The combination of organophillised montmorillonite (MMT), synthetic hydromagnesite and aluminium hydroxide (ATH) as flame retardant system for polyethylene-based materials was studied and compared with a similar system with magnesium hydroxide, ATH and MMT. The thermal stability and the flame retardant properties were evaluated by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), differential thermal analysis (DTA), limiting oxygen index (LOI) and cone calorimeter tests. The results indicated that the addition of montmorillonite makes it possible to reduce the total filler content to achieve the flame retardant requirements. The thermal stability of filled LDPE/EVA blends increases to a higher extent for the samples containing MMT. In the cone calorimeter tests we observed a reduction of the peak heat release rate for the sample containing montmorillonite in comparison with a sample with higher filler loading without this nanoclay. An increase of the stability of the char formed could be responsible for this favourable behaviour when montmorillonite is added. In addition, mechanical properties significantly improved for the composites containing montmorillonite both for the filler loading reduction and the reinforcement effect of the nanoclay.  相似文献

In this work, Fe‐montmorillonite (Fe‐MMT) is synthesized and used as a synergistic agent in ethylene vinyl acetate/magnesium hydroxide (EVA/MH) flame retardant formulations. The synergistic effect of Fe‐MMT with magnesium hydroxide (MH) as the halogen‐free flame retardant for ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA) is studied by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), limiting the oxygen index (LOI), UL‐94, and cone calorimetry test. Compared with that of Na‐MMT, it indicates that the synergistic effects of Fe‐MMT enhance the LOI value of EVA/MH polymer and improve the thermal stability and reduce the heat release rate (HRR). The structure and morphology of nanocomposites are studied by X‐ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The mechanical properties of the EVA composites have also been studied here, indicating that the use of Fe‐MMT reduces the amount of inorganic fillers. MH hence enhances the mechanical properties of the EVA composite while keeping the UL‐94 V‐0 rating. Copyright © 2008 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

Synthetic hydromagnesite obtained from an industrial by-product was evaluated as a non-halogenated flame retardant. It was used in combination with aluminium hydroxide (ATH) and compared with commercial flame retardants like magnesium hydroxide (MH) and natural hydromagnesite-huntite (U) in a polyolefin system of low-density polyethylene/poly(ethylene-co-vinyl acetate) (LDPE/EVA).The thermal stability and flame behaviour of the halogen free flame retarded composites were studied by thermogravimetric and differential thermal analysis (TG-DTA), limiting oxygen index (LOI), epiradiateur and cone calorimeter. It has been shown that synthetic hydromagnesite could be an alternative solution to the use of MH in non-halogenated flame retardant systems in EVA.  相似文献

Silica particles of different physical properties (particle size, morphology and specific surface area) were introduced into an ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer filled with an intumescent mineral fire retardant system containing magnesium hydroxide and organo-modified montmorillonites. The effect of silica particles on the cohesion and strength of the foamed combustion residue was studied by micro-indentation, concurrently with the characterization of material's fire behavior.Silica particles seem to act as defects that generate cracks, decreasing the strength of the residue. This generation of cracks is connected to a lower cohesion of the residue, especially for silica particles of high specific surface area. In parallel, the presence of silica of high specific surface area, despite tending to decrease Time To Ignition, also improves self-extinguishing ability, thanks to a better thermal stability at higher temperatures, and reduces the maximum Heat Release Rate in cone calorimeter tests.  相似文献

Fire and thermal properties of ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA) composites prepared by melt blending with layered double hydroxides (LDH) have been studied. Two types of LDHs intercalated with borate anion were prepared using the coprecipitation method and the metals Mg2+, Zn2+ and Al3+. Characterization of the LDHs and the EVA composites was performed using X-ray diffraction, thermogravimetric analysis, and cone calorimetry. Thermal analyses show that the addition of LDHs improves the thermal stability of EVA. Fire properties evaluated using the cone calorimeter were significantly improved in the EVA/LDH composites. The peak heat release rate was reduced by about 40% when only 3% by weight of the LDH was added to the copolymer. Comparison of the fire properties of the LDHs with those of aluminum trihydrate (ATH), magnesium hydroxides (MDH), zinc hydroxide (ZH) and their combinations at 40% loading, reveal that the LDHs were more effective than when MDH and ZH are used alone.  相似文献

