The effects of the microencapsulated red phosphorus (MRP) content and specimen thickness on the mechanical properties of the filled polypropylene (PP) composites were studied at room temperature. The results showed that the influence of the MRP on the tensile and impact properties of the composites was significant, and the Young's modulus and impact strength of the composites increased nonlinearly while the tensile strength decreased slightly with increasing the MRP weight fraction; the tensile elongation at break increased outstandingly when the MRP weight fraction was less than 2% and then decreased with increasing the MRP weight fraction. Furthermore, the impact fracture surface was examined by scanning electronic microscope. The results suggested that the toughening effect was attributed to the absorption of impact fracture energy by the microencapsulated layer. Copyright © 2014 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

Thermoplastic composites reinforced with natural fibers have attracted the attention of many researchers, not only for environmental concerns, but also for economic reasons, recyclability, ease of processing, etc. One promising application is in the automotive industry due to their low cost and weight. This industry is increasingly pressured to produce vehicles that consume less fuel and are less polluting. Therefore, plastics reinforced with fibers are required to produce lighter parts to replace the much more abrasive glass fiber and mineral filled composites. One of the most widely used polymers in the automotive sector for manufacturing interior and exterior vehicle components is talc filled EPDM (ethylene-propylene-diene monomer) toughened polypropylene (PP). In this context, the aim of this study was to assess mechanical and thermal properties of bamboo fiber reinforced recycled talc filled PP/EPDM composites compatibilized with maleic anhydride grafted polypropylene (PP-g-MAH). Composites were prepared, according to a 22 factorial design with center point, in a Haake twin screw extruder with subsequent injection molding. Injected specimens were subjected to tensile, flexural, impact and fatigue testing. Morphological analyses were performed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and thermal analyses by thermogravimetry (TGA) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Addition of bamboo fiber significantly increased tensile and bending strength, modulus and fatigue life, and decreased elongation at break and impact strength. On the other hand, addition of the compatibilizer had a positive effect only on tensile and flexural strength, and fatigue life whereas the effect was negative on elongation at break and impact strength. The addition of fiber and compatibilizer did not appreciably affect the matrix melting temperature, but slightly increased crystallization temperature and in some cases the degree of crystallinity.  相似文献

In this study, polypropylene (PP)/thermoplastic polyurethanes (TPU) filled with inorganic intumescent flame retardant expanded graphite (EG) was prepared by melt blending in a twin-screw extruder. The thermal stability, fire retardancy, mechanical properties, and fracture morphology of PP/TPU composites with treated and untreated EG were investigated by thermogravimetric analysis, cone calorimeter, and scanning electron microscope. The results showed that both untreated and treated EG can greatly enhance the thermal stability and fire resistance of polymer matrix materials. Compared with untreated EG, treated EG can further improve the flame retardancy of the composites. For example, treated EG can further reduce the heat release rate, total heat release, and CO emissions of the composites in the combustion. Surface treatment of EG could significantly improve elongation at break and impact strength of PP/TPU/EG composites due to its enhanced interfacial adhesion and the good dispersion of EG particles in the polymer matrix.  相似文献

Mechanical and physical properties of polypropylene (PP)/polystyrene (PS) blend, PP/PS/polystyrene-block-poly(ethylene-ran-butylene)-block-polystyrene (SEBS) ternary blend and their composites with carbon nanofibers (CNF) were investigated. Composites of ternary blend exhibited superior properties compared to those of binary blends. Mechanical performance of nanocomposites was intimately related to their phase morphology. PP/PS/SEBS/0.1 wt% CNF hybrid composites exhibited excellent impact strength (Four-fold increase compared to PP/PS blend) and ductility (12-fold increase in elongation at break, with respect to PP/PS blend). Moreover, these composites displayed good tensile strength and modulus (15% increase in Young's modulus, compared to PP/PS/SEBS blend) and are suitable for various end-use applications including automobile applications. Although crystallinity of PP phase is decreased by the incorporation of CNF, thermal stability of the composites remained almost unaffected. Contact angle measurements revealed that ternary composites exhibited maximum hydrophobicity.  相似文献

