A distributed feedback fiber laser made of highly Er-Yb codoped phosphate glass fiber has been demonstrated experimentally. Efficient pump absorption allows for multimode pumping into the cladding of the active fiber. Output powers up to 160 mW have been achieved. The 35 mm long fiber laser device emits with >50 dB side mode suppression ratio.  相似文献

We report the observation of multimode laser operation at wavelengths corresponding to whispering-gallery modes from a freestanding microring cavity based on rhodamine B dye-doped PMMA hollow optical fibre. Cylindrical microcavities with diameters 155, 340 and 615 μm were fabricated from a dye-doped hollow polymer optical fibre preform. An average mode spacing of 0.17 nm was observed for the 340 μm cavity. This shows that the laser mode intensity distribution is concentrated on the outer edge of the cavity.  相似文献

An improved transmission line model to study the thermal effects in semiconductor laser diodes is reported in this paper. The temperature effects in the laser characteristics are obtained by incorporating temperature dependent gain and carrier density equations for the laser cavity. These primary factors are introduced in the regular transmission line laser model to estimate the static and dynamic characteristics of an 1.3μm InGaAsP double heterostructure laser diode. The results show good agreement with the experimental observation and solution of rate equations referred in the literature. The key feature of this model is that it provides the laser spectra at various temperatures. Based on the model, time dependent evolution of optical spectrum, temperature dependent optical output and frequency chirp are evaluated. Further the distribution of photon and electron density within the cavity is also determined.  相似文献

A Raman fibre laser based on phase shifted DFB structures is modelled for the first time. Using parameters of realistic devices, the model predicts low-threshold and highly-efficient laser output. The change of position and width of the phase shift were found to have a substantial impact on laser performance.  相似文献

An analysis is given of the effect of carrier spectral width on bandwidth of optical fibre transmission lines and a simple generalized expression is deduced relating carrier bandspread and maximum permissible pulse rate. It is shown that for the case of a semiconductor laser carrier source the bandwidth of a multimode fibre can be made to approach that expected from single-mode and graded-index fibres.  相似文献

It is well known that sensitivities as good as 45 photons/bit can be achieved when direct detection systems use ideal optical preamplifiers. We study the degradation in this sensitivity due to the presence of PM-AM noise that is caused by the laser phase noise and fibre dispersion. The results form a basis for the optimum design of optically preamplified direct detection systems by selection of a suitable laser source and fibre.  相似文献

Spectral line narrowing (by a factor of 8) and stabilization of the emission wavelength (by a factor of 30) of multimode high-power laser diodes and arrays is demonstrated by use of volume Bragg gratings fabricated in high-stability inorganic photorefractive glasses. A new safety standard for light emitting diodes, laser diodes and fibre optical transmission systems is needed because of the difficulties in applying existing standards to these products. New proposals, generated by a BSI working group, include a new classification system which takes into account the inherent beam divergence of most of these products, and the need to classify at different locations within an extended optical system such as a fibre-optic link.  相似文献

A pre-coding-assisted power detection scheme for radio over fiber downlink is presented. This scheme can eliminate laser phase noise while avoiding high energy-consuming electrical carrier required in conventional power and/or envelope detection schemes. Theoretical analysis and experimental verification are performed.0.625 Gbaud pre-coded quadrature phase-shift keying or 16 quadrature amplitude modulation signals can both be recovered by power detection without electrical carrier assistance at the receiver after 75 km fiber transmission. Not only robust against the laser phase noise, an improvement of about 5 dB in receiver sensitivity can also be achieved, as compared with the conventional power detection scheme.  相似文献

The longitudinal linewidth and corresponding relative intensity noise (RIN) of 10- and 40-GHz mode-locked laser diodes are measured for the first time to our knowledge. It is shown that the cavity Q value is a dominant parameter of the linewidth. It is also shown that the linewidth of the individual modes is almost constant. This means that the phase noise of each mode is almost the same in the mode-locked condition. The RIN value is larger for modes that are distant from the center longitudinal mode. This mode dependence is a consequence of the mode partition noise.  相似文献

