A new deterministic branch and bound algorithm is presented in this paper for the global optimization of continuous problems that involve concave univariate, bilinear and linear fractional terms. The proposed algorithm, the branch and contract algorithm, relies on the use of a bounds-contraction subproblem that aims at reducing the size of the search region by eliminating portions of the domain in which the objective function takes only values above a known upper bound. The solution of contraction subproblems at selected branch and bound nodes is performed within a finite contraction operation that helps reducing the total number of nodes in the branch and bound solution tree. The use of the proposed algorithm is illustrated with several numerical examples.  相似文献

This paper is concerned with the problem of unconstrained two-dimensional cutting of small rectangular pieces, each of which has its own profit and size, from a large rectangular plate so as to maximize the profit-sum of the pieces produced. Hifi and Zissimopoulos's recursive algorithm using G and Kang's upper bound is presently the most efficient exact algorithm for the problem. We propose a best-first branch and bound algorithm based upon the bottom-up approach that is more efficient than their recursive algorithm. The proposed algorithm uses efficient upper bound and branching strategies that can reduce the number of nodes that must be searched significantly. We demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed algorithm through computational experiments.  相似文献

We examine a branch and bound algorithm for solving nonlinear (convex) integer programming problems. In this note we generalize previous results for the quadratic case. In this paper, we introduce a new variant of the Vehicle Routing Problem (VRP), namely the Two-Stage Vehicle Routing Problem with Arc Time Windows (TS_VRP_ATWs) which generally emerges from both military and civilian transportation. The TS_VRP_ATW is defined as finding the vehicle routes in such a way that each arc of the routes is available only during a predefined time interval with the objective of overall cost minimization. We propose a Mixed Integer Programming (MIP) formulation and a heuristic approach based on Memetic Algorithm (MA) to solve the TS_VRP_ATW. The qualities of both solution approaches are measured by using the test problems in the literature. Experimental results show that the proposed MIP formulation provides the optimal solutions for the test problems with 25 and 50 nodes, and some test problems with 100 nodes. Results also show that the proposed MA is promising quality solutions in a short computation time.  相似文献

This paper presents an exact algorithm for a generalized version of the Travelling Salesman Problem which consists of finding the shortest Hamiltonian circuit through n clusters of nodes, in the case where the distance matrix is asymmetrical. The problem is formulated as an integer linear program. The program is then relaxed and solved by a branch and bound algorithm. computational results are reported for problems involving up to 100 nodes and 8 clusters.  相似文献

Cell formation (CF) is the first and the most important problem in designing cellular manufacturing systems. Due to its non-polynomial nature, various heuristic and metaheuristic algorithms have been proposed to solve CF problem. Despite the popularity of heuristic algorithms, few studies have attempted to develop exact algorithms, such as branch and bound (B&B) algorithms, for this problem. We develop three types of branch and bound algorithms to deal with the cell formation problem. The first algorithm uses a binary branching scheme based on the definitions provided for the decision variables. Unlike the first algorithm, which relies on the mathematical model, the second one is designed based on the structure of the cell formation problem. The last algorithm has a similar structure to the second one, except that it has the ability to eliminate duplicated nodes in branching trees. The proposed branch and bound algorithms and a hybrid genetic algorithm are compared through some numerical examples. The results demonstrate the effectiveness of the modified problem-oriented branch and bound algorithm in solving relatively large size cell formation problems.  相似文献

In this article we look at a new algorithm for solving convex mixed integer nonlinear programming problems. The algorithm uses an integrated approach, where a branch and bound strategy is mixed with solving nonlinear programming problems at each node of the tree. The nonlinear programming problems, at each node, are not solved to optimality, rather one iteration step is taken at each node and then branching is applied. A Sequential Cutting Plane (SCP) algorithm is used for solving the nonlinear programming problems by solving a sequence of linear programming problems. The proposed algorithm generates explicit lower bounds for the nodes in the branch and bound tree, which is a significant improvement over previous algorithms based on QP techniques. Initial numerical results indicate that the described algorithm is a competitive alternative to other existing algorithms for these types of problems.  相似文献