An intumescent system consisting of ammonium polyphosphate (APP) as an acid source and blowing agent, pentaerythritol (PER) as a carbonific agent and natural zeolite (clinoptilolite, Gördes II) as a synergistic agent was used in this study to enhance flame retardancy of polypropylene (FR-PP). Zeolite was incorporated into flame retardant formulation at four different concentrations (1, 2, 5, and 10 wt%) to investigate synergism with the flame retardant materials. Filler content was fixed at 30 wt% of total amounts of flame retardant PP composites. Zeolite and APP were treated with two different coupling agents namely, 3-(trimethoxysilyl)-1-propanethiol and (3-aminopropyl)-triethoxysilane for investigation of the influence of surface treatments on mechanical properties and flame retardant performance of composites. Maleic anhydride grafted polypropylene (MAPP) was used for making polypropylene hydrophilic. Flammability of FR-PP composites was measured by the determination of limiting oxygen index (LOI). The LOI values reached to a maximum value of 41% for mercapto silane treated APP:PER (2:1) PP composite containing 5 wt% zeolite. The tensile strength of composites was increased by the addition of MAPP and elongation at break of composites was increased with silane treatments.  相似文献

Due to the economic importance of polypropylene (PP) and polyethylene terephthalate (PET), and the large amount of composites made with PP matrix and recycled PET as reinforcing material; an investigation was performed regarding the mechanical and thermal behavior of PP composites containing recycled polyethylene terephthalate fibers (rPET). Interfacial adhesion between the two materials was achieved by adding a compatibilizer, maleic anhydride grafted polypropylene, PP-g-MA. Mechanical behavior was assessed by tensile, flexural, impact and fatigue tests, and thermal behavior by HDT (Heat Deflection Temperature). Fractured surfaces and fiber were investigated by scanning electron microscopy. Multiple regression statistical analysis was performed to interpret interaction effects of the variables. Tensile strength, tensile modulus, flexural strength, flexural modulus and HDT increased after rPET fiber incorporation while strain at break, impact strength and fatigue life decreased. Addition of compatibilizer increased tensile strength, flexural strength and flexural modulus, fatigue life and HDT while tensile modulus, strain at break and impact strength decreased. However, at low fiber content, the impact strength increased, probably due to nucleation effects on PP.  相似文献

Samples of polyethylene (PE) and polypropylene (PP) with 2% Renatura™ pro-oxidant additive were subjected to varying times of weathering (UVCON; ISO 4892-3), transferred to dark thermal exposure (at 70 °C) and the subsequent degradation monitored by measuring elongation at break and tensile strength during intervals up to 45 days. The results demonstrate that the oxidative degradation, after initial light exposure, continues more rapidly in the dark thermal conditions and that increased exposure to light increases thermal oxidative degradation.  相似文献

In this paper, calcium carbonate was chemically treated with two kinds of dicarboxylic acids before compounding with polypropylene in the presence of dicumyl peroxide (DCP). It was observed that the mixture of dicarboxylic acids could improve the crystallization and impact strength properties of calcium carbonate/polypropylene composite. With further addition of DCP, more PP-g-MA was produced in the blend, resulting in PP composites with larger β-phase content and improved mechanical properties. In the experiments, the maximum K β value of 52.0 % was obtained. The elongation at break of composite increased from 252 % for PP composite with untreated calcium carbonate to 444 % for PP composite with chemically treated calcium carbonate.  相似文献

The reinforcing effects of highly effective flame retardant magnesium hydroxide (FMX) content on the tensile and flexural properties of filled polypropylene (PP) composites were investigated within the FMX weight fraction range from 5 to 60 wt%. It was found that the Young's modulus and flexural modulus increased approximately linearly while the tensile yield strength and tensile fracture strength decreased slightly with increasing the FMX weight fraction. When the FMX weight fraction was lower than 20%, the tensile elongation at break decreased considerably, and then decreased slightly; the flexural strength increased when the FMX weight fraction was lower than 30%, and then decreased slightly. The tensile properties increased with increasing rate of tension. Moreover, the tensile yield strength of the composites was estimated using an equation proposed in previous work, and good agreement was shown between the predicted and the measured data.  相似文献

