We consider the triangles with vertices x, −x and y where x,y are points on the unit sphere of a normed space. Using the geometric means of the variable lengths of the sides of these triangles, we define two geometric constants for Banach spaces. These constants are closely related to the modulus of convexity of the space under consideration, and they seem to represent a useful tool to estimate the exact values of the James and Jordan–von Neumann constants of some Banach spaces.  相似文献

In this paper, we investigate the characteristics of the metric projection operator P K : B → K, where B is a Banach space with dual space B?, and K is a nonempty closed convex subset of B. Then we apply its properties to study the existence of solutions of variational inequalities in uniformly convex and uniformly smooth Banach spaces.  相似文献

In this paper, we study continuity properties of the mappingP: (xA)→PA(x) in a nonreflexive Banach space where PA is the metric projection onto A. Our results extend the existing convergence theorems on the best approximations in a reflexive Banach space to nonreflexive Banach spaces by using Wijsman convergence of sets.  相似文献

Let X be a Banach space and E be a closed bounded subset of X. For x ? X, we define D(x, E) = sup{‖ x ? e‖:e ? E}. The set E is said to be remotal (in X) if, for every x ? X, there exists e ? E such that D(x, E) = ‖x ? e‖. The object of this paper is to characterize those reflexive Banach spaces in which every closed bounded convex set is remotal. Such a result enabled us to produce a convex closed and bounded set in a uniformly convex Banach space that is not remotal. Further, we characterize Banach spaces in which every bounded closed set is remotal.  相似文献

In this paper we study very smooth points of Banach spaces with special emphasis on spaces of operators. We show that when the space of compact operators is anM-ideal in the space of bounded operators, a very smooth operatorT attains its norm at a unique vectorx (up to a constant multiple) andT(x) is a very smooth point of the range space. We show that if for every equivalent norm on a Banach space, the dual unit ball has a very smooth point then the space has the Radon-Nikodym property. We give an example of a smooth Banach space without any very smooth points.  相似文献

Even infinite-dimensional real Banach spaces   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
This article is a continuation of a paper of the first author [V. Ferenczi, Uniqueness of complex structure and real hereditarily indecomposable Banach spaces, Adv. Math. 213 (1) (2007) 462–488] about complex structures on real Banach spaces. We define a notion of even infinite-dimensional real Banach space, and prove that there exist even spaces, including HI or unconditional examples from [V. Ferenczi, Uniqueness of complex structure and real hereditarily indecomposable Banach spaces, Adv. Math. 213 (1) (2007) 462–488] and C(K) examples due to Plebanek [G. Plebanek, A construction of a Banach space C(K) with few operators, Topology Appl. 143 (2004) 217–239]. We extend results of [V. Ferenczi, Uniqueness of complex structure and real hereditarily indecomposable Banach spaces, Adv. Math. 213 (1) (2007) 462–488] relating the set of complex structures up to isomorphism on a real space to a group associated to inessential operators on that space, and give characterizations of even spaces in terms of this group. We also generalize results of [V. Ferenczi, Uniqueness of complex structure and real hereditarily indecomposable Banach spaces, Adv. Math. 213 (1) (2007) 462–488] about totally incomparable complex structures to essentially incomparable complex structures, while showing that the complex version of a space defined by S. Argyros and A. Manoussakis [S. Argyros, A. Manoussakis, An indecomposable and unconditionally saturated Banach space, Studia Math. 159 (1) (2003) 1–32] provides examples of essentially incomparable complex structures which are not totally incomparable.  相似文献

In this paper we present a method to obtain Banach spaces of universal and almost-universal disposition with respect to a given class M of normed spaces. The method produces, among others, the only separable Banach space of almost-universal disposition with respect to the class F of finite-dimensional spaces (Gurari? space G); or the only, under CH, Banach space with density character the continuum which is of universal disposition with respect to the class S of separable spaces (Kubis space K). We moreover show that K is isomorphic to an ultrapower of the Gurari? space and that it is not isomorphic to a complemented subspace of any C(K)-space. Other properties of spaces of universal disposition are also studied: separable injectivity, partially automorphic character and uniqueness.  相似文献

In this paper we study the connection between the metric projection operator PK : B →K, where B is a reflexive Banach space with dual space B^* and K is a non-empty closed convex subset of B, and the generalized projection operators ∏K : B → K and πK : B^* → K. We also present some results in non-reflexive Banach spaces.  相似文献

In this paper we initiate a quantitative study of strong proximinality. We define a quantity ϵ(x, t) which we call as modulus of strong proximinality and show that the metric projection onto a strongly proximinal subspace Y of a Banach space X is continuous at x if and only if ϵ(x, t) is continuous at x whenever t > 0. The best possible estimate of ϵ(x, t) characterizes spaces with 1 \frac121 \frac{1}{2} ball property. Estimates of ϵ(x, t) are obtained for subspaces of uniformly convex spaces and of strongly proximinal subspaces of finite codimension in C(K).  相似文献

We investigate relationships between inessential operators and improjective operators acting between Banach spaces X and Y, emphasizing the case in which one of the spaces is a C(K) space. We show that they coincide in many cases, but they are different in the case X = YC(K 0), where K 0 is a compact space constructed by Koszmider.  相似文献

