We form squares from the product of integers in a short interval [n, n + tn], where we include n in the product. If p is prime, p|n, and (2p) > n, we prove that p is the minimum tn. If no such prime exists, we prove tn √5n when n> 32. If n = p(2p − 1) and both p and 2p − 1 are primes, then tn = 3p> 3 √n/2. For n(n + u) a square > n2, we conjecture that a and b exist where n < a < b < n + u and nab is a square (except n = 8 and N = 392). Let g2(n) be minimal such that a square can be formed as the product of distinct integers from [n, g2(n)] so that no pair of consecutive integers is omitted. We prove that g2(n) 3n − 3, and list or conjecture the values of g2(n) for all n. We describe the generalization to kth powers and conjecture the values for large n.  相似文献

In this paper we consider the variable coefficient equation ut=b(t)uux+a(t)uxx which among other applications has considerable interest in nonlinear acoustics. We present transformation properties of this generalised equation. In particular, we classify the Lie classical symmetries, the nonclassical symmetries, the potential symmetries, point and potential form preserving transformations. Finally, using these transformations we give examples of exact solutions.  相似文献

Let {pk}k≥3 be a sequence of nonnegative integers which satisfies 8 + Σk≥3 (k-4) pk = 0 and p4p3. Then there is a convex 4-valent polytope P in E3 such that P has exactly pk k-gons as faces. The inequality p4p3 is the best possible in the sense that for c < 1 there exist sequences that are not 4-realizable that satisfy both 8 + Σk ≥3 (k - 4) pk = 0 and p4 > cp3. When Σk ≥ 5 pk ≠ 1, one can make the stronger statement that the sequence {pk} is 4-reliazable if it satisfies 8 + Σk ≥ 3 (k - 4) pk = 0 and p4 ≥ 2Σk ≥ 5 pk + max{k ¦ pk ≠ 0}.  相似文献

It has been shown by Lei, in his recent paper, that there exists a large set of Kirkman triple systems of order uv (LKTS(uv)) if there exist an LKTS(v), a TKTS(v) and an LR(u), where a TKTS(v) is a transitive Kirkman triple system of order v, and an LR(u) is a new kind of design introduced by Lei. In this paper, we improve this product construction by removing the condition “there exists a TKTS(v)”. Our main idea is to use transitive resolvable idempotent symmetric quasigroups instead of TKTS. As an application, we can combine the known results on LKTS and LR-designs to obtain the existence of an LKTS(3nm(2·13n1+1)(2·13nt+1)) for n1, m{1,5,11,17,25,35,43,67,91,123}{22r+125s+1 : r0,s0}, t0 and ni1 (i=1,…,t).  相似文献

A q × n array with entries from 0, 1,…,q − 1 is said to form a difference matrix if the vector difference (modulo q) of each pair of columns consists of a permutation of [0, 1,… q − 1]; this definition is inverted from the more standard one to be found, e.g., in Colbourn and de Launey (1996). The following idea generalizes this notion: Given an appropriate δ (-[−1, 1]t, a λq × n array will be said to form a (t, q, λ, Δ) sign-balanced matrix if for each choice C1, C2,…, Ct of t columns and for each choice = (1,…,t) Δ of signs, the linear combination ∑j=1t jCj contains (mod q) each entry of [0, 1,…, q − 1] exactly λ times. We consider the following extremal problem in this paper: How large does the number k = k(n, t, q, λ, δ) of rows have to be so that for each choice of t columns and for each choice (1, …, t) of signs in δ, the linear combination ∑j=1t jCj contains each entry of [0, 1,…, q t- 1] at least λ times? We use probabilistic methods, in particular the Lovász local lemma and the Stein-Chen method of Poisson approximation to obtain general (logarithmic) upper bounds on the numbers k(n, t, q, λ, δ), and to provide Poisson approximations for the probability distribution of the number W of deficient sets of t columns, given a random array. It is proved, in addition, that arithmetic modulo q yields the smallest array - in a sense to be described.  相似文献

We partially characterize the rational numbers x and integers n 0 for which the sum ∑k=0 knxk assumes integers. We prove that if ∑k=0 knxk is an integer for x = 1 − a/b with a, b> 0 integers and gcd(a,b) = 1, then a = 1 or 2. Partial results and conjectures are given which indicate for which b and n it is an integer if a = 2. The proof is based on lower bounds on the multiplicities of factors of the Stirling number of the second kind, S(n,k). More specifically, we obtain for all integers k, 2 k n, and a 3, provided a is odd or divisible by 4, where va(m) denotes the exponent of the highest power of a which divides m, for m and a> 1 integers.

