Structural and electron-transfer characteristics are reported for two classes of zinc porphyrin monolayers attached to Si(100) surfaces via Si-C bonds. One class, designated ZnP(CH(2))(n)- (n = 2-4), contains an alkyl linker appended to the meso-position of the porphyrin, with the nonlinking substituents being p-tolyl groups. The other, designated ZnPPh(CH(2))(n)- (n = 0-3), contains a phenyl or phenylalkyl linker appended to the meso-position of the porphyrin, with the nonlinking substituents being mesityl groups. Both classes of zinc porphyrin monolayers on Si(100) were examined using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and various electrochemical methods. The studies reveal the following: (1) The structural and electron-transfer characteristics of the ZnP(CH(2))(n)- and ZnPPh(CH(2))(n)- monolayers are generally similar to those of monolayers formed from porphyrins with analogous linkers, but anchored with an O, a S, or a Se atom. (2) The ZnP(CH(2))(n)-, ZnPPh-, and ZnPPhCH(2)- monolayers exhibit lower saturation coverages and have their porphyrin ring more tilted with respect to the surface normal than the ZnPPh(CH(2))(2)- and ZnPPh(CH(2))(3)- monolayers. (3) The electron-transfer rates for both the ZnP(CH(2))(n)- and ZnPPh(CH(2))(n)- classes of monolayers monotonically decrease as the length of the linker increases. (4) For all the ZnP(CH(2))(n)- and ZnPPh(CH(2))(n)- monolayers, both electron-transfer rates and charge-dissipation rates decrease monotonically as the surface coverage increases. Collectively, the studies reported herein provide a detailed picture of how the linker type influences the structural and electron-transfer characteristics of these general classes of monolayers.  相似文献

A variety of molecular gradients of alkanethiols with the structure HS-(CH(2))(m)-X (m = 15; X = COOH, CH(2)NH(2), or CH(3)) and oligo(ethylene glycol)-terminated alkanethiols with the structures HS-(CH(2))(15)-CO-NH-Eg(n) (n = 2, 4, or 6), HS-(CH(2))(15)-CO-NH-Eg(2)-(CH(2))(2)-NH-CO-(CH(2))(4)-biotin, and HS-(CH(2))(15)-CO-NH-Eg(6)-CH(2)-COOH were prepared on polycrystalline gold films. These gradients were designed to serve as model surfaces for fundamental studies of protein adsorption and immobilization phenomena. Ellipsometry, infrared spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, operating in scanning mode, were used to monitor the layer composition, gradient profiles, tail group conformation, and overall structural quality of the gradient assemblies. The gradient profiles were found to be 4-10 mm wide, and they increased in width with increasing difference in molecular complexity between the thiols used to form the gradient. The oligo(ethylene glycol) thiols are particularly interesting because they can be used to prepare so-called conformational gradients, that is, gradients that display a variation in oligo(ethylene glycol) chain conformation from all trans on the extreme Eg(2,4) sides, via an amorphous-like phase in the mixing regimes, to helical at the extreme Eg(6) sides. We demonstrate herein a series of experiments where the above gradients are used to evaluate nonspecific binding of the plasma protein fibrinogen, and in agreement with previous studies, the highest amounts of nonspecifically bound fibrinogen were observed on all-trans monolayers, that is, on the extreme Eg(2,4) sides. Moreover, gradients between Eg(2) and a biotinylated analogue have been prepared to optimize the conditions for the immobilization of streptavidin. Ellipsometry and infrared spectroscopy reveal high levels of immobilization over a fairly broad range of compositions in the gradient regime, with a maximum between 50 and 60% of the biotinylated analogue in the monolayer. A pI gradient composed of (NH(3)(+)/COO(-))-terminated thiols was also prepared and evaluated with respect to its ability to separate differently charged proteins, pepsin, and lysozyme, on a solid surface.  相似文献

