The theory of a vibrating-rod viscometer
The paper presents a complete theory for a viscometer based upon the principle of a circular-section rod, immersed in a fluid, performing transverse oscillations perpendicular to its axis. The theory is established as a result of a detailed analysis of the fluid flow around the rod and is subject to a number of criteria which subsequently constrain the design of an instrument. Using water as an example it is shown that a practical instrument can be designed so as to enable viscosity measurement with an accuracy of ±0.1%, although it is noted that many earlier instruments failed to satisfy one or more of the newly-established constraints.Nomenclature A, D constants in equation (46) - A m , B m , C m , D m constants in equations (50) and (51) - A j , B j constants in equation (14) - a j + , a j wavenumbers given by equation (15) - C f drag coefficient defined in equation (53) - c speed of sound - D b drag force of fluid b - D 0 coefficient of internal damping - E extensional modulus - f(z) initial deformation of rod - f(), F m () functions of defined in equation (41) - F force in the rod - force per unit length near t=0 - F dimensionless force per unit length near t=0 - g m amplitude of transient force - G modulus of rigidity - h, h* functions defined by equations (71) and (72) - H functions defined by equation (69) and (70) - I second moment of area - I 0,1, J 0,1, K 0,1 modified Bessel functions - k, k functions defined in equations (2) - L half-length of oscillator - Ma Mach number - m b added mass per unit length of fluid b - m s mass per unit length of solid - n j eigenvalue defined in equations (15) and (16) - R radius of rod - R c radius of container - r radial coordinate - T tension - T visc temperature rise due to heat generation by viscous dissipation - t time - v r , v radial and angular velocity components - y lateral displacement - y 0 initial lateral displacement - y 1, y 2 successive maximum lateral displacement - z axial coordinate - dimensionless tension - dimensionless mass of fluid - dimensionless drag of fluid - amplification factor - logarithmic decrement in a fluid - a , b logarithmic decrement in fluids a and b - 0 logarithmic decrement in vacuo - j logarithmic decrement in mode j in a fluid - spatial resolution of amplitude - v voltage resolution - r, , , s, , increments in R, , , s , , - dimensionless amplitude of oscillation - dimensionless axial coordinate - angular coordinate - f thermal conductivity of fluid - viscosity of fluid - viscosity of fluid calculated on assumption that * - a , b viscosity of fluids a and b - m constants in equation (10) - dimensionless displacement - j j the component of - density of fluid - a , b density of fluids a and b - s density of tube or rod material - dimensionless radial coordinate - * dimensionless radius of container - dimensionless times - spatial component of defined in equation (11) - j , tm jth, mth component of - dimensionless streamfunction - 0, 1 components of in series expansion in powers of - streamfunction - dimensionless frequency (based on ) - angular frequency - 0 angular frequency in absence of fluid and internal damping - j angular frequency in mode j in a fluid - a , b frequencies in fluids a and b

The objective of this paper is to present an overview of the fundamental equations governing transport phenomena in compressible reservoirs. A general mathematical model is presented for important thermo-mechanical processes operative in a reservoir. Such a formulation includes equations governing multiphase fluid (gas-water-hydrocarbon) flow, energy transport, and reservoir skeleton deformation. The model allows phase changes due to gas solubility. Furthermore, Terzaghi's concept of effective stress and stress-strain relations are incorporated into the general model. The functional relations among various model parameters which cause the nonlinearity of the system of equations are explained within the context of reservoir engineering principles. Simplified equations and appropriate boundary conditions have also been presented for various cases. It has been demonstrated that various well-known equations such as Jacob, Terzaghi, Buckley-Leverett, Richards, solute transport, black-oil, and Biot equations are simplifications of the compositional model.Notation List B reservoir thickness - B formation volume factor of phase - Ci mass of component i dissolved per total volume of solution - C i mass fraction of component i in phase - C heat capacity of phase at constant volume - Cp heat capacity of phase at constant pressure - D i hydrodynamic dispersion coefficient of component i in phase - DMTf thermal liquid diffusivity for fluid f - F = F(x, y, z, t) defines the boundary surface - fp fractional flow of phase - g gravitational acceleration - Hp enthalpy per unit mass of phase - Jp volumetric flux of phase - krf relative permeability to fluid f - k0 absolute permeability of the medium - Mp i mass of component i in phase - n porosity - N rate of accretion - Pf pressure in fluid f - pca capillary pressure between phases and =p-p - Ri rate of mass transfer of component i from phase to phase - Ri source source rate of component i within phase - S saturation of phase - s gas solubility - T temperature - t time - U displacement vector - u velocity in the x-direction - v velocity in the y-direction - V volume of phase - Vs velocity of soil solids - Wi body force in coordinate direction i - x horizontal coordinate - z vertical coordinate Greek Letters p volumetric coefficient of compressibility - T volumetric coefficient of thermal expansion - ij Kronecker delta - volumetric strain - m thermal conductivity of the whole matrix - internal energy per unit mass of phase - gf suction head - density of phase - ij tensor of total stresses - ij tensor of effective stresses - volumetric content of phase - f viscosity of fluid f

