An investigation was made of the reflection of planar shock waves from cones. 86 cones, the half apex angle of which varied from 10° to 52° at every 0.5°, were installed in a 60 mm×150 mm diaphragmless shock tube equipped with holographic interferometry. The diaphragmless shock tube had a high degree of reproducibility with which the scatter of shock wave Mach number was within ±0.25% for shock wave Mach number ranging from 1.16 to approximately 2.0. The reflection of shock waves over cones was visualized using double exposure holographic interferometry. Whitham's geometrical shock wave dynamics was used to analyse the motion of Mach stems over cones. It is found that for relatively smaller apex angles of cones trajectory angles of resulting irregular reflections coincide with the so-called glancing incidence angles and their Mach stems appear to be continuously curved from its intersection point with the incident shock wave, which shows the chractericstic of von Neumann reflection. The domain of the existence of the von Neumann reflection was analytically obtained and was found to be broadened much more widely than that of two-dimensional reflections of shock waves over wedges.

The transition from regular to Mach interaction is investigated in connection with the interaction of two plane weak or moderate shock waves of different intensity in a two-phase gas-liquid medium over the entire range of gas contents. A nonmonotonic dependence of the transition limit and the flow parameters on the gas content is detected. The investigation extends the results of [1] corresponding to the reflection of a shock wave from a wall. At intermediate gas contents in the case of opposing shock waves, analogous to the normal reflection of a shock wave from a solid wall, the results are in agreement with [2]. In the case of weak shock waves non-linear asymptotic expansions [3] are employed. In the extreme cases of single-phase media the results coincide with the findings of [3, 4]. A new criterion is suggested to define the point of transition between regular and Mach reflection. The suggested criterion is based on the natural tendency of a physical system to minimize its energy. The increases of the specific energy behind the reflected shock of a regular reflection and behind the Mach stem of a Mach reflection are calculated. It is hypothesized that the type of reflection that will occur is that which produces the smaller change of specific energy. The transition angles predicted using this criterion show better agreement with experimental results than those predicted using the detachment criterion for incident shock waves with Mach numbers between 1.1 and 2.0.This article was processed using Springer-Verlag TEX Shock Waves macro package

An experimental study shows that the Guderley reflection (GR) of shock waves can be produced in a standard shock tube. A new technique was utilised which comprises triple point of a developed weak Mach reflection undergoing a number of reflections off the ceiling and floor of the shock tube before arriving at the test section. Both simple perturbation sources and diverging ramps were used to generate a transverse wave in the tube which then becomes the weak reflected wave of the reflection pattern. Tests were conducted for three ramp angles (10°, 15°, and 20°) and two perturbation sources for a range of Mach numbers (1.10–1.40) and two shock tube expansion chamber lengths (2.0 and 4.0 m). It was found that the length of the Mach stem of the reflection pattern is the overall vertical distance traveled by the triple point. Images with equivalent Mach stem lengths in the order of 2.0 m were produced. All tests showed evidence of the fourth wave of the GR, namely the expansion wave behind the reflected shock wave. A shocklet terminating the expansion wave was also identified in a few cases mainly for incident wave Mach numbers of approximately 1.20.

A study to determine the general gas dynamic behaviour associated with the impact of a shock wave on a porous wedge has been undertaken. A number of interesting features are noted. The pattern of wave reflection is shown to be significantly affected by the inflow of gas into the wedge. This has the effect of reducing the triple point trajectory angle for cases of Mach reflection and for strongly reducing the reflection angle in regular reflection. The permeability of the wedge has a significant effect on the strength of the reflected wave and in some cases this wave can be attenuated to the extent that it is almost eradicated. Pressure measurements taken under the wedge are characterized by oscillations which are of similar shape, for a given wedge, over a range of shock wave Mach numbers. It is shown that the wave transmitted into the wedge is attenuated to varying degrees depending on the material properties, and that for weak incident waves the mean propagation velocity can be less than the sound speed in the pore fluid. Photographs taken using a specially constructed wedge which allows the transmitted wave to be visualised, show that the transmitted wave is nearly plane. This article was processed using Springer-Verlag TEX Shock Waves macro package 1.0 and the AMS fonts, developed by the American Mathematical Society.

Effects of a Single-pulse Energy Deposition on Steady Shock Wave Reflection
The effects of energy deposition in the free stream on steady regular and Mach shock wave reflections are studied numerically. A short-duration laser pulse is focused upstream of the incident shock waves. It causes formation of the expanding blast wave and the residual hot-spot interacting in a complex way with the steady shock wave reflection. It was found that the laser energy addition in the free stream may force the transition from regular to Mach reflection in the dual solution domain. In contrast to previously reported numerical results, the transition from Mach to regular reflection has not been reproduced in our refined computations since the Mach reflection is restored after the flow perturbation.