The interaction of small phospholipid vesicles with well-characterized surfaces has been studied to assess the effect of the surface free energy of the underlying monolayer on the formation of phospholipid/alkanethiol hybrid bilayer membranes (HBMs). The surface free energy was changed in a systematic manner using single-component alkanethiol monolayers and monolayers of binary mixtures of thiols. The binary surfaces were prepared on gold by self-assembly from binary solutions of the thiols HS-(CH(2))(n)()-X (n = 11, X = CH(3) or OH) in THF. Surface plasmon resonance (SPR), electrical capacitance, and atomic force microscopy (AFM) measurements were used to characterize the interaction of palmitoyl,oleoyl-phosphatidylcholine (POPC) vesicles with the surfaces. For all surfaces examined, it appears that the polar part of surface energy influences the nature of the POPC assembly that associates with the surface. Comparison of optical, capacitance, and AFM data suggests that vesicles can remain intact or partially intact even at surfaces with a contact angle with water of close to 100 degrees. In addition, comparison of the alkanethiols of different chain lengths and the fluorinated compound HS-(CH(2))(2)-(CF(2))(8)-CF(3) that characterize with a low value of the polar part of the surface energy suggests that the quality of the underlying monolayer in terms of number of defects has a significant influence on the packing density of the resulting HBM layer.  相似文献

Cubane-type clusters [Fe(4)S(4)(SR*)(4)](2-) containing chiral thiolate ligands with R* = CH(Me)Ph (1), CH(2)CH(Me)Et (2), and CH(2)CH(OH)CH(2)OH (3) have been prepared by ligand substitution in the reaction systems [Fe(4)S(4)(SEt)(4)]/R*SH (1-3, acetonitrile) and [Fe(4)S(4)Cl(4)](2-)/NaSR*(3, Me(2)SO). Reactions with successive equivalents of thiol or thiolate generate the species [Fe(4)S(4)L(4-n)(SR*)(n)](2-) (L = SEt, Cl) with n = 1-4. Clusters 1 and 2 were prepared with racemic thiols leading to the possible formation of one enantiomeric pair (n = 1) and seven diastereomers and their enantiomers (n = 2-4). Reactions were monitored by isotropically shifted (1)H NMR spectra in acetonitrile or Me(2)SO. In systems affording 1 and 2 as final products, individual mixed-ligand species could not be detected. However, crystallization of (Et(4)N)(2)[1] afforded 1-[SS(RS)(RS)] in which two sites are disordered because of occupancy of R and S ligands. Similarly, (Et(4)N)(2)[2] led to 2-[SSSS], a consequence of spontaneous resolution upon crystallization. The clusters 3-[RRRR] and 3-[SSSS] were obtained from enantiomerically pure thiols. Successive reactions lead to detection of species with n = 1-4 by appearance of four pairs of diastereotopic SCH(2) signals in both acetonitrile and Me(2)SO reaction systems. Identical spectra were obtained with racemic, R-(-), and S-(+) thiols, indicating that ligand-ligand interactions are too weak to allow detection of diastereomers (e.g., [SSSS] vs [SSRR]). The stability of 3 in Me(2)SO/H(2)O media is described.  相似文献

A series of 2-alkyl-2-methylpropane-1,3-dithiol derivatives with increasing alkyl chain lengths (i.e., CH3(CH2)mC(CH3)[CH2SH]2, where m = 7, 9, 11, 13, 15) were synthesized and used to generate self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) on gold. The resulting monolayers were analyzed by ellipsometry, contact angle goniometry, polarization modulation infrared reflection-absorption spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. These data were compared with those obtained on SAMs on gold derived from normal alkanethiols (CH3(CH2)(m+2)SH) and 2-monoalkylpropane-1,3-dithiols (CH3(CH2)(m)CH[CH2SH]2) having the same number of carbon atoms in the primary chain. The results demonstrate that the 2-alkyl-2-methylpropane-1,3-dithiols generate conformationally disordered monolayer films in which the density of alkyl chains is less than those generated from normal alkanethiols and the 2-monoalkylpropane-1,3-dithiols.  相似文献