Summary The cooling of a hot fluid in laminar Newtonian flow through cooled elliptic tubes has been calculated theoretically. Numerical data have been computed for the two values 1.25 and 4 of the axial ratio of the elliptic cross-section . For =1.25 the influence of non-zero thermal resistance between outmost fluid layer and isothermal surroundings has also been investigated. Special attention has been given to the distribution of heat flux around the perimeter; when increases the flux varies more with the position at the circumference. This positional dependence becomes less pronounced, however, as the (position-independent) thermal resistance of the wall increases.Flattening of the conduit, while maintaining its cross-sectional area constant, improves the cooling. Comparison with rectangular pipes shows that this improvement is not as marked with elliptic as with rectangular pipes.Nomenclature A k =A m, n coefficients of expansion (6) - a, b half-axes of ellipse, b<a - a p =a r, s coefficients of representation (V) - D hydraulic diameter, = 4S/P; S = cross-sectional area, P = perimeter - D e equivalent diameter, according to (13) - n coordinate (outward) normal to the tube wall - T temperature of fluid - T i temperature of fluid at the inlet - T s temperature of surroundings - v 0 mean velocity of fluid - v z longitudinal velocity of fluid - x, y carthesian coordinates coinciding with axes of ellipse - z coordinate in flow direction - , dimensionless half-axes of ellipse, =a/D and =b/D - t heat transfer coefficient from fluid at bulk temperature to surroundings; equation (11) - w heat transfer coefficient at the wall; equation (3) - axial ratio of ellipse, = a/b = / - , , , dimensionless coordinates; =x/D, =y/D, =z/D, =n/D - dimensionless temperature, = (T–T s)/(T iT s) - 0 cup-mixing mean value of ; equation (10) - thermal conductivity of fluid - m,n = k eigenvalue - c volumetric heat capacity of fluid - m, n = k = k eigenfunction; equations (6) and (I) - Nu total Nusselt number, = t D/ - Nusselt number at large distance from the inlet - Nu w wall Nusselt number, = w D/, based on w - Pé Péclet number, = 0 Dc/  相似文献

Summary Let denote the congruence of null geodesics associated with a given optical observer inV 4. We prove that determines a unique collection of vector fieldsM() ( =1, 2, 3) and (0) overV 4, satisfying a weak version of Killing's conditions. This allows a natural interpretation of these fields as the infinitesimal generators of spatial rotations and temporal translation relative to the given observer. We prove also that the definition of the fieldsM() and (0) is mathematically equivalent to the choice of a distinguished affine parameter f along the curves of, playing the role of a retarded distance from the observer. The relation between f and other possible definitions of distance is discussed.

Summary A model has been developed for the flow of a non-Newtonian fluid past a porous sphere. The drag force exerted on a porous sphere moving in a power-law fluid is obtained by an approximate solution of equations of motion in the creeping flow regime. It is predicted that the effect of the pseudoplastic anomaly on the drag force is more pronounced at large porosity parameters.

