Factoring weakly compact operators

The main result is that every weakly compact operator between Banach spaces factors through a reflexive Banach space. Applications of the result and technique of proof include new results (e.g., separable conjugate spaces embed isomorphically in spaces with boundedly complete bases; convex weakly compact sets are affinely homeomorphic to sets in a reflexive space) and simple proofs of known results (e.g., there is a reflexive space failing the Banach-Saks property; if X is separable, then $\text{X =}\text{Z}{}^7\text{Z}$ for some Z; there is a separable space which does not contain l₁ whose dual is nonseparable).

Ideals of homogeneous polynomials and weakly compact approximation property in Banach spaces

We show that a Banach space E has the weakly compact approximation property if and only if each continuous Banach-valued polynomial on E can be uniformly approximated on compact sets by homogeneous polynomials which are members of the ideal of homogeneous polynomials generated by weakly compact linear operators. An analogous result is established also for the compact approximation property.     

Isometric approximation property of unbounded sets

We give a necessary and sufficient quantitative geometric condition for an unbounded set A ? Rⁿ to have the following property with a given c > 0: For every ε ≥ 0 and for every map f: A → Rⁿ such that , there is an isometry T: A → Rⁿ such that ¦Tx?fx¦ ≤ cε for all x ∈ A.     

Topological characterisation of weakly compact operators

Let X be a Banach space. Then there is a locally convex topology for X, the “Right topology,” such that a linear map T, from X into a Banach space Y, is weakly compact, precisely when T is a continuous map from X, equipped with the “Right” topology, into Y equipped with the norm topology. When T is only sequentially continuous with respect to the Right topology, it is said to be pseudo weakly compact. This notion is related to Pelczynski's Property (V).     

Uniform factorization for compact sets of operators

We prove a factorization result for relatively compact subsets of compact operators using the Bartle and Graves Selection Theorem, a characterization of relatively compact subsets of tensor products due to Grothendieck, and results of Figiel and Johnson on factorization of compact operators. A further proof, essentially based on the Banach-Dieudonné Theorem, is included. Our methods enable us to give an easier proof of a result of W.H. Graves and W.M. Ruess.

     

Isometric approximation property in euclidean spaces

We give a necessary and sufficient quantitative geometric condition for a compact setA⊂R ⁿ to have the following property with a givenc≥1: For everyɛ>0 and for every mapf: A→R ⁿ such that there is an isometryS: A→R ⁿ such that |Sx−fx|≤cɛ for allx∈A.     

Factoring weakly compact operators and the inhomogeneous Cauchy problem

By using the technique of factoring weakly compact operators through reflexive Banach spaces we prove that a class of ordinary differential equations with Lipschitz continuous perturbations has a strong solution when the problem is governed by a closed linear operator generating a strongly continuous semigroup of compact operators.

     

Real interpolation of Banach algebras and factorization of weakly compact homomorphisms

We consider the problem of when the real interpolation method respects Banach-algebra structure. Using our results, we show that every weakly compact homomorphism between Banach algebras factors through a reflexive Banach algebra.     

On interpolation of Banach algebras and factorization of weakly compact homomorphisms

We show a necessary and sufficient condition on the lattice Γ for the general real method to preserve the Banach-algebra structure. As an application we derive factorization of weakly compact homomorphisms through interpolation properties of weakly compact operators.     

Ideals of operators and the metric approximation property

We prove that a Banach space X has the metric approximation property if and only if , the space of all finite rank operators, is an ideal in , the space of all bounded operators, for every Banach space Y. Moreover, X has the shrinking metric approximation property if and only if is an ideal in for every Banach space Y.Similar results are obtained for u-ideals and the corresponding unconditional metric approximation properties.     

Monte Carlo approximation of weakly singular integral operators

We study the randomized approximation of weakly singular integral operators. For a suitable class of kernels having a standard type of singularity and being otherwise of finite smoothness, we develop a Monte Carlo multilevel method, give convergence estimates and prove lower bounds which show the optimality of this method and establish the complexity. As an application we obtain optimal methods for and the complexity of randomized solution of the Poisson equation in simple domains, when the solution is sought on subdomains of arbitrary dimension.
