In this paper, we present families of quasi-convex sequences converging to zero in the circle group T, and the group J3 of 3-adic integers. These sequences are determined by increasing sequences of integers. For an increasing sequence , put gn=an+1−an. We prove that
(a)
the set {0}∪{±3−(an+1)|nN} is quasi-convex in T if and only if a0>0 and gn>1 for every nN;
(b)
the set {0}∪{±an3|nN} is quasi-convex in the group J3 of 3-adic integers if and only if gn>1 for every nN.
Moreover, we solve an open problem from [D. Dikranjan, L. de Leo, Countably infinite quasi-convex sets in some locally compact abelian groups, Topology Appl. 157 (8) (2010) 1347-1356] providing a complete characterization of the sequences such that {0}∪{±2−(an+1)|nN} is quasi-convex in T. Using this result, we also obtain a characterization of the sequences such that the set {0}∪{±2−(an+1)|nN} is quasi-convex in R.  相似文献

A group G?Sym(N) is cofinitary if g has finitely many fixed points for every gG except the identity element. In this paper, we discuss the definability of maximal cofinitary groups and some related structures. More precisely, we show the following two results:
(1)
Assuming V=L, there is a set of permutations on N which generates a maximal cofinitary group.
(2)
Assuming V=L, there is a mad permutation family in Sym(N).

Let R be a commutative local noetherian ring, and let L and L be R-modules. We investigate the properties of the functors and . For instance, we show the following:
(a)
if L and L are artinian, then is artinian, and is noetherian over the completion ;
(b)
if L is artinian and L is Matlis reflexive, then , , and are Matlis reflexive.
Also, we study the vanishing behavior of these functors, and we include computations demonstrating the sharpness of our results.  相似文献

We present a new construction of non-classical unitals from a classical unital U in . The resulting non-classical unitals are B-M unitals. The idea is to find a non-standard model Π of with the following three properties:
(i)
points of Π are those of ;
(ii)
lines of Π are certain lines and conics of ;
(iii)
the points in U form a non-classical B-M unital in Π.
Our construction also works for the B-T unital, provided that conics are replaced by certain algebraic curves of higher degree.  相似文献

By some extremely simple arguments, we point out the following:
(i)
If n is the least positive kth power non-residue modulo a positive integer m, then the greatest number of consecutive kth power residues mod m is smaller than m/n.
(ii)
Let OK be the ring of algebraic integers in a quadratic field with d∈{−1,−2,−3,−7,−11}. Then, for any irreducible πOK and positive integer k not relatively prime to , there exists a kth power non-residue ωOK modulo π such that .

This note is part of the implementation of a programme in foundations of mathematics to find exact threshold versions of all mathematical unprovability results known so far, a programme initiated by Weiermann. Here we find the exact versions of unprovability of the finite graph minor theorem with growth rate condition restricted to planar graphs, connected planar graphs and graphs embeddable into a given surface, assuming an unproved conjecture (*): ‘there is a number a>0 such that for all k≥3, and all n≥1, the proportion of connected graphs among unlabelled planar graphs of size n omitting the k-element circle as minor is greater than a’. Let γ be the unlabelled planar growth constant (27.2269≤γ<30.061). Let P(c) be the following first-order arithmetical statement with real parameter c: “for every K there is N such that whenever G1,G2,…,GN are unlabelled planar graphs with |Gi|<K+c⋅log2i then for some i<jN, Gi is isomorphic to a minor of Gj”. Then
1.
for every , P(c) is provable in IΔ0+exp;
2.
for every , P(c) is unprovable in .
We also give proofs of some upper and lower bounds for unprovability thresholds in the general case of the finite graph minor theorem.  相似文献

Suppose that is a collection of disjoint subcontinua of continuum X such that limi→∞dH(Yi,X)=0 where dH is the Hausdorff metric. Then the following are true:
(1)
X is non-Suslinean.
(2)
If each Yi is chainable and X is finitely cyclic, then X is indecomposable or the union of 2 indecomposable subcontinua.
(3)
If X is G-like, then X is indecomposable.
(4)
If all lie in the same ray and X is finitely cyclic, then X is indecomposable.

