Mathematical programs, that become convex programs after freezing some variables, are termed partly convex. For such programs we give saddle-point conditions that are both necessary and sufficient that a feasible point be globally optimal. The conditions require cooperation of the feasible point tested for optimality, an assumption implied by lower semicontinuity of the feasible set mapping. The characterizations are simplified if certain point-to-set mappings satisfy a sandwich condition.The tools of parametric optimization and basic point-to-set topology are used in formulating both optimality conditions and numerical methods. In particular, we solve a large class of Zermelo's navigation problems and establish global optimality of the numerical solutions.Research partly supported by NSERC of Canada.  相似文献

The theory of discretization methods to control problems and their convergence under strong stable optimality conditions in recent years has been thoroughly investigated by several authors. A particularly interesting question is to ask for a natural smoothness category for the optimal controls as functions of time.In several papers, Hager and Dontchev considered Riemann integrable controls. This smoothness class is characterized by global, averaged criteria. In contrast, we consider strictly local properties of the solution function. As a first step, we introduce tools for the analysis of L elements at a point. Using afterwards Robinson's strong regularity theory, under appropriate first and second order optimality conditions we obtain structural as well as certain pseudo-Lipschitz properties with respect to the time variable for the control.Consequences for the behavior of discrete solution approximations are discussed in the concluding section with respect to L as well as L 2 topologies.  相似文献

Summary In the paper we consider, from a topological point of view, the set of all continuous functionsf:I I for which the unique continuous solution:I – [0, ) of(f(x)) (x, (x)) and(x, (x)) (f(x)) (x, (x)), respectively, is the zero function. It is well known that PI has a unique real solution (called a tritronquée solution) asymptotic to and decaying monotonically on the positive real line. Let T- S, be a family of not necessarily bounded semi-Fredholm operators, where T and S are operators acting between Banach spaces X and Y, and where S is bounded with D(S) D(T). For compact sets , as well as for certain open sets , we investigate existence and minimal rank of bounded feedback perturbations of the form F=BE such that min.ind (T-S+F)=0 for all . Here B is a given operator from a linear space Z to Y and E is some operator from X to Z.We give a simple characterization of that situation, when such regularizing feedback perturbations exist and show that for compact sets the minimal rank never exceeds max { min.ind (T-S) }+1. Moreover, an example shows that the minimal rank, in fact, may increase from max {...} to max {...}+1, if the given B enforces a certain structure of the feedbachk perturbation F.However, the minimal rank is equal to max { min.ind (T-S) }, if is an open set such that min.ind (T-S) already vanishes for all but finitely many points . We illustrate this result by applying it to the stabilization of certain infinite-dimensional dynamical systems in Hilbert space.  相似文献

Empirical Bayes (EB) estimation of the parameter vector =(,2) in a multiple linear regression modelY=X+ is considered, where is the vector of regression coefficient, N(0,2 I) and 2 is unknown. In this paper, we have constructed the EB estimators of by using the kernel estimation of multivariate density function and its partial derivatives. Niche width theory, a part of organizational ecology, predicts whether specialist or generalist forms of organizations have higher fitness, in a continually changing environment. To this end, niche width theory uses a mathematical model borrowed from biology. In this paper, we first loosen the specialist-generalist dichotomy, so that we can predict the optimal degree of specialization. Second, we generalize the model to a larger class of environmental conditions, on the basis of the model's underlying assumptions. Third, we criticize the way the biological model is treated in sociological theory. Two of the model's dimensions seem to be confused, i.e., that of trait and environment; the predicted optimal specialization is a property of individual organizations, not of populations; and, the distinction between fine and coarse grained environments is superfluous.  相似文献

In this paper, we give a new branch and bound algorithm for the global optimization problem with bound constraints. The algorithm is based on the use of inclusion functions. The bounds calculated for the global minimum value are proved to be correct, all rounding errors are rigorously estimated. Our scheme attempts to exclude most uninteresting parts of the search domain and concentrates on its promising subsets. This is done as fast as possible (by involving local descent methods), and uses little information as possible (no derivatives are required). Numerical results for many well-known problems as well as some comparisons with other methods are given.  相似文献

The number of subgroups of type and cotype in a finite abelian p-group of type is a polynomialg with integral coefficients. We prove g has nonnegative coefficients for all partitions and if and only if no two parts of differ by more than one. Necessity follows from a few simple facts about Hall-Littlewood symmetric functions; sufficiency relies on properties of certain order-preserving surjections that associate to each subgroup a vector dominated componentwise by . The nonzero components of (H) are the parts of , the type of H; if no two parts of differ by more than one, the nonzero components of – (H) are the parts of , the cotype of H.
