We introduce new measures of non-compactness for the embeddingoperator Ep,q():Lp1() Lq() and describe their relations withthe essential norm of Ep, q(), ‘local’ isoperimetricand isocapacitary constants. An explicit formula for the essentialnorm of Ep, q() is obtained for domains with a power cusp onthe boundary and bounded C1 domains. The Neumann problem fora particular Schrödinger operator is discussed on domainswith a power cusp.  相似文献

Suppose that K is a closed, total cone in a real Banach spaceX, that A:XX is a bounded linear operator which maps K intoitself, and that A' denotes the Banach space adjoint of A. Assumethat r, the spectral radius of A, is positive, and that thereexist x00 and m1 with Am(x0)=rmx0 (or, more generally, thatthere exist x0(–K) and m1 with Am(x0)rmx0). If, in addition,A satisfies some hypotheses of a type used in mean ergodic theorems,it is proved that there exist uK–{0} and K'–{0}with A(u)=ru, A'()=r and (u)>0. The support boundary of Kis used to discuss the algebraic simplicity of the eigenvaluer. The relation of the support boundary to H. Schaefer's ideasof quasi-interior elements of K and irreducible operators Ais treated, and it is noted that, if dim(X)>1, then thereexists an xK–{0} which is not a quasi-interior point. The motivation for the results is recent work of Toland, whoconsidered the case in which X is a Hilbert space and A is self-adjoint;the theorems in the paper generalize several of Toland's propositions.  相似文献

Let A be an algebra over a field K of characteristic zero andlet 1, ..., sDer K(A) be commuting locally nilpotent K-derivationssuch that i(xj) equals ij, the Kronecker delta, for some elementsx1, ..., xsA. A set of generators for the algebra is found explicitly and a set of defining relationsfor the algebra A is described. Similarly, let 1, ..., s AutK(A)be commuting K-automorphisms of the algebra A is given suchthat the maps i – idA are locally nilpotent and i (xj)= xj + ij, for some elements x1, ..., xs A. A set of generatorsfor the algebra A: = {a A | 1(a) = ... = s(a) = a} is foundexplicitly and a set of defining relations for the algebra Ais described. In general, even for a finitely generated non-commutativealgebra A the algebras of invariants A and A are not finitelygenerated, not (left or right) Noetherian and a minimal numberof defining relations is infinite. However, for a finitely generatedcommutative algebra A the opposite is always true. The derivations(or automorphisms) just described appear often in many differentsituations (possibly) after localization of the algebra A.  相似文献

On hearing the shape of a bounded domain with Robin boundary conditions   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
The asymptotic expansions of the trace of the heat kernel (t)= [sum ]j=1 exp(-tj) for small positive t, where {j} j=1 arethe eigenvalues of the negative Laplacian -n = -[sum ]nk=1 (/xk)2in Rn (n = 2 or 3), are studied for a general multiply connectedbounded domain which is surrounded by simply connected boundeddomains i with smooth boundaries i (i = 1,...,m), where smoothfunctions Yi (i = 1,...,m) are assuming the Robin boundary conditions(ni + Yi) = 0 on i. Here /ni denote differentiations along theinward-pointing normals to i (i = 1,...,m). Some applicationsof an ideal gas enclosed in the multiply connected bounded containerwith Neumann or Robin boundary conditions are given.  相似文献

Optimal order H1 and L error bounds are obtained for a continuouspiecewise linear finite element approximation of an obstacleproblem, where the obstacle's height as well as the contactzone, c, are a priori unknown. The problem models the indentationof a membrane by a rigid punch. For R2, given ,g R+ and an obstacle defined over E we consider the minimization of |v|21,+over (v, µ) H10() x R subject to v+µ on E. In additionwe show under certain nondegeneracy conditions that dist (c,hc)Ch ln 1/h, where hc is the finite element approximation toc. Finally we show that the resulting algebraic problem canbe solved using a projected SOR algorithm.  相似文献

An elliptic boundary-value problem on a domain with prescribedDirichlet data on I is approximated using a finite-elementspace of approximation power hK in the L2 norm. It is shownthat the total flux across I can be approximated with an errorof O(hK) when is a curved domain in Rn (n = 2 or 3) and isoparametricelements are used. When is a polyhedron, an O(h2K–2)approximation is given. We use these results to study the finite-elementapproximation of elliptic equations when the prescribed boundarydata on I is the total flux. Let be an open subset of Rd, and let Tp for p[1, ) be consistentC0-semigroups given by kernels that satisfy an upper heat kernelestimate. Denoting their generators by Ap, we show that thespectrum (Ap) is independent of p[1, ). We also treat the caseof weighted Lp-spaces for weights that satisfy a subexponentialgrowth condition. An example shows that independence of thespectrum may fail for an exponential weight. 1991 MathematicsSubject Classification 47D06, 47A10, 35P05.  相似文献

