Adsorption of hydrogen chloride (HCl) on water ice films is studied in the temperature range of 100-140 K by using Cs+ reactive ion scattering (Cs+ RIS), low energy sputtering (LES), and temperature-programmed-desorption mass spectrometry (TPDMS). At 100 K, HCl on ice partially dissociates to hydronium and chloride ions and the undissociated HCl exists in two distinct molecular states (alpha- and beta-states). Upon heating of the ice films, HCl molecules in the alpha-state desorb at 135-150 K, whereas those in the beta-state first become ionized and then desorb via recombinative reaction of ions at 170 K. An adsorption kinetics study reveals that HCl adsorption into the ionized state is slightly favored over adsorption into the molecular states at 100 K, leading to earlier saturation of the ionized state. Between the two molecular states, the beta-state is formed first, and the alpha-state appears only at high HCl coverage. At 140 K, ionic dissociation of HCl is completed. The resulting hydronium ion can migrate into the underlying sublayer to a depth <4 bilayers, suggesting that the migration is assisted by self-diffusion of water molecules near the surface. When HCl is covered by a water overlayer at 100 K, its ionization efficiency is enhanced, but a substantial portion of HCl remains undissociated as molecules or contact ion pairs. The observation suggests that three-dimensional surrounding by water molecules does not guarantee ionic dissociation of HCl. Complete ionization of HCl requires additional thermal energy to separate the hydronium and chloride ions.  相似文献

We analyze the short-time dynamics of 'cyclic' and 'branched' water tetramers after an ionization event, with the aid of a scheme that partitions the kinetic energy of a solute plus solvent system into separate solute and solvent (or bath) contributions, using instantaneous internal coordinates and atomic velocities. The analysis supports the partitioning of the tetrameric systems into two subsystems, a 'reactive trimer' and a 'solvent' molecule. The partitioned kinetic energy exhibits two features, a broad peak assigned to the interaction between the two sub-systems and a sharper peak arising from the proton transfer that occurs upon ionization. It is found that the stability of the hydroxyl radical formed upon ionization is sensitive to the configuration of the water molecules around the ionized water at the moment of the ionization event.  相似文献

Despite utmost importance in understanding water ionization process, reliable theoretical results of structural changes and molecular dynamics (MD) of water clusters on ionization have hardly been reported yet. Here, we investigate the water cations [(H2O)n = 2–6+] with density functional theory (DFT), Möller–Plesset second‐order perturbation theory (MP2), and coupled cluster theory with single, double, and perturbative triple excitations [CCSD(T)]. The complete basis set limits of interaction energies at the CCSD(T) level are reported, and the geometrical structures, electronic properties, and infrared spectra are investigated. The characteristics of structures and spectra of the water cluster cations reflect the formation of the hydronium cation moiety (H3O+) and the hydroxyl radical. Although most density functionals fail to predict reasonable energetics of the water cations, some functionals are found to be reliable, in reasonable agreement with high‐level ab initio results. To understand the ionization process of water clusters, DFT‐ and MP2‐based Born‐Oppenheimer MD (BOMD) simulations are performed on ionization. On ionization, the water clusters tend to have an Eigen‐like form with the hydronium cation instead of a Zundel‐like form, based on reliable BOMD simulations. For the vertically ionized water hexamer, the relatively stable (H2O)5+ (5sL4A) cluster tends to form with a detached water molecule (H2O). © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.  相似文献

In molecular beams, the tertiary amine N,N-dimethylisopropyl amine can form molecular clusters that are evident in photoelectron and mass spectra obtained upon resonant multiphoton ionization via the 3p and 3s Rydberg states. By delaying the ionization pulse from the excitation pulse we follow, in time, the ultrafast energy relaxation dynamics of the 3p to 3s internal conversion and the ensuing cluster evaporation, proton transfer, and structural dynamics. While evaporation of the cluster occurs in the 3s Rydberg state, proton transfer dominates on the ion surface. The mass-spectrum shows protonated species that arise from a proton transfer from the alpha-carbon of the neutral parent molecule to the N-atom of its ionized partner in the dimer. DFT calculations support the proton transfer mechanism between tightly bonded cluster components. The photoelectron spectrum shows broad peaks, ascribed to molecular clusters, which have an instantaneous shift of about 0.5 eV toward lower binding energies. That shift is attributed to the charge redistribution associated with the induced dipoles in surrounding cluster molecules. A time-dependent shift that decreases the Rydberg electron binding energy by a further 0.4 eV arises from the structural reorganization of the cluster solvent molecules as they react to the sudden creation of a charge.  相似文献