A study is made of the transition from regular reflection to Mach reflection when a plane moderately strong or weak shock wave interacts with a wall in a two-phase gas—liquid medium. An equilibrium model that differs from the model of Parkin et al. [1] by the introduction of the adiabatic velocity of sound is used to investigate shock wave reflection in the complete range of gas concentrations. For the reflection of weak shock waves, nonlinear asymptotic expansions [2] are used. In the limiting cases, the results agree with those already known for single-phase media [2, 3].Translated from Izvestiya Akademii Nauk SSSR, Mekhanika Zhidkosti i Gaza, No. 5, pp. 190–192, September–October, 1983.

In order to examine the transition between regular and Mach reflection in a three-dimensional flow, a range of special geometry test pieces, and inlets, were designed. The concept is to have a geometry consisting of two plane wedges which results in regular reflection between the incident waves off the top and bottom of the inlet capped by two curved end sections causing Mach reflection. The merging of these two reflection patterns and the resulting downstream flow are studied using laser vapor screen and shadowgraph imaging supported by numerical simulation. An angled Mach disc is formed which merges with the line of regular reflection. A complex wave pattern results with the generation of a bridging shock connecting the reflected wave from the Mach reflection with the reflected waves from the regular reflection. In order to experimentally access the flow within the duct, a number of tests were conducted with one end cap removed. This resulted in a modified flow due to the expansive flow at the open end the influence of which was also studied in more detail.

Abstract. This paper reports on the characteristics of a compact vertical diaphragmless shock tube, which was constructed and tested in the Shock Wave Research Center to study experimentally the behavior of toroidal shock waves. It is 1.15 m in height and has a self-sustained co-axial vertical structure consisting of a 100 mm i.d. outer tube and an 80 mm o.d. inner tube. To create a ring shaped shock wave between the inner and outer tubes, a rubber sheet is inserted to separate a high pressure driver gas from a test gas, which is bulged with auxiliary high pressure helium from the behind. When the rubber membrane is contracted by the sudden release of the auxiliary gas so as to break the seal, shock waves are formed. Special design features of the shock tube are described and their role in producing repeatable shock waves is discussed. Its special opening characteristics make possible the production of annular shaped shock waves that are unlikely met with a conventional tube that uses rupturing diaphragms. Performance of the shock tube is evaluated in terms of the shock wave Mach numbers and the measured flow properties. It eventually showed a higher degree of repeatability and the scatter in the shock wave Mach numbers Ms was found to be 0.2% for Ms ranging from 1.1 to 1.8. The shock wave Mach number so far measured agreed very well with the simple shock tube theory.

The various oblique shock wave reflection patterns generated by a moving incident shock on a planar wedge using an ideal quantum gas model are numerically studied using a novel high resolution quantum kinetic flux splitting scheme. With different incident shock Mach numbers and wedge angles as flow parameters, four different types of reflection patterns, namely, the regular reflection, simple Mach reflection, complex Mach reflection and the double Mach reflection as in the classical gas can be classified and observed. Both Bose–Einstein and Fermi–Dirac gases are considered.

A similarity law, which follows from the equations of short waves, describing the motion of a gas with the reflection of a shock wave of small amplitude from a rigid wedge, is formulated. To determine the limits of the applicability of this law, the results of an analysis of the Mach reflection of shock waves of moderate intensity are given. In the calculations, a constant aperture angle of the wedge and a critical angle of incidence of the waves were assumed, and a change in the ratio of the specific heat capacities was accompanied by a variation of the relative excess pressure in the oncoming flow. With such an approach, data obtained for one gas can be used for modelling phenomena in another.Translated from Izvestiya Akademii Nauk SSSR, Mekhanika Zhidkosti i Gaza, No. 3, pp. 116–123, May–June, 1977.

An experimental and numerical study was made of converging cylindrical shock waves. The goal of the present study was to clarify the movement and instability of the converging cylindrical shock waves. Experiments were conducted in an annular shock tube of 230 mm o.d. and 210 mm i.d. connected to a cylindrical test section of 210 mm diameter. Double exposure holographic interferometry was used to visualize the converging cylindrical shock waves. Incident shock Mach numbers ranged between 1.1 and 2.0 in air. A numerical simulation was conducted using the TVD finite difference scheme. It was found in the experiments that although the initial shock wave configuration looked cylindrical, it was gradually deformed with propagation towards the center and finally showed mode-four instability. This is attributable to the existence of initial disturbances which were introduced by the struts which supported the inner tube of the annular shock tube. This trend was significant for stronger shock waves indicating that at the last stage of shock wave convergence the initial perturbations of the converging cylindrical shock wave were amplified to form the triple point of Mach reflection. The numerical results correctly predicted the experimental trend. This article was processed using Springer-Verlag TEX Shock Waves macro package 1990.

