In the present paper the effect of the presence of Na2CO3 on the etching characteristics of NaOH has been presented quantitatively. Six CR-39 detectors were etched at 50, 60 and in 6 M NaOH solutions containing 0%, 1%, 2%, 3%, 4% and 5% concentration of Na2CO3. Etching was performed in 22 steps of 5–10 min starting from 15 min up to 210 min. These detectors were previously exposed to 252Cf source. Lengths of 35 randomly selected fission fragment tracks were measured after each etching time interval. Similarly, diameters of 25 randomly selected fission fragments having 90 incidence angle were also measured as mentioned above. Track etch rate, bulk etch rate, etching efficiency and activation energies of both track as well as bulk etching have been determined.  相似文献

The etch pit diameters of soda glass detector samples exposed to 54 132 Xe-ions of different energies are measured for different etching times after etching the detector in a ‘new etchant’ free of the adverse effect of the etch product layer. The dependence of track diameter on the energy and on the energy loss, dE/dx of 54 132 Xe-ion in soda glass has been presented. The energy resolution of soda glass and the critical angle for etching of fission fragment tracks in glass detectors have also been determined. The maximum etched track length of 54 132 Xe-ion in soda glass has been compared with the theoretical range. The effects of different annealing conditions on bulk etch rate of glass detector and on diameters of 54 132 Xe-ion tracks have been presented. Experimental results show that there is a decrease in track etch rate, etching efficiency and etchable range of 54 132 Xe-ions with annealing. The annealing of oblique tracks shows that the vertical tracks are more stable than the oblique tracks.  相似文献

The etching conditions of an indigenously prepared thin film of pentaerythritol tetrakis(allyl carbonate) (PETAC) were standardised for the use as a nuclear track detector. The optimum etching times in 6?N NaOH at 70°C for the appearance of fission and alpha tracks recorded in this detector from a 252Cf solid source were found to be 30 min and 1.50?h, respectively. The experimentally determined values for the bulk and track-etch rates for this detector in 6?N NaOH at 70°C were found to be 1.7?±?0.1 and 88.4?±?10.7?µm/h, respectively. From these results, the important track etching properties such as the critical angle of etching, the sensitivity and the fission track registration efficiency were calculated and compared with the commercially available detectors. The activation energy value for bulk etching calculated by applying Arrhenius equation to the bulk etch rates of the detector determined at different etching temperatures was found to be 0.86?±?0.02?eV. This compares very well with the value of about 1.0?eV reported for most commonly used track detectors. The effects of gamma irradiation on this new detector in the dose range of 200–1000?kGy have also been studied using bulk etch rate technique. The activation energy values for bulk etching calculated from bulk etch rates measurements at different temperatures were found to decrease with the increase in gamma dose indicating scission of the detector due to gamma irradiation. The optical band gap of this detector was also determined using UV–visible spectrometry and the value was found to be 4.37?±?0.05?eV.  相似文献

An experimental study of the mechanism for chemical etching of fission fragment tracks in the natural mineral fluorite is described. A systematic search showed that a 3:1 mixture by volume of sulphuric to hydrochloric acids was a most appropriate etchant. Experiments directed at determining the etching efficiency as a function of solvent temperature are also discussed. The preferential track etch ratioVt/Vg, the track length and the track density all depend upon the time and temperature of annealing.

It is variations of the fission track density in fluorite, with etching time and annealing temperature, which make possible an overall geophysical interpretation of annealing data for the mineral in terms of the paleoisotherm of its intrinsic fission track clock.

