A description of Hilbert -modules in which all closed submodules are orthogonally closed

On the range and the kernel of the operator

Let denote the algebra of (bounded linear) operators on the separable complex Hilbert space , and let denote a norm ideal in . For , let the derivation be defined by , and let be defined by . The main result of this paper is to show that if , are contractions, then for every operator such that , then for all .

     

Helly-type theorems for hollow axis-aligned boxes

A hollow axis-aligned box is the boundary of the cartesian product of compact intervals in . We show that for , if any of a collection of hollow axis-aligned boxes have non-empty intersection, then the whole collection has non-empty intersection; and if any of a collection of hollow axis-aligned rectangles in have non-empty intersection, then the whole collection has non-empty intersection. The values for and for are the best possible in general. We also characterize the collections of hollow boxes which would be counterexamples if were lowered to , and to , respectively.

     

On sums and products of integers

Erdös and Szemerédi proved that if is a set of positive integers, then there must be at least integers that can be written as the sum or product of two elements of , where is a constant and . Nathanson proved that the result holds for . In this paper it is proved that the result holds for and .

     

Irreducible plane curves with the Albanese dimension 2

Let be a plane curve given by an equation , and let be the affine plane curve given by . Let denote a cyclic covering of determined by . The number is called the Albanese dimension of . In this article, we shall give examples of with the Albanese dimension 2.

     

Uniform distribution modulo one on subsequences

Let be a set of primes with a divergent series of reciprocals and let denote the set of squarefree integers greater than one that are divisible only by primes in . G. Myerson and A. D. Pollington proved that is uniformly distributed (mod 1) whenever the subsequence is uniformly distributed (mod 1) for every in . We show that in fact is uniformly distributed (mod 1) whenever the subsequence is uniformly distributed (mod 1) for every .

     

On covering multiplicity

Let be a system of arithmetic sequences which forms an -cover of (i.e. every integer belongs at least to members of ). In this paper we show the following surprising properties of : (a) For each there exist at least subsets of with such that . On the product of two generalized derivations

Two elements and in a ring determine a generalized derivation on by setting for any in . We characterize when the product is a generalized derivation in the cases when the ring is the algebra of all bounded operators on a Banach space , and when is a -algebra . We use these characterizations to compute the commutant of the range of .

     

The Wiener transform on the Besicovitch spaces

In his fundamental research on generalized harmonic analysis, Wiener proved that the integrated Fourier transform defined by is an isometry from a nonlinear space of functions of bounded average quadratic power into a nonlinear space of functions of bounded quadratic variation. We consider this Wiener transform on the larger, linear, Besicovitch spaces defined by the norm . We prove that maps continuously into the homogeneous Besov space for and , and is a topological isomorphism when .

     

A sharp exponential inequality for Lorentz-Sobolev spaces on bounded domains

This paper generalizes an inequality of Moser from the case that is in the Lebesgue space to certain subspaces, namely the Lorentz spaces , where . The conclusion is that is integrable, where . This is a higher degree of integrability than in the Moser inequality when . A formula for is given and it is also shown that no larger value of works.

     

Matrix presentations of braids and applications

We show that there exists a one-to-one correspondence between the class of certain block tridiagonal matrices with the entries or and the free monoid generated by generators and relation and give some applications for braids. In particular, we give new formulation of the reduced Alexander matrices for closed braids.

     

On permutation representations of polyhedral groups

We answer affirmatively the following question of Derek Holt: Given integers , can one, in a simple manner, find a finite set and permutations such that has order , has order and has order ? The method of proof enables us to prove more general results (Theorems 2 and 3).

     

On the excess of sets of complex exponentials

Relative Brauer groups of discrete valued fields

Let be a non-trivial finite Galois extension of a field . In this paper we investigate the role that valuation-theoretic properties of play in determining the non-triviality of the relative Brauer group, , of over . In particular, we show that when is finitely generated of transcendence degree 1 over a -adic field and is a prime dividing , then the following conditions are equivalent: (i) the -primary component, , is non-trivial, (ii) is infinite, and (iii) there exists a valuation of trivial on such that divides the order of the decomposition group of at .

     

Cyclic torsion of elliptic curves

Let be an elliptic curve over a number field such that

We show that is isogenous to such that . In case has complex multiplication and , we obtain certain criteria whether or not is isogenous to such that .

     

The maximal ideal space of with respect to the Hadamard product

Completeness of eigenvectors of group representations of operators whose Arveson spectrum is scattered

We establish the following result.

Theorem. Let be a integrable bounded group representation whose Arveson spectrum is scattered. Then the subspace generated by all eigenvectors of the dual representation is dense in Moreover, the closed subalgebra generated by the operators () is semisimple.

If, in addition, does not contain any copy of then the subspace spanned by all eigenvectors of is dense in Hence, the representation is almost periodic whenever it is strongly continuous.

     

Relative modular theory for a weight

We consider the balanced weight of a semi-finite weight and a (not necessarily faithful) normal positive functional on a von Neumann algebra , and discuss how the modular operator and the modular conjugation are described under the identification of the standard Hilbert space with , where is the support projection of and .

     

Smith equivalence of representations for finite perfect groups

Using smooth one-fixed-point actions on spheres and a result due to Bob Oliver on the tangent representations at fixed points for smooth group actions on disks, we obtain a similar result for perfect group actions on spheres. For a finite group , we compute a certain subgroup of the representation ring . This allows us to prove that a finite perfect group has a smooth -proper action on a sphere with isolated fixed points at which the tangent representations of are mutually nonisomorphic if and only if contains two or more real conjugacy classes of elements not of prime power order. Moreover, by reducing group theoretical computations to number theory, for an integer and primes , we prove similar results for the group , , or . In particular, has Smith equivalent representations that are not isomorphic if and only if , , .

     

The groups of quasiconformal homeomorphisms on Riemann surfaces

Suppose is a connected Riemann surface. Let denote the homeomorphism group of with the compact-open topology, and denote the subgroup of quasiconformal mappings of onto itself, and let and denote the identity components of and respectively. In this paper we show that the pair is an -manifold, and determine their topological types.