This paper treats the problem of minimizing the norm of vectorfields in L1 with prescribed divergence. The ridge of . playsan important role in the analysis, and in the case where R2is a polygonal domain, the ridge is thoroughly analysed andsome examples are presented. In the case where Rn is a Lipschitzdomain and the divergence is a finite positive Borel measure, the infimum is calculated, and it is shown that if an extremalexists, then it is of the form 1 = –Fd, where F is a nonnegativefunction and d(x) is the distance from x to the boundary .Finally, if R2 is a polygonal domain and the measure is representedby a nonnegative continuous function, then an explicit expressionfor the extremal is given, and it is proven that this extremalis unique.  相似文献

The restrictions Bspq() and Fspq() of the Besov and Triebel–Lizorkinspaces of tempered distributions Bspq(Rn) and Fspq(Rn) to Lipschitzdomains Rn are studied. For general values of parameters (sR,p>0, q>0) a ‘universal’ linear bounded extensionoperator from Bspq() and Fspq() into the corresponding spaceson Rn is constructed. The construction is based on a new variantof the Calderón reproducing formula with kernels supportedin a fixed cone. Explicit characterizations of the elementsof Bspq() and Fspq() in terms of their values in are also obtained.  相似文献

A bifurcation problem governed by the boundary condition II   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
In this work we consider the problem u = a(x)up in on , where is a smooth bounded domain, isthe outward unit normal to , is regarded as a parameter and0 < p < 1. We consider both cases where a(x) > 0 in or a(x) is allowed to vanish in a whole subdomain 0 of . Ourmain results include existence of non-negative non-trivial solutionsin the range 0 < < 1, where 1 is characterized by meansof an eigenvalue problem, uniqueness and bifurcation from infinityof such solutions for small , and the appearance of dead coresfor large enough .  相似文献

A Class of Infinite Dimensional Simple Lie Algebras   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Let A be an abelian group, F be a field of characteristic 0,and , ß be linearly independent additive maps fromA to F, and let ker()\{0}. Then there is a Lie algebra L = L(A,, ß, ) = xA Fex under the product [ex, ey]]=(xy)ex+y+(ß) (x, y) ex+y. If, further, ß() = 1, and ß(A) = Z, thereis a subalgebra L+:=L(A+, , ß, ) = xA+ Fex, whereA+ = {xA|ß(x)0}. The necessary and sufficient conditionsare given for L' = [L, L] and L+ to be simple, and all semi-simpleelements in L' and L+ are determined. It is shown that L' andL+ cannot be isomorphic to any other known Lie algebras andL' is not isomorphic to any L+, and all isomorphisms betweentwo L' and all isomorphisms between two L+ are explicitly described.  相似文献

Let be a fixed open cube in Rn. For r[1, ) and [0, ) we define where Q is a cube in Rn (with sides parallel to the coordinateaxes) and Q stands for the characteristic function of the cubeQ. A well-known result of Gehring [5] states that if (1.1) for some p(1, ) and c(0, ), then there exist q(p, ) and C=C(p,q, n, c)(0, ) such that for all cubes Q, where |Q| denotes the n-dimensional Lebesguemeasure of Q. In particular, a function fL1() satisfying (1.1)belongs to Lq(). In [9] it was shown that Gehring's result is a particular caseof a more general principle from the real method of interpolation.Roughly speaking, this principle states that if a certain reversedinequality between K-functionals holds at one point of an interpolationscale, then it holds at other nearby points of this scale. Usingan extension of Holmstedt's reiteration formulae of [4] andresults of [8] on weighted inequalities for monotone functions,we prove here two variants of this principle involving extrapolationspaces of an ordered pair of (quasi-) Banach spaces. As an applicationwe prove the following Gehring-type lemmas.  相似文献

Let A be a commutative ring. A graded A-algebra U = n0 Un isa standard A-algebra if U0 = A and U = A[U1] is generated asan A-algebra by the elements of U1. A graded U-module F = n0Fnis a standard U-module if F is generated as a U-module by theelements of F0, that is, Fn = UnF0 for all n 0. In particular,Fn = U1Fn–1 for all n 1. Given I, J, two ideals of A,we consider the following standard algebras: the Rees algebraof I, R(I) = n0Intn = A[It] A[t], and the multi-Rees algebraof I and J, R(I, J) = n0(p+q=nIpJqupvq) = A[Iu, Jv] A[u, v].Consider the associated graded ring of I, G(I) = R(I) A/I =n0In/In+1, and the multi-associated graded ring of I and J,G(I, J) = R(I, J) A/(I+J) = n0(p+q=nIpJq/(I+J)IpJq). We canalways consider the tensor product of two standard A-algebrasU = p0Up and V = q0Vq as a standard A-algebra with the naturalgrading U V = n0(p+q=nUp Vq). If M is an A-module, we havethe standard modules: the Rees module of I with respect to M,R(I; M) = n0InMtn = M[It] M[t] (a standard R(I)-module), andthe multi-Rees module of I and J with respect to M, R(I, J;M) = n0(p+q=nIpJqMupvq) = M[Iu, Jv] M[u, v] (a standard R(I,J)-module). Consider the associated graded module of M withrespect to I, G(I; M) = R(I; M) A/I = n0InM/In+1M (a standardG(I)-module), and the multi-associated graded module of M withrespect to I and J, G(I, J; M) = R(I, J; M) A/(I+J) = n0(p+q=nIpJqM/(I+J)IpJqM)(a standard G(I, J)-module). If U, V are two standard A-algebras,F is a standard U-module and G is a standard V-module, thenF G = n0(p+q=nFp Gq) is a standard U V-module. Denote by :R(I) R(J; M) R(I, J; M) and :R(I, J; M) R(I+J;M) the natural surjective graded morphisms of standard RI) R(J)-modules. Let :R(I) R(J; M) R(I+J; M) be . Denote by :G(I) G(J; M) G(I, J; M) and :G(I, J; M) G(I+J; M) the tensor productof and by A/(I+J); these are two natural surjective gradedmorphisms of standard G(I) G(J)-modules. Let :G(I) G(J; M) G(I+J; M) be . The first purpose of this paper is to prove the following theorem.  相似文献