The reaction of vapor-phase alkyl isocyanates (O=C=N-(CH2)n-1CH3) with OH-terminated alkanethiol template monolayers on Au produces well-organized self-assembled monolayers, containing intrachain carbamate linkages (Au/S(CH2)16O(C=O)NH(CH2)n-1CH3, where n = 1-8, 11, and 12). X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, contact angle goniometry, and reflection absorption infrared spectroscopy suggest that the template surface completely reacts with the isocyanates yielding a monolayer that contains an interchain hydrogen-bonded carbamate network. Spectroscopic data indicates that the alkyl underlayer remains well ordered following reaction with the isocyanates. The order of the overlayer and the hydrogen-bonding interactions between adjacent chains increase as a function of the alkyl isocyanate chain length, n. The overlayer appears to be well ordered for n > or = 5.  相似文献

In-situ spectroscopic ellipsometry (SE) was utilized to examine the formation of the self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) of the water-soluble oligo(ethylene oxide) [OEO] disulfide [S(CH(2)CH(2)O)(6)CH(3)](2) {[S(EO)(6)](2)} and two analogous thiols - HS(CH(2)CH(2)O)(6)CH(3) {(EO)(6)} and HS(CH(2))(3)O(CH(2)CH(2)O)(5)CH(3) {C(3)(EO)(5)} - on Au from aqueous solutions. Kinetic data for all compounds follow simple Langmuirian models with the disulfide reaching a self-limiting final state (d=1.2nm) more rapidly than the full coverage final states of the thiol analogs (d=2.0nm). The in-situ ellipsometric thicknesses of all compounds were found to be nearly identical to earlier ex-situ ellipsometric measurements suggesting similar surface coverages and structural models in air and under water. Exposure to bovine serum albumin (BSA) shows the self-limiting (d=1.2nm) [S(EO)(6)](2) SAMs to be the most highly protein resistant surfaces relative to bare Au and completely-formed SAMs of the two analogous thiols and octadecanethiol (ODT). When challenged with up to near physiological levels of BSA (2.5mg/mL), protein adsorption on the final state [S(EO)(6)](2) SAM was only 3% of that which adsorbed to the bare Au and ODT SAMs.  相似文献

This paper describes an experimentally simple system for measuring rates of electron transport across organic thin films having a range of molecular structures. The system uses a metal--insulator--metal junction based on self-assembled monolayers (SAMs); it is particularly easy to assemble. The junction consists of a SAM supported on a silver film (Ag-SAM(1)) in contact with a second SAM supported on the surface of a drop of mercury (Hg-SAM(2))--that is, a Ag-SAM(1)SAM(2)-Hg junction. SAM(1) and SAM(2) can be derived from the same or different thiols. The current that flowed across junctions with SAMs of aliphatic thiols or aromatic thiols on Ag and a SAM of hexadecane thiol on Hg depended both on the molecular structure and on the thickness of the SAM on Ag: the current density at a bias of 0.5 V ranged from 2 x 10(-10) A/cm(2) for HS(CH(2))(15)CH(3) on Ag to 1 x 10(-6) A/cm(2) for HS(CH(2))(7)CH(3) on Ag, and from 3 x 10(-6) A/cm(2) for HS(Ph)(3)H (Ph = 1,4-C(6)H(4)) on Ag to 7 x 10(-4) A/cm(2) for HSPhH on Ag. The current density increased roughly linearly with the area of contact between SAM(1) and SAM(2), and it was not different between Ag films that were 100 or 200 nm thick. The current--voltage curves were symmetrical around V = 0. The current density decreased with increasing distance between the electrodes according to the relation I = I(0)e(-beta d(Ag,Hg)), where d(Ag,Hg) is the distance between the electrodes, and beta is the structure-dependent attenuation factor for the molecules making up SAM(1). At an applied potential of 0.5 V, beta was 0.87 +/- 0.1 A(-1) for alkanethiols, 0.61 +/- 0.1 A(-1) for oligophenylene thiols, and 0.67 +/- 0.1 A(-1) for benzylic derivatives of oligophenylene thiols. The values of beta did not depend significantly on applied potential over the range of 0.1 to 1 V. These junctions provide a test bed with which to screen the intrinsic electrical properties of SAMs made up of molecules with different structures; information obtained using these junctions will be useful in correlating molecular structure and rates of electron transport.  相似文献

