The “Projective Rank” of a compact connected irreducible Hermitian symmetric space M has been defined as the maximal complex dimension of the compact totally geodesic complex submanifolds having positive holomorphic bisectional curvature with the induced K?hler metric. We present a geometric way to compute this
invariant for the space M based on ideas developed in [1], [13] and [14]. As a consequence we obtain the following inequality relating the Projective Rank, Pr(M), the usual rank,rk(M), and the 2-number # (which is known to be equal to the Euler-Poincare characteristic in these spaces).

Let V be a simple Euclidean Jordan algebra with an associative inner product and let be the corresponding symmetric cone. Let be the compact symmetric space of all primitive idempotents of V. We show that the function s(a,b) defined by
is a (the automorphism group of )-invariant complete metric on and it coincides with a natural Finsler distance on We also show that the metric s(a,b) (strictly) contracts any (strict) conformal compression of .

We calculate explicitly the equivariant Ray-Singer torsion for all symmetric spaces of compact type with respect to the action of . We show that it equals zero except for the odd-dimensional Gra?mannians and the space . As a corollary, we classify up to diffeomorphism all isometries of these spaces which are homotopic to the identity; also,
we classify their quotients by finite group actions up to homeomorphism.

Summary. A novel geometric approach for three dimensional object segmentation is presented. The scheme is based on geometric deformable
surfaces moving towards the objects to be detected. We show that this model is related to the computation of surfaces of minimal
area (local minimal surfaces). The space where these surfaces are computed is induced from the three dimensional image in
which the objects are to be detected. The general approach also shows the relation between classical deformable surfaces obtained
via energy minimization and geometric ones derived from curvature flows in the surface evolution framework. The scheme is
stable, robust, and automatically handles changes in the surface topology during the deformation. Results related to existence,
uniqueness, stability, and correctness of the solution to this geometric deformable model are presented as well. Based on
an efficient numerical algorithm for surface evolution, we present a number of examples of object detection in real and synthetic
images.

Let be a compact connected Riemannian manifold with a metric of positive Ricci curvature. Let be a principal bundle over with compact connected structure group . If the fundamental group of is finite, we show that admits a invariant metric with positive Ricci curvature so that is a Riemannian submersion.

In this paper we consider the Dirichlet problem at infinity of proper harmonic maps from noncompact complex hyperbolic space
to a rank one symmetric space N of noncompact type with singular boundary data . Under some conditions on f, we show that the Dirichlet problem at infinity admits a harmonic map which assumes the boundary data f continuously.

We show that a solution of the Cauchy problem for the KdV equation,
has a drastic smoothing effect up to real analyticity if the initial data only have a single point singularity at x = 0. It is shown that for () data satisfying the condition
the solution is analytic in both space and time variable. The above condition allows us to take as initial data the Dirac
measure or the Cauchy principal value of 1/x. The argument is based on the recent progress on the well-posedness result by Bourgain [2] and Kenig-Ponce-Vega [20] and
a systematic use of the dilation generator .

Summary. In the course of working on the preconditioning of cubic collocation at Gauss points, one has to deal with the exponential
decay of certain cubic splines. Such results were obtained by Kim and Parter in the case of uniform spacing. In this paper
we extend these results to arbitrary grids and state its application to the preconditioned cubic collocation method.

We prove the completeness of an instanton moduli space on quaternion-K?hler manifold . A point in the boundary of the moduli represents an ASD bundle with a particular singular set. It is shown that the singular
set is a quaternion submanifold of and the Poincaré dual of the homology class represented by is the second Chern class o f the instanton bundle.

The tangent cones of an inner metric Alexandrov space with finite Hausdorff dimension and a lower curvature bound are always inner metric spaces with nonnegative curvature. In this paper we construct an infinite-dimensional inner metric Alexandrov
space of nonnegative curvature which has in one point a tangent cone whose metric is not an inner metric.

In contrast to all known examples, we show that in the case of minimal isometric immersions of into the smallest target dimension is almost never achieved by an -equivariant immersion. We also give new criteria for linear rigidity of a fixed minimal isometric immersion of into . The minimal isometric immersions arising from irreducible SU(2)-representations are linearly rigid within the moduli space of SU(2)-equivariant immersions. Hence the question arose whether they are still linearly rigid within the full moduli space. We
show that this is false by using our new criteria to construct an explicit SU(2)-equivariant immersion which is not linearly rigid. Various authors [GT], [To3], [W1] have shown that minimal isometric
immersions of higher isotropy order play an important role in the study of the moduli space of all minimal isometric immersions of into . Using a new necessary and sufficient condition for immersions of isotropy order , we derive a general existence theorem of such immersions.