The proton affinity of water dimer was measured, using the kinetic method with nitrile reference bases, to be 808 +/- 6 kJ mol(-1). The difference between the measured value and the proton affinity of a single water molecule (690 +/- 4 kJ mol(-1)) reflects the difference in solvation energy for two neutral water molecules (the hydrogen bond energy of water dimer), and the energy for solvation of hydronium cation and water. Using the measured proton affinity of the dimer along with ancillary data yields an experimental value of the hydrogen bond energy of neutral water dimer, 18 +/- 9 kJ mol(-1), in good agreement with previous experimental and theoretical values. The proton affinity of the dimer measured by using alcohol references is ca 100 kJ mol(-1) too low, likely because the structure of the protonated cluster is not well-suited for kinetic method measurements. These results highlight the importance of choosing reference bases that form cluster ions consisting of a proton bound complex between the water dimer and the reference base.  相似文献

A generalized Kohn-Sham (GKS) approach to density functional theory (DFT), based on the Baer-Neuhauser-Livshits range-separated hybrid, combined with ab initio motivated range-parameter tuning is used to study properties of water dimer and pentamer cations. The water dimer is first used as a benchmark system to check the approach. The present brand of DFT localizes the positive charge (hole), stabilizing the proton transferred geometry in agreement with recent coupled-cluster calculations. Relative energies of various conformers of the water dimer cation compare well with previously published coupled cluster results. The GKS orbital energies are good approximations to the experimental ionization potentials of the system. Low-lying excitation energies calculated from time-dependent DFT based on the present method compare well with recently published high-level "equation of motion-coupled-cluster" calculations. The harmonic frequencies of the water dimer cation are in good agreement with experimental and wave function calculations where available. The method is applied to study the water pentamer cation. Three conformers are identified: two are Eigen type and one is a Zundel type. The structure and harmonic vibrational structure are analyzed. The ionization dynamics of a pentamer water cluster at 0 K shows a fast <50 fs transient for transferring a proton from one of the water molecules, releasing a hydroxyl radical and creating a protonated tetramer carrying the excess hole.  相似文献

Femtosecond (fs) lasers have high intensity and ultrashort pulse duration. Tunneling ionization occurs for molecules subject to such intense laser fields. We have studied the mass spectra of a variety of molecules irradiated by intense fs laser pulses. These molecules include some typical volatile organic compounds contained in human breath and in the atmosphere. The results demonstrate that all of these molecules can be ionized by intense fs laser pulses. Dominant parent ion and some characteristic ionic fragments are observed for each molecule. The degree of fragmentation can be controlled by adjusting the laser intensity. Moreover, saturation ionization can occur for each molecule by increasing the laser intensity. These features indicate that fs laser mass spectrometry can be a sensitive tool to identify and quantify volatile organic compounds in human breath.  相似文献

Molecular dynamics simulations on quantum energy surfaces are carried out to study the effects of perturbing electric fields on proton transport (PT) in protonated water chains. As an idealized model of a hydrophobic cavity in the interior of a protein the water molecules are confined into a carbon nanotube (CNT). The water chain connects a hydrated hydronium ion (H3O+) at one end of the CNT and an imidazole molecule at the other end. Without perturbing electric fields PT from the hydronium proton donor to the imidazole acceptor occurs on a picosecond time scale. External perturbations to PT are created by electric fields of varying intensities, normal to the CNT axis, generated by a neutral pair of charges on the nanotube wall. For fields above approximately 0.5 VA, the hydronium ion is effectively trapped at the CNT center, and PT blocked. Fields of comparable strength are generated inside proteins by nearby polar/charged amino acids. At lower fields the system displays a rich dynamic behavior, where the excess charge shuttles back and forth along the water chain before reaching the acceptor group on the picosecond time scale. The effects of the perturbing field on the proton movement are analyzed in terms of structural and dynamic properties of the water chain. The implications of these observations on PT in biomolecular systems and its control by external perturbing fields are discussed.  相似文献

The dynamics of the light initiated OH-overtone induced elimination reactions CH(2)FOH.(H(2)O)(n) + hnu--> HF + CH(2)O + n(H(2)O), n = 1-3, are studied using classical trajectory simulations where the ab initio potential energy surface is computed "on-the-fly". Hydrogen bonding to the water is found to lower the barrier to reaction by over 20 kcal mol(-1) and modifies the mechanism to a concerted multiple H-atom transfer process. The reaction process is found to occur on a rapid timescale, <100 fs, and involves the hydronium ion as an intermediate. An essential aspect of dynamics is the successful competition of reaction with energy dissipation through water evaporation from the cluster.  相似文献