We consider an extension of the capacitated Vehicle Routing Problem (VRP), known as the Vehicle Routing Problem with Backhauls (VRPB), in which the set of customers is partitioned into two subsets: Linehaul and Backhaul customers. Each Linehaul customer requires the delivery of a given quantity of product from the depot, whereas a given quantity of product must be picked up from each Backhaul customer and transported to the depot. VRPB is known to be NP-hard in the strong sense, and many heuristic algorithms were proposed for the approximate solution of the problem with symmetric or Euclidean cost matrices. We present a cluster-first-route-second heuristic which uses a new clustering method and may also be used to solve problems with asymmetric cost matrix. The approach exploits the information of the normally infeasible VRPB solutions associated with a lower bound. The bound used is a Lagrangian relaxation previously proposed by the authors. The final set of feasible routes is built through a modified Traveling Salesman Problem (TSP) heuristic, and inter-route and intra-route arc exchanges. Extensive computational tests on symmetric and asymmetric instances from the literature show the effectiveness of the proposed approach.  相似文献

Less-Than-Truckload (LTL) carriers are required on a daily basis to solve Intra-Group Line-Haul (IGLH) problems. IGLH problems require the determination of routes to service required pickups and deliveries (i.e., 28-foot trailers) at End-Of-Line (EOL) terminals. The objective is to minimize total costs, given that tractors are able to simultaneously transport two trailers and that all pickups and deliveries must be accomplished. In this paper, an approximate IGLH solution approach is presented. Given pickup and delivery requirements together with relevant distance data, a matching network is constructed in which nodes correspond to sets of pickups and deliveries and links to routes. A minimum weight non-bipartite matching algorithm is solved over this network and the result is an IGLH solution. This solution is improved by again applying a minimum weight matching algorithm, this time to a matching network in which nodes correspond to routes and links to improved routes. Finally, the routes are sequenced so as to achieve balance at each EOL terminal (i.e., empty trailers must be delivered or picked up as necessary to ensure that each EOL terminal has the same number of pickups and deliveries) and to minimize the inventory of empty trailers. The new IGLH solution procedure is tested on randomly generated data and on data provided by a large LTL carrier. Computational tests show that near-optimal solutions are generated rapidly.  相似文献

This paper presents a new exact algorithm for the Capacitated Vehicle Routing Problem (CVRP) based on the set partitioning formulation with additional cuts that correspond to capacity and clique inequalities. The exact algorithm uses a bounding procedure that finds a near optimal dual solution of the LP-relaxation of the resulting mathematical formulation by combining three dual ascent heuristics. The first dual heuristic is based on the q-route relaxation of the set partitioning formulation of the CVRP. The second one combines Lagrangean relaxation, pricing and cut generation. The third attempts to close the duality gap left by the first two procedures using a classical pricing and cut generation technique. The final dual solution is used to generate a reduced problem containing only the routes whose reduced costs are smaller than the gap between an upper bound and the lower bound achieved. The resulting problem is solved by an integer programming solver. Computational results over the main instances from the literature show the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.   相似文献

The Vehicle Routing Problem with Time Windows consists of computing a minimum cost set of routes for a fleet of vehicles of limited capacity visiting a given set of customers with known demand, with the additional constraint that each customer must be visited in a specified time window. We consider the case in which time window constraints are relaxed into “soft” constraints, that is penalty terms are added to the solution cost whenever a vehicle serves a customer outside of his time window. We present a branch-and-price algorithm which is the first exact optimization algorithm for this problem.  相似文献

We present a parallel interior point algorithm to solve block structured linear programs. This algorithm can solve block diagonal linear programs with both side constraints (common rows) and side variables (common columns). The performance of the algorithm is investigated on uncapacitated, capacitated and stochastic facility location problems. The facility location problems are formulated as mixed integer linear programs. Each subproblem of the branch and bound phase of the MIP is solved using the parallel interior point method. We compare the total time taken by the parallel interior point method with the simplex method to solve the complete problems, as well as the various costs of reoptimisation of the non-root nodes of the branch and bound. Computational results on two parallel computers (Fujitsu AP1000 and IBM SP2) are also presented in this paper.  相似文献

This paper presents a new branching scheme for the asymmetric traveling salesman problem (ATSP) based on clusters. A cluster is defined as a node set with the characteristic that there exists an optimal solution in which the nodes in the node set are visited consecutively. The paper considers identification of clusters, implementation of a cluster based branching scheme, and cluster based dominance tests. The new approach is implemented in a branch and bound algorithm using a well-known additive bounding procedure. Considerable savings in computing time are obtained compared to previously published assignment based branch and bound algorithms for the ATSP.  相似文献