If is a smooth space curve, we consider the family of projectionsof from a variable point not on to a fixed plane. For a residualset of curves , this family versally unfolds those singularitiesthat occur in it. To obtain a family of curves which is open as well as densein the space of smooth maps, we must compactify the parameterspace, so we study curves in real projective space, and includeprojections from points of the curve itself. If is smoothlyembedded, the projection CP of from is a well-defined smooth curve, and for generic the family CP has generic singularities. However, when the point of projection moves off , the projectionvaries discontinuously. We define a family of plane curves, parametrised by the blow-up X of P3 along , such that for apoint in the exceptional locus lying over , we have the union of the projection CP of from P and a straight line L through the image of the tangentat P. A key result asserts that this is a flat family. We givean explicit list of restrictions on the family CP L (the keycondition is that the total contact order of CP with L neverexceeds 2), and show that these hold for a dense open set ofcurves , and that if they do hold, there is a neighbourhoodU of , such that the family of projections from points of is generic. Combining this list of conditions with those obtained previouslygives a natural definition of a dense set of space curves ,for which the complete family of projections has generic singularities, and we show that this set is also open. Packing, Tiling, Orthogonality and Completeness   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
Let Rd be an open set of measure 1. An open set DRd is calleda ‘tight orthogonal packing region’ for if DDdoes not intersect the zeros of the Fourier transform of theindicator function of , and D has measure 1. Suppose that isa discrete subset of Rd. The main contribution of this paperis a new way of proving the following result: D tiles Rd whentranslated at the locations if and only if the set of exponentialsE = {exp 2i, x: } is an orthonormal basis for L2(). (This resulthas been proved by different methods by Lagarias, Reeds andWang [9] and, in the case of being the cube, by Iosevich andPedersen [3]. When is the unit cube in Rd, it is a tight orthogonalpacking region of itself.) In our approach, orthogonality ofE is viewed as a statement about ‘packing’ Rd withtranslates of a certain non-negative function and, additionally,we have completeness of E in L2() if and only if the above-mentionedpacking is in fact a tiling. We then formulate the tiling conditionin Fourier analytic language, and use this to prove our result.2000 Mathematics Subject Classification 52C22, 42B99, 11K70.  相似文献

For an l x k matrix A = (aij) of integers, denote by L(A) thesystem of homogenous linear equations ai1x1 + ... + aikxk =0, 1 i l. We say that A is density regular if every subsetof N with positive density, contains a solution to L(A). Fora density regular l x k matrix A, an integer r and a set ofintegers F, we write if for any partition F = F1 ... Fr there exists i {1, 2,..., r} and a column vector x such that Ax = 0 and all entriesof x belong to Fi. Let [n]N be a random N-element subset of{1, 2, ..., n} chosen uniformly from among all such subsets.In this paper we determine for every density regular matrixA a parameter = (A) such that limn P([n]N (A)r)=0 if N =O(n) and 1 if N = (n). 1991 Mathematics Subject Classification:05D10, 11B25, 60C05  相似文献

We prove a nearly optimal bound on the number of stable homotopytypes occurring in a k-parameter semi-algebraic family of setsin R, each defined in terms of m quadratic inequalities. Ourbound is exponential in k and m, but polynomial in . More precisely,we prove the following. Let R be a real closed field and let = {P1, ... , Pm} R[Y1, ... ,Y,X1, ... ,Xk], with degY(Pi) 2, degX(Pi) d, 1 i m. Let S R+k be a semi-algebraic set, defined by a Boolean formula without negations, with atoms ofthe form P 0, P 0, P . Let : R+k Rk be the projection onthe last k coordinates. Then the number of stable homotopy typesamongst the fibers Sx = –1(x) S is bounded by (2mkd)O(mk).  相似文献

This characterizes thesequences of distinct, positive real numbers for which span{l, x1, x2, ...} is dense in C[0,1]. The novelty of this result is the treatment of the mostdifficult case when infii = 0 while supii = . The paper settlesthe L and L1 cases of the following. THEOREM (Full Müntz Theorem in Lp[0,1]).