Self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) of HS(CH(2))(n)COOH, n = 5, 10, 15 deposited from ethanol solution onto gold are prepared by five approaches, and their packing densities are evaluated by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) measurements. The five approaches are: (1) direct deposition; (2) acetic-acid-assisted deposition; (3) butyl-amine-assisted deposition; (4) displacement of a preformed HS(CH(2))(n)CH(3) (n = 5, 10, 15) SAMs; and (5) co-deposition with HS(CH(2))(n)CH(3) (n = 5, 10, 15). Packing density metrics are calculated from measurements of SAM and substrate photoemission intensities and their attenuations by two methods. In one case the attenuated photoemissions are expressed as a ratio relative to comparable measurements on an experimental HS(CH(2))(n)CH(3) model system. In the other case a new method is introduced where a calculated attenuation based on theoretical random coil and extended chain models is used as the reference to determine a packing density fraction. Packing densities are also correlated with the S2p(Au-bonded):Au4f peak area ratios and with shifts in the C1s binding energies. SAMs prepared by the direct deposition are a partial multilayer where a second molecular layer is physisorbed onto the SAM and not removable by solvent washing. The addition of acetic acid to the deposition solution disrupts dimer associations of HS(CH(2))(n)COOH in solution and at the surface of the monolayer and yields the most ordered monolayer with the highest density of -COOH groups. The addition of butyl amine results in a labile ammonium carbonate ion pair formation but results in a lower packing density in the SAM. The displacement of the preformed HS(CH(2))(n)CH(3) SAM and the co-deposition of HS(CH(2))(n)CH(3) with HS(CH(2))(n)COOH result in SAMs with little incorporation of the -COOH component.  相似文献

We have studied the oxidation of self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) of alkanes and alkenes with a thermal beam of OH radicals. The target films were produced by bonding alkane thiols and alkene thiols to a gold surface and the SAMs are mounted in a vacuum chamber at a base pressure of 10-9 Torr. Hydroxyl radicals were produced by a corona discharge in an Ar/H2O2/water mixture. The resultant molecular beam was scanned by an electrostatic hexapole and the OH radicals [4 (+/- 1) x 1011 OH radicals cm-2 sec-1] were focused onto the target SAM. All of the hydroxyl radicals impinging on the SAM surface are rotationally (J' ' 相似文献

Using a micromechanical cantilever device, the surface stress induced during the growth of alkanedithiol (HS(CH2)nSH) monolayers on gold in solution is continuously monitored and reported. Adsorption of alkanedithiols of varying chain lengths is observed and compared to each other, as well as to the adsorption of hydroxyalkanethiols (HS(CH2)nOH) and alkanethiols (HS(CH2)nCH3). The results have revealed a significant change in surface stress on the basis of the chain length of the alkanedithiol. The long-chain (n > 10) alkanedithiol adsorption imposes a tensile stress on the gold-coated surface of the cantilever rather than the compressive stress exhibited by both alkanethiols and short-chain dithiols. Our results suggest a phenomenon in which the two thiols of the alkanedithiol adsorb onto the gold surface forming a loop inducing a tensile stress on the cantilever for long chain lengths. This study shows that micromechanical cantilever sensors can be very valuable tools in the exploration and characterization of self-assembled monolayers.  相似文献

