We identify R7 as the pure imaginary part of octonions. Then the multiplication in octonions gives a natural almost complex structure for the unit sphere S6. It is known that a cone over a surface M in S6 is an associative submanifold of R7 if and only if M is almost complex in S6. In this paper, we show that the Gauss-Codazzi equation for almost complex curves in S6 are the equation for primitive maps associated to the 6-symmetric space G2/T2, and use this to explain some of the known results. Moreover, the equation for S1-symmetric almost complex curves in S6 is the periodic Toda lattice, and a discussion of periodic solutions is given.  相似文献

Let S be a foundation locally compact topological semigroup. Two new topologies τ c and τ w are introduced on M a (S)*. We introduce τ c and τ w almost periodic functionals in M a (S)*. We study these classes and compare them with each other and with the norm almost periodic and weakly almost periodic functionals. For fM a (S)*, it is proved that T f ∈ℬ(M a (S),M a (S)*) is strong almost periodic if and only if f is τ c -almost periodic. Indeed, we have obtained a generalization of a well known result of Crombez for locally compact group to a more general setting of foundation topological semigroups. Finally if P(S) (the set of all probability measures in M a (S)) has the semiright invariant isometry property, it is shown that the set of τ w -almost periodic functionals has a topological left invariant mean.  相似文献

Let M⊂ℝ n be a submanifold of a euclidean space. A vector d∈ℝ n is called a helix direction of M if the angle between d and any tangent space T p M is constant. Let ℋ(M) be the set of helix directions of M. If the set ℋ(M) contains r linearly independent vectors we say that M is a weak r-helix. We say that M is a strong r-helix if ℋ(M) is a r-dimensional linear subspace of ℝ n . For curves and hypersurfaces both definitions agree. The object of this article is to show that these definitions are not equivalent. Namely, we construct (non strong) weak 2-helix surfaces of ℝ4. We consider the following sparse representation problem: represent a given matrix X∈ℝ m×N as a multiplication X=AS of two matrices A∈ℝ m×n (mn<N) and S∈ℝ n×N , under requirements that all m×m submatrices of A are nonsingular, and S is sparse in sense that each column of S has at least nm+1 zero elements. It is known that under some mild additional assumptions, such representation is unique, up to scaling and permutation of the rows of S. We show that finding A (which is the most difficult part of such representation) can be reduced to a hyperplane clustering problem. We present a bilinear algorithm for such clustering, which is robust to outliers. A computer simulation example is presented showing the robustness of our algorithm.  相似文献

Let ℝ denote the set of real valued functions defined on the real line. A map D: ℝ → ℝ is said to be a difference operator if there are real numbers a i, b i (i = 1, …, n) such that ()(x) = ∑ i=1 n a i ƒ(x + b i) for every ƒ ∈ ℝand x ∈ ℝ. By a system of difference equations we mean a set of equations S = {D i ƒ = g i: iI}, where I is an arbitrary set of indices, D i is a difference operator and g i is a given function for every iI, and ƒ is the unknown function. One can prove that a system S is solvable if and only if every finite subsystem of S is solvable. However, if we look for solutions belonging to a given class of functions then the analogous statement is no longer true. For example, there exists a system S such that every finite subsystem of S has a solution which is a trigonometric polynomial, but S has no such solution; moreover, S has no measurable solutions. This phenomenon motivates the following definition. Let be a class of functions. The solvability cardinal sc( ) of is the smallest cardinal number κ such that whenever S is a system of difference equations and each subsystem of S of cardinality less than κ has a solution in , then S itself has a solution in . In this paper we determine the solvability cardinals of most function classes that occur in analysis. As it turns out, the behaviour of sc( ) is rather erratic. For example, sc(polynomials) = 3 but sc(trigonometric polynomials) = ω 1, sc({ƒ: ƒ is continuous}) = ω 1 but sc({f : f is Darboux}) = (2 ω )+, and sc(ℝ) = ω. We consistently determine the solvability cardinals of the classes of Borel, Lebesgue and Baire measurable functions, and give some partial answers for the Baire class 1 and Baire class α functions. Let R13 be the Lorentzian 3-space with inner product (, ). Let Q3 be the conformal compactification of R13, obtained by attaching a light-cone C∞ to R13 in infinity. Then Q3 has a standard conformal Lorentzian structure with the conformal transformation group O(3,2)/{±1}. In this paper, we study local conformal invariants of time-like surfaces in Q3 and dual theorem for Willmore surfaces in Q3. Let M (?) R13 be a time-like surface. Let n be the unit normal and H the mean curvature of the surface M. For any p ∈ M we define S12(p) = {X ∈ R13 (X - c(P),X - c(p)) = 1/H(p)2} with c(p) = P 1/H(p)n(P) ∈ R13. Then S12 (p) is a one-sheet-hyperboloid in R3, which has the same tangent plane and mean curvature as M at the point p. We show that the family {S12(p),p ∈ M} of hyperboloid in R13 defines in general two different enveloping surfaces, one is M itself, another is denoted by M (may be degenerate), and called the associated surface of M. We show that (i) if M is a time-like Willmore surface in Q3 with non-degenerate associated surface M, then M is also a time-like Willmore surface in Q3 satisfying M = M; (ii) if M is a single point, then M is conformally equivalent to a minimal surface in R13.  相似文献

