We report spectroscopic ellipsometry studies in the energy range of 0.5-5 eV on samples of 1-10 bilayers of polymer and HgTe nanocrystals, which exhibit strong transitions at higher critical points in the dispersion relation. We show that the dispersion relation for nanocrystals can be modelled with the same concepts for critical points as used in semiconductor bulk optics. We find an energy shift of up to 0.4 eV of the critical points to higher energies compared to the HgTe bulk properties, caused by quantum confinement in the nanocrystals, which increases with decreasing nanocrystal size.  相似文献

The fundamental theoretical approach derived in A.V. Emelyanenko et al., Phys. Rev. E 74, 011705 (2006) is complemented by a consideration of the influence of the homogeneous electric field on Sm- C A * , biaxial intermediate phases, and Sm-C * . The crucial role of the induced polarization is investigated for the first time. The evolution of any tilted smectic phase in the electric field is found to meet the two thresholds. The first threshold corresponds to the unwinding process, and the second one corresponds to the phase transition into the bi-domain structure of Sm-C * , where the tilt plane has some contribution either along or against the electric field, while the average direction may still be perpendicular to the electric field. The tilt plane in the monodomain (conventional) structure preceding the second threshold is the same in every unwound phase, and is perpendicular to the electric field. No 3D distortion in Sm- C A * is predicted on application of the electric field. The entire electric-field-temperature phase diagrams including the possibility of existence of the maximal number of tilted smectic phases are plotted and compared with the experimental ones. The numerical calculations in the framework of this fundamental study are done with help of AFLC Phase Diagram Plotter software developed by the author and available at his web page.  相似文献

The spin echo decay curve of NMR protons in in-vitro rat muscle is two or three exponential as Hazlewood demonstrated in 1974. This author hypothesized that the longer T2 component is extracellular water and that the medium T2 is intracellular water. Our purpose was to test the histological significance of these two T2. Variations of water contents in two types of rat muscles were induced by electrical stimulation and osmotic diuresis and their incidence on the decomposition of the proton spin echo signal analysed. Decomposition of signal in resting muscles revealed two phases with T2 values similar to the Hazlewood's: a short phase, S, with T2 of 40 ms (20 MHz, 276 degrees K) representing 90-97% of the total signal and a long one, L, with T2 of 100-120 ms representing 3-10% of the signal. Increasing vascular volume appeared to increase the percentage of phase (L) in the total signal. Osmotic diuresis decreased the volume of the phase (S) and increased the volume of the phase (L). The use of Gd-DTPA allowed to differentiate the vascular compartment: Gd DTPA decreased in a great extent the T2 values of phase (L) and in low extent the T2 values of phases (S). From these results, it appears that phase (L) could correspond to vascular volume and that phase (S) would be interstitial and intracellular water. Elements of comparison with classical methods for determination of water compartmentation in tissues are given.  相似文献

The correlated phases in a two-dimensional electron system with a high index partially filled Landau level are studied in transport under nonequilibrium conditions by imposing a dc-current drive. At filling 1/4 and 3/4 of these Landau levels, where the charge density wave picture predicts an isotropic bubble phase, the dc drive induces anisotropic transport behavior consistent with stripe order. The easy axis of the emerging anisotropic phase is perpendicular to the drive. At half filling the anisotropic stripe phase is stabilized by the dc drive provided drive and easy-axis directions coincide.  相似文献

Twisted-grain-boundary (TGB) phases shown by some liquid-crystalline materials have properties common to those of both smectic and cholesteric phases. Following analogy between liquid crystals and super conductors proposed by de Gennes [Solid State Commun., 10, 753 (1972)], Renn and Lubensky [Phys. Rev. A, 38, 2132 (1988)] theoretically predicted a chiral analog of the smectic A (SmA*) phase, which is now known as TGBA phase. The TGBA phase was experimentally observed for the first time by Goodby et al. [Nature, 337, 449 (1989)] in the chiral homologous series of ferroelectric liquid-crystal material R- and S-1-methylheptyl 4′-[(4′′-n-alkoxyphenyl)propionoyloxy]-biphenyl-4-carboxylates (nP1M7), with n?=?13,14,15. Since then, more than a hundred pure and mixed systems showing TGBA phase have been found. Later, Renn derived a mean-field phase diagram based on the chiral Chen-Lubensky model, and predicted two more TGB phases, namely TGBC and TGBC?. These two phases have also been experimentally observed in many systems, and in a few, the phase diagram is similar to that predicted by Renn. Unlike the TGBA phase, several theoretical models have been proposed for TGBC and TGBC? phases, and it remains to be ascertained whether all the types of proposed TGBC/TGBC? structures experimentally exist. A review of the theoretically predicted and experimentally observed TGB phases is given in the present article. Some recently observed novel optical textures of the TGB phases are also reported.  相似文献