The Mach reflection of cellular detonation waves on a wedge is investigated numerically in an attempt to elucidate the effect of cellular instabilities on Mach reflection, the dependence of self-similarity on the thickness of a detonation wave, and the initial development of the Mach stem near the wedge apex. A two-step chain-branching reaction model is used to give a thermally neutral induction zone followed by a chemical reaction zone for the detonation wave. A sufficiently large distance of travel of the Mach stem is computed to observe the asymptotic behavior in the far field. Depending on the scale at which the Mach reflection process occurs, it is found that the Mach reflection of a cellular detonation behaves essentially in the same way as a planar ZND detonation wave. The cellular instabilities, however, cause the triple-point trajectory to fluctuate. The fluctuations are due to interactions of the triple point of the Mach stem with the transverse waves of cellular instabilities. In the vicinity of the wedge apex, the Mach reflection is found to be self-similar and corresponds to that of a shock wave of the same strength, since the Mach stem is highly overdriven initially. In the far field, the triple-point trajectory approaches a straight line, indicating that the Mach reflection becomes self-similar asymptotically. The distance of the approach to self-similarity is found to decrease rapidly with decreasing thickness of the detonation front.

Numerical calculations based on the Navier-Stokes equations are carried out to investigate the reflection of shock waves over straight reflecting surfaces in steady flows. The results for a flow Mach number of M0=4.96 confirm the recent experimental findings of Chpoun et al. (1995) concerning the transition from regular to Mach reflection. Numerical calculations as well as experimental results show a hysteresis phenomenon during this transition and the regular reflection is found to be stable in the dual-solution domain in which theoretically both regular and Mach reflection wave configurations are possible.

New numerical and experimental results on the transition between regular and Mach reflections of steady shock waves are presented. The influence of flow three-dimensionality on transition between steady regular and Mach reflection has been studied in detail both numerically and experimentally. Characteristic features of 3D shock wave configuration, such as peripheral Mach reflection, non-monotonous Mach stem variation in transverse direction, the existence of combined Mach-regular-peripheral Mach shock wave configuration, have been found in the numerical simulations. The application of laser sheet imaging technique in streamwise direction allowed us to confirm all the details of shock wave configuration in the experiments. Close agreement of the numerical and experimental data on Mach stem heights is shown.

The scientific investigation of the nature of shock waves started 130 years ago with the advent of the schlieren method which was developed in the period 1859–1864 by August Toepler. At the very beginning applied to the visualization of heat and flow phenomena, he immediately turned to air shock waves generated by electric sparks, andsubjectively studied the propagation, reflection and refraction of shock waves. His new delay circuit in the microsecond time regime for the first time made it possible to vary electrically the delay time between a spark generating a shock wave and a second spark acting as a flash light source in his chlieren setup. In 1870 Toepler, together with Boltzmann, applied Jamin's interferometric refractometer and extended the visualization to very weak sound waves at the threshold of hearing. Toepler's pioneering schlieren method stimulated Ernst Mach and his team toobjectively investigate the nature of shock waves: they improved Toepler's time delay circuit; continued the study on the reflection of shock waves; introduced shadowgraphy as a modification of the schlieren method; photographed the propagation of shock waves generated by an electric spark and by supersonic projectiles, and improved interferometry. Based on a large number of original documents the paper illuminates the concomitant circumstances of the invention of the schlieren method and its first applications by others. Although the schlieren method is only one of the many methods I had to use, it is a very important one, and I believe that you will enjoy the results as much as I do.

A numerical simulation was performed for the process of formation of single Mach reflection on a wedge by solving a BGK type kinetic equation for the reduced distribution function with a finite difference scheme. The calculations were carried out for a shock Mach number 2.75 and wedge angle 25° in a monatomic gas, which corresponds to the conditions of single Mach reflection in the classical von Neumann theory. The calculations were performed for both diffuse and specular reflection of molecules at the wall surface. It is concluded that the diffuse reflection of molecules at the wall surface or the existence of the viscous or thermal layer is an essential factor for a nonstationary process at the initial stage of Mach reflection. Furthermore, the numerical results for diffuse reflection are found to simulate the experimental results very well, such as a transient process from regular reflection to Mach reflection along with shock propagation. This article was processed using Springer-Verlag TEX Shock Waves macro package 1990.
