The temperature dependence of the surface tension was measured by the pendant drop method for four compounds from the homologous series of alkylcyanobiphenyls (nCB), in the nematic liquid crystal and isotropic phases. For 8CB (octylcyanobiphenyl) the temperature dependence was also measured in the smectic range. Not very close to the isotropic transition temperature, and with the exception of 8CB, the surface tension decreases with increase in temperature in the nematic range. A downward jump at the transition temperature was observed for all liquid crystals studied. The shape of the drop in the smectic A phase of 8CB gives indications of stratification in a system of terraces.  相似文献

A photoresponsive azobenzene molecule DCAZO2 with two cholesteryl groups linked to both sides of the azobenzene group is doped in a mixture of nematic liquid crystal E7 and chiral dopant S811 (61.9 wt% E7, 36.1 wt% S811 and 2.0 wt% DCAZO2). Cooled from isotropic phase to 33.0°C, chiral nematic liquid crystal (N*LC) was formed in the sample and then the temperature was kept unchanged at 33.0°C. UV light irradiation induces the transcis photoisomerisation and thus an obvious phase transition. When the azobenzene groups isomerise to a cis-saturated state, the UV light was turned off and the white light was turned on at the same time. The bent-shaped cis isomer then turns back to the planar trans isomer gradually. A blue–green platelet texture representing cubic blue phase (BP) was observed and the size of the platelets was increased along with the cistrans isomerisation. UV–vis absorption spectra indicate that the photoinduced BP exists when the isomerisation degree is between 79% and 18%, and further cistrans isomerisation change BP back into N*LC. The large geometric structure of the cholesteryl groups and the large bent angle θ of the cis isomer are supposed to be responsible for the interesting result.  相似文献

Two series of new liquid crystalline compounds containing a non-activated arylazoindolinobenzospiropyran, ABP-SPAB 1a-1e (series 1) and SPAP-ABPC 2a-2e (series 2), have been synthesized. These LC dyes were characterized by a differential scanning calorimetry polarizing optical microscopy, X-ray diffraction and electro-optical measurements. All but one of the series 1 compounds examined exhibit monotropic second and/or third transition liquid crystal phases on cooling from the isotropic liquid. In particular, ABP-SPAB 1b shows a monotropic SmC phase, in addition to a SmA phase. In series 2, most of the compounds exhibit a monotropic nematic phase on cooling. SPAP-ABPC 2c forms an enantiotropic nematic phase and a monotropic SmA phase; 2e shows enantiotropic nematic and SmA phases.  相似文献

Liquid crystalline properties of five series of biphenyl derivatives connected with p-nitrophenyl, phenyl, 2-naphthyl, 9-phenathryl and bromo as the terminal groups via flexible spacers were studied. All the compounds exhibited nematic phase. The nematic–isotropic or isotropic–nematic transition properties resulted in an odd–even effect as the length of the spacers was varied, in which the even members exhibited higher values, for the compounds with p-nitrophenyl, phenyl, 2-naphthyl and 9-phenanthryl groups, while the transitional properties of the compounds substituted with bromo atom as the terminal group instead of the aryl groups did not show such odd–even effect. These results suggest that the aryl rings, such as p-nitrophenyl, phenyl, 2-naphthyl and 9-phenanthryl groups, play a role of mesogen while the terminal bromo atom does not. The effect of the terminal aryl rings on the liquid crystalline properties will be reported.  相似文献

The thermophysical properties of mixtures of poly (2-phenoxyethylacrylate) and 4-cyano-4′-pentyl-biphenyl, 5CB, are investigated using polarizing optical microscopy (POM) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The polymer has a molar mass M w = 181 000 g mol -1 the low molecular mass liquid crystal exhibits a nematic to isotropic transition at 35.3°C and crystallizes below 23°C. The phase diagram exhibits miscibility gaps in certain regions of temperature and composition where coexisting nematic and isotropic phases are found. From a practical point of view when considering the electro-optical applications of these systems, it proves to be useful to know precisely the amount of small liquid crystal molecules dissolved in the polymer matrix and the concentration of polymer in the nematic phase. The former quantity has a mechanical impact due to a plasticizing effect, an optical impact since it changes the polymer refractive index, while the polymer in the nematic phase shifts the transition temperatures influencing the electro-optical response of the liquid crystal. The present work addresses these important aspects using POM and DSC.  相似文献

