The mechanics of detachment of a rigid solid from an elastic wavy surface has been analyzed in a recent article, in which the axisymmetric case of a sphere and the plane strain case of a cylinder were considered. Due to the qualitative similarities, the discussion was limited to the axisymmetric case only. It was shown that the surface waviness makes the detachment process proceed in alternating stable and unstable segments and each unstable jump dissipates mechanical energy. As a result, the external work and the peak force required to separate a wavy interface are higher than the corresponding values for a flat interface, i.e., waviness causes interface toughening as well as strengthening. In this paper, a systematic experimental investigation is presented which examines the above theoretical analysis, by measuring adhesion between a “rigid” wavy punch and a soft “elastic” material, which is a block of gelatin here. The observed increase in adhesion due to waviness closely agrees with the theoretical predictions within the experimental and material uncertainties. The experiments not only validate the theory, but also demonstrate that adhesion of a soft material can be substantially enhanced by topographic optimization alone, without modifying the surface chemistry.  相似文献

We consider an elastic body with a rigid inclusion and a crack located at the boundary of the inclusion. It is assumed that nonpenetration conditions are imposed at the crack faces which do not allow the opposite crack faces to penetrate each other. We analyze the variational formulation of the problem and provide shape and topology sensitivity analysis of the solution in two and three spatial dimensions. The differentiability of the energy with respect to the crack length, for the crack located at the boundary of rigid inclusion, is established.  相似文献

The contact problem of a rubber half-space dented by a rigid cone apex   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
Summary  The smooth contact of a rubber half-space dented by a rigid cone apex is analyzed based on the large deformation theory. The problem is treated as an axially symmetric case, and the material is assumed to be incompressible. The asymptotic equations for the domain near the apex are derived. They are solved analytically for the shrinking domain, while a numerical solution is found for the expanding domain in the vicinity of the stress singularity. The purpose of this paper is not only to solve a typical problem but also to provide an analytical method to solve a large-strain problem with a singular point. The mechanics of detachment between a wavy elastic half space and a rigid solid is considered. Solutions for the axisymmetric problem of a rigid sphere and the plane strain problem of a rigid cylinder detaching from a wavy surface are developed. The interacting solids are taken to be in complete contact over a finite area initially. It is shown that the surface waviness makes the detachment process unstable, with the interface separating in alternating stable and unstable segments. Each unstable segment dissipates mechanical energy, leading to an increase in the total work of separation compared to that of a flat surface. Further, waviness causes the maximum separation force or the pull-off force to increase during detachment, resulting in an apparent toughening of the interface. This mechanism provides an alternative explanation to the experimental observations in the literature that roughness can sometimes lead to increase in pull-off force. It also illustrates the role of roughness in the attachment capability of several insect feet possessing soft pads. The basic solution presented here can be used to analyze the detachment of surfaces with multiple scale roughness as well. The solution also suggests strategies to improve reversible adhesion of a soft material by designing optimal surface topographies.  相似文献

The dynamics of non-smooth oscillators has not yet sufficiently been investigated, when damping is simultaneously due to friction and impact. Because of the theoretical and practical interest of this type of systems, an effort is made in this paper to lighten the behaviour of a single-degree-of-freedom oscillator colliding with an obstacle and excited by a moving base, which transfers energy to the system via friction. The different nature of discontinuities arising in the combined problem of friction and impact has been recognized and discussed. Closed-form solutions are presented for both transient and steady-state response, assuming Coulomb's friction law and a rigid stop-limiting motion. Furthermore, a deformable (hysteretic) obstacle has been considered, and its influence on the response has been investigated.  相似文献

Starting from the 3D Signorini problem for a family of elastic elliptic shells, we justify that the obstacle problem of an elastic elliptic membrane is the right approximation posed in a 2D domain, when the thickness tends to zero. Specifically, we provide convergence results in the scaled and de-scaled formulations.  相似文献

A contact problem for an infinitely long hollow cylinder is considered. The cylinder is compressed by an outer rigid ring with a circular profile. The material of the cylinder is linearly elastic and isotropic. The extent of the contact region and the pressure distribution are sought. Governing equations of the elasticity theory for the axisymmetric problem in cylindrical coordinates are solved by Fourier transforms and general expressions for the displacements are obtained. Using the boundary conditions, the formulation is reduced to a singular integral equation. This equation is solved by using the Gaussian quadrature. Then the pressure distribution on the contact region is determined. Numerical results for the contact pressure and the distance characterizing the contact area are given in graphical form. An exact solution to the problem of indentation with friction of a rigid cylinder into an elastic half-space is presented. The corresponding boundary-value problem is formulated in planar bipolar coordinates, and reduced to a singular integral equation with respect to the unknown normal stress in the slip zones. An exact analytical solution of this equation is constructed using the Wiener-Hopf technique, which allowed for a detailed analysis of the contact stresses, strain, displacement, and relative slip zone sizes. Also, a simple analytical solution is furnished in the limiting case of full stick between the cylinder and half-space.  相似文献

Torsion of an elastic half-space by a rigid punch is investigated. The boundary of the half-space is assumed to be rough. Two geometries of the punch-parabolic and flat end are considered. It is shown that the contact area consists of stick and slip zones. This fact, which is well-known in the classical torsional contact of the elastic half-space with the smooth surface and the parabolic punch, also holds true for the flat-ended punch if the boundary roughness is involved. The partial slip problems are reduced to the integral equations, which are solved numerically. The presented results show the effects of boundary roughness on the shear stresses, size of the stick area and the relation between the twisting moment and the angle of twist.  相似文献