Dynamics of glycine chemisorbed on the surface of a silicon cluster is studied for a process that involves single-photon ionization, followed by recombination with the electron after a selected time delay. The process is studied by "on-the-fly" molecular dynamics simulations, using the semiempirical parametric method number 3 (PM3) potential energy surface. The system is taken to be in the ground state prior to photoionization, and time delays from 5 to 50 fs before the recombination are considered. The time evolution is computed over 10 ps. The main findings are (1) the positive charge after ionization is initially mostly distributed on the silicon cluster. (2) After ionization the major structural changes are on the silicon cluster. These include Si-Si bond breaking and formation and hydrogen transfer between different silicon atoms. (3) The transient ionization event gives rise to dynamical behavior that depends sensitively on the ion state lifetime. Subsequent to 45 fs evolution in the charged state, the glycine molecule starts to rotate on the silicon cluster. Implications of the results to various processes that are induced by transient transition to a charged state are discussed. These include inelastic tunneling in molecular devices, photochemistry on conducting surfaces, and electron-molecule scattering.  相似文献

A supersonic beam of organic molecules (benzonitrile (Bn), toluene (Tol), benzene (Bz) and pyridine (Pyr)) seeded into Ne or Ar was ionized by VUV radiation from the Berlin electron storage ring (BESSY). Photoionization efficiency curves were measured for Bn, Bn·Ne, Bn·Ar, Tol, Tol·Ar, Tol·Ne, Bz, Pyr, Pyr-Ar, and Pyr-Ne. Resonance peaks in these spectra at the positions of the atomic rare gas resonance lines confirm our previous measurements on Bn seeded into Ar and Kr, showing that the excitation energy of the rare gas atom is transferred to the attached organic molecule within a heterogeneous cluster, leading to ionization of the molecule and fragmentation of the cluster.  相似文献

The valence ionization and double ionization spectra of the water molecule, of the water dimer, and the cyclic water clusters (H2O)3 and (H2O)4 are calculated by ab initio Green's function methods and discussed in some detail. Particular attention is paid to the analysis of the development of the spectra with increasing cluster size. Electronic decay following inner valence ionization is addressed and a crude estimate for the kinetic energy spectrum of the secondary electrons is given for the clusters.  相似文献

The photolysis of (H(2)O)(n) nanoparticles of various mean sizes between 85 and 670 has been studied in a molecular beam experiment. At the dissociation wavelength 243 nm (5.10 eV), a two-photon absorption leads to H-atom production. The measured kinetic energy distributions of H-fragments exhibit a peak of slow fragments below 0.4 eV with maximum at approximately 0.05 eV, and a tail of faster fragments extending to 1.5 eV. The dependence on the cluster size suggests that the former fragments originate from the photodissociation of an H(2)O molecule in the cluster interior leading to the H-fragment caging and eventually generation of a hydronium H(3)O molecule. The photolysis of surface molecules yields the faster fragments. At 193 nm (6.42 eV) a single photon process leads to a small signal from molecules directly photolyzed on the cluster surface. The two photon processes at this wavelength may lead to cluster ionization competing with its photodissociation, as suggested by the lack of H-fragment signal increase. The experimental findings are complemented by theoretical calculations.  相似文献

An explanation for the superior proton conductivity of low equivalent weight (EW) short-side-chain (SSC) perfluorosulfonic acid membranes is pursued through the determination of hydrated morphology and hydronium ion diffusion coefficients using classical molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. A unique force field set for the SSC ionomer was derived from torsion profiles determined from ab initio electronic structure calculations of an oligomeric fragment consisting of two side chains. MD simulations were performed on a system consisting of a single macromolecule of the polymer (EW of 580) with the general formula F3C-[CF(OCF2CF2SO3H)-(CF2)7]40-CF3 at hydration levels corresponding to 3, 6, and 13 water molecules per sulfonic acid group. Examination of the hydrated morphology indicates the formation of hydrogen bond "bridges" between distant sulfonate groups without significant bending of the polytetrafluoroethylene backbone. Pair correlation functions of the system identify the presence of ion cages consisting of hydronium ions hydrogen-bonded to three sulfonate groups at the lowest water content. Such structures exhibit very low S-OH3+ separations, well below 4 A and severely inhibit vehicular diffusion of the protons. The number of sulfonate groups in the first solvation shell of a given hydronium ion correlates well with the differences between Nafion and the SSC polymer (Hyflon). The calculated hydronium ion diffusion coefficients of 2.84 x 10-7, 1.36 x 10-6, and 3.47 x 10-6 cm2/s for water contents of 3, 6, and 13, respectively, show only good agreement to experimentally measured values at the lowest water content, underscoring the increasing contribution of proton shuttling or hopping at the higher hydration levels. At the highest water content, the vehicular diffusion accounts for only about 1/5 of the total proton transport similar to that observed in Nafion.  相似文献