Isoxazole-based bent-core liquid crystals (LCs) derived from naturally occurring curcumin were synthesised and their LC properties were investigated by polarising optical microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry and X-ray diffraction techniques. Five compounds, including a branched alkyl chain derivative, were prepared and characterised. These derivatives exhibit enantiotropic mesophases. While lower homologues display wide-temperature-range nematic phase, a longer-chain derivative 3d shows smectic C phase in addition to the nematic phase. The bent angle in these compounds is in between calamitic LCs and banana LCs. Therefore, the molecules escape from polar order packing observed in typical bent-core LCs. Increasing the length of alkyl chain reduces both melting and isotropic temperatures in the series. However, the compound with branched alkyl chains exhibits significant reduction in the nematic-isotropic temperature only. Detailed XRD experiments confirm the presence of the N phase in the lower homologues and SmC phase in a higher homologue.  相似文献

We synthesised 1,2-bis(6-alkoxy-2-naphthyl)acetylene as a new dinaphthylacetylene liquid crystal (LC) compound with alkoxy tails of length m (DNA–OCm) and characterised their phase behaviour by polarising optical microscopy and differential scanning calorimetry, where all compounds exhibited a nematic phase. Also, we measured the actual, and not extrapolated, Δn values of this target compound, and our results show the birefringence potential of the pure LC compound. They have high birefringence values, with the highest value of approximately 0.5 obtained for DNA–OC2 at 550 nm at 10°C above the nematic?crystal transition temperature.  相似文献

Abstract

We have studied the heat capacity of the thermotropic liquid crystal, octylcyanobiphenyl (8CB), confined to the nearly cylindrical, 0·2 μm diameter pores of Anopore membranes. Orientation of the nematic director within the pores can be controlled with surface treatment. It is known from NMR measurements that the nematic director is aligned parallel to the pore axis in the untreated membrane. A perpendicular alignment is obtained when the pore surface is treated with lecithin. The second order smectic A to nematic (SA–N) and the weakly first order nematic to isotropic (N–I) phase transitions of 8CB were studied in these pores, for both director orientations, using an AC calorimetry technique. Effects on heat capacity amplitudes, transition temperature shifts, rounding and broadening of these phase transitions will be presented and contrasted with bulk measurements.  相似文献

The induction of liquid crystal orientation through mechanical stretching was investigated for polymer dispersed liquid crystals (PDLCs) by means of infrared dichroism. Using a nematic liquid crystal BL006 and polyacrylic acid as the polymer matrix, it was possible to stretch the PDLC films with BL006 in either the isotropic or the nematic phase. After cooling the films under strain to room temperature, the molecular orientation of BL006 was found to be much higher for films that contained isotropic liquid droplets of BL006 at the time of stretching than for films that had nematic droplets. Stretching PDLC films with isotropic droplets results in no molecular orientation, but the orientation is induced during the subsequent cooling when BL006 goes through the isotropic-to-nematic phase transition. Interestingly for PAA/BL006, the nematic director orients along the long axes of the elongated droplets despite liquid crystal anchoring perpendicular to the polymer interface.  相似文献

Pretransitional fluctuations in the isotropic phase of liquid crystalline and non‐liquid crystalline alkyl cyanobiphenyls have been investigated using light scattering and magnetic birefringence measurements. We find evidence for a virtual isotropic‐nematic phase transition in short‐chain alkyl cyanobiphenyls with no observable nematic phase. The measured temperature dependence of fluctuations is well‐described by mean‐field theory. Virtual phase transition temperatures extrapolated from separate light scattering and magnetic birefringence experiments are in good agreement. Landau–de Gennes model parameters for the compounds investigated are calculated from the experimental results.  相似文献

Synthesis and characterisation are carried out in N-(-4-ethyloxybenzylidene)-4?-alkoxyanilines, 2O.Om liquid crystalline (LC) compounds with m = 3, 4 and 6–10. All the compounds exhibit monovariant nematic phase except with m = 10; the LC material shows bivariant nematic-smectic-C in addition to the nematic phase. Further, the variation in density with temperature in all these seven compounds is studied. The density and thermal expansion coefficient results reveal that the phase transitions, namely isotropic to nematic and nematic to SmC, present in these compounds show first-order nature as expected and that all the parameters show characteristic change in the vicinity of the phase transformation. The results are discussed in the light of the data available on other nO.Om compounds.  相似文献

Blends composed of isotropic linear poly (n-butylacrylate) of molecular weight M w?=?112,000 g mol?1 and the commercial four-component nematic low molecular weight liquid crystal (LC) mixture E7 exhibit a strong shift of the single nematic–isotropic transition temperature T NI compared to that of the pure LCs, which was evidenced by using two complementary experimental techniques: differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and high-performance liquid chromatography. The first one provides direct information about phase behaviour and variation of T NI of the polymer/LC blends, whereas the second one consists of analysing qualitatively and quantitatively the composition of millimetre-sized segregated LC domains in the two-phase region of the phase diagram.