The level of a vertex in a rooted graph is one more than its distance from the root vertex. A generalized Bethe tree is a rooted tree in which vertices at the same level have the same degree. We characterize completely the eigenvalues of the Laplacian, signless Laplacian and adjacency matrices of a weighted rooted graph G obtained from a weighted generalized Bethe tree of k levels and weighted cliques in which
(1)
the edges connecting vertices at consecutive levels have the same weight,
(2)
each set of children, in one or more levels, defines a weighted clique, and
(3)
cliques at the same level are isomorphic.
These eigenvalues are the eigenvalues of symmetric tridiagonal matrices of order Moreover, we give results on the multiplicity of the eigenvalues, on the spectral radii and on the algebraic conectivity. Finally, we apply the results to the unweighted case and some particular graphs are studied.  相似文献

Let be a directed graph. A transitive fraternal augmentation of is a directed graph with the same vertex set, including all the arcs of and such that for any vertices x,y,z,
1.
if and then or (fraternity);
2.
if and then (transitivity).
In this paper, we explore some generalization of the transitive fraternal augmentations for directed graphs and its applications. In particular, we show that the 2-coloring number col2(G)≤O(1(G)0(G)2), where k(G) (k≥0) denotes the greatest reduced average density with depth k of a graph G; we give a constructive proof that k(G) bounds the distance (k+1)-coloring number colk+1(G) with a function f(k(G)). On the other hand, k(G)≤(col2k+1(G))2k+1. We also show that an inductive generalization of transitive fraternal augmentations can be used to study nonrepetitive colorings of graphs.  相似文献

Let H be a complex separable Hilbert space and L(H) denote the collection of bounded linear operators on H. An operator A in L(H) is said to be a Cowen-Douglas operator if there exist Ω, a connected open subset of complex plane C, and n, a positive integer, such that
(a)
(b)
  for z in Ω;
(c)
; and
(d)
for z in Ω.
In the paper, we give a similarity classification of Cowen-Douglas operators by using the ordered K-group of the commutant algebra as an invariant, and characterize the maximal ideals of the commutant algebras of Cowen-Douglas operators. The theorem greatly generalizes the main result in (Canada J. Math. 156(4) (2004) 742) by simply removing the restriction of strong irreducibility of the operators. The research is also partially inspired by the recent classification theory of simple AH algebras of Elliott-Gong in (Documenta Math. 7 (2002) 255; On the classification of simple inductive limit C*-algebras, II: The isomorphism theorem, preprint.) (also see (J. Funct. Anal. (1998) 1; Ann. Math. 144 (1996) 497; Amer. J. Math. (1996) 187)).  相似文献

Let G be a 2-dimensional connected, compact Abelian group and s be a positive integer. We prove that a classification of s-sheeted covering maps over G is reduced to a classification of s-index torsionfree supergroups of the Pontrjagin dual . Using group theoretic results from earlier paper we demonstrate its consequences. We also prove that for a connected compact group Y:
(1)
Every finite-sheeted covering map from a connected space over Y is equivalent to a covering homomorphism from a compact, connected group.
(2)
If two finite-sheeted covering homomorphisms over Y are equivalent, then they are equivalent as topological homomorphisms.

Let G be a universal Chevalley group over an algebraically closed field and U be the subalgebra of generated by all divided powers Xα,m with α<0. We conjecture an algorithm to determine if , where FU, ω is a dominant weight and is a highest weight vector of the Weyl module Δ(ω). This algorithm does not use bases of Δ(ω) and is similar to the algorithm for irreducible modules that involves stepwise raising the vector under investigation. For an arbitrary G, this conjecture is proved in one direction and for G of type A in both.  相似文献

For a Banach space B and for a class A of its bounded closed retracts, endowed with the Hausdorff metric, we prove that retractions on elements AA can be chosen to depend continuously on A, whenever nonconvexity of each AA is less than . The key geometric argument is that the set of all uniform retractions onto an α-paraconvex set (in the spirit of E. Michael) is -paraconvex subset in the space of continuous mappings of B into itself. For a Hilbert space H the estimate can be improved to and the constant can be replaced by the root of the equation α+α2+α3=1.  相似文献
