The objective of the study was to investigate the effect of the organo‐modified nanosepiolite (ONSep) on improving the fire safety of polypropylene (PP). The composites based on PP, flame retardant master batch (MB‐FR, 25 wt% PP+50 wt% decabromodiphenyl ether (DBDPE)+25% antimony trioxide (ATO)) and ONSep were prepared via melt blending. The results of the limiting oxygen index (LOI) and vertical burning rating (UL‐94) test indicated that PP/40 wt% MB composites had no rating with seriously dripping phenomenon, while the LOI value was only 22.5. However, as 4 wt% ONSep was added in PP/40 wt% MB composites, the composites achieved UL94 V‐0 rating and the LOI value was 24.3. In comparison, PP/50 wt% MB composites could not reach the V‐0 rating either. The TGA results revealed that the addition of ONSep enhanced the thermal stability of the PP/MB‐FR composites. The cone calorimeter results indicated that the heat release rate, average mass loss rate, smoke production rate and smoke temperature of the PP/40 wt% MB‐FR/4 wt% ONSep composites decreased in comparison with those of PP/40 wt% MB‐FR composites. Simultaneously, the Young modulus and impact strength were also much better improved with the increase of ONSep loading. Therefore, the synergistic flame retardancy of ONSep in PP/MB‐FR matrix significantly containing a halogen based flame retardant (DBDPE) significantly improved the fire safety and mechanical properties of the composites, and allowed to decrease the total amount of brominated fire retardants.  相似文献

In order to improve the flame retardant of polylactide (PLA), the synergistic effect of graphitic carbon nitride (g‐C3N4) with commercial‐available flame retardants melamine pyrophosphate (MPP) and 9,10‐dihydro‐9‐oxa‐10‐phosphaphenanthrene‐10‐oxide (DOPO) was investigated. The PLA composites containing 5 wt% g‐C3N4 and 10 wt% DOPO had a highest limited oxygen index (LOI) value of 29.5% and reached the V‐0 rating of UL‐94 test. The cone calorimeter tests exhibited that DOPO had a better synergistic effect with g‐C3N4 than MPP to improve flame retardancy of PLA. The peak heat release rate (pHRR) and total heat release (THR) of PLA composites containing 10 wt% DOPO could be reduced by 25.2% and 23.6%, respectively, as compared with those of pure PLA. The presence of rich phosphorus element and aromatic groups in DOPO contributed to obtain continuous compact char layer and increase the graphitization level of char residues, thereby, resulting in improving the flame retardancy of PLA together with g‐C3N4. In addition, the incorporation of DOPO can serve as a plasticizer to reduce the complex viscosity, improving the processability of PLA composites.  相似文献

The natural basalt fiber (BF) was incorporated into EVA composites with environmental‐friendly nickel alginate‐brucite based flame retardant (NiFR), to further improve the flame‐retardant effect and mechanical properties. The flame retardancy of EVA composites were characterized by LOI, UL 94, and cone test. With 55 wt% loading, 3BF/52NiFR had the highest LOI value of 31.9 vol.% in all fiber reinforced composites and pass UL 94V‐0 ratting. And comparing to 55B composite with untreated brucite, 3BF/52NiFR decreased peak of heat release rate by 47.8%, total heat release by 21.9%, and total smoke production by 35.5% and kept more residue 54.0% during cone test. Moreover, 3BF/52NiFR also enhanced the mechanical properties of composites by better compatibility with EVA matrix. BF/NiFR exert synergistic flame‐retardant effect major in promoting charring effect in condensed phase during combustion. The fire‐resisted and rigid BF into the char layer reinforced the intensity of protective barrier which prolonged the residence time of pyrolysis carbonaceous groups degraded from EVA matrix, resulting in less heat and smoke release.  相似文献