An interactive image analysis system INTIMAN, assembled for the swift and automatic readout of fission fragment track measurements, in both crystalline and non-crystalline materials, is described. Normal procedures for measuring and analyzing tracks are outlined.  相似文献

Sample of cellulose nitrate (Russian) is exposed to 18 40 Ar ions. The bulk etch rate has been studied at different etching temperatures and the activation energy for bulk etch rate has been calculated. The etched track lengths are measured for different etching times. The energy loss rate and range of 18 40 Ar ions in CN(R) is also calculated. The critical threshold value for etchable track in CN(R) is determined by comparing the theoretical and experimental values of track length. The response curve of CN(R) is also presented.  相似文献

The fission cross section and fission probability of 197Au, induced by (1665 MeV) π-, have been studied using CR-39 track detectors. A 4π-geometry was used to count track statistics. A beam of negative pions of 1665 MeV was produced at AGS of Brookhaven National Laboratory, USA, and allowed to fall normally on the stack. Two detectors from the stack were scanned for fission fragment tracks after etching in 6N NaOH at 70℃. The statistics of fission fragment tracks in both detectors were obtained. It was found that there was a marked asymmetry of registered tracks with respect to the forward and backward hemispheres. This asymmetry could be partly accounted for on the basis of momentum transfer to the struck nucleus. On the basis of counting statistics fission cross section was measured, and fission probability was determined by dividing the fission cross section with the reaction cross section. The fission cross-section and fission probability were compared with the computed values using the cascade-exciton model code CEM95.  相似文献

Triafol-TN plastic detector foils have been irradiated with238U ions of energy 16.34 MeV/u and the tracks produced have been observed using the chemical etching technique. The bulk etch rate and track etch rate are determined under successive chemical etching. In our case, the validity of Arrhenius’s law is confirmed by the fact that the same value ofE a obtained for these different concentrations, within experimental errors. The results show a linear correlation between the measured track etch rate along the track and the corresponding total energy loss rate and a threshold value of ~ 5.0 MeV/(mg/cm2) for track registration was obtained. The maximum etched track length of238U-ion in triafol-TN has been compared with the theoretically computed range.  相似文献

As a frame work of the study for the latent track size measurement using atomic force microscope, we have measured the minute etch pits and the extremely small amount of bulk etch of CR-39 at the beginning of chemical etching, and obtained its growth curves in nanometer dimensions. The pieces of CR-39 were exposed to 6 MeV/nC and Fe ions with normal incidence angle and were etched in 70°C 7 N NaOH solution for 0.5,1,2,3,5 min. The diameters of latent track were estimated to be 17 nm for Fe ions and 8 nm for C ions, respectively. These values are comparable to the experimental data on the average ‘track core diameters’ that have been obtained by various experimental techniques.  相似文献

We present a new method in which both positive and negative pulses are used to etch silicon for fabrication of porous silicon (PS) monolayer. The optical thickness and morphology of PS monolayer fabricated with different negative pulse voltages are investigated by means of reflectance spectra, scanning electron microscopy and photoluminescence spectra. It is found that with this method the PS monolayer is thicker and more uniform. The micropores also appear to be more regular than those made by common positive pulse etching. This phenomenon is attributed to the vertical etching effect of the PS monolayer being strengthened while lateral etching process is restrained. The explanation we propose is that negative pulse can help the hydrogen cations (H^+) in the electrolyte move into the micropores of PS monolayer. These H^+ ions combine with the Si atoms on the wall of new-formed micropores, leading to formation of Si-H bonds. The formation of Silt bonds results in a hole depletion layer near the micropore wall surface, which decreases hole density on the surface, preventing the micropore wall from being eroded laterally by F^- anions. Therefore during the positive pulse period the etching reaction occurs exclusively only at the bottom of the micropores where lots of holes are provided by the anode.  相似文献

Heavy ion recording in dielectric isotropic detectors has a wide range of applications in uranium cartography or dating. In this study, solid state nuclear tracks detectors (SSNTDs) have been applied to localise neptunium-237, in vivo, by means of the neutron-induced fission cartography of neptunium-237 nuclei in organ sections. At the cellular level, a precise localisation can only be achieved with a good understanding of the etch pit evolution during the chemical etching process.