In order to understand the origin of the unusual phase behaviour, several LC blends were prepared by modifying the concentration of the four single LC components that are present in the eutectic E7 mixture, following the results from the previous chromatographic analysis. These model blends were investigated by DSC measurements, showing that the variation, particularly of the terphenyl LC compound concentration, plays a determining role for the phase behaviour of the LC mixture and the shift of T NI.  相似文献

Abstract

A radial hydrodynamic flow in the nematic phase of free, suspended cylindrical films of 4-n-heptyl- and decyloxybenzoic acid and in 4,4′-di-n-heptyl-oxyazoxybenzene has been observed. The flow starts about 7°C before the phase transition into the smectic C phase. Under the same experimental conditions such a hydrodynamic flow is not established in free nematic films of 4-n-heptyl-and octyloxy-4′-cyanobiphenyl, 4,4′-dimethoxyazoxybenzene and N-(4-ethoxybenzylidene)-4′-n-butylaniline after the completion of the transition from the isotropic liquid to the nematic phase. The observed hydrodynamic flow is explained by a non-linear temperature dependence of the surface tension.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

The characteristics of the twist-bend nematic (NTB) phase of an achiral asymmetrical rigid bent-core liquid crystal (LC), the ends of which are terminated by symmetric alkyl chains, are reported. The nematic–nematic phase transition and its properties are studied by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), polarising microscopy and the electro-optic techniques. Large domains of opposite handedness are observed in the absence of the external field in the NTB phase. Another set of periodic striped pattern consisting of domains with sharp boundaries is formed when a high-frequency electric field with a magnitude above its threshold is applied across a planarly aligned cell. The neighbouring domains are of opposite chirality. The temperature dependence of the heliconical angle θ0 is determined from the birefringence measurements using Haller’s extrapolation technique. This material shows lower values of the heliconical angle (~9.3° at a temperature of 155°C within the NTB phase) when compared with the previously reported dimer-based twist-bend nematic LCs (31°±3°).  相似文献

Abstract

The results of optical activity measurements on the smectic A* phase of 1-methylheptyl 4′-[(4-n-tetradecyloxyphenyl)proprioloyloxy]biphenyl-4-carboxylate (14P1M7) and the chiral nematic phase of a chiral–racemic mixture of S-4-(2-methylbutyl)phenyl 4-decyloxybenzoate (CE6) are shown to be extremely similar. This is in full agreement with the proposed model of the A* phase as a twistgrain-boundary (TGB) phase. In addition, new light scattering measurements using circularly polarized light in a back-scattering geometry yield information on the fluctuations in the isotropic phase. Unlike in chiral nematics where only one structural mode is affected, the data show a strong deviation from the normal temperature dependence near the isotropic–smectic A* transition for two structural modes. Possible reasons for this behaviour in highly chiral smectic liquid crystals are discussed.  相似文献

Two series of new hydroxy tail-terminated cyanobiphenyl compounds are described. The 4′-ω-hydroxyalkynyl-4-cyanobiphenyl compounds (1a1g) were synthesised as the key intermediates to the 4′-?ω-hydroxyalkyl-4-cyanobiphenyl compounds (2a2g) obtained upon reduction of the acetylenes. Many of these ω-hydroxyalkynyl and ω-hydroxyalkyl cyanobiphenyl compounds exhibit nematic mesophases and they also serve as precursors for the synthesis of other interesting materials. Using density functional theory, we calculate the dipole moment of all relevant ω-hydroxyalkynyl and ω-hydroxyalkyl cyanobiphenyl compounds and find a correlation between the calculated dipole moments and measured crystalline to nematic or isotropic liquid transition temperatures.  相似文献