New identities are also derived for the Stirling numbers, e.g., we show that ∑k=02nk! S(2n, k) , for all integers n 1.  相似文献

Let G be a graph of order n, and let a and b be integers such that 1a<b. Let δ(G) be the minimum degree of G. Then we prove that if δ(G)(k−1)a, n(a+b)(k(a+b)−2)/b, and |NG(x1)NG(x2)NG(xk)|an/(a+b) for any independent subset {x1,x2,…,xk} of V(G), where k2, then G has an [a,b]-factor. In this note, we assume that t has the probability density function p(t) which is positive and lower-semicontinuous over the real line, but not necessarily Gaussian, then the geometric ergodicity of the ARCH(p) process is proved under Et2 = 1. When t has only the first-order absolute moment, a sufficient condition for the geometric ergodicity is also given.  相似文献

In this paper we propose a general approach by which eigenvalues with a special property of a given matrix A can be obtained. In this approach we first determine a scalar function ψ: C → C whose modulus is maximized by the eigenvalues that have the special property. Next, we compute the generalized power iterations uinj + 1 = ψ(A)uj, j = 0, 1,…, where u0 is an arbitrary initial vector. Finally, we apply known Krylov subspace methods, such as the Arnoldi and Lanczos methods, to the vector un for some sufficiently large n. We can also apply the simultaneous iteration method to the subspace span{x(n)1,…,x(n)k} with some sufficiently large n, where x(j+1)m = ψ(A)x(j)m, j = 0, 1,…, m = 1,…, k. In all cases the resulting Ritz pairs are approximations to the eigenpairs of A with the special property. We provide a rather thorough convergence analysis of the approach involving all three methods as n → ∞ for the case in which A is a normal matrix. We also discuss the connections and similarities of our approach with the existing methods and approaches in the literature.  相似文献

We model the evolution of a single-species population by a size-dependent branching process Zt in discrete time. Given that Zt = n the expected value of Zt+1 may be written nexp(r − γn) where r> 0 is a growth parameter and γ > 0 is an (inhibitive) environmental parameter. For small values of γ the short-term evolution of the normed process γZt follows the deterministic Ricker model closely. As long as the parameter r remains in a region where the number of periodic points is finite and the only bifurcations are the period-doubling ones (r in the beginning of the bifurcation sequence), the quasi-stationary distribution of γZt is shown to converge weakly to the uniform distribution on the unique attracting or weakly attracting periodic orbit. The long-term behavior of γZt differs from that of the Ricker model, however: γZt has a finite lifetime a.s. The methods used rely on the central limit theorem and Markov's inequality as well as dynamical systems theory.  相似文献

The parametric resource allocation problem asks to minimize the sum of separable single-variable convex functions containing a parameter λ, Σi = 1ni(xi + λgi(xi)), under simple constraints Σi = 1n xi = M, lixiui and xi: nonnegative integers for i = 1, 2, …, n, where M is a given positive integer, and li and ui are given lower and upper bounds on xi. This paper presents an efficient algorithm for computing the sequence of all optimal solutions when λ is continuously changed from 0 to ∞. The required time is O(GMlog2 n + n log n + n log(M/n)), where G = Σi = 1n ui − Σi = 1n li and an evaluation of ƒi(·) or gi(·) is assumed to be done in constant time.  相似文献

The R(m,n) equations utt+a(un)xx+b(um)xxtt=0 (a, b const) are investigated by using some ansatze. As a result, new exact solitary patterns solutions and solitary wave solutions are obtained. These obtained solutions show that not only the nonlinearly dispersive R(m,m) equations (m≠1) but also the linearly dispersive R(1,n) equations (m=1) possess solitary patterns solutions, which has infinite slopes or cusps and solitary wave solutions.  相似文献

In a simple digraph, a star of degree t is a union of t edges with a common tail. The k-domination number γk(G) of digraph G is the minimum number of stars of degree at most k needed to cover the vertex set. We prove that γk(T)=n/(k+1) when T is a tournament with n14k lg k vertices. This improves a result of Chen, Lu and West. We also give a short direct proof of the result of E. Szekeres and G. Szekeres that every n-vertex tournament is dominated by at most lg n−lglg n+2 vertices.  相似文献

Here, for σ]0 means Ω[, u* (respectively, (b|{u=u*(σ)})*) denotes the decreasing rearrangement of u (respectively b restricted to the set {u = u*(σ)}) and |E| denotes the Lebesgue measure of a set E included in a domain Ω.