A tailor-made software for modelling the etching process has been developed to simulate the profile of an etched track produced by a neutron-induced fission fragment. This software is based on a model that considers the evolution of the track etching velocity along the damage trail in order to perfectly model the shape of the track.  相似文献

Atomic-scale etching of a clean Si surface by active oxidation with oxygen molecules was examined using ex-situ atomic force microscopy (AFM). The etch rate was directly determined by measuring the etch depth with AFM. A SiO2 anti-etching mask was used on a H-terminated Si(001)-2 × 1:H surface prepared by low pH HF treatment followed by annealing in H2. The etch rate under active oxidation conditions was almost proportional to the O2 pressure, which was consistent with previous reports. The etch rate exhibited a weak temperature dependence with an apparent activation energy of 0.2 eV. A distinct transition of the reaction mode from etching to oxide formation was observed in detail as an abrupt decrease of the etch rate by lowering the temperature near the boundary condition between the etching and oxide formation conditions.  相似文献

Track etch rate characteristics of CR-39 plastic detector exposed to 28Si ions of 670 MeV energy have been investigated. Experimental results were obtained in terms of frequency distribution of the track diameter, track density and bulk etching rate. A dependence of the mean track diameter on energy was found. The application of the radiation effect of heavy ions on CR-39 in the field of radiation detection and dosimetry are discussed. Results indicated that it is possible to produce etchable tracks of 28Si in this energy range in CR-39. We also report the etching characteristics of these tracks in the CR-39 detector.  相似文献

Swift heavy ion irradiation produces damage in polymers in the form of latent tracks. Latent tracks can be enlarged by etching it in a suitable etchant and thus nuclear track etch membrane can be formed for gas permeation / purification in particular for hydrogen where the molecular size is very small. By applying suitable and controlled etching conditions well defined tracks can be formed for specific applications of the membranes. After etching gas permeation method is used for characterizing the tracks. In the present work polycarbonate (PC) of various thickness were irradiated with energetic ion beam at Inter University Accelerator Centre (IUAC), New Delhi. Nuclear tracks were modified by etching the PC in 6N NaOH at 60 (±1) °C from both sides for different times to produce track etch membranes. At critical etch time the etched pits from both the sides meet a rapid increase in gas permeation was observed. Permeability of hydrogen and carbon dioxide has been measured in samples etched for different times. The latent tracks produced by SHI irradiation in the track etch membranes show enhancement of free volume of the polymer. Nano filters are separation devices for the mixture of gases, different ions in the solution and isotopes and isobars separations. The polymer thin films with controlled porosity finding it self as best choice. However, the permeability and selectivity of these polymer based membrane filters are very important at the nano scale separation. The Swift Heavy Ion (SHI) induced nuclear track etched polymeric films with controlled etching have been attempted and characterized as nano scale filters.   相似文献

This work presents a novel method for determining bulk etch rate of CR-39 during prolonged etching by masking the surface with a ferrofluidic film held in position by magnetostatic forces. The CR-39 etching conditions were 6.25 M NaOH solution for 24 h at temperatures ranging from 50 to 80 °C. After etching, the heights of the resulting un-etched plateaus were measured using a Talyscan 150 profilometer. The removed layer thicknesses ranged from 12 to 85 μm, giving corresponding bulk etch rates in the range 0.5–3.54 μm/h.  相似文献

In this work, we have studied the effect of the radiation damage caused by the incident particles on the activation energy of etching for CR-39 samples. The damage produced by the incident particle is expressed in terms of the linear energy transfer (LET). CR-39 samples from American Acrylic were irradiated to three different LET particles. These are N (LET200 = 20 KeV/μm) as a light particle, Fe (LET200 = 110 KeV/μm) as a medium particle and fission fragments (ff) from a 252Cf source as heavy particles. In general the bulk etch rate was calculated using the weight difference method and the track etch rate was determined using the track geometry at various temperatures (50–90 °C) and concentrations (4–9 N) of the NaOH etchant. The average activation energy Fb related to the bulk etch rate vb was calculated from ln vb vs. l/T. The average activation energy Et related to the track etch rate vt was estimated from ln vt vs. l/T. It is shown that activation energy of etching is a constant value for CR-39 detector where Et was found to be independent on the damage produced by the incident particle.  相似文献