Functional polymers such as polyethylene grafted glycidyl methacrylate (PE-g-GMA) and ethylene-methyl acrylate-glycidyl methacrylate terpolymer (E/MA/GMA) were used as compatibilizers in the preparation of highly filled composites of polyethylene/magnesium hydroxide(PE/MH). Comparative studies were performed on the effect of magnesium hydroxide and stearic acid on the interface within polymer and magnesium hydroxide composites. The effect of polymeric compatibilizers on the properties of the composites was studied using tensile and impact tests, torque rheological analysis, differential scanning calorimetry and environmental scanning electron microscopy (ESEM). The microstructure of highly filled PE/MH composites changed after the addition of functional polymers. The mechanical properties of the composite material increased after compatibilization. The compatibilization processes of PE-g-GMA and E/MA/GMA were different. The grafted polymer was more compatible with polyethylene, which led to a polar polymer phase. In contrast, the tercopolymer tended to adhere to the surface of MH particles.  相似文献

UV curable epoxy acrylates were reinforced with two different organically modified montmorillonites (MMTs) and an unmodified MMT. Conversion and rate of polymerization was monitored by real time infrared spectroscopy (RTIR) and photo-DSC. Microstructures were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and optical clarity. Optical clarity of the films containing clay was quite good as only a slight decrease was observed. Physical properties of the reinforced films were examined by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), dynamic mechanical thermal analysis (DMTA), hardness and tensile testing. Enhancements in glass transition temperature (Tg), thermal stability and mechanical properties were observed. The films reinforced with the unmodified MMT exhibit the most significant enhancements in properties.  相似文献

The influence of matrix viscosity and polarity on ethylene‐vinyl acetate copolymer (EVA) nanocomposites was studied. Five different EVA grades, with different melt flow indexes (MFIs) and/or vinyl acetate (VA) contents, were mixed with two montmorillonite (MMT) nanoclays: pristine and modified with a polar surfactant, producing 75/25 w/w% masterbatches which were subsequently diluted in the EVA matrix to obtain 5 wt% MMT nanocomposites. Although the same VA content, WAXS results, rheological measurements and TEM analysis showed that the lower the EVA viscosity, the greater the tendency to obtain exfoliated and well dispersed nanocomposites with the organically modified clay. On the other hand, the high viscosity EVA nanocomposites showed that the (001) organoclay diffraction peak was shifted to higher values of 2θ, suggesting lamellae collapsing. TGA and FTIR measurements were used to probe the thermal degradation of organoclay; furthermore, it was not possible to identify, by the techniques used, any reaction between the VA groups and hydroxyl surfactant groups. Thus, it was inferred that the organic surfactant was removed (or ejected) from the clay galleries as a consequence of huge shear tensions developed during processing of the masterbatches/nanocomposites with high viscosity EVA matrices. Nanocarbon black (CB) was introduced into ethylene-vinyl acetate/brucite (EM) composites to investigate the synergistic effect of CB and metal hydroxide on improving the flame retardancy of EVA. Flammability properties of the as-prepared EVA composites were investigated by thermogravimetric analysis, limiting oxygen index (LOI), UL-94 test and cone calorimetry test. The results indicated that the optimum mass ratio of CB/brucite was 1/54, at which the EVA composites displayed dramatic improvement on thermal stability and flame retardancy. The LOI value was as high as 35.3%, the UL-94 passed the V-0 rating, and the peak heat release rate reduced 79% in comparison with pure EVA. Based on the morphology and structure analysis for residue chars, the flame-retardant mechanism was attributed mainly to the positive synergistic effect of CB and brucite on promoting the formation of better carbon protective layer during combustion.

High-density polyethylene/ethylene vinyl-acetate copolymer/magnesium hydroxide composites were crosslinked via high-energy electron beam irradiation in the presence of triallylisocyanurate. The structure of the cross-linking network was determined with the help of rheological measurements through advanced rheological extended systems (ARES). The thermal and flame-retardant properties of the irradiated composites were investigated by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and cone calorimetry. Results showed that the cross-linking network structure could enhance the thermal stability of composites, and did favor to smoke suppression. However, the peak heat release rate (PHRR) increased and the time to PHRR shortened, inferring that the composites after irradiation cross-linking were easier to combust. The char microstructure after cone calorimetry test was observed and used to give explanation of the above results.  相似文献

A long-chain surfactant, enzoylbenzyl-N,N-dimethyl-N-octadecylammonium bromide (BDOB) with a benzophenone group, was synthesized to modify the montmorillonites (MMT) for the preparation of nanocomposites via photo-induced polymerization. The BDOB-modified MMT was characterized by the fourier transform infrared spectrometer (FTIR), thermal gravimetric analyzer (TGA) and X-ray diffraction (XRD), and the results of XRD indicated that the intercalated structures of BDOB-modified MMT was obtained. The conversion of the bisphenol A epoxy diacrylate (EA) was quantified by the FTIR, and the results indicated that conversion increased with an increase in the amount of BDOB-modified MMT. The morphologies of the UV-cured EA/MMT nanocomposites prepared from this organically modified MMT were studied by means of XRD and TEM, and the results showed that all the samples contained an intercalated structure with partial exfoliated structure. The results of TGA and mechanical properties also indicated that the thermal and mechanical properties of UV-cured nanocomposites were significantly enhanced due to the presence of the long chain surfactant organically modified MMT.  相似文献

