Experimental results and theoretical prediction of the response of glassfiber-reinforced polyester under quasi-static, static (creep), and cyclic (fatigue) loading are presented. The nonlinear strain component at static loading and the strain amplitude rate at cyclic off-axis loading of an orthotropic composite are shown to follow the associated flow rule with a single-parameter quadratic potential function. Conclusions 1. The lifetime of a composite material having a dispersed filler has been examined under conditions of low-cycle compression.2. It has been shown that, in distinction from materials of fibrous structure, the lifetime of this material is determined, not by a breakdown in the continuity of structure, but the deformability of the polymer matrix.3. The absence of a correlation between the static and fatigue strengths of composite mateials from cold and hot curing is caused by the different effect of the structure of the cured binder as a component of the material on the ultimate static characteristics and creep, whose relaxation character is more clearly expressed.4. The conventional estimation of the fatigue strength of glass-fiber-reinforced plastics from the static strength in tension is shown to be inefficient by analysis of experimental data. It was found that a more reliable correlation is observed between their static and fatigue strengths as a result of referring –1 to *, where * is the smaller of the stresses in tension or compression, determined from the inflection points on the static deformation curves. A comparison of the temperature-time dependences of the strength of highly oriented fibers under static and cyclic loading shows that in the region of high temperatures and low loading frequencies the static and cyclic specimen lives always coincide. The discrepancy between the static and cyclic lives observed in the region of low temperatures and higher loading frequencies is related with differences in the structural changes in the different loading regimes. The relation between the high-elastic component of polyurethane deformation and the deformation of the surface layers of metals has been investigated for sliding friction in various media. The effect of one-sided rapid cyclic heating on the deformation of rigidly clamped specimens of acrylic plastics has been investigated. It is shown that as the temperature drop increases, so does the bending deformation (concave toward the heated surface) of the unclamped specimens; the greatest temperature change during thermal cycling is concentrated in an active surface layer not more than 1.6 mm thick and is accompanied by the development of tensile stresses in that layer. This paper discusses the variation in the deformation and strength properties of compact bone tissue during torsion in various zones of the cross section of human tibia. A correlation has been found between the specific energy of deformation consumed during the loading process and the level of stress attained. The possibilities and conditions of correlation are determined for the principal rheological characteristics of single-phase polymer systems measured for one-dimensional shear deformation in steady-state flow regimes, on transition from rest to steady-state flow, and in harmonic vibration regimes. Special significance attaches to the quantitative results of measuring the high-elastic properties of the polymer systems. Conclusions 1. The creep of thermoplastics in physiological salt solution is characterized by change in the rate of creep deformation relative to the creep in air. The bending creep deformations of HMWPE and phenylone and the compressive creep deformation of HMWPE are described by a binomial equation [Eq. (5)] and the compressive creep deformation of phenylone is described by Eq. (6).2. The lifetime of the thermoplastics studied under static compression and bending determined relative to limiting deformations is described by Eq. (7). Under the same stresses and limiting deformations, the lifetime of phenylone in physiological salt solution is greater than the lifetime of HMWPE.3. Studies were conducted to nondestructively evaluate the damage to a glass-fiber-reinforced plastic during cyclic and static loading. The evaluation was made by an ultrasonic method employing a laser. In both the unloaded and loaded specimens, the ultrasound attenuation spectrum has a resonance peak attributable to the periodic nature of the structure of the composite. This peak is shifted to the low-frequency region during static loading, due to a decrease in the elastic modulus. The spectra obtained after cyclic loading have no resonance peaks, due to attenuation of the ultrasound over a broad range of frequencies by a large number of fatigue cracks. The authors studied changes in the properties of resins in the static deformed state under the effect of gaseous oxygen pressures of up to 200 atm at 25, 50, and 70° C for 20–500 days, depending on the experimental conditions. It was shown that an increase in gaseous oxygen pressure significantly affects the process of accumulation of residual deformation up to 30–40 atm while a further pressure rise has practically no effect on changes in the accumulation rate of residual deformation.Scientific-Research Institute of the Resin Industry, Moscow. A model of the deformation and failure of unidirectionally reinforced plastics in short-time static tension with allowance for the effect of the properties of the components, the adhesion interaction between them, and the structure of the material is proposed as a basis for the selection and development of nondestructive methods of testing glass-reinforced plastic articles. A comparison of the static and cyclic lives of various polymers shows that, whatever the loading regime, fracture may be regarded from the standpoint of the thermal-fluctuation theory. Under comparable test conditions the lifetimes in different loading regimes coincide. The experimentally observed cases of a reduced cyclic as compared with static life do not conflict with the kinetic theory of fracture and can be attributed to hysteresis heating effects or to differences in the structural changes that take place in the test material in different loading regimes.From the standpoint of the kinetic theory, fracture is regarded as a certain process that develops in a body under load and not as a critical event that occurs when a critical stress — ultimate strength — is reached.A. Strip-beams of molded fabric-reinforced plastic, unidirectional wound glass-reinforced plastic, and polystyrene and syntactic foam have been tested in pulse bending in a modified electrodynamic testing device. The main stages of the failure process and the nature of the relation between the peak load and the number of cycles to failure have been established. For all the materials tested these relations are similar to the cyclic strength curves obtained at low loading rates. A model is proposed which explains the lowering of the lifetime of polymers on transition from static to cyclic loading by the interaction of local stresses from an external load with residual stresses which arose after preceding loading cycles. We consider two typical flanges: for a powerplant casing and for the casing of suspensions with a sound-absorbing duct. We model the behavior of flanges under the action of cyclic external loads based on solution of the nonlinear axisymmetric problem of elasticity theory. In order to take into account fatigue fracture of the layers of the structure, we use maximum stress criteria, a tensor damage function, the rule of linear summation of damage, and reduction schemes for the deformation characteristics of the layers, describing different fracture mechanisms. We indicate the possible nature of the development of fracture zones in composite flanges. Two series of thermotropic liquid crystalline copolyesters were studied in static and dynamic tensile deformation. Static loading generally does not lead to any peculiar phenomena: the stress-strain diagrams are linear or convex, except one copolyester fibre, the stress-strain diagram of which is concave at high temperatures. On the contrary, in dynamic loading the elasticity modulus increased during deformation for all the samples investigated.