Abstract

The effects of neutron, gamma and alpha radiations on the alpha and fission fragment tracks registration and revelation properties of CR-39 detectors (CR-39 and CR-39(DOP) were studied. It was found that the ratio of the bulk etch rate of irradiated to unirradiated (VG(irr.)/VG(unirr.) detectors is linearly dependent on dose. An exponential decrease in fission track densities with increase in neutron fluence was observed. The ratio of VG(irr.)/VG(unirr.) was found to be high in CR-39 than that in CR-39(DOP) exposed to the same reactor neutron fluence. The decrease in fission track densities with increase in neutron fluence was observed to be faster in CR-39 than in CR-39(DOP). This indicates that doping with dioctyl phthalate improves the radiation resistance of CR-39 detectors. It was observed that in detectors exposed to an alpha flux of the order of 9.36 × 106 / cm2, the fission track density was reduced by 11% and thereafter it remained constant. The results also indicate that thermal neutron fluence up to 7.01 ×1011 neutrons/cm2 does not affect the alpha and fission track densities. I.R. spectra were also studied to find out the nature of chemical changes produced by these radiations on CR-39.  相似文献

Equations for calculating track parameters have been proposed, which invariably involve the track etch rate Vt and the bulk etch rate Vb. The present study measured Vb for the LR115 solid-state nuclear track detector using atomic force microscopy (AFM). The detectors were partially masked using rubber cement and then etched in 2.5 N NaOH solution at 60°C for time periods ranging from 5 to 40 min. The rubber cement was then peeled off and cross-sectional images of the LR115 detectors were obtained by AFM. Vb has been found to have different values below and beyond the etching time of about 13.5 min, with the values of 0.0555 and 0.0875 μm min−1, respectively. The increase in Vb with the etching time can be explained by a diffusion-etch model, in which the additional damage of the detector material is due to those etchant ions diffused into the detector over time. Now that Vb has been determined, this can be combined with the track etch rate Vt to calculate track parameters.  相似文献

Fission probabilities induced by negative pions in Sn, Au and Bi at different energies using variety of nuclear track detectors have been studied. The target-detector assemblies in 4π-geometric configuration were irradiated at the AGS facility of Brookhaven National Laboratory, USA. After etching the exposed detectors at appropriate etching conditions the detectors have been scanned for the tracks of fission fragments produced as a result of interaction of pions with the target nuclei. Based on the track counts, the values of fission cross sections have been measured and fission probabilities have been calculated using the reaction cross-section calculated with the help of the cascade-exciton model code CEM95. The values of fission probability based on experimental fission cross-sections have been compared with the theoretically calculated values of fission probabilities obtained using the CEM95 code. Theoretical values of fission probability have been computed for incident pion energy up to 2500 MeV in Sn, Au and Bi for comparison to fission data for high energy negative pions at 500, 672, 1068, 1665 MeV and 2300 MeV energies for the same targets. The values of fission probability based on the experimental fission cross section and theoretically calculated values of fission probability have been compared. Reasonable agreement has been observed among the experimentally measured and theoretically computed values of fission probabilities. A saturation of probabilities has been observed for Au and Bi at higher energies, but for Sn an increase of probability with the increase of pion beam momentum up to 1665 MeV has been observed.  相似文献

Various studies have been performed to determine the response of Lexan polymer to gamma irradiations. The track recording properties of certain polymers are changed under the influence of electromagnetic radiations and environmental conditions. In the present work, the effect of gamma irradiation on the activation energies of bulk and track etching in case of Lexan samples have been investigated. The attempt has also been made to study the influence of temperature on the bulk and track etch rates of gamma irradiated polymer. The studies reveal an increase in the bulk and track etches rates with gamma-dose. However, the activation energy associated with track and bulk etch rates at a given temperature and at a constant concentration decreases with gamma-dose.  相似文献