The synergistic effects and mechanism of multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) with magnesium hydroxide (MH) in halogen-free flame retardant EVA/MH/MWNT nanocomposites have been studied by cone calorimeter test (CCT), limiting oxygen index (LOI), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), torque test, morphological evolution experiment, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The data obtained from the CCT, LOI, and TGA show that suitable amount of MWNTs has synergistic effects with MH in the EVA/MH/MWNT nanocomposites. The MWNTs can considerably decrease the heat release rates and mass loss rate by about 50-60%, prolongate the combustion time to near two times, and increase the LOI values by 5% when 2 wt% MWNTs substitute for the MH in the EVA/MH/MWNT samples. The TGA data also show that the synergistic effects of MWNTs with MH apparently increase the thermal degradation temperatures and final charred residues of the EVA/MH/MWNT samples. The experimental observations from the torque, morphological evolution tests, and SEM give positive evidences that the synergistic mechanism of MWNTs with MH can be described to: (i) the increase of melt viscosity because of network structure formation of MWNTs in the EVA/MH matrix; (ii) the enhancement of thermo-oxidation stability due to the MWNTs' mechanical strength and integrity of the charred layers in the EVA/MH/MWNT nanocomposites; (iii) the formation of compact charred layers promoted by MWNTs acted as heat barrier and thermal insulation. All the above-mentioned factors efficiently enhance thermal and flame retardant properties and protect the EVA/MH/MWNT nanocomposite materials to be burning.  相似文献

A series of modified montmorillonites including Zn2+ loaded montmorillonite (Zn/MMT), Ce3+ loaded montmorillonite (Ce/MMT) and Zn2+‐Ce3+ loaded montmorillonites (Zn‐Ce/MMT) were prepared by an ion‐exchange reaction, and characterized using X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), X‐ray diffraction (XRD), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The specific surface areas, zeta potentials and antibacterial activity of the modified montmorillonites were also investigated. Zinc and cerium were proved to be present as bivalent zinc state and trivalent cerium state in the modified montmorillonites. For the modified montmorillonites, the d001 basal spacings increased and the particles were formed of irregular shapes. The antibacterial activity of the modified montmorillonites was enhanced with the increase of specific surface areas and zeta potentials, and Zn2+‐Ce3+ loaded montmorillonites displayed obvious synergistic antibacterial effect. When Zn/Ce atomic ratio was 1.24, the Zn‐Ce/MMT showed high antibacterial efficiency and broad‐spectrum antibacterial activity, possessing the MIC against Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Candida albicans and Mucor of 1500, 1000, 2000 and 3000 mg·L?1, respectively.  相似文献

We synthesized organosoluble, thermoplastic elastomer/clay nanocomposites by making a jelly like solution of ethylene vinyl acetate containing 28% vinyl acetate (EVA‐28) and blending it with organomodified montmorillonite. Sodium montmorillonite (Na+‐MMT) was made organophilic by the intercalation of dodecyl ammonium ions. X‐ray diffraction patterns of Na+‐MMT and its corresponding organomodified dodecyl ammonium ion intercalated montmorillonite (12Me‐MMT) showed an increase in the interlayer spacing from 11.94 to 15.78 Å. However, X‐ray diffraction patterns of the thermoplastic elastomer and its hybrids with organomodified clay contents up to 6 wt % exhibited the disappearance of basal reflection peaks within an angle range of 3–10°, supporting the formation of a delaminated configuration. A hybrid containing 8 wt % 12Me‐MMT revealed a small hump within an angle range of 5–6° because of the aggregation of silicate layers in the EVA‐28 matrix. A transmission electron microscopy image of the same hybrid showed 3–5‐nm 12Me‐MMT particles dispersed in the thermoplastic elastomer matrix; that is, it led to the formation of nanocomposites or molecular‐level composites with a delaminated configuration. The formation of nanocomposites was reflected through the unexpected improvement of thermal and mechanical properties; for example, the tensile strength of a nanocomposite containing only 4 wt % organophilic clay was doubled in comparison with that of pure EVA‐28, and the thermal stability of the same nanocomposite was higher by about 34 °C. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Flower-like magnesium hydroxide (Mg(OH)2) nanostructures were synthesized via a simple hydrothermal reaction at relatively low temperature. The Mg(OH)2 nanostructures were then added to acrylonitrile–butadiene–styrene (ABS) and cellulose acetate (CA) polymers. The effect of Mg(OH)2 nanostructures on the thermal stability of the polymeric matrixes has been investigated. The thermal decomposition of the nanocomposites shifts towards higher temperature in the presence of the Mg(OH)2. The enhancement of thermal stability of nanocomposites is due to endothermically decomposition of magnesium hydroxide that releases of water and dilutes combustible gases. Nanostructures and nanocomposites were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), differential thermal analysis (DTA), UL-94 test and limiting oxygen index (LOI) analysis.  相似文献