We explore electron dynamics in molecular (CD4)(1061) clusters and elemental Xen (n=249-2171) clusters, responding to ultraintense (intensity I=10(16)-10(19) W cm(-2)) laser fields. Molecular dynamics simulations (including magnetic field and relativistic effects) and analyses of high-energy electron dynamics and nuclear ion dynamics in a cluster interacting with a Gaussian shaped laser field (frequency 0.35 fs(-1), photon energy 1.44 eV, phase 0, temporal width 25 fs) elucidated the time dependence of inner ionization, the formation of a nanoplasma of unbound electrons within the cluster or its vicinity, and of outer ionization. We determined the cluster size and the laser intensity dependence of these three sequential-parallel electronic processes. The characteristic times for cluster inner ionization (tau(ii)) and for outer ionization (tau(oi)) fall in the femtosecond time domain, i.e., tau(ii)=2-9 fs and tau(oi)=4-15 fs for (CD4)(1061), tau(ii)=7-30 fs and tau(oi)=5-13 fs for Xe(n) (n=479,1061), with both tau(ii) and tau(oi) decreasing with increasing I, in accord with the barrier suppression ionization mechanism for inner ionization of the constituents and the cluster barrier suppression ionization mechanism for outer ionization. The positive delay times Deltatau(OI) between outer and inner ionization (e.g., Deltatau(OI)=6.5 fs for Xen at I=10(16) W cm(-2) and Deltatau(OI)=0.2 fs for (CD4)(1061) at I=10(19) W cm(-2)) demonstrate that the outer/inner ionization processes are sequential. For (CD4)(1061), tau(ii)tau(oi), reflecting on the energetic hierarchy in the ionization of the Xe atoms. Quasiresonance contributions to the outer ionization of the nanoplasma were established, as manifested in the temporal oscillations in the inner/outer ionization levels, and in the center of mass of the nanoplasma electrons. The formation characteristics, dynamics, and response of the nanoplasma in molecular or elemental clusters were addressed. The nanoplasma is positively charged, with a high-average electron density [rho(P)=(2-3)10(22) cm(-3)], being characterized by high-average electron energies epsilon(av) (e.g., in Xe(1061) clusters epsilon(av)=54 eV at I=10(16) W cm(-2) and epsilon(av)=0.56-0.37 keV at I=10(18) W cm(-2), with epsilon(av) proportional, variant I(1/2)). Beyond the cluster boundary the average electron energy markedly increases, reaching electron energies in the range of 1.2-40 keV for outer ionization of Xe(n) (n=249-2171) clusters. The nanoplasma exhibits spatial inhomogeneity and angular anisotropy induced by the laser field. Femtosecond time scales are predicted for the nanoplasma production (rise times 7-3 fs), for the decay (decay times approximately 5 fs), and for the persistence time (30-10 fs) of a transient nanoplasma at I=10(17)-10(18) W cm(-2). At lower intensities of I=10(16) W cm(-2) a persistent nanoplasma with a "long" lifetime of > 50 fs will prevail.  相似文献

Electrospray ionization (ESI) is the most common ionization method in atmospheric pressure ionization mass spectrometry because of its easy use and handling and because a diverse range of components can be effectively ionized from high to medium polarity. Usually, ESI is not employed for the analysis of non‐polar hydrocarbons, but under some circumstances, they are effectively ionized. Polyaromatic hydrocarbons and aromatic heterocycles can form radical ions and protonated molecules after ESI, which were detected by Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry. The highly condensed aromatic structures are obtained from a heavy crude oil, and the results show class distribution from pure hydrocarbons up to more non‐basic nitrogen‐containing species. By using different solvent compositions [toluene/methanol (50/50 v/v), dichloromethane/methanol (50/50 v/v), dichloromethane/acetonitrile (50/50 v/v) and chloroform], the results show that the lack of proton donor agent helps to preserve the radical formation that was created at the metal/solution interface inside the electrospray capillary. The results demonstrate that with an appropriate selection of solvent and capillary voltage, the ratio between the detected radical ion and protonated molecule form can be manipulated. Therefore, ESI can be expanded for the investigation of asphaltene and other polyaromatic systems beyond the polar constituents as non‐polar hydrocarbons can be efficiently analyzed. Conditional and time-dependent radial distribution functions reveal the details of the water structure surrounding the hydronium during the proton mobility process. Using this methodology for classical multistate empirical valence bond (MS-EVB) and ab initio molecular dynamics trajectories, as well as quantal MS-EVB trajectories, we supply statistical proof that proton hops in liquid water occur by a transition from the H3O+[3H2O] Eigen-complex, via the H5O2+ Zundel-complex, to a H3O+[3H2O] centered on a neighboring water molecule. In the "resting period" before a transition, there is a distorted hydronium with one of its water ligands at a shorter distance and another at a longer distance than average. The identity of this "special partner" interchanges rapidly within the three first-shell water ligands. This is coupled to cleavage of an acceptor-type hydrogen bond. Just before the transition, a partner is selected by an additional translation of the H3O+ moiety in its direction, possibly enabled by loosening of donor-type hydrogen bonds on the opposite side. We monitor the transition in real time, showing how the average structure is converted to a distorted H5O2+ cation constituting the transitional complex for proton hopping between water molecules.  相似文献

