In this paper we study solutions of an inverse problem for a global shallow water model controlling its initial conditions specified from the 40‐yr ECMWF Re‐analysis (ERA‐40) data sets, in the presence of full or incomplete observations being assimilated in a time interval (window of assimilation) with or without background error covariance terms. As an extension of the work by Chen et al. (Int. J. Numer. Meth. Fluids 2009), we attempt to obtain a reduced order model of the above inverse problem, based on proper orthogonal decomposition (POD), referred to as POD 4D‐Var for a finite volume global shallow water equation model based on the Lin–Rood flux‐form semi‐Lagrangian semi‐implicit time integration scheme. Different approaches of POD implementation for the reduced inverse problem are compared, including a dual‐weighted method for snapshot selection coupled with a trust‐region POD adaptivity approach. Numerical results with various observational densities and background error covariance operator are also presented. The POD 4‐D Var model results combined with the trust‐region adaptivity exhibit similarity in terms of various error metrics to the full 4D Var results, but are obtained using a significantly lesser number of minimization iterations and require lesser CPU time. Based on our previous and current work, we conclude that POD 4‐D Var certainly warrants further studies, with promising potential of its extension to operational 3‐D numerical weather prediction models. A principal interval decomposition (PID) approach is presented for the reduced‐order modeling of unsteady Boussinesq equations. The PID method optimizes the lengths of the time windows over which proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) is performed and can be highly effective in building reduced‐order models for convective problems. The performance of these POD models with and without using the PID approach is investigated by applying these methods to the unsteady lock‐exchange flow problem. This benchmark problem exhibits a strong shear flow induced by a temperature jump and results in the Kelvin–Helmholtz instability. This problem is considered a challenging benchmark problem for the development of reduced‐order models. The reference solutions are obtained by direct numerical simulations of the vorticity and temperature transport equations using a compact fourth‐order‐accurate scheme. We compare the accuracy of reduced‐order models developed with different numbers of POD basis functions and different numbers of principal intervals. A linear interpolation model is constructed to obtain basis functions when varying physical parameters. The predictive performance of our models is then analyzed over a wide range of Reynolds numbers. It is shown that the PID approach provides a significant improvement in accuracy over the standard Galerkin POD reduced‐order model. This numerical assessment of the PID shows that it may represent a reliable model reduction tool for convection‐dominated, unsteady‐flow problems. Copyright © 2015 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

A proper orthogonal decomposition (POD)‐based reduced‐order model of the parabolized Navier–Stokes (PNS) equations is derived in this article. A space‐marching finite difference method with time relaxation is used to obtain the solution of this problem, from which snapshots are obtained to generate the POD basis functions used to construct the reduced‐order model. In order to improve the accuracy and the stability of the reduced‐order model in the presence of a high Reynolds number, we applied a Sobolev H1 norm calibration to the POD construction process. Finally, some numerical tests with a high‐fidelity model as well as the POD reduced‐order model were carried out to demonstrate the efficiency and the accuracy of the reduced‐order model for solving the PNS equations compared with the full PNS model. Different inflow conditions and different selections of snapshots were experimented to test the POD reduction technique. The efficiency of the H1 norm POD calibration is illustrated for the PNS model with increasingly higher Reynolds numbers, along with the optimal dissipation coefficient derivation, yielding the best root mean square error and correlation coefficient between the full and reduced‐order PNS models. We present a new non‐intrusive model reduction method for the Navier–Stokes equations. The method replaces the traditional approach of projecting the equations onto the reduced space with a radial basis function (RBF) multi‐dimensional interpolation. The main point of this method is to construct a number of multi‐dimensional interpolation functions using the RBF scatter multi‐dimensional interpolation method. The interpolation functions are used to calculate POD coefficients at each time step from POD coefficients at earlier time steps. The advantage of this method is that it does not require modifications to the source code (which would otherwise be very cumbersome), as it is independent of the governing equations of the system. Another advantage of this method is that it avoids the stability problem of POD/Galerkin. The novelty of this work lies in the application of RBF interpolation and POD to construct the reduced‐order model for the Navier–Stokes equations. Another novelty is the verification and validation of numerical examples (a lock exchange problem and a flow past a cylinder problem) using unstructured adaptive finite element ocean model. The results obtained show that CPU times are reduced by several orders of magnitude whilst the accuracy is maintained in comparison with the corresponding high‐fidelity models. A novel proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) model has been developed for use with an advanced unstructured mesh finite‐element ocean model, the Imperial College Ocean Model (ICOM, described in detail below), which includes many recent developments in ocean modelling and numerical analysis. The advantages of the POD model developed here over existing POD approaches are the ability:
  • 1. To increase accuracy when representing geostrophic balance (the balance between the Coriolis terms and the pressure gradient). This is achieved through the use of two sets of geostrophic basis functions where each one is calculated by basis functions for velocities u and v.
