In this article, short carbon fibers (CFs) reinforced rigid polyurethane (RPU) composites were prepared with the aim of improving both strength and toughness. A tannic acid (TA)‐nickel (Ni) composite coating was spontaneously co‐deposited onto CFs surface by a one‐step electrodeposition method to strengthen the interface bonding of the composites. The satisfactory mechanical properties of the composites were mainly attributed to the superior interfacial adhesion. On the one hand, TA could play a role in refining Ni grain during electrodeposition. On the other hand, the hydroxyl groups attached to composite coating, which were introduced by TA, could react with the RPU matrix to form chemical bonds. When the composites were under stress, the chemical bonds could effectively transfer the stress from matrix to the interface, while the refined Ni crystals could greatly increase the stress transfer path, and thus improve the strength and toughness of the material. Compared with pure RPU, the tensile strength, bending strength, interlaminar shear strength, and impact strength of TA‐Ni‐coated CFs/RPU composites were improved by 14.8%, 83.1%, 28.7%, and 121.4%, respectively.  相似文献

Stress concentration and weak interfacial strength affect the mechanical properties of short carbon fibers (CFs) reinforced polymer composites. In this work, the cauliflower-like short carbon fibers (CCFs) were prepared and the point was to illuminate the effects of fiber morphology on the mechanical properties of the CCFs/rigid polyurethane (RPU) composites. The results indicated that the surface structure of CCFs could increase the surface roughness of the fibers and the contact area between fibers and matrix, thereby promoting the formation of irregular interface. Compared with pure RPU and initial CFs/RPU composites, the strength and toughness of CCFs/RPU composites were simultaneously improved. The satisfactory performance was attributed to the special fibers structure, which played an anchoring role and consumed more energy during crack propagation.  相似文献

The poor interfacial adhesion between carbon fibers (CFs) and polyimide (PI) resin has seriously hampered the application of CF/PI composites. In this work, the interfacial adhesion was efficiently enhanced by grafting on the CF surface. Surface morphology and surface composition of modified carbon fibers were characterized, which indicated that acrylamide was grafted successfully on the CF surface and the surface roughness was increased slightly. After grafting, the interface shear strength of modified carbon fibers/PI composites was significantly improved by 86.96%, and the interlaminar shear strength was enhanced by 55.61% due to the covalent bonds in interphase and the toughening effect of sizing agent. Moreover, the mechanical properties of composites with different interfacial adhesion were measured, which further confirmed the effect of the grafting modification.  相似文献

Pitch‐based short carbon fibers (CFs) were treated by air oxidation and cryogenic nitrogen, respectively. Thereafter the treated and untreated CFs were incorporated into polyimide (PI) matrix to form composites. The CFs before and after treatment were examined by XPS and SEM.The flexural strength of the specimen was determined in a three‐point test machine and the tribological properties of PI composites sliding against GCr15 steel rings were evaluated on an M‐2000 model ring‐on‐block test rig. The results show that the surface of the treated CFs became rougher. Lots of active groups formed on the CF surface after air oxidation. The treatment can effectively improve the mechanical and tribological properties in their PI composites due to the enhanced fiber‐matrix interfacial bonding. Ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) fibers exhibit excellent mechanical property, but their low surface activity limits the application in many fields. In this work, an efficient method was used to improve the surface activity and adhesion property of UHMWPE fibers. The amine functionalized UHMWPE fibers were prepared by the combination of bio‐inspired polydopamine (PDA) and grafted hexamethylene diamine (HMDA). The chemical structure of UHMWPE fibers was characterized by X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy and attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The surface morphologies and mechanical property of the fibers were investigated by scanning electron microscopy and tensile testing respectively. In addition, a single‐fiber pull‐out test was carried out to investigate the adhesion property of the fibers with epoxy resin matrix. The results showed that PDA was coated on the surface of UHMWPE fibers and then HMDA was successfully grafted on the PDA layers. The excellent mechanical property of UHMWPE fibers had no obvious change. Compared with the pristine UHMWPE fibers, the interfacial shear strength of the PDA coated UHMWPE fibers with the epoxy resin matrix improved by 28.3%, while the IFSS of the HMDA grafted UHMWPE fibers had an increase of 82.7%. Inclusion of conductive particles is a convenient way for the enhancement of electrical and thermal conductivities of polymers. However, improvement of the mechanical properties of such composites has remained a challenge. In this work, maleated polyethylene is proposed as a novel matrix for the production of conductive metal–thermoplastic composites with enhanced mechanical properties. The effects of two conductive particles (iron and aluminum) on the morphological, mechanical, electrical, and thermal properties of maleated polyethylene were investigated. Morphological observations revealed that the matrix had excellent adhesion with both metal particles. Increase in particle concentration was shown to improve the tensile strength and modulus of the matrix significantly with iron being slightly more effective. Through‐plane electrical conductivity of maleated polyethylene was also substantially improved after adding iron particles, while percolation was observed at particle contents of around 20–30% vol. In the case of aluminum, no percolation was observed for particle contents of up to 50% vol., which was linked to the orientation of the particles in the in‐plane direction due to the squeezing flow. Inclusion of particles led to substantial increase (over 700%) in the thermal conductivities of both composites. The addition of high concentrations of metal particles to matrix led to the creation of two groups of materials: (i) composites with high electrical and thermal conductivities and (ii) composites with low electrical and high thermal conductivities. Such characteristics of the composites are expected to provide a unique opportunity for applications where a thermally conductive/electrically insulating material is desired. The effects of surface treatment of a carbon fiber (CF) by supersonic atmosphere plasma spraying (SAPS) on the interfacial adhesion behavior and morphology of polypropylene/polystyrene (PP/PS) matrix blends filled CF composites were investigated. Effects of surface treated a commercial CF on mechanical properties are studied. Contact angle was measured to examine the changes in wettability of the CF. The chemical and morphological changes were characterized by using X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy. PP/PS/CF composites were fabricated with and without SAPS treatment, and their interlaminar fracture toughnesses were compared. The results showed that the interlaminar shear strength of composites has been greatly improved filled SAPS modification CF. The water contact angle of resin sample decreased 50% after addition of SAPS surface‐treated CF. Scanning electron microscopy results on the fractured surface exhibited PP/PS blends adhered well around the CFs of the SAPS‐treated specimen compared with that of the untreated specimen. This attributed to the CF interlock, and it improves the wetting between fibers and resins. Copyright © 2017 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