Summary This paper is devoted to a study of the flow of a second-order fluid (flowing with a small mass rate of symmetrical radial outflow m, taken negative for a net radial inflow) over a finite rotating disc enclosed within a coaxial cylinderical casing. The effects of the second-order terms are observed to depend upon two dimensionless parameters 1 and 2. Maximum values 1 and 2 of the dimensionless radial distances at which there is no recirculation, for the cases of net radial outflow (m>0) and net radial inflow (m<0) respectively, decrease with an increase in the second-order effects [represented by T(=1+2)]. The velocities at 1 and 2 as well as at some other fixed radii have been calculated for different T and the associated phenomena of no-recirculation/recirculation discussed. The change in flow phenomena due to a reversal of the direction of net radial flow has also been studied. The moment on the rotating disc increases with T.Nomenclature , , z coordinates in a cylindrical polar system - z 0 distance between rotor and stator (gap length) - =/z 0, dimensionless radial distance - =z/z 0, dimensionless axial distance - s = s/z0, dimensionless disc radius - V =(u, v, w), velocity vector - dimensionless velocity components - uniform angular velocity of the rotor - , p fluid density and pressure - P =p/(2 z 02 2 , dimensionless pressure - 1, 2, 3 kinematic coefficients of Newtonian viscosity, elastico-viscosity and cross-viscosity respectively - 1, 2 2/z 0 2 , resp. 3/z 0 2 , dimensionless parameters representing the ratio of second-order and inertial effects - m = , mass rate of symmetrical radial outflow - l a number associated with induced circulatory flow - Rm =m/(z 01), Reynolds number of radial outflow - R l =l/(z 01), Reynolds number of induced circulatory flow - Rz =z 0 2 /1, Reynolds number based on the gap - 1, 2 maximum radii at which there is no recirculation for the cases Rm>0 and Rm<0 respectively - 1(T), 2(T) 1 and 2 for different T - U 1(T) (+) = dimensionless radial velocity, Rm>0 - V 1(T) (+) = , dimensionless transverse velocity, Rm>0 - U 2(T) (–) = , dimensionless radial velocity, Rm=–Rn<0, m=–n - V 2(T) (–) = , dimensionless transverse velocity, Rm<0 - C m moment coefficient

We report non-equilibrium molecular dynamics simulations of rigid and non-rigid dumbbell fluids to determine the contribution of internal degrees of freedom to strain-rate-dependent shear viscosity. The model adopted for non-rigid molecules is a modification of the finitely extensible nonlinear elastic (FENE) dumbbell commonly used in kinetic theories of polymer solutions. We consider model polymer melts — that is, fluids composed of rigid dumbbells and of FENE dumbbells. We report the steady-state stress tensor and the transient stress response to an applied Couerte strain field for several strain rates. We find that the rheological properties of the rigid and FENE dumbbells are qualitatively and quantitatively similar. (The only exception to this is the zero strain rate shear viscosity.) Except at high strain rates, the average conformation of the FENE dumbbells in a Couette strain field is found to be very similar to that of FENE dumbbells in the absence of strain. The theological properties of the two dumbbell fluids are compared to those of a corresponding fluid of spheres which is shown to be the most non-Newtonian of the three fluids considered.Symbol Definition b dimensionless time constant relating vibration to other forms of motion - F force on center of mass of dumbbell - F i force on bead i of dumbbell - F force between center of masses of dumbbells and - F ij force between beads i and j - h vector connecting bead to center of mass of dumbbell - H dimensionless spring constant for dumbbells, in units of / 2 - I moment of inertia of dumbbell - J general current induced by applied field - k B Boltzmann's constant - L angular momentum - m mass of bead, (= m/2) - M mass of dumbbell, g - N number of dumbbells in simulation cell - P translational momentum of center of mass of dumbbell - P pressure tensor - P xy xy component of pressure tensor - Q separation of beads in dumbbell - Q eq equilibrium extension of FENE dumbbell and fixed extension of rigid dumbbell - Q 0 maximum extension of dumbbell - r ij vector connecting beads i and j - r position vector of center of mass dumbbell - R vector connecting centers of mass of two dumbbells - t time - t * dimensionless time, in units of m/ - T * dimensionless temperature, in units of /k - u potential energy - u velocity vector of flow field - u x x component of velocity vector - V volume of simulation cell - X general applied field - strain rate, s–1 - * dimensionless shear rate, in units of /m 2 - general transport property - Lennard-Jones potential well depth - friction factor for Gaussian thermostat - shear viscosity, g/cms - * dimensionless shear viscosity, in units of m/ 2 - * dimensionless number density, in units of –3 - Lennard-Jones separation of minimum energy - relaxation time of a fluid - angular velocity of dumbbell - orientation angle of dumbbell

The study of the diffusion of a magnetic field into a moving conductor is of interest in connection with the production of ultra-high-strength magnetic fields by rapid compression of conducting shells [1,2]. In [3,4] it is shown that when a magnetic field in a plane slit is compressed at constant velocity, the entire flux enters the conductor. In the present paper we formulate a general result concerning the conservation of the sum current in the cavity and conductor for arbitrary motion of the latter. We also consider a special case of conductor motion when the flux in the cavity remains constant despite the finite conductivity of the material bounding the magnetic field.Notation 1, * flux which has diffused into the conductor - 2 flux in the cavity - 0 sum flux - r radius - r* cavity boundary - thickness of the skin layer - (r) delta function of r - t time - q intensity of the fluid sink - v velocity - flux which has diffused to a depth larger than r - x self-similar variable - dimensionless fraction of the flux which has diffused to a depth larger than r - * fraction of the flux which has diffused into the conductor - a conductivity - c electrodynamic constant - Rm magnetic Reynolds number - dimensionless parameter