  • 2. To speed up the POD simulation. To achieve this a new numerical technique is introduced, whereby a time‐dependent matrix in the discretized equation is rapidly constructed from a series of time‐independent matrices. This development imparts considerable efficiency gains over the often‐used alternative of calculating each finite element over the computational domain at each time level.
  • 3. To use dynamically adaptive meshes in the above POD model.

A finite point method for solving compressible flow problems involving moving boundaries and adaptivity is presented. The numerical methodology is based on an upwind‐biased discretization of the Euler equations, written in arbitrary Lagrangian–Eulerian form and integrated in time by means of a dual‐time steeping technique. In order to exploit the meshless potential of the method, a domain deformation approach based on the spring network analogy is implemented, and h‐adaptivity is also employed in the computations. Typical movable boundary problems in transonic flow regime are solved to assess the performance of the proposed technique. In addition, an application to a fluid–structure interaction problem involving static aeroelasticity illustrates the capability of the method to deal with practical engineering analyses. Model order reduction of the two‐dimensional Burgers equation is investigated. The mathematical formulation of POD/discrete empirical interpolation method (DEIM)‐reduced order model (ROM) is derived based on the Galerkin projection and DEIM from the existing high fidelity‐implicit finite‐difference full model. For validation, we numerically compared the POD ROM, POD/DEIM, and the full model in two cases of Re = 100 and Re = 1000, respectively. We found that the POD/DEIM ROM leads to a speed‐up of CPU time by a factor of O(10). The computational stability of POD/DEIM ROM is maintained by means of a careful selection of POD modes and the DEIM interpolation points. The solution of POD/DEIM in the case of Re = 1000 has an accuracy with error O(10?3) versus O(10?4) in the case of Re = 100 when compared with the high fidelity model. For this turbulent flow, a closure model consisting of a Tikhonov regularization is carried out in order to recover the missing information and is developed to account for the small‐scale dissipation effect of the truncated POD modes. It is shown that the computational results of this calibrated ROM exhibit considerable agreement with the high fidelity model, which implies the efficiency of the closure model used. An adaptive spectral/hp discontinuous Galerkin method for the two‐dimensional shallow water equations is presented. The model uses an orthogonal modal basis of arbitrary polynomial order p defined on unstructured, possibly non‐conforming, triangular elements for the spatial discretization. Based on a simple error indicator constructed by the solutions of approximation order p and p?1, we allow both for the mesh size, h, and polynomial approximation order to dynamically change during the simulation. For the h‐type refinement, the parent element is subdivided into four similar sibling elements. The time‐stepping is performed using a third‐order Runge–Kutta scheme. The performance of the hp‐adaptivity is illustrated for several test cases. It is found that for the case of smooth flows, p‐adaptivity is more efficient than h‐adaptivity with respect to degrees of freedom and computational time. The adjoint method can be used to identify uncertain parameters in large‐scale shallow water flow models. This requires the implementation of the adjoint model, which is a large programming effort. The work presented here is inverse modeling based on model reduction using proper orthogonal decomposition (POD). An ensemble of forward model simulations is used to determine the approximation of the covariance matrix of the model variability and the dominant eigenvectors of this matrix are used to define a model subspace. An approximate linear reduced model is obtained by projecting the original model onto this reduced subspace. Compared with the classical variational method, the adjoint of the tangent linear model is replaced by the adjoint of a linear reduced forward model. The minimization process is carried out in reduced subspace and hence reduces the computational costs. In this study, the POD‐based calibration approach has been implemented for the estimation of the depth values and the bottom friction coefficient in a large‐scale shallow sea model of the entire European continental shelf with approximately 106 operational grid points. A number of calibration experiments is performed. The effectiveness of the algorithm is evaluated in terms of the accuracy of the final results as well as the computational costs required to produce these results. The results demonstrate that the POD calibration method with little computational effort and without the implementation of the adjoint code can be used to solve large‐scale inverse shallow water flow problems. Most existing meshing algorithms for a 2D or shell figure requires the figure to have exactly four sides. Generating structured grids in the n‐sided parametric region of a trimmed surface thus usually requires to first partition the region into four‐sided sub‐regions. We address the automatic