A model for the near surface director profile in a homeotropically aligned smectic liquid crystal is developed based on the idea of the two independent anchoring energies separately associated with the director and the density wave at the surface. These anchoring energies are counterbalanced by the tendency to form the smectic C phase in the bulk. The model yields simple distance-dependent cone angle profiles which are compared with experimental data obtained from the half-leaky waveguide technique to obtain the coherence length for the penetration of the smectic C phase into the smectic A phase and the ratio of the surface to bulk cone angles.  相似文献

The optical tensor configuration in a homeotropically aligned ferroelectric liquid crystal (FLC), SCE13 cell, is investigated by means of optical excitation of half leaky guided modes. A thin slab of FLC is confined between a high index pyramid and a low index substrate whose indices bound those of the liquid crystal. In this geometry there exists a small angle range over which a series of sharp resonant modes may propagate in the liquid crystal. Detecting the angular dependent reflectivity for plane polarized radiation and subsequently fitting the data by iteratively modelling from multilayer Fresnel theory, a full characterization of the tilt and twist profile throughout the cell is achieved. The temperature dependence of the tilt of the principal director, which is related to the smectic cone angle, and of the optical permittivity, as well as the pitch have been obtained. The tilt director profile across the cell is interpreted using a compressible continuum theory for SmC* liquid crystals which includes the possibility of variable cone angle and layer spacing.  相似文献

A novel optical guided mode technique, the fully-leaky guided mode technique, has been used to investigate the director distortion under the application of an in-plane electric field of a homogeneously aligned conventional cell filled with the nematic liquid crystal E7. The liquid crystal is aligned using polyimide rubbed along the direction of the gold electrode edges. A weak field is applied across a 3 mm gap between the gold electrodes to induce small changes in the twist angle of the director. These distortions are determined by fitting to the angledependent reflectivity and transmissivity data and are compared with continuum theory. From careful analysis of the results, both the twist elastic constant, k22, and the azimuthal anchoring strength, Wa, of the system are obtained. At 23.5 C for E7 on rubbed polyimide we find that k22=(6.50 +/- 0.05)x10-12N and Wa=(2.9 +/- 0.2)x10-5 J m-2.  相似文献

The excitation of optical modes is used to study the optical tensor configuration in a thin ferroelectric liquid crystal layer, cooled from the initially homeotropically aligned nematic phase. By monitoring the angular dependent reflectivity for plane polarized radiation coupled into the guided modes in the smectic C* layer and subsequently fitting the recorded data to predictions from multilayer optics theory, the optical tensor configuration in the layer is fully evaluated. Iteratively modelling the full tilt/twist profile in the cell, progressively converging the predicted reflectivity to experimental data, gives a complete and very well specified picture of the optical tensor throughout the cell. By studying the cell at various temperatures, the temperature dependence of the tilt of the major axis of the optic tensor (which may be related to the cone angle if the smectic layers are parallel to the cell surface) has been established. The excitation of half leaky guided optical modes to characterize fully the optical tensor profile in a thin liquid crystal layer has been used to evaluate the effect of rubbed polyimide aligning layers on the alignment of a nematic liquid crystal. A cell fabricated with rubbed polyimide alignment surfaces was studied at a wavelength of 632.8 nm. The liquid crystalline layer is sandwiched between a high refractive index top glass plate and a low refractive index glass substrate. Angular dependent reflectivities are recorded using a coupling prism and matching fluid with the same index as the top glass plate. Careful fitting of the predictions from multilayer optics theory to the observed angle dependent polarization conversion and reflectivity data yields the director profile within the liquid crystal layer in great detail.  相似文献

The optic tensor configuration in a surface stabilized ferroelectric liquid crystal cell is investigated using optical excitation of half leaky guided modes. A thin ferroelectric liquid crystal layer is confined between a high index pyramid, with an index greater than the maximum of the liquid crystal, and a glass substrate having an index less than the minimum of the liquid crystal. Using standard attenuated total reflection experimental procedures, over a small angle range a series of sharp resonant peaks are recorded in the s-polarized reflectivity using p-polarized incident light. These peaks are extraordinarily sensitive to details of the optical tensor configuration within the cell. Fitting theoretically modelled reflectivities from multilayer Fresnel theory to the data allows determination of near surface alignment, bending of the chevron, surface tilt angle and biaxiality. To give a clear physical explanation for the great sensitivity of the technique, the electromagnetic field component distributions in the cell are also presented and analysed. The results confirm that the half leaky guided mode method has enormous potential for the study of the optic tensor configuration in liquid crystal layers.  相似文献