Polyamide 6/polypropylene (PA6/PP = 70/30 parts) blends containing 4 phr (parts per hundred resin) of organically modified clay (organoclay) toughened with maleated styrene-ethylene-butylene-styrene (SEBS-g-MA) were prepared by melt compounding using co-rotating twin-screw extruder followed by injection molding. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscope (TEM) were used to characterize the structure of the nanocomposites. The mechanical properties of the nanocomposites were determined by tensile, flexural, and notched Izod impact tests. The single edge notch three point bending test was used to evaluate the fracture toughness of SEBS-g-MA toughened PA6/PP nanocomposites. Thermal properties were studied by using thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). XRD and TEM results indicated the formation of the exfoliated structure for the PA6/PP/organoclay nanocomposites with and without SEBS-g-MA. With the exception of stiffness and strength, the addition of SEBS-g-MA into the PA6/PP/organoclay nanocomposites increased ductility, impact strength and fracture toughness. The elongation at break and fracture toughness of PA6/PP blends and nanocomposites were increased with increasing the testing speed, whereas tensile strength was decreased. The increase in ductility and fracture toughness at high testing speed could be attributed to the thermal blunting mechanism in front of crack tip. DSC results revealed that the presence of SEBS-g-MA had negligible effect on the melting and crystallization behavior of the PA6/PP/organoclay nanocomposites. TGA results showed that the incorporation of SEBS-g-MA increased the thermal stability of the nanocomposite.  相似文献

Ammonium polyphosphate (APP)/polypropylene (PP) composites were prepared by melt blending and extrusion in a twin-screw extruder. APP was first modified by a silane coupling agent KH-550 then added to polypropylene. The surface modification of APP by the coupling agent decreased its water solubility and its interface compatibility with the PP matrix. Limiting oxygen index (LOI) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) were used to characterize the flame retardant property and the thermal stability of the composites. The addition of APP improved the flame retardancy of PP remarkably. The crystal structures of APP/PP composites were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD). The results indicated that β-crystal phase PP may be formed. The structures and morphologies of APP, KH-550/APP and APP/PP composites were characterized by field-emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM). The mechanical property tests showed good mechanical properties of composite materials. Compared with unmodified one, the impact strength, tensile strength and elongation of modified APP/PP were all improved.  相似文献

In this paper, combined moisture/ultraviolet (UV) weathering performance of unbleached and bleached Kraft wood fibre reinforced polypropylene (PP) composites was studied. Composites containing 40 wt% fibre with 3 wt% of a maleated polypropylene (MAPP) coupling agent were fabricated using extrusion followed by injection moulding. Composite mechanical properties were evaluated, before and after accelerated weathering for 1000 h, by tensile and impact testing. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were also carried out to assess the changes occurring during accelerated weathering. Bleached fibre composites initially showed higher tensile and impact strengths, as well as higher thermal stability and greater crystallinity. During accelerated weathering, both unbleached and bleached fibre composites reduced tensile strength (TS) and Young's modulus (YM), with the extent of the reduction found to be similar for both unbleached and bleached fibre composites. Evidence supported that the reduction of TS and YM was due to PP chain scission, degradation of lignin and reduced fibre-matrix interfacial bonding.  相似文献

The aim of this study is to investigate the reinforcing effect of Ceratonia siliqua (CS) powder as a novel natural filler for polypropylene (PP) based composites. CS powder up to 20 wt% was filled into PP matrix by using high speed thermo kinetic mixer. Mechanical and thermal properties of CS filled PP based composites were investigated by tensile and three point bending test, dynamic mechanical analysis, thermogravimetric analysis, differential scanning calorimetry analysis, fourier transform infrared analysis, and thermomechanical analysis. Morphology of the composites was also investigated by scanning electron microscopy. By filling 5% and 10% of CS into PP, tensile strength and flexural strength of PP increased by about 32 and 23%, respectively. This indicates that CS has a great potential to be used as reinforcing filler for PP composites. CS filling into PP led to lower coefficient of thermal expansion values which could help preventing the thermal expansion.  相似文献