The early stages of the Coulomb explosion of a doubly ionized water molecule immersed in liquid water are investigated with time‐dependent density functional theory molecular dynamics (TD–DFT MD) simulations. Our aim is to verify that the double ionization of one target water molecule leads to the formation of atomic oxygen as a direct consequence of the Coulomb explosion of the molecule. To that end, we used TD–DFT MD simulations in which effective molecular orbitals are propagated in time. These molecular orbitals are constructed as a unitary transformation of maximally localized Wannier orbitals, and the ionization process was obtained by removing two electrons from the molecular orbitals with symmetry 1B1, 3A1, 1B2 and 2A1 in turn. We show that the doubly charged H2O2+ molecule explodes into its three atomic fragments in less than 4 fs, which leads to the formation of one isolated oxygen atom whatever the ionized molecular orbital. This process is followed by the ultrafast transfer of an electron to the ionized molecule in the first femtosecond. A faster dissociation pattern can be observed when the electrons are removed from the molecular orbitals of the innermost shell. A Bader analysis of the charges carried by the molecules during the dissociation trajectories is also reported.  相似文献

Proton transfer (pT) reactions in biochemical processes are often mediated by chains of hydrogen-bonded water molecules. We use hybrid density functional calculations to study pT along quasi one-dimensional water arrays that connect an imidazolium-imidazole proton donor-acceptor pair. We characterize the structures of intermediates and transition states, the energetics, and the dynamics of the pT reactions, including vibrational contributions to kinetic isotope effects. In molecular dynamics simulations of pT transition paths, we find that for short water chains with four water molecules, the pT reactions are semi-concerted. The formation of a high-energy hydronium intermediate next to the proton-donating group is avoided by a simultaneous transfer of a proton from the donor to the first water molecule, and from the first water molecule into the water chain. Lowering the dielectric constant of the environment and increasing the water chain length both reduce the barrier for pT. We study the effect of the driving force on the energetics of the pT reaction by changing the proton affinity of the donor and acceptor groups through halogen and methyl substitutions. We find that the barrier of the pT reaction depends linearly on the proton affinity of the donor but is nearly independent of the proton affinity of the acceptor, corresponding to Br?nsted slopes of one and zero, respectively.  相似文献

Electron attachment dynamics of excess electron in water cluster (H2O)n (n = 2 and 3) have been investigated by means of full-dimensional direct ab initio molecular dynamics (MD) method at the MP26-311++G(d,p) level. It was found that the hydrogen bond breaking due to the excess electron is an important process in the first stage of electron capture in water trimer. Time scale of electron localization and hydrogen bond breaking were determined by the direct ab initio MD simulation. The initial process of hydration in water cluster is clearly visualized in the present study. In n = 3, an excess electron is first trapped around the cyclic water trimer with a triangular form, where the excess electron is equivalently distributed on the three water molecules at time zero. After 50 fs, the excess electron is concentrated into two water molecules, while the potential energy of the system decreases by -1.5 kcal/mol from the vertical point. After 100 fs, the excess electron is localized in one of the water molecules and the potential energy decreases by -5.3 kcal/mol, but the triangular form still remained. After that, one of the hydrogen bonds in the triangular form is gradually broken by the excess electron, while the structure becomes linear at 100-300 fs after electron capture. The time scale of hydrogen bond breaking due to the excess electron is calculated to be about 300 fs. Finally, a dipole bound state is formed by the linear form of three water molecules. In the case of n = 2, the dipole bound anion is formed directly. The mechanism of electron hydration dynamics was discussed on the basis of theoretical results.  相似文献