The flame retardancy of a novel intumescent flame‐retardant polypropylene (IFR‐PP) system, which was composed of a charring agent (CA), ammonium polyphosphate (APP), and polypropylene (PP), could be enhanced significantly by adding a small amount (1.0 wt%) of an organic montmorillonite (O‐MMT). The synergistic flame‐retardant effect was studied systematically. The thermal stability and combustion behavior of the flame‐retarded PP were also investigated by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), limiting oxygen index (LOI), vertical burning test (UL‐94), scanning electronic microscopy (SEM), and cone calorimeter test (CCT). TGA results demonstrated that the onset decomposition temperatures of IFR‐PP samples, with or without O‐MMT, were higher than that of neat PP. Compared with IFR‐PP, the LOI value of IFR‐PP containing 1.0 wt% O‐MMT was increased from 30.8 to 33.0, and the UL‐94 rating was also enhanced to V‐0 from V‐1 when the total loading of flame retardant was the same. The cone calorimeter results showed that the IFR‐PP with 1.0 wt% of O‐MMT had the lowest heat release rate (HRR), total heat release (THR), total smoke production (TSP), CO production (COP), CO2 production (CO2P), and mass loss (ML) of all the studied IFR‐PP samples, with or without O‐MMT. All these results indicated that O‐MMT had a significantly synergistic effect on the flame‐retardancy of IFR‐PP at a low content of O‐MMT. Copyright © 2009 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

The charring agent (CNCA‐DA) containing triazine and benzene rings was combined with ammonium polyphosphate (APP) to form intumescent flame retardant (IFR), and it was occupied to modify polylactide (PLA). The flame retardant properties and mechanism of flame retardant PLA composites were investigated by the limited oxygen index (LOI), vertical burning test (UL‐94), thermogravimetric analysis, microscale combustion calorimetry, scanning electron microscopy, laser Raman spectroscopy analysis and X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The analysis from LOI and UL‐94 presented that the IFR was very effective in flame retardancy of PLA. When the weight ratio of APP to CNCA‐DA was 3:1, and the IFR loading was 30%, the IFR showed the best effect, and the LOI value reached 45.6%. It was found that when 20 wt% IFR was loaded, the flame retardancy of PLA/IFR still passed UL‐94 V‐0 rating, and its LOI value reached 32.8%. The microscale combustion calorimetry results showed that PLA/IFR had lower heat release rate, total heat release, and heat release capacity than other composites, and there was an obvious synergistic effect between APP and CNCA‐DA for PLA. IFR containing APP/CNCA‐DA had good thermal stability and char‐forming ability with the char residue 29.3% at 800°C under N2 atmosphere. Scanning electron microscopy observation further indicated that IFR could promote forming continuous and compact intumescent char layer. The laser Raman spectroscopy analysis and X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis results indicated that an appropriate graphitization degree of the residue char was formed, and more O and N were remained to form more cross‐linking structure.

The main aim of this work was to investigate the synergistic effect of expandable graphite (EG) and aluminum hypophosphite (AHP) on the flame retardancy of rigid polyurethane foams (RPUFs). A series of flame retardant RPUF containing EG and AHP were prepared by one‐shot and free‐rise method. The flame retardant, thermal degradation, and combustion properties of RPUF hybrids were characterized through limiting oxygen index (LOI) test, vertical burning (UL‐94) test, thermogravimetric analysis and microscale combustion calorimeter. The LOI and UL‐94 results showed that the RPUF sample with 10 wt% EG and 5 wt% AHP passed UL‐94 V‐0 rating and reached a relatively high LOI value of 28.5%, which is superior over other EG/AHP ratios in RPUF at the equivalent filler loading. Microscale combustion calorimeter results revealed that the incorporation of EG and AHP into RPUF reduced the peak heat release rate and total heat release, thus decrease the fire risk of RPUF significantly. Incorporation of EG and AHP improved the thermal stability of RPUF as observed from the thermogravimetric analysis results and also enhanced the thermal resistance of char layer at high temperature from scanning electron microscopy and Raman spectroscopy. Moreover, it could be seen from thermogravimetric analysis/infrared spectrometry spectra that the addition of EG and AHP significantly decreased the combustible gaseous products such as hydrocarbons and ethers. Finally, the synergistic mechanism in flame retardancy was discussed and speculated. Copyright © 2014 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