In this paper we study a geometric property for Banach spaces called condition (*), introduced by de Reynaet al in [3], A Banach space has this property if for any weakly null sequencex n of unit vectors inX, ifx * n is any sequence of unit vectors inX * that attain their norm at xn’s, then . We show that a Banach space satisfies condition (*) for all equivalent norms iff the space has the Schur property. We also study two related geometric conditions, one of which is useful in calculating the essential norm of an operator.  相似文献

Let K be a closed convex subset of a Banach space X. We consider complete metric spaces of self-mappings of K which are nonexpansive with respect to a convex function on X. We prove that the iterates of a generic operator in these spaces converge strongly. In some cases the limits do not depend on the initial points and are the unique fixed point of the operator.  相似文献

We investigate non-separable Banach spaces whose norm-open sets are countable unions of sets closed in the weak topology and a narrower class of Banach spaces with a network for the norm topology which is σ-discrete in the weak topology. In particular, we answer a question of Arhangel'skii exhibiting various examples of non-separable function spaces C(K) with a σ-discrete network for the pointwise topology and (consistently) we answer some questions of Edgar and Oncina concerning Borel structures and Kadec renormings in Banach spaces.  相似文献

We study the short-time Fourier transformation, modulation spaces, Gabor representations and time-frequency localization operators, for functions and tempered distributions that have as range space a Banach or a Hilbert space. In the Banach space case the theory of modulation spaces contains some modifications of the scalar-valued theory, depending on the Banach space. In the Hilbert space case the modulation spaces have properties similar to the scalar-valued case and the Gabor frame theory essentially works. For localization operators in this context symbols are operator-valued. We generalize two results from the scalar-valued theory on continuity on certain modulation spaces when the symbol belongs to an Lp,q space and M, respectively. The first result is true for any Banach space as range space, and the second result is true for any Hilbert space as range space.  相似文献

In this paper, we extend the Moreau (Riesz) decomposition theorem from Hilbert spaces to Banach spaces. Criteria for a closed subspace to be (strongly) orthogonally complemented in a Banach space are given. We prove that every closed subspace of a Banach space X with dim X ≥ 3 (dim X ≤ 2) is strongly orthognally complemented if and only if the Banach space X is isometric to a Hilbert space (resp. strictly convex), which is complementary to the well-known result saying that every closed subspace of a Banach space X is topologically complemented if and only if the Banach space X is isomorphic to a Hilbert space.  相似文献

Let F be a Banach space. We establish necessary and sufficient conditions for the Dunford integration operator, from the space of F‐valued Dunford integrable functions to the bidual of F, to belong to a given operator ideal. We also show how this fact can be used to characterize important classes of Banach spaces, such as Banach spaces with the Banach‐Saks property, separable Banach spaces not containing c0, Banach spaces not containing c0 or ?1 and Asplund spaces not containing c0.  相似文献

We consider a Gelfand-Phillips type property for the weak topology. The main results that we obtain are (1) for certain Banach spaces, E?? F inherits this property from E and F, and (2) the spaces Lp(μ, E) have this property when E does. A subset A of a Banach space E is a limited set if every (bounded linear) operator T:E → c0 maps A onto a relatively compact subset of c0. The Banach space E has the Gelfand-Phillips property if every limited set is relatively compact. In this note, we study the analogous notions set in the weak topology. Thus we say that A ? E is a Grothendieck set if every T: E → c0 maps A onto a relatively weakly compact set; and E is said to have the weak type GP property if every Grothendieck set in E is relatively weakly compact. In the papers [3, 4 and 6], it is shown among other results that the ?-tensor product E and the spaces Lp(μ, E) inherit the Gelfand-Phillips property from E and F. In this paper, we study the same questions for the weak type GP property. It is easily verified that continuous linear images of Grothendieck sets are Grothendieck and that the weak type GP property is inherited by subspaces. Among the spaces with the weak type GP property one easily finds the separable spaces, and more generally, spaces with a weak* sequentially compact dual ball. Also, C(K) spaces where K is (DCSC) are weak type GP (see [3] and the discussion before Corollary 4 below). A Grothendieck space (a Banach space whose unit ball is a Grothendieck set) has the weak type GP if and only if it is reflexive.  相似文献

Summary We obtain several properties of the normed cone of semi-Lipschitz functions defined on a quasi-metric space (X,d) that vanish at a fixed point x0X. For instance, we prove that it is both bicomplete and right K-sequentially complete, and the unit ball is compact with respect to the topology of quasi-uniform convergence. Furthermore, it has a structure of a Banach space if and only if (X,d) is a metric space.  相似文献

We prove that every Banach space can be isometrically and 1-complementably embedded into a Banach space which satisfies property β and has the same character of density. Then we show that, nevertheless, property β satisfies a hereditary property. We study strong subdifferentiability of norms with property β to characterize separable polyhedral Banach spaces as those admitting a strongly subdifferentiable β norm. In general, a Banach space with such a norm is polyhedral. Finally, we provide examples of non-reflexive spaces whose usual norm fails property β and yet it can be approximated by norms with this property, namely (L 1[0,1], ‖·‖1) and (C(K), ‖·‖∗) whereK is a separable Hausdorff compact space To the memory of A.
