A Banach space X possesses the PC (point of continuity) property if for any w-closed bounded subset A ? X the identity map (A,w)→(A, ∥ ? ∥) has a point of continuity (w is the weak topology in X). We deduce some criteria for Banach spaces to have the PC property and describe (for dual Banach spaces) relationships between spaces possessing the PC property and spaces possessing the RN or the WRN property.

We consider a Gelfand-Phillips type property for the weak topology. The main results that we obtain are (1) for certain Banach spaces, E?? F inherits this property from E and F, and (2) the spaces Lp(μ, E) have this property when E does. A subset A of a Banach space E is a limited set if every (bounded linear) operator T:E → c0 maps A onto a relatively compact subset of c0. The Banach space E has the Gelfand-Phillips property if every limited set is relatively compact. In this note, we study the analogous notions set in the weak topology. Thus we say that A ? E is a Grothendieck set if every T: E → c0 maps A onto a relatively weakly compact set; and E is said to have the weak type GP property if every Grothendieck set in E is relatively weakly compact. In the papers [3, 4 and 6], it is shown among other results that the ?-tensor product E and the spaces Lp(μ, E) inherit the Gelfand-Phillips property from E and F. In this paper, we study the same questions for the weak type GP property. It is easily verified that continuous linear images of Grothendieck sets are Grothendieck and that the weak type GP property is inherited by subspaces. Among the spaces with the weak type GP property one easily finds the separable spaces, and more generally, spaces with a weak* sequentially compact dual ball. Also, C(K) spaces where K is (DCSC) are weak type GP (see [3] and the discussion before Corollary 4 below). A Grothendieck space (a Banach space whose unit ball is a Grothendieck set) has the weak type GP if and only if it is reflexive.  相似文献

We introduce and investigate the weak metric approximation property of Banach spaces which is strictly stronger than the approximation property and at least formally weaker than the metric approximation property. Among others, we show that if a Banach space has the approximation property and is 1-complemented in its bidual, then it has the weak metric approximation property. We also study the lifting of the weak metric approximation property from Banach spaces to their dual spaces. This enables us, in particular, to show that the subspace of c0, constructed by Johnson and Schechtman, does not have the weak metric approximation property. In every Hausdorff locally convex space for which there exists a strictly finer topology than its weak topology but with the same bounded sets (like for instance, all infinite dimensional Banach spaces, the space of distributions or the space of analytic functions in an open set , etc.) there is a set A such that 0 is in the weak closure of A but 0 is not in the weak closure of any bounded subset B of A. A consequence of this is that a Banach space X is finite dimensional if, and only if, the following property [P] holds: for each set and each x in the weak closure of A there is a bounded set such that x belongs to the weak closure of B. More generally, a complete locally convex space X satisfies property [P] if, and only if, either X is finite dimensional or linearly topologically isomorphic to . Received: 11 June 2003  相似文献

A Banach space has the weak fixed point property if its dual space has a weak sequentially compact unit ball and the dual space satisfies the weak uniform Kadec-Klee property; and it has the fixed point property if there exists ε>0 such that, for every infinite subset A of the unit sphere of the dual space, A∪(−A) fails to be (2−ε)-separated. In particular, E-convex Banach spaces, a class of spaces that includes the uniformly nonsquare spaces, have the fixed point property.  相似文献

We introduce a new property between the q-concavity and the lower q-estimate of a Banach lattice and we get a general method to construct maximal symmetric sequence spaces that satisfies this new property but fails to be q-concave. In particular this gives examples of spaces with the Orlicz property but without cotype 2.  相似文献

Let F be a Banach space. We establish necessary and sufficient conditions for the Dunford integration operator, from the space of F‐valued Dunford integrable functions to the bidual of F, to belong to a given operator ideal. We also show how this fact can be used to characterize important classes of Banach spaces, such as Banach spaces with the Banach‐Saks property, separable Banach spaces not containing c0, Banach spaces not containing c0 or ?1 and Asplund spaces not containing c0.  相似文献

A compact spaceS is constructed such that, in the dual Banach spaceC(S)*, every weak* convergent sequence is weakly convergent, whileC(S) does not have a subspace isomorphic tol . The construction introduces a weak version of completeness for Boolean algebras, here called the Subsequential Completeness Property. A related construction leads to a counterexample to a conjecture about holomorphic functions on Banach spaces. A compact spaceT is constructed such thatC(T) does not containl but does have a “bounding” subset that is not relatively compact. The first of the examples was presented at the International Conference on Banach spaces, Kent, Ohio, 1979.  相似文献

We introduce an iterative procedure for finding a point in the zero set (a solution to 0 ∈ A(v) and vC) of an inverse-monotone or inverse strongly-monotone operator A on a nonempty closed convex subset C in a uniformly smooth and uniformly convex Banach space. We establish weak convergence results under suitable assumptions.   相似文献

We consider several quantities related to weak sequential completeness of a Banach space and prove some of their properties in general and in L-embedded Banach spaces, improving in particular an inequality of G. Godefroy, N. Kalton and D. Li. We show some examples witnessing natural limits of our positive results, in particular, we construct a separable Banach space X with the Schur property that cannot be renormed to have a certain quantitative form of weak sequential completeness, thus providing a partial answer to a question of G. We introduce the notion of compactly locally reflexive Banach spaces and show that a Banach space X is compactly locally reflexive if and only if for all reflexive Banach spaces Y. We show that X * has the approximation property if and only if X has the approximation property and is compactly locally reflexive. The weak metric approximation property was recently introduced by Lima and Oja. We study two natural weak compact versions of this property. If X is compactly locally reflexive then these two properties coincide. We also show how these properties are related to the compact approximation property and the compact approximation property with conjugate operators for dual spaces.  相似文献