Recent papers on chevron surface stabilized ferroelectric liquid crystal cells claim that the chevron layer structure can be reversibly uprighted by application of the low to moderate electric fields typically employed to produce director reorientation. In this paper we show, using optical microscopy and X-ray scattering, that there is no significant change in the smectic layer thickness or chevron layer structure of our chevron surface stabilized ferroelectric liquid crystal cells under typical director switching conditions. Furthermore, we present arguments, based on the known elastic properties of smectics, that there is not likely to be a significant elastic layer response to these levels of applied electric field in any surface stabilized ferroelectric liquid crystal cell with anchored layers. Both the switching and observed continuous optical response to applied field can be understood on the basis of electric field induced reorientation of a non-uniform molecular director distribution. We further show that the typically observed broad distribution of layer orientations about the mean chevron structure arises from localized layering defects.  相似文献

Using prism coupling to guided modes and surface plasmons we have examined in detail the director response of a 90° twisted nematic liquid crystal cell as a function of applied voltage. By careful comparison of angle scan reflectivity data with theoretical predictions generated from a combination of liquid crystal continuum theory and multilayer optics theory it has been possible to establish how the surface tilt changes with voltage, and also to observe changes in the optic constants due to changes in the order parameter with applied field.  相似文献

Here the method of propagation of optic modes to examine the alignment in a ferroelectric liquid crystal layer is fully discussed. A sample geometry which allows the excitation of optic modes in a ferroelectric liquid crystal cell is presented and the data obtained in terms of reflectivity. The data are analysed by modelling the expected reflectivity from such a cell for a selection of proposed models for the optic tensor configuration. Models where the smectic layering lies perpendicular to the cell surfaces, or bends slowly across a cell are seen to be incorrect. It is found that a discontinuity in the smectic layering in the middle of the cell must be included to model the data well. This is consistent with the chevron structure seen in X-ray scattering work, and leads to an optic tensor alignment which is largely uniform across the ferroelectric layer. The relation between this and observation of conventional ferroelectric cells is discussed.  相似文献

The layer is held at a temperature just above the nematic to isotropic phase transition. Transverse magnetic (p) polarized light incident on the cell is coupled to guided modes in the liquid crystal layer using prism coupling. The modes manifest themselves as sharp dips in the reflectivity as the angle of incidence is scanned. When a low frequency sinusoidal voltage is applied to the cell, the resonant mode shapes and excitation angles are altered at a frequency which is twice that of the applied field, resulting in a modulation of the reflectivity for a given angle of incidence. By synchronous observation of the modulated signal, a differential signal is recorded. Comparing the data with modelling generated from multilayer optics theory, two effects are then quantified. The first of these is an induced birefringence, varying quadratically with applied voltage, which is well understood and can be expressed in terms of Landau-de Gennes theory. The second is a field induced perturbation in the imaginary part of the optical permittivity, δεi, which implies a modification of the light scattering properties of the liquid crystal. The measurement of the latter effect is, as far as we know, a novel one, being only made possible by the remarkable sensitivity of the synchronous differential technique.  相似文献

Liquid crystal layer characteristics have for some time been determined by analysis of the optical guided modes supported within such layers. A novel technique for guided mode analysis, relying on scattering and re-radiation of light from a liquid crystal filled Fabry-Perot, is presented here and compared with a more standard technique, where the transmissivity of light through such a structure, as a function of the angle of incidence, is measured. The new technique which we label 'momentum space imaging' is found to hold some advantages over traditional methods, with data acquisition on the millisecond time-scale and full liquid crystal layer characterization being achievable with minor modification to existing theoretical multilayer modelling.  相似文献

Liquid crystal elastomers can be macroscopically ordered with respect to the director by applying a mechanical field similar to electric/magnetic field effects of low molar mass liquid crystals. Introducing network anisotropy a priori by the synthesis, uniformly aligned nematic or smectic elastomers are available without external mechanical field. These LSCE's combine optical properties of single crystals with entropy elasticity of elastomers. Due to uniform director orientation without defects, the LSCE's exhibit excellent transparency which makes them applicable for optical elements. Non-linear optical properties can be easily optimized by attaching suitable I.c.-moieties to the polymer network. On the other hand, due to the rubber elasticity of the LSCE's, electromechanical effects can be observed, e. g. piezoelectricity of chiral smectic C-LSCE's.  相似文献

Liquid crystal alignment is studied using propagating optical mode techniques for a cell with a high surface tilt SiO alignment. The director configuration is determined for both the nematic and smectic A phases. In the nematic phase a uniform splay across the cell is demonstrated, as predicted by continuum theory. In the smectic A phase the structure is seen to be nearly uniform in the central region of the cell with large splay in boundary layers of about 0.5 μm thickness. The reason for this appears to be competition between the tilted surface alignment forces and internal forces within the bulk of the smectic A layer which would induce a homogeneous configuration.  相似文献

A new implementation of the technique for the measurement of the Goldstone mode rotational viscosity in the Sc phase is presented. An electric field is applied parallel to the surface of a free-standing liquid crystal film. The optical transmission change of the film is recorded. The viscosity can be calculated from the reorientation time between optically separated positions of the director. A comparison with the viscosity values measured in thin cells is given. The values determined in cells are always higher than the results obtained from free-standing films. This indicates the great influence of the forces of interaction between the liquid crystal molecules and the surface layer in the cells.  相似文献