Abstract

An X-ray scattering study is presented of the lamellar/nematic/isotropic sequence in the lyotropic system DACI/H2O/NH4Cl. The whole reciprocal space of monocrystalline samples oriented in magnetic fields are reconstructed from their two dimensional sections on photographic films. Intense diffuse scatterings are observed in the lamellar phase, around and away from the Bragg spots. Their evolution close to the lamellar/nematic transition reveals the presence of intense structural fluctuations. They take place over temperature ranges which are significantly greater than those associated with the smectic/nematic transitions in thermotropic liquid crystals. A similar situation is observed in the isotropic phase in the vicinity of the nematic/isotropic transition.  相似文献

A series of liquid crystalline polymers (LCPs) have been synthesised by two cholesteric monomers M1, M2 and a nematic monomer M3. The chemical structures and liquid crystalline properties of the monomers and polymers have been characterised by FTIR, 1H-NMR, differential scanning calorimetry, thermogravimetric analyses, X-ray diffraction measurements and polarising optical microscopy. All LCPs show a high thermal stability with wide mesophase temperature ranges. For polymer P1 bearing only cholesteric LC monomers component, it shows a cholesteric phase, whereas others display a blue phase besides a cholesteric phase. The formation of the blue phase is based on the structures of the polymers and the produced biaxial helix. The glass transition temperature and isotropic temperature of the polymers decrease on heating cycle with increasing the content of M3 in the polymers. The specific rotation values of the polymers are temperature-sensitive. The reflection spectra of polymers P1P6 show that the maximum reflected wavelengths shift to long wavelength with increasing the content of M3 in the polymer systems. The frequency and intensity of the bands change sharply at the temperature where cholesteric phase changes to blue phase, but they show a weak dependence on temperature in the blue phase.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

The synthesis and characterisation of several members of the 1,ω-bis(4-cyanobiphenyl-4′-yl) alkane (CBnCB) and the 1-(4-cyanobiphenyl-4′-yloxy)-ω-(4-cyanobiphenyl-4′-yl) alkane (CBnOCB) homologous series are reported. The new odd members described CB5CB, CB13CB, CB4OCB, CB8OCB and CB10OCB all exhibit twist-bend nematic and nematic phases. The members of these series already reported in literature, CB7CB, CB9CB, CB11CB and CB6OCB, were also prepared in order to allow for a direct comparison of their transitional properties. The properties of these dimers are also compared to those of the corresponding members of the 1,ω-bis(4-cyanobiphenyl-4,-yloxy) alkanes (CBOnOCB). For any given total spacer length, for odd members of these series, the nematic–isotropic transition temperatures and associated entropy changes are greatest for the CBOnOCB dimer and lowest for the CBnCB dimer. These trends are understood in terms of molecular shape. For short spacer lengths, the twist-bend nematic–nematic transition temperature (TNTBN) is higher for the CBnOCB series than for the CBnCB series but this is reversed as the spacer length increases. Of the CBOnOCB dimers, a virtual value of TNTBN was estimated for CBO3OCB and TNTBN was measured for CBO5OCB. These values are considerably lower than those observed for the corresponding members of the CBnCB or CBnOCB series. The dependence of TNTBN on molecular structure is discussed not only in terms of the molecular curvature but also in the ability of the molecules to pack efficiently. As the temperature range of the preceding nematic phase increases, so the twist-bend nematic–nematic transition entropy change decreases and the transition approaches second order for the longer spacers. For comparative purposes, the transitional behaviour of the even-membered dimers CB6CB, CB5OCB and CBO4OCB is reported and differences accounted for in terms of molecular shape.  相似文献

Phase diagrams of multi‐wall carbon nanotube (MWNT)/nematic liquid crystal (E7) and buckminsterfullerene (C60I h)/nematic liquid crystal (E7) binary systems have been investigated by means of polarizing optical microscopy and differential scanning calorimetry. It was found that the isotropic–nematic phase transition temperature (T NI) of the liquid crystal component was enhanced by the incorporation of MWNT within a small composition gap. A chimney‐type phase diagram can be identified in the MWNT/E7 mixture over a narrow range of ~0.1–0.2% MWNT concentration. Upon substituting the nanotubes with isotropic fillers such as fullerene, the (C60I h)/E7 blend showed no discernible change of T NI in the same concentration range of the chimney of the MWNT/E7 mixture, suggesting a significant contribution of anisotropy (or the aspect ratio) of the nanotubes to the entropy of the system containing liquid crystal molecules. This enhanced T NI phenomenon may be attributed to anisotropic alignment of liquid crystal molecules along the carbon nanotube bundles.  相似文献
