the higher temperature (60 °C) perceptibly speeds up the polymerization so that methyl methacrylate (MMA) conversion is ~30% after 5 h. Graft copolymers with random‐type and diblock‐type grafts having amphiphilic character were also synthesized. For acrylate grafting (BuA and t‐BuA), BrIB‐functionalized macroinitiators are more convenient in a combination with a low concentration of Cu(0) and Me6TREN as a ligand and polymerization is detectably faster even at the lower temperature than that of MMA. Kinetic studies show “living” character of both the graftings. Important advantages of SET‐LRP, compared with classic ATRP, are (i) higher polymerization rate, (ii) lower extent of recombination of the growing grafts and (iii) negligible coloration of the products with catalytic residua, so that the prepared polymers do not require additional careful purification. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Amphiphilic block copolymers of methyl methacrylate (MMA) and sodium styrene sulfonate (SSNa) were successfully synthesized via direct atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) of SSNa. First, poly(sodium styrene sulfonate) (PSSNa) or poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) macroinitiators were prepared using proper ATRP systems for each case. In some cases, functional initiators, which allow further reactions, were used. The macroinitiators were characterized and further used to synthesize PSSNa/PMMA block copolymers, by using proper solvent combinations, such as N,N-dimethylformamide/water or methanol/water at appropriate volume ratios, in order to ensure solubility of the synthesized amphiphilic copolymers. The molecular weight of the copolymers was determined by gel permeation chromatography, using water as eluent. By using a combination of analytical techniques like 1H NMR, FTIR and thermogravimetry, the chemical structure and the actual copolymer composition were determined. Since, the block copolymers were soluble in water, forming hydrophilic/hydrophobic domains in aqueous solution, their micellization behavior was further studied by pyrene fluorescence probing.  相似文献

A series of ferrocene‐based well‐defined amphiphilic graft copolymers, consisting of hydrophilic poly[poly(ethylene glycol) methyl ether acrylate] (PPEGMEA) backbone and hydrophobic poly(2‐acryloyloxyethyl ferrocenecarboxylate) (PAEFC) side chains were synthesized by successive single‐electron‐transfer living radical polymerization (SET‐LRP) and atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). The backbone was prepared by SET‐LRP of PEGMEA macromonomer, and it was then treated with lithium di‐isopropylamide and 2‐bromopropionyl bromide at ?78 °C to give PPEGMEA‐Br macroinitiator. The targeted well‐defined graft copolymers with narrow molecular weight distributions (Mw/Mn ≤ 1.32) were synthesized via ATRP of AEFC initiated by PPEGMEA‐Br macroinitiator, and the molecular weights of the backbone and side chains were both controllable. The electro‐chemical behaviors of graft copolymers were studied by cyclic voltammetry, and it was found that graft copolymers were more difficult to be oxidized, and the reversibility of electrode process became less with raising the content of PAEFC segment. The effects of the preparation method, the length of hydrophobic PAEFC segment, and the initial water content on self‐assembly behavior of PPEGMEA‐g‐PAEFC graft copolymers in aqueous media were investigated by transmission electron microscopy. The morphologies of micelles could transform from cylinders to spheres or rods with changing the preparation condition and the length of side chains. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A series of copolymers composed of methoxy poly(ethylene glycol) and a hydrophobic block of poly(ɛ-caprolactone-co-propargyl carbonate) grafted with poly(2-[dimethylamino]ethyl methacrylate) was synthesized by combining ring opening polymerization, azide-alkyne click reaction, and atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). Well-defined copolymers with a target composition and a tailored structure were achieved via the grafting from approach by using a single catalytic system for both click reaction and ATRP. Kinetic studies demonstrated the controlled/living character of the employed polymerization methods. The thermal properties and self-assembly in aqueous medium of the graft copolymers were dependent on their composition. The resulting polymeric materials showed low cytotoxicity toward L929 cells, demonstrating their potential for biomedical applications. This type of materials containing cationic side chains tethered to biocompatible and biodegradable segments could be the basis for promising candidates as drug and gene delivery systems.  相似文献