The synergistic effects of layered double hydroxide (LDH) with hyperfine magnesium hydroxide (HFMH) in halogen-free flame retardant ethylene-vinyl acetate (EVA)/HFMH/LDH nanocomposites have been studied by X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron spectroscopy (TEM), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), limiting oxygen index (LOI), mechanical properties' tests, and dynamic mechanical thermal analysis (DMTA). The XRD results show that the exfoliated EVA/HFMH/LDH can be obtained by controlling the LDH loading. The TEM images give the evidence that the organic-modified LDH (OM-LDH) can act as a disperser and help HFMH particles to disperse homogeneously in the EVA matrix. The TGA data demonstrate that the addition of LDH can raise 5-18 °C thermal degradation temperatures of EVA/HFMH/LDH nanocomposite samples with 5-15 phr OM-LDH compared with that of the control EVA/HFMH sample when 50% weight loss is selected as a point of comparison. The LOI and mechanical tests show that the LDH can act as flame retardant synergist and compatilizer to apparently increase the LOI and elongation at break values of EVA/HFMH/LDH nanocomposites. The DMTA data verify that the Tg value (−10 °C) of the EVA/HFMH/LDH nanocomposite sample with 15 phr LDH is much lower than that (Tg = −2 °C) of the control EVA/HFMH sample without LDH and approximates to the Tg value (−12 °C) of pure EVA, which indicates that the nanocomposites with LDH have more flexibility than that of the EVA/HFMH composites.  相似文献

The flammability characteristics and synergistic effect of hydrotalcite with microencapsulated red phosphorus (MRP) in halogen-free flame retardant ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA) composite have been studied by cone calorimeter test (CCT), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), limiting oxygen index (LOI) and UL-94 test. The results obtained by comparing the flame retardancy of hydrotalcite with magnesium hydroxide (MH) and aluminium hydroxide (AH) for their EVA composites showed that hydrotalcite has higher flame retardant effect than MH and AH at the same loading level. The CCT tests indicated that the heat release rate (HRR) and mass loss rate (MLR) of EVA composite blended with hydrotalcite greatly decreased compared with those blended with MH and AH. The LOI values of EVA/hydrotalcite composites are 3-4% higher than those of the corresponding MH composites at 40-60 wt% loading levels, and 6% higher than that of the corresponding AH composite at 40 wt% loading level. Moreover, the addition of a given amount of MRP apparently resulted in the increase of LOI value and decrease of the HRR and MLR as well the loading of hydrotalcite in EVA blend while keeping the V-0 rating in UL-94 test. However, the smoke release increased during the combustion of EVA/hydrotalcite blend containing MRP.  相似文献

In this comparative study, the effect of gamma rays on the ageing characteristics of poly(ethylene-co-vinyl acetate) (EVA) and poly(ethylene-co-vinyl acetate)/carbon black mixture (EVA/CB) was investigated in terms of thermal stability. EVA, containing 13% vinyl acetate (VA), and EVA/CB, containing 13% VA and 1% carbon black (CB), were aged at 85°C in air up to 30 weeks for thermal ageing. Same substances were aged by means of UV light with a wavelength in the vicinity of 259 nm, in air, up to 400 h for UV ageing. Same substances were also irradiated with gamma rays at ambient conditions up to 400 kGy. Following these experiments, samples which had been irradiated with gamma rays, were subjected to thermal and UV ageing under the same conditions as for unirradiated samples. Dynamic thermogravimetry studies were performed for determination of the thermal stabilities of the samples. 10 and 50% mass losses were calculated for the samples from their respective curves. As a result of thermal analysis experiments, it was found that CB dramatically loses its protective property against thermal ageing of EVA after gamma irradiation. On the other hand, gamma irradiation does not have any significant effect on the UV ageing characteristics of EVA and EVA/CB in terms of thermal stability.  相似文献