The linear stability theory is used to study stability characteristics of laminar condensate film flow down an arbitrarily inclined wall. A critical Reynolds number exists above which disturbances will be amplified. The magnitude of the critical Reynolds number is in all practical situations so small that a laminar gravity-induced condensate film can be expected to be unstable. Several stabilizing effects are acting on the film flow; at an inclined wall these effects are due to surface tension, gravity and condensation mass transfer.

The steady periodic temperature distribution in an infinitely long solid cylinder crossed by an alternating current is evaluated. First, the time dependent and non-uniform power generated per unit volume by Joule effect within the cylinder is determined. Then, the dimensionless temperature distribution is obtained by analytical methods in steady periodic regime. Dimensionless tables which yield the amplitude and the phase of temperature oscillations both on the axis and on the surface of copper or nichrome cylindrical electric resistors are presented.

The unsteady natural convection boundary layer flow over a semi-infinite inclined plate is considered with the wall temperatureT w ,(x) (=T +ax n )varying as the power of the axial coordinate. The governing equations are solved by an implicit finite difference scheme of Crank-Nicolson type. Numerical results are obtained for different values of Prandtl number, Grashof number and n for different angles of inclination. The steadystate velocity and temperature profiles, local and average skin frictions and Nusselt numbers are shown graphically. The effects of the angle of inclination and exponent n on velocity and temperature profiles, skin friction and Nusselt number have been discussed. The velocity, temperature and Nusselt number of the present study are compared with the available results and a good agreement is found to exist between the two.

The paper presents an exact analysis of the dispersion of a passive contaminant in a viscous fluid flowing in a parallel plate channel driven by a uniform pressure gradient. The channel rotates about an axis perpendicular to its walls with a uniform angular velocity resulting in a secondary flow. Using a generalized dispersion model which is valid for all time, we evaluate the longitudinal dispersion coefficientsK i (i=1, 2, ...) as functions of time. It is shown thatK 1=0 andK 3,K 4, ... decay rapidly in comparison withK 2. ButK 2 decreases with increasing (the dimensionless rotation parameter) for values of upto approximately =2.2. ThereafterK 2 increases with further increase in and its value gets saturated for large values of (say, 500) and does not change any further with increase in . A physical explanation of this anomalous behaviour ofK 2 is given.

A solution is presented for incompressible non-Newtonian liquids of the one-dimensional stationary temperature field which arises due to heat dissipation between two concentric cylinders, the outer fixed and thermostated, the inner rotating at a constant angular velocity. The object of the study is to outline a simple procedure for determining the temperature rise of the liquid and, primarily, to ascertain the corrections of the consistent variables and D which enable the experimenter to rectify the rheogram on the basis of measurement of the shear stress and the angular velocity . The results obtained are summarized in graphical form as diagrams of the temperature and velocity fields and, to facilitate practical application of the correction procedure, in a table relating the dimensionless temperature function (, n, ) to the geometry , the flow behaviour index n, and the coefficient of temperature rise and showing the function (1) as well.List of symbols a radius of the inner cylinder - b radius of the outer cylinder - constant angular velocity of the inner cylinder - r* dimensionless radial coordinate r/b - * dimensionless angular velocity of the liquid - K fluid consistency index - n flow behaviour index - dimensionless temperature rise (T–T 0)/T 0 - T temperature of measured liquid (K) - T 0 temperature of the thermostated bath - Br Brinkman criterion - f thermal conductivity of liquid - C constant of integration - coefficient of sensitivity in consistency-temperature law - coefficient of sensitivity divided by flow behaviour index: /n - (r*) dimensionless temperature function - coefficient of temperature rise; =Br· - ratio of the radii of inner and outer cylinder - T(1) temperature on the inner wall of the outer cylinder, i.e. for r*=1 - outer cylinder wall thickness - coefficient of heat transfer - q heat flux - k overall heat transfer coefficient - h height of measured liquid - s thermal conductivity of the outer cylinder - (1) derivative of the dimensionless temperature function at point r*=1 - dimensionless heat transfer constant - i (r*) dimensional temperature function calculated for isothermal wall; T(1)=T 0 - dynamic viscosity - i () maximum value of the dimensionless temperature function - dimensionless symbol — ratio of C/C 0 - D rate of shear - shear stress - rate of shear (not considering dissipation) - shear stress (not considering dissipation) - D + rate of shear corrected for the inner cylinder temperature - + shear stress on the inner cylinder obtained by measurement on the rheometer used - j rate of shear on the inner cylinder for j-th measurement referred to a single constant temperature