Self-assembled monolayers of omega-(4'-methylbiphenyl-4-yl) butanethiol (H3C-C6H4-C6H4-(CH2)n-SH) on Au(111) substrates were investigated with scanning tunneling microscopy and contact angle measurements. A striking polymorphism was observed upon annealing, and structural changes were paralleled by a switch in stability against exchange by other thiols from unstable to stable. The phase formed at temperatures above 413 K was characterized by a very high structural perfection over areas exceeding 105 nm2. The results suggest an additional dimension in the control of structure and properties of thiol monolayers if different factors contributing to the energetics of SAMs enter in a competing rather than a cooperative way.  相似文献

The influence of a hydrogen bond donor and acceptor in the hydrophobic part of an amphiphile on the monolayer stability at the air/water interface is investigated. For that purpose, the amide group is integrated into the alkyl chain. Eight methyl octadecanoates have been synthesized with the amide group in two orientations and in different positions of the alkyl chain, namely, CH3O2C(CH2)m NHCO(CH2)n CH3 (n + m = 14): 1 (m = 1), 3 (m = 2), 5 (m = 3), 7 (m = 14); and CH3O2C(CH2)m CONH(CH2)n CH3: 2 (m = 1), 4 (m = 2), 6 (m = 3), 8 (m = 14). The monolayers have been characterized by their pi/A isotherms, their temperature dependence and Brewster angle microscopy (BAM). Amphiphile 1 with the amide group close to the ester group (m = 1) behaves like an unsubstituted fatty acid ester, while 3, 5, and 7, with the amide group in an intermediate and terminal position, exhibit a two-phase region. The amphiphiles 2, 4, 6, and 8, with a reversed orientation of the amide group, all exhibit a two-phase region with higher plateau pressures and lower collapse pressures than those of 1, 3, 5, and 7. For 7 and 8, domains of the liquid condensed (LC) phase are visualized by BAM in the two-phase region. The liquid expanded (LE)/LC-phase transitions are all exothermic with enthalpies deltaH ranging from -31 to -12 kJ/mol. Comparison with other bipolar amphiphiles indicates that the LC phase is better stabilized by the hydroxy and dihydroxy groups than by the amide group. For model compounds of 1-4, optimized conformers in the LE and LC phases have been determined by density functional theory (DFT) calculations.  相似文献

4-methyl-4'-(n-mercaptoalkyl)biphenyl (CH3-C6H4-C6H4-(CH2)n-SH, n=3-6, BPn) monolayers assembled on Au(111)-(1x1) in 1,3,5,-trimethylbenzene (TMB) at various temperatures are studied by scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and scanning tunneling spectroscopy (STS). High resolution STM images reveal that BP3 and BP5 form a (sqrt 3x2sqrt 3) repeating motif superimposed on a temperature-dependent Moire pattern. BP4 and BP6 adlayers are characterized by a coexisting (2sqrt 3x5sqrt 3) majority phase and a temperature-dependent (3xpsqrt 3) minority phase. Assembly at 60 degrees C or 90 degrees C leads to p=5. Compression of the adlayer was found at higher temperatures. Combined with high-resolution structure experiments, the electronic characteristics of BP3 and BP4 self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) were studied by monitoring current-distance (iT-Deltaz) and current-voltage (iT-Ebias) characteristics in TMB employing a gold STM tip|BPn|Au(111)-(1x1) configuration. The semilogarithmic (iT-Deltaz) plots yielded three linear regions in the range 10 pA相似文献

Self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) of functionalized azobenzene thiols (RAzoCnSH, n=3-6 for R=H, abbreviated as AzoCnSH; and n=4 for R=CH(3)CONH, abbreviated as aaAzoC4SH) on different substrates RAzoCnSz.sbnd;z.sfnc;S (S represents substrates of vacuum-deposited gold (Au), silver foil (Ag), HNO(3) etched silver foil (EAg), and silver mirror (mAg)) have been studied by SERS in the near-infrared region. SERS of the SAMs on EAg and/or mAg exhibit SERS effects that vary with etching time and/or deposition time. The most appropriate time is 5 s for etching in 1:1 HNO(3) and 40 s for deposition in 0.1 M Ag(NH(3))(2)NO(3). Further, a layer of Ag mirror was conveniently deposited on the top of the SAMs on different substrates, yielding a more efficient SERS-active system possessing a "sandwiched" structure of mAgz.sfnc;RAzoCnS-z.sfnc;S. An appropriate surface roughness is required for the strongest SERS effect. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) indicates that there exist a large number of projects around 100 nm on the surface showing the strongest SERS effect. When the surface roughness is decreased or increased, the SERS effect decreases sharply. The relationship between the SERS effect and the structural nature was investigated and showed that the enhancement factor decays exponentially with increasing in distances of the azobenzene group from the underlying substrate or the overlying silver mirror. This result reveals that the SERS effect may be the result of the electromagnetic coupling effect between two metal layers.  相似文献