Abstract

Let A be a non-empty bounded subset of a locally convex space E. We show that if all the separable subsets of A are weakly metrisable, then the weak*-compact subsets of E1 satisfy geometrical conditions which are similar to the concept of “dentability” used to characterise the Radon-Nikodý Property in dual Banach spaces.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

We study the random weak ergodic property of infinite products of mappings acting on complete metric spaces. Our results describe an aspect of the asymptotic behaviour of random infinite products of such mappings. More precisely, we show that in appropriate spaces of sequences of operators there exists a subset, which is a countable intersection of open and everywhere dense sets, such that each sequence belonging to this subset has the random weak ergodic property. Then we show that several known results in the literature can be deduced from our general result.  相似文献

A Banach space is said to have the diameter two property if every non-empty relatively weakly open subset of its unit ball has diameter two. We prove that the projective tensor product of two Banach spaces whose centralizer is infinite-dimensional has the diameter two property. The same statement also holds for if the centralizer of X is infinite-dimensional and the unit sphere of Y? contains an element of numerical index one. We provide examples of classical Banach spaces satisfying the assumptions of the results. If K is any infinite compact Hausdorff topological space, then has the diameter two property for any nonzero Banach space Y. We also provide a result on the diameter two property for the injective tensor product.  相似文献

In general, Banach space-valued Riemann integrable functions defined on [0, 1] (equipped with the Lebesgue measure) need not be weakly continuous almost everywhere. A Banach space is said to have the weak Lebesgue property if every Riemann integrable function taking values in it is weakly continuous almost everywhere. In this paper we discuss this property for the Banach space LX^1 of all Bochner integrable functions from [0, 1] to the Banach space X. We show that LX^1 has the weak Lebesgue property whenever X has the Radon-Nikodym property and X* is separable. This generalizes the result by Chonghu Wang and Kang Wan [Rocky Mountain J. Math., 31(2), 697-703 (2001)] that L^1[0, 1] has the weak Lebesgue property.  相似文献

We investigate non-separable Banach spaces whose norm-open sets are countable unions of sets closed in the weak topology and a narrower class of Banach spaces with a network for the norm topology which is σ-discrete in the weak topology. In particular, we answer a question of Arhangel'skii exhibiting various examples of non-separable function spaces C(K) with a σ-discrete network for the pointwise topology and (consistently) we answer some questions of Edgar and Oncina concerning Borel structures and Kadec renormings in Banach spaces.  相似文献

We introduce the notion of quasi-hyperbolic operators and C0-semigroups. Examples include the push-forward operator associated with a quasi-Anosov diffeomorphism or flow. A quasi-hyperbolic operator can be characterised by a simple spectral property or as the restriction of a hyperbolic operator to an invariant subspace. There is a corresponding spectral property for the generator of a C0-semigroup, and it characterises quasi-hyperbolicity on Hilbert spaces but not on other Banach spaces. We exhibit some weaker properties which are implied by the spectral property.  相似文献

Let X be a Banach space. We say that X satisfies the fixed point property (weak fixed point property) if every non-expansive mapping defined from a convex closed bounded (convex weakly compact) subset of X into itself has a fixed point. We say that X satisfies the stable fixed point property (stable weak fixed point property) if the same is true for every equivalent norm which is close enough to the original one. Denote by P(X) the set formed by all equivalent norms with the topology of the uniform convergence on the unit ball of X. We prove that the subset of P(X) formed by the norms failing the fixed point property is dense in P(X) when X is a non-distortable space which fails the fixed point property. In particular, no renorming of ?1 can satisfy the stable fixed point property. Furthermore, we show some examples of distortable spaces failing the weak fixed point property, which can be renormed to satisfy the stable weak fixed point property. As a consequence we prove that every separable Banach space can be renormed to satisfy the stable weak fixed point property.  相似文献

Hagler and the first named author introduced a class of hereditarily l 1 Banach spaces which do not possess the Schur property. Then the first author extended these spaces to a class of hereditarily l p Banach spaces for 1 ⩽ p < ∞. Here we use these spaces to introduce a new class of hereditarily l p (c 0) Banach spaces analogous of the space of Popov. In particular, for p = 1 the spaces are further examples of hereditarily l 1 Banach spaces failing the Schur property.  相似文献

We study universality problems in Banach space theory. We show that if A is an analytic class, in the Effros-Borel structure of subspaces of C([0,1]), of non-universal separable Banach spaces, then there exists a non-universal separable Banach space Y, with a Schauder basis, that contains isomorphs of each member of A with the bounded approximation property. The proof is based on the amalgamation technique of a class C of separable Banach spaces, introduced in the paper. We show, among others, that there exists a separable Banach space R not containing L1(0,1) such that the indices β and rND are unbounded on the set of Baire-1 elements of the ball of the double dual R∗∗ of R. This answers two questions of H.P. Rosenthal. We also introduce the concept of a strongly bounded class of separable Banach spaces. A class C of separable Banach spaces is strongly bounded if for every analytic subset A of C there exists YC that contains all members of A up to isomorphism. We show that several natural classes of separable Banach spaces are strongly bounded, among them the class of non-universal spaces with a Schauder basis, the class of reflexive spaces with a Schauder basis, the class of spaces with a shrinking Schauder basis and the class of spaces with Schauder basis not containing a minimal Banach space X.  相似文献