The amplification of the emission of a microlaser based on a cholesteric liquid crystal by means of a uniformly oriented layer of a laser-dye-doped nematic liquid crystal is demonstrated. The nematic liquid crystal is characterized by the anisotropy of optical properties, including the amplification coefficient, which opens the possibility of creating amplifiers controlled by a low electric field.  相似文献

Ferroelectric BaTiO3 nanocrystalline films (BTNFs) with the crystalline sizes of about 30 nm were grown on Pt/Ti/SiO2/Si substrates by a modified sol-gel method. Spectroscopic ellipsometry (SE) was used to characterize the films in the photon energy range of 1.5-5.0 eV with a five-phase layered model (air/surface rough layer/BaTiO3/interface layer/Pt). The optical properties in the transparent and absorption regions have been investigated with the Forouhi-Bloomer dispersion relation. With the aid of the structural and dielectric function models, the microstructure and electronic structure of the BTNFs can be readily obtained. It was found that the refractive index reaches the value of 2.20 in the transparent region. Based on the Sellmeier dispersion analysis, the single-oscillator energy is about 4.7 eV for the BTNFs. The long wavelength refractive index n(0) can be estimated to about 2.00 at zero point. The direct optical band gap energy approaches approximately 4.2 eV and Urbach band tail energy is 262±2 and 268±1 meV respectively with increasing crystalline size. A higher band gap observed can be owing to the known quantum confinement effect in the nanocrystalline formation and different fraction of amorphous and crystalline components. The theoretical analysis based on the effective mass approximation theory is well used to explain these experimental data.  相似文献

The rotational spectra of six 13C isotopomers in natural abundance and of eight synthesized deuterium isotopomers of azulene have been measured using pulsed nozzle cavity and waveguide Fourier transform microwave (FTMW) spectrometers over the 8–18?GHz range. The spectrum of the parent species was remeasured with the higher resolution of FTMW spectrometers. Rotational constants have been fitted to the measured frequencies of the rotational transitions of all measured isotopomers. In addition, centrifugal distortion constants were determined for the parent species and the deuterated isotopomers. The permanent electric dipole moment was redetermined from Stark splittings. The C2v covering symmetry of the azulene molecule has been demonstrated unambiguously from a single set of observed transitions for the asymmetrically substituted 1-, 4-, 5- and 9-13C–isotopomers at twice the intensity of the symmetrically substituted 2- and 6-13C–isotopomers. The positions of all nuclei of the planar non–alternating aromatic ring system of azulene have been determined from moments of inertia of all available isotopomers. Different methods have been used to arrive at a near equilibrium structure.  相似文献

We investigate the relative validity of the Bruggeman effective-medium approximation and several alloy models to describe interfaces in the analysis of spectroscopic ellipsometric data of laminar samples, using data obtained on an AlxGa1−xAs multilayer sample fabricated specifically for this purpose. The investigation highlights the types of errors that result from the use of inappropriate models. Optimum results are obtained with the alloy model where the graded-composition regions are approximated with multilayer stacks.  相似文献

X-ray diffractometer traces obtained from PVC samples maintained at temperatures in the range 180 to 200°C indicate that crystal melting is followed by a state of intermediate order rather than by a truly amorphous state. In addition, this study raises serious doubts regarding the validity of the assumption that the x-ray scattering profile from quenched PVC samples is representative of the amorphous phase. Any crystallinity values derived on the basis of that assumption are therefore open to question.  相似文献