With material consumption increasing, the need for biodegradable materials derived from renewable resources becomes urgent, particularly in the popular field of 3D-printing. Processed natural fibers have been used as fillers for 3D-printing filaments and slurries, yet reports of utilizing pure biomass to 3D-print structures that reach mechanical properties comparable to synthetic plastics are scarce. Here, we develop and characterize slurries for extrusion-based 3D-printing comprised of unprocessed spirulina and varying amounts of cellulose fibers (CFs). Tuning the micro-morphology, density, and mechanical properties of multilayered structures is achieved by modulating the CF amount or drying method. Densified morphologies are obtained upon desiccator-drying, while oven incubation plasticizes the matrix and leads to intermediate densities. Freeze-drying creates low-density foam microstructures. The compressive strengths of the structures follow the same trend as their density. CFs are critical in the denser structures, as without the fibers, the samples do not retain their shape while drying. The compressive strength and strain to failure of the composites progressively increase with increasing filler content, ranging between 0.8 and 16 MPa and 12%–47%, respectively, at densities of 0.51–1.00 g/cm3. The measured properties are comparable to other biobased composites and commercial plastic filaments for 3D-printing.  相似文献

The mechanical strength and modulus of chopped carbon fiber (CF)‐reinforced polybenzoxazine composites were investigated by changing the length of CFs. Tensile, compressive, and flexural properties were investigated. The void content was found to be higher for the short fiber composites. With increase in fiber length, tensile strength increased and optimized at around 17 mm fiber length whereas compressive strength exhibited a continuous diminution. The flexural strength too increased with fiber length and optimized at around 17 mm fiber length. The increase in strength of composites with fiber length is attributed to the enhancement in effective contact area of fibers with the matrix. The experimental results showed that there was about 350% increase in flexural strength and 470% increase in tensile strength of the composites with respect to the neat polybenzoxazine, while, compressive properties were adversely affected. The composites exhibited an optimum increase of about 800% in flexural modulus and 200% in tensile modulus. Enhancing the fiber length, leads to fiber entanglement in the composites, resulted in increased plastic deformation at higher strain. Multiple branch matrix shear, debonded fibers and voids were the failures visualized in the microscopic analyses. Defibrillation has been exhibited by all composites irrespective of fiber length. Fiber debonding and breaking were associated with short fibers whereas clustering and defibrillation were the major failure modes in long fiber composites. Increasing fiber loading improved the tensile and flexural properties until 50–60 wt% of fiber whereas the compressive property consistently decreased on fiber loading. The present work comparatively studied the modification effects of short carbon fiber (CF) on the mechanical properties and fretting wear behavior of ultra‐high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE)/CF composites. The interactions between CFs and UHMWPE interface were also investigated in detail. The results showed that, with the increase in fiber content, the compressive modulus and hardness of the composites increased, while its impact strength decreased. It was found that filling of CF can reduce the friction and wear of UHMWPE. In addition, the UHMWPE‐based composites reinforced with nitric acid‐treated CF exhibited better mechanical properties, lower friction coefficient, and higher wear resistance than those of untreated UHMWPE/CF composites. This was attributed to the improvement of interfacial adhesion and compatibility between CF and UHMWPE matrix caused by surface chemical modification of CF. In this paper, novel poly(phthalazione ether sulfone ketone) (PPESK) and its composites reinforced with carbon fibers (CFs) were prepared, and their tribological behaviors in pure and sea water were comparatively investigated. Affected by the noncoplanar twisted aromatic structure in the molecular skeleton, the aggregation of the macromolecular chain in PPESK was amorphous, resulting in very high water absorption of PPESK matrix. The invading water molecules led to a sharp decrease in the hardness of PPESK surface, resulting in very high wear rate of PPESK in water. Although CF/PPESK composites had higher water absorption than pure PPESK, their wear processes in water were no longer dominated by high water absorption but by the load‐carrying effect of CFs, ascribed to the good