The paper deals with the estimation of the pressure distribution, the shape of contact and the friction force at the interface of a flat soft elastic solid moving on a rigid half-space with a slightly wavy surface. In this case an unsymmetrical contact is considered and justified with the adhesion hysteresis. For soft solids as rubber and polymers the friction originates mainly from two different contributions: the internal friction due to the viscoelastic properties of the bulk and the adhesive processes at the interface of the two solids. In the paper the authors focus on the latter contribution to friction. It is known, indeed, that for soft solids, as rubber, the adhesion hysteresis is, at least qualitatively, related to friction: the larger the adhesion hysteresis the larger the friction. Several mechanisms may govern the adhesion hysteresis, such as the interdigitation process between the polymer chains, the local small-scale viscoelasticity or the local elastic instabilities. In the paper the authors propose a model to link, from the continuum mechanics point of view, the friction to the adhesion hysteresis. A simple one-length scale roughness model is considered having a sinusoidal profile. For partial contact conditions the detached zone is taken to be a mode I propagating crack. Due to the adhesion hysteresis, the crack is affected by two different values of the strain energy release rate at the advancing and receding edges respectively. As a result, an unsymmetrical contact and a friction force arise. Additionally, the stability of the equilibrium configurations is discussed and the adherence force for jumping out of contact and the critical load for snapping into full contact are estimated.  相似文献

This paper introduces numerical techniques necessary for the implementation of impact maps derived from an energetic impact law for rigid-body impacts with friction at isolated contact points. In particular the work focuses on methodologies for long-term simulation with behaviours such as dynamic transitions and chatter. The methods are based on hybrid event-driven numerical solvers for ordinary differential equations together with system states to deal with the transitions. A slender rod impacting a periodically oscillating surface is used as an example to illustrate implementation and methods. The numerical scheme for the rod system is used to show how symmetry can play an important role in the presence of friction for long-term dynamics. This will show that surface oscillations with low frequencies tend to lead to periodic motions of the rod that are independent of friction. For higher frequencies however the periodic solutions are not that common and irregular motion ensues.  相似文献

The problem of dissipative normal impact of a linearly elastic pseudo-rigid ball on a sinusoidally oscillating rigid foundation is considered. This problem yields a four-dimensional smooth impact map that produces sticking, regular and chaotic responses. Parameter values that furnish such responses are identified with the aid of a perturbation analysis.  相似文献

The Green’s functions for the indentation of an elastic layer resting on or bonded to a rigid base by a line load are found efficiently and accurately by a combination of contour integration with a series expansion for small arguments. From the form of the equations it is clear that the function is oscillatory when the layer is free to slip over the base, but for the bonded layer, the function simply decays to zero after a single overshoot. The deformation due to pressure distributions of the form of the product of a polynomial with an elliptical (“Hertzian”) term is calculated and the coefficients chosen to match the indentation shape to that of a cylindrical indenter. The resulting pressure distributions behave much as in Johnson’s approximate theory, becoming parabolic instead of elliptical as the ratio b/d of contact width to layer thickness increases, or, for the bonded incompressible (ν = 1/2) layer, becoming bell-shaped for very large b/d.The relation between the approach δ and the contact width b curves has been investigated, and some anomalies in published asymptotic equations noted and, perhaps, resolved.A noticeable feature of our method is that, unlike previous solutions in which the full mixed boundary value problem (given indenter shape / stress-free boundary) has been solved, the bonded incompressible solid causes no problems and is handled just as for lower values of Poisson’s ratio.  相似文献

A solution is presented for the three dimensional static thermoelastic problem of an absolutely rigid inclusion (anticrack) in the case when a uniform heat flow is directed along the inclusion plane. By using the potential method and the Fourier transform technique, the problem is reduced to a system of coupled two-dimensional singular integral equations for the shear stress jumps across the inclusion. As an illustration, a typical application to the circular anticrack is presented. Explicit expressions for the thermal stresses in the inclusion plane are obtained and discussed from the point of view of material failure.  相似文献

The nonstationary problem on the axisymmetric antiplane deformation of a hollow cylinder due to a longitudinal impact on the end of the rigid cylindrical shell is considered. The solution of the boundary-value problem is reduced to a system of Volterra integral equations of the second kind. A numerical analysis is carried out and its results are plotted. S. P. Small mass impacts on composite structures are common cases caused by hailstones and runway debris. Small mass impactors usually result in a wave controlled local response, which is independent of boundary conditions. This response occurs before the reflection of waves from the boundaries and cannot be modeled by large mass drop weight tests. An elasto-plastic contact law, which accounts for permanent indentation and damage effects, was used here to study small mass impact on laminated composite plates. By comparing with results from the Hertzian contact law, it was found that damage can change the dynamic response of the structure significantly with increasing impact velocity. Due to smaller contact force generated for the case of using elasto-plastic contact, the central displacement of the plate is also less than the one using Hertzian contact law. The linearized version of the contact law was then used to derive the closed-form approximations of the contact force, indentation and plate central displacement for the impact loading of composite laminates. The threshold velocity for delamination onset under small mass impact was predicted analytically based on the obtained peak contact forces by combining with an existing quasi-static delamination threshold load criterion. A good agreement was found between the predicted threshold values and published experimental results.  相似文献

The impact of a rigid sphere on a homogeneous, isotropic elastic half-space in the absence of friction and adhesion is considered. The influence of the superseismic stage immediately following the moment of first contact upon the impact process is investigated in the frame of the Hertzian impact theory. The first order asymptotic approximation for the contact force in a three-dimensional dynamic contact problem with the slowly moving contact zone boundary is obtained and the corresponding asymptotic model of impact is developed. The motion of the indenter as it indents and rebounds from the elastic medium is analytically described. Explicit formulas are derived for the peak indentation depth, contact time, and rebound velocity as functions of the initial impact velocity, indenter mass, and characteristics of the elastic half-space.  相似文献