The flame retardancy and thermal degradation properties of polypropylene (PP) containing intumescent flame retardant additives, i.e. melamine pyrophosphate (MPyP) and charring‐foaming agent (CFA) were characterized by limiting oxygen index (LOI), UL 94, cone calorimeter, microscale combustion calorimetry, and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). It has been found that the PP material containing only MPyP does not show good flame retardancy even at 30% additive level. Compared with the PP/MPyP binary system, the LOI values of the PP/MPyP/CFA ternary materials at the same additive loading are all increased, and UL 94 rating is raised to V‐0 from no rating (PP/MPyP). The cone calorimeter results show that the heat release rate and mass loss rate of some ternary materials decrease in comparison with the binary material. The microscale combustion calorimetry results indicate that the sample containing 22.5 wt% MPyP and 7.5 wt% CFA has the lowest heat release rate among all samples. The TGA results show that the thermal stability of the materials increases with the addition of MPyP, while decreases with the addition of CFA. Copyright © 2009 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

A comparison of melamine salt of pentaerythritol phosphate (MPP), and a synergistic agents, iron–graphene (IG) was performed in thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) by masterbatch‐melt blending on thermal and flame retardant properties. The flame retardant properties of TPU composites were characterized by limiting oxygen index (LOI), UL 94 and cone calorimeter test (CCT). The CCT results revealed that IG can significantly enhance flame retardant properties of MPP in TPU. The peak heat release rate of neat TPU and flame retardant TPU/MPP composites decreased from 2192.6 and 226.7 to 187.2 kW/m2 compared with that of TPU containing 0.25 wt% IG. The thermal stability and thermal decomposition of TPU composites were characterized by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and thermogravimetric/Fourier infrared spectrum analysis (TG‐IR). The results indicated IG and MPP can improve the thermal stability of TPU. The formation of thermal conductive network by IG can promote the decomposition of MPP into nonflammable melt, which can play the role of heat barrier and restrict the diffusion of fuels into combustion zone and access of oxygen to the unburned fuels. A wrapped nanoflame retardant, designated as polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS)‐poly(4‐bromostyrene) (PBS)‐carbon nanotubes (CNTs), was synthesized via π‐π stacking interactions between the walls of multiwalled carbon nanotubes and the silicon‐bromine containing hybrid copolymer (designated as POSS‐PBS) that was copolymerized by 4‐bromostyrene and acryloyloxyisobutyl polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane. The POSS‐PBS‐CNTs exhibited good dispersibility in epoxy resin (EP) without obvious aggregation. Furthermore, the fire behaviors of this flame‐retardant EP (FR‐EP) nanocomposites were examined via limited oxygen index (LOI) and cone calorimeter (CONE) tests. The FR‐EP had an ideal LOI value of 35.3% and its residual char yield obtained from CONE test was significantly enhanced from 5.9% to 15.3% with the incorporation of 4 wt% POSS‐PBS‐CNTs and 1.33 wt% Sb2O3 into EP matrix. Additionally, the addition of 4 wt% POSS‐PBS‐CNTs or POSS‐PBS can efficiently decrease the peak heat release rate (PHRR) of EP matrix by 41.0% or 45.6%, respectively.  相似文献

A novel phosphorus‐containing, nitrogen‐containing, and sulfur‐containing reactive flame retardant (BPD) was successfully synthesized by 1‐pot reaction. The intrinsic flame‐retardant epoxy resins were prepared by blending different content of BPD with diglycidyl ether of bisphenol‐A (DGEBA). Thermal stability, flame‐retardant properties, and combustion behaviors of EP/BPD thermosets were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), limited oxygen index (LOI) measurement, UL94 vertical burning test, and cone calorimeter test. The flame‐retardant mechanism of BPD was studied by TGA/infrared spectrometry (TGA‐FTIR), pyrolysis‐gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (Py‐GC/MS), morphology, and chemical component analysis of the char residues. The results demonstrated that EP/BPD thermosets not only exhibited outstanding flame retardancy but also kept high glass transition temperature. EP/BPD‐1.0 thermoset achieved LOI value of 39.1% and UL94 V‐0 rating. In comparison to pure epoxy thermoset, the average of heat release rate (av‐HRR), total heat release (THR), and total smoke release (TSR) of EP/BPD‐1.0 thermoset were decreased by 35.8%, 36.5% and 16.5%, respectively. Although the phosphorus content of EP/BPD‐0.75 thermoset was lower than that of EP/DOPO thermoset, EP/BPD‐0.75 thermoset exhibited better flame retardancy than EP/DOPO thermoset. The significant improvement of flame retardancy of EP/BPD thermosets was ascribed to the blocking effect of phosphorus‐rich intumescent char in condensed phase, and the quenching and diluting effects of abundant phosphorus‐containing free radicals and nitrogen/sulfur‐containing inert gases in gaseous phase. There was flame‐retardant synergism between phosphorus, nitrogen, and sulfur of BPD.  相似文献