The steady axisymmetrical laminar source flow of an incompressible conducting fluid between two circular parallel disks in the presence of a transverse magnetic field is analytically investigated. A solution is obtained by expanding the velocity and the pressure distribution in terms of a power series of 1/r. Velocity, induced magnetic field, pressure and shear stress distributions are determined and compared with the case of the hydrodynamic solution. Pressure is found to be a function of both r and z in the general case and the flow is not parallel. At high magnetic fields, the velocity distribution degenerates to a uniform core surrounded by a boundary layer near the disks.Nomenclature C f skin friction coefficient - H 0 impressed magnetic field - H r induced magnetic field in the radial direction, H r /H 0 - M Hartmann number, H 0 t(/)1/2 - P dimensionless static pressure, P*t 4/Q - P* static pressure - P 0 reference dimensionless pressure - Q source discharge - R outer radius of disks - Rm magnetic Reynolds number, Q/t - Re Reynolds number, Q/t - 2t channel width - u dimensionless radial component of the velocity, u*t 2/Q - u* radial component of the velocity - w dimensionless axial component of the velocity, w*t 2/Q - w* axial component of the velocity - z, r dimensionless axial and radial directions, z*/t and r*/t, respectively - z*, r* axial and radial direction, respectively - magnetic permeability - coefficient of kinematic viscosity - density - electrical conductivity - 2 LaPlacian operator in axisymmetrical cylindrical coordinates

Heat transfer in the flow of a conducting Fluid between two non-conducting porous disks (—one is rotating and other is stationary) in the presence of a transverse uniform magnetic field and under uniform suction, is studied. Asymptotic solutions are obtained for R«M 2. The rate of Heat flux from the disks and the temperature distribution are investigated. It is observed that the temperature distribution and heat flux increase with the increase of magnetic field.Nomenclature B 0 imposed magnetic field - density of the fluid - velocity vector - p pressure - viscosity of the fluid - kinematic viscosity of the fluid - J r radial component of current density - J azimuthal component of current density - J z axial component of current density - m magnetic permeability - electrical conductivity of the fluid - U suction velocity - E r radial component of electric field - E azimuthal component of electric field - E z axial component of electric field - c p specific heat at constant pressure - angular velocity of the rotating disk - u radial component of velocity - v azimuthal component of velocity - w axial component of velocity - F() dimensionless function defined in (17) - G() dimensionless function defined in (17) - () dimensionless function defined in (18) - () dimensionless function defined in (18) - dimensionless axial distance - R suction Reynolds number, Uh/ - R 1 rotation Reynolds number, h 2/ - M Hartmann number, B 0 h(/)1/2 - P Prandtl number, c p /R - = 2R 1 2 /R 2 - dimensionless quantity - N Perturbation parameter, M 2/R - k Co-efficient of thermal conductivity - s Dimensionless quantity defined in (30) as . - E Dimensionless quantity defined as . - X Dimensionless quantity defined as . - K Constant defined in (22)  相似文献

Summary The problem of flow development from an initially flat velocity profile in the plane Poiseuille and Couette flow geometry is investigated for a viscous fluid. The basic governing momentum and continuity equations are expressed in finite difference form and solved numerically on a high speed digital computer for a mesh network superimposed on the flow field. Results are obtained for the variations of velocity, pressure and resistance coefficient throughout the development region. A characteristic development length is defined and evaluated for both types of flow.Nomenclature h width of channel - L ratio of development length to channel width - p fluid pressure - p 0 pressure at channel mouth - P dimensionless pressure, p/ 2 - P 0 dimensionless pressure at channel mouth - P pressure defect, P 0P - (P)0 pressure defect neglecting inertia - Re Reynolds number, uh/ - u fluid velocity in x-direction - mean u velocity across channel - u 0 wall velocity - U dimensionles u velocity u/ - U c dimensionless centreline velocity - U 0 dimensionless wall velocity - v fluid velocity in y-direction - V dimensionless v velocity, hv/ - x coordinate along channel - X dimensionless x-coordinate, x/h 2 - y coordinate across channel - Y dimensionless y-coordinate, y/h - resistance coefficient, - 0 resistance coefficient neglecting inertia - fluid density - fluid viscosity