CF/PPESK interfacial adhesion. Therefore, CF/PPESK composites exhibited very low wear rates in the order of 10?7 mm3/Nm in water, which decreased with the CF content increasing until the content of CFs reached 50%. The results revealed that the most critical factor determining the wear behavior of a fiber‐reinforced polymer composite sliding in water is the fiber/matrix interface but not the water absorption of the polymer matrix. In this study, the reinforcing mechanism of amine functionalized on carbon fibers (CFs) has been precisely discussed, and the differences between aliphatic and aromatic compounds have been illustrated. Polyacrylonitrile‐based CFs were functionalized with ethylenediamine, 4,4‐diaminodiphenyl sulphone, and p‐aminobenzoic acid (PAB), and CF‐reinforced epoxy composites were prepared. The structural and surface characteristics of the functionalized CFs were investigated using X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT‐IR), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Mechanical properties in terms of tensile and flexural strengths and moduli were studied. The FT‐IR results confirm the success in bonding amines on the CF surface. After treatment of CFs, the oxygen and nitrogen contents as well as the N/C ratio showed an increase. XPS results provided evidence of the chemical reaction during functionalization, rather than being physically coated on the CF surface. Chemical modification of CF with diamines led to considerable enhancement in compatibility of CF filaments and epoxy resin, and remarkable improvements were seen in both tensile and flexural properties of the reinforced composites. SEM micrographs also confirmed the improvement of interface adhesion between the modified CFs and epoxy matrix. Finally, it can be concluded that PAB is a promising candidate to functionalize CF in order to improve interfacial properties of CF/epoxy composites. To prevent the loss of fiber strength, ultrahigh‐molecular‐weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) fibers were treated with an ultraviolet radiation technique combined with a corona‐discharge treatment. The physical and chemical changes in the fiber surface were examined with scanning electron microscopy and Fourier transform infrared/attenuated total reflectance. The gel contents of the fibers were measured by a standard device. The mechanical properties of the treated fibers and the interfacial adhesion properties of UHMWPE‐fiber‐reinforced vinyl ester resin composites were investigated with tensile testing. After 20 min or so of ultraviolet radiation based on 6‐kW corona treatment, the T‐peel strength of the treated UHMWPE‐fiber composite was one to two times greater than that of the as‐received UHMWPE‐fiber composite, whereas the tensile strength of the treated UHMWPE fibers was still up to 3.5 GPa. The integrated mechanical properties of the treated UHMWPE fibers were also optimum. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part B: Polym Phys 42: 463–472, 2004  相似文献

A silane coupling agent, γ‐methacryloxypropyltrimethoxysilane, for the surface modification of glass fibers was varied between 0.1 and 0.8 wt %. To understand the role of interfacial adhesion of glass fiber/unsaturated polyester composites, contact angles of the silane‐treated glass fibers were measured by the wicking method on the basis of the modified Washburn equation with deionized water, diiodomethane, and ethylene glycol as testing liquids. As a result, silane‐treated glass fibers led to increased surface free energy, mainly because of their increased specific or polar component. The mechanical interfacial behaviors based on the interlaminar shear strength (ILSS) of the composites determined by short‐beam tests and the critical stress‐intensity factor (KIC) were also improved in the case of silane‐treated composites. The surface free energy and the mechanical interfacial properties especially showed the maximum value in the presence of 0.4 wt % silane coupling agent. It revealed that the increase of a specific component of the surface free energy or hydrogen bonding between the glass fibers and the coupling agents plays an important role in improving the degree of adhesion at interfaces in a composite system. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. New type of electrically conductive polymeric composites was prepared using ethylene-vinylacetate (EVA) matrix filled with silver-coated wollastonite (W-Ag) fibers. The electrical, mechanical and adhesive properties of the composites are reported in this paper. The electrical percolation threshold was found about 8 vol.% and the highly electrical conductivity value (1.8 × 105 S m−1) is reached for 29 vol.% of filler fraction. The mechanical and adhesive properties of these composites were also discussed and correlated with some models.  相似文献