The effects of aluminum hypophosphite(AHP) as a synergistic agent on the flame retardancy and thermal degradation behavior of intumescent flame retardant polypropylene composites(PP/IFR) containing ammonium polyphosphate(APP) and triazine charring-foaming agent(CFA) were investigated by limiting oxygen index(LOI), UL-94 measurement, thermogravimetric analysis(TGA), cone calorimeter test(CONE), scanning electron microscopy(SEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy(XPS). It was found that the combination of IFR with AHP exhibited an evident synergistic effect and enhanced the flame retardant efficiency for PP matrix. The specimens with the thickness of 0.8 mm can pass UL-94 V-0 rating and the LOI value reaches 33.5% based on the total loading of flame retardant of 24 wt%, and the optimum mass fraction of AHP/IFR is 1:6. The TGA data revealed that AHP could change the degradation behavior of IFR and PP/IFR system, enhance the thermal stability of the IFR and PP/IFR systems at high temperatures and promote the char residue formation. The CONE results revealed that IFR/AHP blends can efficiently reduce the combustion parameters of PP, such as heat release rate(HRR), total heat release(THR), smoke production rate(SPR) and so on. The morphological structures of char residue demonstrated that AHP is of benefit to the formation of a more compact and homogeneous char layer on the materials surface during burning. The analysis of XPS indicates that AHP may promote the formation of sufficient char on the materials surface and improve the flame retardant properties.  相似文献

The ferrocene‐based polymer (PDPFDE) accompanied with traditional intumescent flame retardant (IFR) system (ammonium polyphosphate (APP)/pentaerythritol (PER) = 3/1, mass ratio) has been used as additive flame retardant in polypropylene (PP), aiming to lower the total loading amount. The thermal stability and fire retardant properties were investigated by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), limiting oxygen index (LOI), vertical combustion (UL‐94), and cone calorimetry (CONE). The fire retardant mechanism was studied by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and Raman spectroscopy. The results showed that the PP1 with 25 wt% IFR only passed the UL‐94 V‐1 rating, but the PP6 loaded by 0.5 wt% PDPFDE and 22.5 wt% IFR possessed an LOI value of 28.5% and passed the UL‐94 V‐0 rating; the peak heat release rate (pHRR) and total heat release (THR) are decreased by 63% and 43%, respectively, compared with pure PP. In addition, the char residue of PP6 manifested a very compact and smooth surface, indicating a more effective barrier layer. Meanwhile, it was interesting that the addition of PDPFDE evidently improved the impact strength and elongation at break of PP/IFR composites.  相似文献

The thermal stability and flame-retardancy properties of poly(ethylene terephthalate)/nano-boehmite composites (PET/AlOOH) were investigated using composites prepared in situ. Combustion behaviour and flammability were assessed using the limiting oxygen index (LOI) and cone calorimetry. The incorporation of nano-boehmite increased the LOI of PET from 18 to greater than 25. Cone calorimetry showed that the heat release rates and total smoke production values of PET/AlOOH composites were significantly less than those of pure PET. It also showed that PET/AlOOH combustion produced greater quantities of char residues than did PET combustion. These results showed that nano-boehmite is an effective flame-retardant for PET. Combustion residues were examined using scanning electron microscopy, indicating that nano-boehmite addition produced consistent, thick char crusts. Thermal stability and pyrolysis were investigated using thermogravimetric analysis and pyrolysis-gas chromatography-mass spectrometry, showing that thermal stability of PET/AlOOH was superior to that of pure PET, fewer cracking products were produced in nanocomposite combustion than in pure PET combustion, and pyrolysis of the flame-retardant polyester was incomplete. We propose a condensed phase mechanism for the PET/AlOOH flame-retardancy effect.  相似文献