Tetrakis bromomethyl benzene was used as a tetrafunctional initiator in the synthesis of four‐armed star polymers of methyl methacrylate via atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) with a CuBr/2,2 bipyridine catalytic system and benzene as a solvent. Relatively low polydispersities were achieved, and the experimental molecular weights were in agreement with the theoretical ones. A combination of 2,2,6,6‐tetramethyl piperidine‐N‐oxyl‐mediated free‐radical polymerization and ATRP was used to synthesize various graft copolymers with polystyrene backbones and poly(t‐butyl methacrylate) grafts. In this case, the backbone was produced with a 2,2,6,6‐tetramethyl piperidine‐N‐oxyl‐mediated stable free‐radical polymerization process from the copolymerization of styrene and p‐(chloromethyl) styrene. This polychloromethylated polymer was used as an ATRP multifunctional initiator for t‐butyl methacrylate polymerization, giving the desired graft copolymers. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Cellulose was first grafted with glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) in an ionic liquid via atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) and then the introduced epoxy groups were reacted with ethanediamine (EDA) to obtain an amino adsorbent. The grafting copolymer and the obtained adsorbent were characterized by FTIR, aH NMR, TEM and SEM. The results showed that the grafted copolymers had grafted polymer chains with well-controlled molecu- lar weight and polydispersity, the polymerization was a controlled system. The cellulose adsorbent had numerous micropores on the surface and showed high performance for Cr(VI) adsorption. The adsorption behavior was pH dependent and the sorption equilibrium was achieved within 2 h on the adsorbent.  相似文献

A novel series of polyphosphazene-grafl-polystyrene (PP-g-PS) copolymers were successfully prepared by atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) of styrene monomers and brominated poly(bis(4-methylphenoxy)phosphazene) macroinitiator. The graft density and the graft length could be regulated by changing the bromination degree of the macroinitiator and the ATRP reaction time, respectively. The PP-g-PS copolymers readily underwent a regioselective sulfonation reaction, which occurred preferentially at the polystyrene sites, producing the sulfonated PP-g-PS copolymers with a range of ion exchange capacities. The resulting sulfonated PP-g-PS membranes prepared by solution casting showed high water uptake, low water swelling and considerable proton conductivity. They also exhibited good oxidative stability and high resistance to methanol crossover. Morphological studies of the membranes by transmission electron microscopy showed clear nanophase-separated structures resulted from hydrophobic polyphosphazene backbone and hydrophilic polystyrene sulfonic acid segments, indicating the formation of proton transferring tunnels. Therefore, these sulfonated copolymers may be candidate materials for proton exchange membranes in direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC) applications.  相似文献

Abstract

PVC-(n-propyl xanthate) macroinitiators (PVC-nPX) with different fractions of xanthate groups were synthesized in THF/acetone solutions from PVC and potassium n-propyl xanthate (nPX). Methyl methacrylate (MMA) was grafted onto PVC-nPX macroinitiators using UV light of 254, 302, and 366 nm at 20 and 40°C. Reaction time was 1, 3, or 5 hours. Graft copolymerization and UV homopolymerization took place at the same time. Grafting was the most effective at a wavelength of 302 nm with a weight gain of copolymerization of up to 45%. The grafted copolymers were separated from the mixture by selective precipitation of THF solutions with hot ethanol and extraction with hot ethanol. The mechanism of grafting is discussed on the basis of the molecular weight of copolymers, on the quantity of homopolymers, on the structure of copolymers, and on the UV absorption of end groups.  相似文献

A new “grafting from” strategy for grafting of different monomers (methacrylates, acrylates, and acrylamide) on poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) backbone is designed using atom transfer radical coupling (ATRC) and atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). 4‐Hydroxy TEMPO moieties are anchored on PVDF backbone by ATRC followed by attachment of ATRP initiating sites chosen according to the reactivity of different monomers. High graft conversion is achieved and grafting of poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) exhibits high degree of polymerization (DPn = 770) with a very low graft density (0.18 per hundred VDF units) which has been increased to 0.44 by regenerating the active catalyst with the addition of Cu(0). A significant impact on thermal and stress–strain property of graft copolymers on the graft density and graft length is noted. Higher tensile strain and toughness are observed for PVDF‐g‐PMMA produced from model initiator but graft copolymer from pure PVDF exhibits higher tensile strength and Young's modulus. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Densely grafted copolymers were synthesized using the “grafting from” approach via the combination of reversible addition‐fragment chain transfer polymerization (RAFT) and atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). First, a novel functional monomer, 2,3‐di(2‐bromoisobutyryloxy)ethyl acrylate (DBPPA), with two initiating groups for ATRP was synthesized. It was then polymerized via RAFT polymerization to give macroinitiators for ATRP with controlled molecular weights and narrow molecular weight distributions. Last, ATRP of styrene was carried out using poly(DBPPA)s as macroinitiators to prepare comblike poly(DBPPA)‐graft‐polystyrenes carrying double branches in each repeating unit of backbone via “grafting from” approach. Furthermore, poly(DBPPA)‐graft‐[polystyrene‐block‐poly(t‐BA)]s and their hydrolyzed products poly(DBPPA)‐graft‐[polystyrene‐block‐poly(acrylic acid)]s were also successfully prepared. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