We present a branch and bound algorithm for a two-machine re-entrant flowshop scheduling problem with the objective of minimizing total tardiness. In the re-entrant flowshop considered here, all jobs must be processed twice on each machine, that is, each job should be processed on machine 1, machine 2 and then machine 1 and machine 2. By regarding a job as a pair of sub-jobs, each of which represents a pass through the two machines, we develop dominance properties, a lower bound and heuristic algorithms for the problem, and use these to develop a branch and bound algorithm. For evaluation of the performance of the algorithms, computational experiments are performed on randomly generated test problems and results are reported. Results of the experiments show that the suggested branch and bound algorithm can solve problems with up to 20 sub-jobs in a reasonable amount of CPU time, and the average percentage gap of the heuristic solutions is about 13%.  相似文献

Beam Search is a heuristic method for solving optimization problems. It is an adaptation of the branch and bound method in which only some nodes are evaluated in the search tree. At any level, only the promising nodes are kept for further branching and remaining nodes are pruned off permanently. In this paper, we develop a beam search based scheduling algorithm for the job shop problem. Both the makespan and mean tardiness are used as the performance measures. The proposed algorithm is also compared with other well known search methods and dispatching rules for a wide variety of problems. The results indicate that the beam search technique is a very competitive and promising tool which deserves further research in the scheduling literature.  相似文献

We present a metaheuristic methodology for the Capacitated Vehicle Routing Problem with two-dimensional loading constraints (2L-CVRP). 2L-CVRP is a generalisation of the Capacitated Vehicle Routing Problem, in which customer demand is formed by a set of two-dimensional, rectangular, weighted items. The purpose of this problem is to produce the minimum cost routes, starting and terminating at a central depot, to satisfy the customer demand. Furthermore, the transported items must be feasibly packed into the loading surfaces of the vehicles. We propose a metaheuristic algorithm which incorporates the rationale of Tabu Search and Guided Local Search. The loading aspects of the problem are tackled using a collection of packing heuristics. To accelerate the search process, we reduce the neighbourhoods explored, and employ a memory structure to record the loading feasibility information. Extensive experiments were conducted to calibrate the algorithmic parameters. The effectiveness of the proposed metaheuristic algorithm was tested on benchmark instances and led to several new best solutions.  相似文献

This paper presents an improvement to an existing branch and bound algorithm for solving the symmetric travelling salesman problem. The lower bound used is the standard one obtained from the sequence of minimal spanning 1-trees computed via subgradient optimization, but the branching rule is new. Rather than selecting for inclusion or exclusion those edges which violate the tour constraints in the final 1-tree of the sequence, we consider edges which are present in roughly half of the final few 1-trees. This results in a decision tree whose number of nodes grows by powers of two rather than three, hence significantly reducing the total number of decision nodes required to solve the problem.  相似文献

Column generation is involved in the current most efficient approaches to routing problems. Set partitioning formulations model routing problems by considering all possible routes and selecting a subset that visits all customers. These formulations often produce tight lower bounds and require column generation for their pricing step. The bounds in the resulting branch-and-price are tighter when elementary routes are considered, but this approach leads to a more difficult pricing problem. Balancing the pricing with route relaxations has become crucial for the efficiency of the branch-and-price for routing problems. Recently, the ng-routes relaxation was proposed as a compromise between elementary and non-elementary routes. The ng-routes are non-elementary routes with the restriction that when following a customer, the route is not allowed to visit another customer that was visited before if they belong to a dynamically computed set. The larger the size of these sets, the closer the ng-route is to an elementary route. This work presents an efficient pricing algorithm for ng-routes and extends this algorithm for elementary routes. Therefore, we address the Shortest Path Problem with Resource Constraint (SPPRC) and the Elementary Shortest Path Problem with Resource Constraint (ESPPRC). The proposed algorithm combines the Decremental State-Space Relaxation technique (DSSR) with completion bounds. We apply this algorithm for the Generalized Vehicle Routing Problem (GVRP) and for the Capacitated Vehicle Routing Problem (CVRP), demonstrating that it is able to price elementary routes for instances up to 200 customers, a result that doubles the size of the ESPPRC instances solved to date.  相似文献

This paper considers a scheduling problem with two identical parallel machines. One has unlimited capacity; the other can only run for a fixed time. A given set of jobs must be scheduled on the two machines with the goal of minimizing the sum of their completion times. The paper proposes an optimal branch and bound algorithm which employs three powerful elements, including an algorithm for computing the upper bound, a lower bound algorithm, and a fathoming condition. The branch and bound algorithm was tested on problems of various sizes and parameters. The results show that the algorithm is quite efficient to solve all the test problems. In particular, the total computation time for the hardest problem is less than 0.1 second for a set of 100 problem instances. An important finding of the tests is that the upper bound algorithm can actually find optimal solutions to a quite large number of problems.  相似文献