The flame‐retardant rigid polyurethane foams (RPUFs) with dimethyl methylphosphonate (DMMP) and modified ammonium polyphosphate (MAPP) were prepared. The results showed that the limiting oxygen index (LOI) value was improved by adding DMMP into RPUF/MAPP composite; 10 wt% of DMMP addition can increase the LOI value from 24.3% to 26.0%, where the commercial application standard of RPUF is achieved. Further benefits of using DMMP/MAPP system included restraining of total heat and smoke release, improvement of thermal stability, and char yield of RPUF. The thermogravimetric analysis (TGA)‐gas chromatography‐mass spectrometer (GC‐MS) results indicated that DMMP/MAPP could continuously release PO2 and PO·free radicals in the gas phase. In addition, DMMP/MAPP exhibited the charring effect and barrier effect in the condensed phase, such bi‐flame retardant effect exerted by DMMP/MAPP resulted in the enhanced flame retardant property of RPUF.  相似文献

The flame retardancy mechanisms of poly(1,4‐butylene terephthalate) (PBT) containing microencapsulated ammonium polyphosphate (MAPP) and melamine cyanurate (MC) were investigated via pyrolysis analysis (thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), real‐time Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), TG‐IR), cone calorimeter test, combustion tests (limited oxygen index (LOI), UL‐94), and residue analysis (scanning electron microscopy (SEM)). A loading of 20 wt% MC to PBT gave the PBT composites an LOI of 26%, V‐2 classification in UL‐94 test and a high peak heat release rate (HRR) in cone calorimeter test. Adding APP to PBT/MC composites did not improve their flame retardancy. In comparison with the addition of ammonium polyphosphate (APP) to PBT, MAPP with silica gel shell and MAPP with polyurethane shell both promoted the intumescent char‐forming and improved the flame retardancy of PBT through different mechanisms in the presence of MC. These two halogen‐free PBT composites with V‐0 classification according to UL‐94 test were obtained; their LOI were 32 and 33%, respectively. Copyright © 2010 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

A flame retarding biodegradable polylactic acid (PLA) nanocomposite based on flame retardant composites (containing ammonium polyphosphate (APP), pentaerythritol (PER) and melamine cyanurate (MC) by controlling the weight ratio was 2:2:1) and organomodified zinc aluminum layered double hydroxide (Zn-Al-LDH) has been prepared by melt-compounding directly. The morphology and burning behaviour of nanocomposite with 2 wt% Zn-Al-LDH loadings were investigated. The extent of dispersion of LDH was quantified by wide angle X-ray scattering (WAXS) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM), illuminating the good dispersion state for ZnAl-LDH in the PLA matrix. Significant improvements in fire retardant performance were observed for the nanocomposite from microscale combustion calorimeter (MCC) and cone calorimetry (reducing both the heat release rate and the total heat released). It revealed that incorporation of FR and ZnAl-LDH was very efficient in improving the flame retardance of PLA composite.  相似文献

A type of trialkoxysilane‐containing naphtholoxazine compound (Naph‐boz) was successfully synthesized and combined with ammonium polyphosphate/melamine (APP/ME) as an intumescent flame retardant (IFR) to improve the flame‐retardant efficiency of polyoxymethylene (POM). The Underwriters Laboratories 94 (UL94) vertical burning test, limiting oxygen index (LOI), cone calorimeter, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and Raman spectral analysis were used to study the flame‐retardant properties and related mechanism. The results showed that the formulation with 20 wt.% of APP, 6 wt.% of ME, and 4 wt.% of Naph‐boz passed UL94 V‐1 rating, and the LOI value was improved to 40.3%. Compared with pure POM, the IFR with Naph‐boz had greater reduction in peak heat release rate (lower 74.9%) and total heat release (lower 40.2%). SEM images showed that compact and reinforcing charred layer was formed during the POM/IFR/4Naph‐boz samples combustion, which was beneficial at reducing and maintaining low combustion parameters throughout the cone calorimeter test. The synergistic flame‐retardant effect between Naph‐boz and APP/ME was considered as the reason for the improvement in flame retardancy POM. Furthermore, because of the Naph‐boz was conducive to the compatibility between the flame retardants and matrix, the notched Izod impact strength of POM/IFR/4Naph‐boz composite was higher than that of POM/IFR system.  相似文献