This paper presents a new numerical method for computing global stable manifolds and global stable sets of nonlinear discrete dynamical systems. For a given map f:ℝ d →ℝ d , the proposed method is capable of yielding large parts of stable manifolds and sets within a certain compact region M⊂ℝ d . The algorithm divides the region M in sets and uses an adaptive subdivision technique to approximate an outer covering of the manifolds. In contrast to similar approaches, the method requires neither the system’s inverse nor its Jacobian. Hence, it can also be applied to noninvertible and piecewise-smooth maps. The successful application of the method is illustrated by computation of one- and two-dimensional stable manifolds and global stable sets.  相似文献

We study the natural almost CR structure on the total space of a subbundle of hyperquadrics of the tangent bundle T(M) over a semi-Riemannian manifold (M, g) and show that if the Reeb vector ξ of an almost contact Riemannian manifold is a CR map then the natural almost CR structure on M is strictly pseudoconvex and a posteriori ξ is pseudohermitian. If in addition ξ is geodesic then it is a harmonic vector field. As an other application, we study pseudoharmonic vector fields on a compact strictly pseudoconvex CR manifold M, i.e. unit (with respect to the Webster metric associated with a fixed contact form on M) vector fields X ε H(M) whose horizontal lift X↑ to the canonical circle bundle S1 → C(M) → M is a critical point of the Dirichlet energy functional associated to the Fefferman metric (a Lorentz metric on C(M)).  This paper deals with the so-called Salzmann program aiming to classify special geometries according to their automorphism groups. Here, topological connected compact projective planes are considered. If finite-dimensional, such planes are of dimension 2, 4, 8, or 16. The classical example of a 16-dimensional, compact projective plane is the projective plane over the octonions with 78-dimensional automorphism group E6(−26). A 16-dimensional, compact projective plane ? admitting an automorphism group of dimension 41 or more is clasical, [23] 87.5 and 87.7. For the special case of a semisimple group Δ acting on ? the same result can be obtained if dim , see [22]. Our aim is to lower this bound. We show: if Δ is semisimple and dim , then ? is either classical or a Moufang-Hughes plane or Δ is isomorphic to Spin9 (ℝ, r), r∈{0, 1}. The proof consists of two parts. In [16] it has been shown that Δ is in fact almost simple or isomorphic to SL3?ċSpin3ℝ. In the underlying paper we can therefore restrict our considerations to the case that Δ is almost simple, and the corresponding planes are classified. In this work we generalize the case of scalar curvature zero the results of Simmons (Ann. Math. 88 (1968), 62–105) for minimal cones in Rn+1. If Mn−1 is a compact hypersurface of the sphere Sn(1) we represent by C(M)ε the truncated cone based on M with center at the origin. It is easy to see that M has zero scalar curvature if and only if the cone base on M also has zero scalar curvature. Hounie and Leite (J. Differential Geom. 41 (1995), 247–258) recently gave the conditions for the ellipticity of the partial differential equation of the scalar curvature. To show that, we have to assume n ⩾ 4 and the three-curvature of M to be different from zero. For such cones, we prove that, for nslant 7 there is an ε for which the truncate cone C(M)ε is not stable. We also show that for n ⩾ 8 there exist compact, orientable hypersurfaces Mn−1 of the sphere with zero scalar curvature and S3 different from zero, for which all truncated cones based on M are stable. We show that if a closed manifold M admits an ℱ-structure (not necessarily polarized, possibly of rank zero) then its minimal entropy vanishes. In particular, this is the case if M admits a non-trivial S 1-action. As a corollary we obtain that the simplicial volume of a manifold admitting an ℱ-structure is zero.?We also show that if M admits an ℱ-structure then it collapses with curvature bounded from below. This in turn implies that M collapses with bounded scalar curvature or, equivalently, its Yamabe invariant is non-negative.?We show that ℱ-structures of rank zero appear rather frequently: every compact complex elliptic surface admits one as well as any simply connected closed 5-manifold.?We use these results to study the minimal entropy problem. We show the following two theorems: suppose that M is a closed manifold obtained by taking connected sums of copies of S 4, ℂP 2, 2,S 2×S 2and the K3 surface. Then M has zero minimal entropy. Moreover, M admits a smooth Riemannian metric with zero topological entropy if and only if M is diffeomorphic to S 4,ℂP 2,S 2×S 2,ℂP 2#  2 or ℂP 2# ℂP 2. Finally, suppose that M is a closed simply connected 5-manifold. Then M has zero minimal entropy. Moreover, M admits a smooth Riemannian metric with zero topological entropy if and only if M is diffeomorphic to S 5,S 3×S 2, then on trivial S 3-bundle over S 2 or the Wu-manifold SU(3)/SO(3). A linear Weingarten surface in Euclidean space ℝ3 is a surface whose mean curvature H and Gaussian curvature K satisfy a relation of the form aH + bK = c, where a, b, c ∈ ℝ. Such a surface is said to be hyperbolic when a 2 + 4bc < 0. In this paper we study rotational linear Weingarten surfaces of hyperbolic type giving a classification under suitable hypothesis. As a consequence, we obtain a family of complete hyperbolic linear Weingarten surfaces in ℝ3 that consists of surfaces with self-intersections whose generating curves are periodic. We introduce a geometric invariant, called finite decomposition complexity (FDC), to study topological rigidity of manifolds. We prove for instance that if the fundamental group of a compact aspherical manifold M has FDC, and if N is homotopy equivalent to M, then M×ℝ n is homeomorphic to N×ℝ n , for n large enough. This statement is known as the stable Borel conjecture. On the other hand, we show that the class of FDC groups includes all countable subgroups of GL(n,K), for any field K.  相似文献