The ferrocene‐based polymer (PDPFDE) accompanied with traditional intumescent flame retardant (IFR) system (ammonium polyphosphate (APP)/pentaerythritol (PER) = 3/1, mass ratio) has been used as additive flame retardant in polypropylene (PP), aiming to lower the total loading amount. The thermal stability and fire retardant properties were investigated by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), limiting oxygen index (LOI), vertical combustion (UL‐94), and cone calorimetry (CONE). The fire retardant mechanism was studied by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and Raman spectroscopy. The results showed that the PP1 with 25 wt% IFR only passed the UL‐94 V‐1 rating, but the PP6 loaded by 0.5 wt% PDPFDE and 22.5 wt% IFR possessed an LOI value of 28.5% and passed the UL‐94 V‐0 rating; the peak heat release rate (pHRR) and total heat release (THR) are decreased by 63% and 43%, respectively, compared with pure PP. In addition, the char residue of PP6 manifested a very compact and smooth surface, indicating a more effective barrier layer. Meanwhile, it was interesting that the addition of PDPFDE evidently improved the impact strength and elongation at break of PP/IFR composites.  相似文献

A novel UV-curable hyperbranched polyurethane acrylate (HUA) was synthesized and found to polymerize rapidly in the presence of 5 wt.% benzophenone in N2 under UV exposure. The photopolymerization kinetics of HUA was studied by differential photocalorimetry (DPC). Its toughening effect for polypropylene (PP) was investigated by tensile and impact tests of the UV irradiated PP/HUA blends. The morphological structures and thermal behavior were determined by polarized optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The obtained results demonstrate that (1) the maximum photopolymerization rate increases with raising temperature up to 140 °C, whereas decreases at above 150 °C. The activation energy of 19 kJ mol−1 for the photopolymerization was obtained at below 140 °C from the Arrhenius plot, while it is negative at above 150 °C. (2) The incorporation of 5 wt.% HUA greatly improved the notched impact strength of PP matrix with a slight improvement in the tensile strength and without obvious decline in breaking elongation. These results correlate well with SEM observation. (3) During the UV irradiation of PP/HUA blends, PP can be crosslinked/grafted with the cured HUA particles, resulting in the increase of the impact strength of PP matrix. (4) The cured HUA particles in the PP/HUA blends act as heterogeneous nucleation agent for PP, which results in the decrease of spherulite size and less perfection of PP crystals.  相似文献

Acrylonitrile‐butadiene rubber (NBR) composites filled with co‐precipitates of black liquor and montmorillonite (CLM) were prepared by mechanical mixing on a two‐roll mill. The cure characteristics, mechanical properties, thermal properties, and thermo‐oxidative aging properties of NBR/CLM composites were evaluated. Scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy showed that the filler particles were well dispersed in the NBR/CLM composites. The scorch time and optimum cure time increase with increasing filler loading. A remarkable enhancement in tensile strength, elongation at break, 300% modulus, and shore “A” hardness was also observed. When the loading of CLM was 40 parts per hundred rubbers, it showed about seven times increase in tensile strength, about 1.8 times increase in elongation at break, about three times increase in 300% modulus, and about 1.3 times increase in shore A hardness, respectively, as compared with those of pure cured NBR. Thermal properties and thermal oxidative aging properties, in general, were also improved with loading of this novel filler. Copyright © 2011 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

Kaolin-filled polypropylene (PP) composites generally form α-crystal due to the effect of kaolin with α-nucleation. The transition from α- to β-nucleation of kaolin has been investigated, and a novel kaolin with β-nucleation (β-kaolin) and kaolin-filled PP composites with high β-crystal content were prepared first. The DSC and WAXD results indicated that the β-kaolin exhibits stronger β-nucleating ability than CaPA as β-nucleating agent for PP crystallization. It is found that the β-crystal content has been influenced little by filler contents in β-kaolin-filled PP composites. Mechanical properties and spherulitic morphology of filled PP composites was characterized. The synergistic effect of filler and β-crystal significantly improved impact strength of kaolin-filled PP composites.

The thermal degradation and thermal stability of rice husk flour (RHF) filled polypropylene (PP) and high-density polyethylene (HDPE) composites in a nitrogen atmosphere were studied using thermogravimetric analysis. The thermal stability of pure PP and HDPE was found to be higher than that of wood flour (WF) and RHF. As the content of RHF increased, the thermal stability of the composites decreased and the ash content increased. The activation energy of the RHF filled PP composites increased slowly in the initial stage until α=0.3 (30% of thermal degradation region) and thereafter remained almost constant, whereas that of the RHF filled HDPE composites decreased at between 30 and 40 mass% of RHF content. The activation energy of the composites was found to depend on the dispersion and interfacial adhesion of RHF in the PP and HDPE matrix polymers. This revised version was published online in July 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献