The amplitude noise spectrum of the total laser output of a nearly single-mode laser diode is enhanced at low frequencies due to the nonlinear interaction between the spontaneous photons and the coherent laser field. This enhancement strongly depends on the spontaneous emission rate, resulting in a dependence of the amplitude noise spectral shape on the spontaneous emission rate. A linearized analytical model which predicts that the amplitude noise spectral shape is independent of the spontaneous emission rate is inadequate. The experimental data are consistent with a numerical simulation of the full nonlinear model.  相似文献

Mode coupling coefficients and coupling lengths are determined for multimode fibres with general index distributions in the case where random bending is the main cause of mode coupling. It is shown that the product of the coupling length and the coupling-induced loss is determined only by the shape of the index distribution, and that the coupling length of the focusing fibre is about four times longer than that of the step-index fibre when the coupling-induced losses of both fibres are equal.  相似文献

Study and characterization of distant shipping component of ambient noise in shallow water aid in design of passive surveillance algorithms and effective signature analysis of marine vessels. This letter presents the work carried out on real ambient noise recording in very shallow water condition close to a commercial port with heavy shipping activity to study and characterize the distant shipping noise component for variations due to tide. Ambient noise recording was carried out by a bottom mounted sensor at 30 m depth at regular interval for a period of over one month and the spectrum in the band 10–1.6 kHz was characterized for its diurnal spectral variation. The study concluded that the distant shipping noise component due to heavy small vessel activity in the nearby port resulted in up to 35 dB variation in the shallow water ambient noise in coastal areas that may have serious implication on passive surveillance algorithms performance in the vicinity if adequately not addressed. This is the first such effort in ambient noise measurement and characterization in the extremely shallow water channel condition prevalent in the tropical waters off the west coast of India.  相似文献

Dynamics of a semiconductor laser subject to moderate optical feedback operating in the low-frequency fluctuation regime is numerically investigated.Multimode Lang-Kobayashi(LK)equations show that the low-frequency intensity dropout including the total intensity and sub-modes intensity is accompanied by sudden dropout simultaneously,which is in good agreement with experimental observation.The power fluctuation is quite annoying in practical applications,therefore it becomes important to study the mechanism of power fluctuation.It is also shown that many factors,such as spontaneous emission noise and feedback parameter,may influence power fluctuation larger than previously expected.  相似文献

Optical waveguide theory is an established part of optical physics. Yet only recently have fundamental phenomena such as spatial eigenmodes and principal modes been demonstrated experimentally. This work leverages recently developed techniques enabling detailed spatiotemporal characterisation of multimode fibre to provide new insights into the fundamentals of fibre propagation. This paper presents detailed analysis of all 420 of a fibre's principal modes and spatial eigenmodes and compares the similarity and differences between these two phenomena. It was found that even over very short lengths, the principal modes can not only significantly suppress modal dispersion but are also a more physically meaningful basis than spatial eigenmodes.

对1560 nm单频光纤激光光源通过一个光学模清洁器后的强度噪声进行了分析研究.实验观察到模清洁器虽然对于激光的高频强度噪声有明显的抑制作用,但强度噪声特性随频率呈一定周期变化,且在低频处模清洁器对强度噪声有放大作用.本文认为这是由于模清洁器具有类似于光纤延迟线的时延效应,将激光源的部分相位噪声转化为强度噪声.通过理论分析,由相位噪声转化的相对强度噪声幅度与激光相干时间、模清洁器的平均延时参数以及分析频率相关.分析结果与实验测量结果符合良好.此外,通过在光路中加入声光调制器进行反馈调制,激光的线宽从26 kHz压窄至16 kHz,模清洁器的锁定质量明显提高,经过模清洁器后的激光强度噪声有所减小,与理论相符.该结果进一步证实了由相位噪声转化而来的强度噪声与模清洁器的锁定质量无直接关系.通过该研究,完善了光学模清洁器对激光的噪声抑制模型.  相似文献