The hydrothermal reactions of a vanadium source, an appropriate diphosphonate ligand, and water in the presence of HF provide a series of compounds with neutral V-P-O networks as the recurring structural motif. When the {O3P(CH2)(n)PO3}4- diphosphonate tether length n is 2-5, metal-oxide hybrids of type 1, [V2O2(H2O){O3P(CH2)(n)PO3}] x xH2O, are isolated. The type 1 oxides exhibit the prototypical three-dimensional (3-D) "pillared" layer architecture. When n is increased to 6-8, the two-dimensional (2-D) "pillared" slab structure of the type 2 oxides [V2O2(H2O)4{O3P(CH2)6PO3}] is encountered. Further lengthening of the spacer to n = 9 provides another 3-D structure, type 3, constructed from the condensation of pillared slabs to give V-P-O double layers as the network substructure. When organic cations are introduced to provide charge balance for anionic V-P-O networks, oxides of types 4-7 are observed. For spacer length n = 3, a range of organodiammonium cations are accommodated by the same 3-D "pillared" layer oxovanadium diphosphonate framework in the type 4 materials [H3N(CH2)(n)NH3][V4O4(OH)2 {O3P(CH)3PO3}2] x xH2O [n = 2, x = 6 (4a); n = 3, x = 3 (4b); n = 4, x = 2 (4c); n = 5, x = 1 (4d); n = 6, x = 0.5 (4e); n = 7, x = 0 (4f)] and [H3NR]y[V4O4(OH)2 {O3P(CH)3PO3}2] x xH2O [R = -CH2(NH3)CH2CH3, y = 1, x = 0 (4g); R = -CH3, n = 2, x = 3 (4h); R = -CH2CH3, y = 2, x = 1 (4i); R = -CH2CH2CH3, y = 2, x = 0 (4j); cation = [H2N(CH2CH3)2], y = 2, x = 0 (4k)]. These oxides exhibit two distinct interlamellar domains, one occupied by the cations and the second by water of crystallization. Furthermore, as the length of the cation increases, the organodiammonium component spills over into the hydrophilic domain to displace the water of crystallization. When the diphosphonate tether length is increased to n = 5, structure type 5, [H3N(CH2)2NH3][V4O4(OH)2(H2O){O3P(CH2)5PO3}2] x H2O, is obtained. This oxide possesses a 2-D "pillared" network or slab structure, similar in gross profile to that of type 2 oxides and with the cations occupying the interlamellar domain. In contrast, shortening the diphosphonate tether length to n = 2 results in the 3-D oxovanadium organophosphonate structure of the type 7 oxide [H3N(CH2)5NH3][V3O3{O3P(CH2)2PO3}2]. The ethylenediphosphonate ligand does not pillar V-P-O networks in this instance but rather chelates to a vanadium center in the construction of complex polyhedral connectivity of 7. Substitution of piperazinium cations for the simple alkyl chains of types 4, 5, and 7 provides the 2-D pillared layer structure of the type 6 oxides, [H2N(CH2CH2)NH2][V2O2{O3P(CH)(n)PO3H}2] [n = 2 (6a); n = 4 (6b); n = 6 (6c)]. The structural diversity of the system is reflected in the magnetic properties and thermal behavior of the oxides, which are also discussed.  相似文献
