Fe/Ce multilayers are magnetically soft with coercive fields of a few Oersteds. In this artificial system, the itinerant 5d electrons of Ce are magnetically polarized by hybridization with the spin–split 3d states of Fe. To obtain an insight into the magnetization reversal process, the element selectivity of X-ray magnetic circular dichroism was used to measure the magnetization of the Ce-5d electrons as a function of an applied magnetic field. Comparison with the magnetization curves studied by the magneto-optic Kerr effect, which averages over the whole system, revealed that the coercivity in the hysteresis of the ordered Ce-5d moments is reduced by 50%. We propose that this is an effect of the magnetically disturbed interface or of the complex non-collinear magnetic structure of the Ce layers detected by recent experiments of X-ray resonant magnetic scattering. The results are compared to the X-ray dichroic and Kerr hysteresis loops of the multilayers Fe/La/Ce/La and Fe/CeH2−δ. These systems are magnetically harder and their coercivities are identical.  相似文献

The use of X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) spectra for determininghe t magnitude of atomic magnetic moments in compounds of rare-earth and transition elements is discussed. The standard sum rule approach often yields a magnitude of moments that is often smaller than values obtained from magnetic measurements. We attribute this to strong spin fluctuations in the surface layers in which XMCD signals form. A way of determining the values of local magnetic moments in the presence of strong fluctuations is proposed and tested.  相似文献

Magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) in X-ray absorption has been measured at the L 2, 3 edges of Fe in ex-situ grown Fe and Fe 0.50 Co 0.48 V 0.02 films by means of the transmission method. A new approach is developed for fitting the observed transmittance, which describes the resonance lineshapes as (generalized) Fano profiles. Analytical integration of each single resonance allows a more reliable determination of the orbital and spin magnetic moments based on the MCD sum rules. The results are consistent with an increase of the Fe spin and orbital magnetic moment in Fe-Co alloys as obtained by other experiments and band structure calculations. We report and discuss experimental data on the thermoelectric power of magnetic multilayers. Measurements of the thermoelectric power of Fe/Cr, Co/Cu and Fe/Cu multilayers have been carried out in the temperature range 4K < T < 150 K magnetic fields perpendicular to the layers. All specimens were found to exhibit pronounced magnetothermoelectric power (MTEP) effects correlating with their giant negative magnetoresistance. The main difference between the MTEP and the magnetoresistance is in their temperature dependence. Whereas the magnetoresistance is a decreasing function of temperature, the MTEP, at least in Co/Cu and Fe/Cu multilayers, is very small at low temperature and increases rapidly above 30–40 K. We ascribe this high temperature part of the MTEP to spin-dependent electron-magnon scattering and we propose a theoretical model.  相似文献

The coupling of Cr to Fe in stacked Cr/Fe/Cr trilayers is studied by circular magnetic X-ray dichroism using fluorescence yield to monitor the absorption. From the dichroic spectra, we determine the thickness dependent average magnetic coupling of Cr to Fe for Cr layer thicknesses of 1, 2 and 3 ML. We compare our results to new calculated spectra. Additionally, all Cr spectra show significant contributions due to photon scattering processes at theL 2, 3 absorption edges depending on the degree of circular polarization.  相似文献

Near perpendicular magnetic hyperfine fields in 110mAg have been observed in Fe/Ag multilayers. These fields are studied by low temperature nuclear orientation (LTNO) in multilayers [Ag(x ML)/Fe(y ML)]20, with (x,y) monolayer (ML) values of (2,10), (3,9), (5,10) and (3,18). The 110mAg γ-ray anisotropy was measured as a function of applied magnetic field parallel to the multilayer. The average induced hyperfine field of Ag is significantly influenced by the quality of the multilayer as measured by X-ray diffraction. This revised version was published online in August 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

Soft X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) have been measured for the Ga0.97Cr0.03N film grown by NH3-assisted molecular beam epitaxy. Temperature dependence of the XMCD intensity was well described by the Curie–Weiss law. Although the sample showed ferromagnetic behavior at least up to room temperature, the ferromagnetic component could not be detected by the XMCD measurement.  相似文献

In this work we studied Ag surfactant induced growth of Cu/Co multilayers. The Cu/Co multilayers were deposited using Ag surfactant by the ion beam sputtering technique. It was found that Ag surfactant balances the asymmetry between the surface free energies of Cu and Co. As a result, the Co-on-Cu and Cu-on-Co interfaces become sharp and symmetric and thereby improve the thermal stability of the multilayer. On the basis of obtained results, a mechanism leading to symmetric and stable interfaces in Cu/Co multilayers is discussed.  相似文献

Magnetic circular dichroism in resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (MCD-RIXS) of ferromagnetic systems is discussed for the longitudinal geometry (LG), where the directions of incident X-ray and magnetization are parallel, and the transverse geometry (TG), where they are perpendicular. MCD-RIXS in LG is represented by two successive real processes, X-ray absorption and X-ray emission, while MCD-RIXS in TG is given by the interference process. We describe an application of MCD-RIXS in LG to the detection of Ce 4f2 contribution in Ce, L3 absorption edge of CeFe2, and theoretical and experimental studies of MCD-RIXS in TG for Gd and Sm systems.  相似文献