The aim of the last part of this general study is to analyze the influence of the interfacial properties and, more precisely, the adhesion energy, between carbon fibers and PEEK on the final performance of unidirectional composites. A set of mechanical properties, i.e. interlaminar shear strength, longitudinal tensile and compressive and transverse tensile properties, of different unidirectional laminates with the same content (60% by volume) of carbon fibers is determined. It is first shown that the interlaminar shear strength is constant, whatever the type of materials. Therefore, this test is not appropriate to characterize the strength of the fiber–matrix interface in PEEK-based composites. On the contrary, in agreement with previous work on other systems, it appears that the ultimate properties (longitudinal tensile and compressive as well as transverse tensile strengths and strains) of the laminates increase with the interfacial adhesion energy, whereas the stiffness of these composites remains unaffected in all cases.  相似文献

The thermal and electrical conductivity and mechanical properties of polyetherimide (PEI) containing either alkyl‐aminated (enGO) or phenyl‐aminated graphene (pnGO) oxides were studied. A solution casting method was used to prepare functionalized graphene oxide/PEI composites with different filler contents. The introduction of functionalized graphene oxide to the PEI matrix improved the thermal conductivity, electrical conductivity, and mechanical properties. The thermal conductivities of the enGO 3 wt%/PEI and pnGO 3 wt%/PEI composites were 0.324 W/mK and 0.329 W/mK, respectively, due to the high thermal conductivity of the graphene‐based materials and the strong interface adhesion due to the filler surface treatment between the fillers and the matrix. The electrical conductivities of the functionalized graphene oxide/PEI composites were larger than that of PEI, but the electrical conductivity values were generally low, which is consistent with the magnitude of the insulator. The strong interfacial adhesion between the fillers and the matrix led to improved mechanical properties. Copyright © 2014 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) was melt blended with linear low density polyethylene (LLDPE) and subsequently compounded with glass fibers (GF) as reinforcements at percentages ranging from 15 to 45 wt% of LLDPE and 5 to 30 wt% of GF. Thermal, morphological, and mechanical properties of the prepared composites were investigated. It was found that compounding PET/LLDPE blends with GF would be beneficial in producing composites that are thermally stable with good mechanical properties. For example, the impact strength of the composites containing 85/15 wt% (PET/LLDPE) at relatively high loading of GF, ie, from 15 to 30 wt%, was higher than that of the GF‐reinforced neat PET. When increasing the percentage of LLDPE in the composites, the impact strength increased with increasing GF content, and this was also better than that of GF‐reinforced PET whose impact strength drastically decreased upon increasing the GF%. The improvement in mechanical properties of the composite, we suggest, should be correlated with the morphologies of the composites where the visualized interface adhesion tended to be better at higher loadings of both LLDPE and GF.  相似文献

In the present research, a multifunctional hierarchical reinforcement was prepared by chemical modification of carbon fibers (CFs) with halloysite nanotubes (HNTs) by the bridging diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid (DTPA) for improving interfacial microstructures and properties of composites. Surface structures and groups of modified HNTs and CFs were characterized systematically. The uniform distributions of the introduced DTPA and HNTs helped to increase fiber polarity, surface energy, and wettability. As a consequence, significant enhancements of interfacial properties and hydrothermal aging resistance of composites were achieved, and interfacial reinforcing mechanisms have also been studied. Moreover, the storage modulus showed a 17.95% improvement, and the glass transition temperature was enhanced by 17°C by dynamic mechanical analysis testing.  相似文献

Wood fiber–reinforced ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene (wood fiber/UHMWPE) composites have been filled with acid‐treated clay to enhance the adhesion. According to the modification, the interlaminar shear strength of composites has been greatly improved. X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy are used to examine the microscopic properties of resultant composites. The enhanced interlaminar shear strength is attributed to the clay interlock, which improves the wetting between wood fibers and resins.  相似文献