structured grid generation problem in an n‐sided region by fitting a planar Gregory patch so that the partition requirement is naturally avoided. However, self‐overlapping may occur in some portions of the algebraically generated grid; this severely limits its usage in most of engineering and scientific applications where a grid system with no self‐intersecting is strictly required. To solve the problem, we use a functional optimization approach to move grid nodes in the u?v domain of the trimmed surface to eliminate the self‐overlapping. The derivatives of a Gregory patch, which are extremely difficult to compute analytically, are not required in our method. Thus, our optimization algorithm compares favourably at least in terms of speed with some other mesh optimization algorithms, such as the elliptic PDE method. In addition, to overcome the difficulty of guessing a good initial position of every grid node for the conjugate gradient method, a progressive optimization algorithm is incorporated in our optimization. In this paper, we propose a new evolve‐then‐filter reduced order model (EF‐ROM). This is a regularized ROM (Reg‐ROM), which aims to add numerical stabilization to proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) ROMs for convection‐dominated flows. We also consider the Leray ROM (L‐ROM). These two Reg‐ROMs use explicit ROM spatial filtering to smooth (regularize) various terms in the ROMs. Two spatial filters are used: a POD projection onto a POD subspace (Proj) and a POD differential filter (DF). The four Reg‐ROM/filter combinations are tested in the numerical simulation of the three‐dimensional flow past a circular cylinder at a Reynolds number Re=1000. Overall, the most accurate Reg‐ROM/filter combination is EF‐ROM‐DF. Furthermore, the spatial filter has a higher impact on the Reg‐ROM than the regularization used. Indeed, the DF generally yields better results than Proj for both the EF‐ROM and L‐ROM. Finally, the CPU times of the four Reg‐ROM/filter combinations are orders of magnitude lower than the CPU time of the DNS. Copyright © 2017 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

Order reduction strategies aim to alleviate the computational burden of the four‐dimensional variational data assimilation by performing the optimization in a low‐order control space. The proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) approach to model reduction is used to identify a reduced‐order control space for a two‐dimensional global shallow water model. A reduced second‐order adjoint (SOA) model is developed and used to facilitate the implementation of a Hessian‐free truncated‐Newton (HFTN) minimization algorithm in the POD‐based space. The efficiency of the SOA/HFTN implementation is analysed by comparison with the quasi‐Newton BFGS and a nonlinear conjugate gradient algorithm. Several data assimilation experiments that differ only in the optimization algorithm employed are performed in the reduced control space. Numerical results indicate that first‐order derivative methods are effective during the initial stages of the assimilation; in the later stages, the use of second‐order derivative information is of benefit and HFTN provided significant CPU time savings when compared to the BFGS and CG algorithms. A comparison with data assimilation experiments in the full model space shows that with an appropriate selection of the basis functions the optimization in the POD space is able to provide accurate results at a reduced computational cost. The HFTN algorithm benefited most from the order reduction since computational savings were achieved both in the outer and inner iterations of the method. This paper presents a non‐intrusive reduced order model for general, dynamic partial differential equations. Based upon proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) and Smolyak sparse grid collocation, the method first projects the unknowns with full space and time coordinates onto a reduced POD basis. Then we introduce a new least squares fitting procedure to approximate the dynamical transition of the POD coefficients between subsequent time steps, taking only a set of full model solution snapshots as the training data during the construction. Thus, neither the physical details nor further numerical simulations of the original PDE model are required by this methodology, and the level of non‐intrusiveness is improved compared with existing reduced order models. Furthermore, we take adaptive measures to address the instability issue arising from reduced order iterations of the POD coefficients. This model can be applied to a wide range of physical and engineering scenarios, and we test it on a couple of problems in fluid dynamics. It is demonstrated that this reduced order approach captures the dominant features of the high‐fidelity models with reasonable accuracy while the computation complexity is reduced by several orders of magnitude. This paper is to continue our previous work Niu (Int. J. Numer. Meth. Fluids 2001; 36 :351–371) on solving a two‐fluid model for compressible liquid–gas flows using the AUSMDV scheme. We first propose a pressure–velocity‐based diffusion term originally derived from AUSMDV scheme Wada and Liou (SIAM J. Sci. Comput. 1997; 18 (3):633—657) to enhance its robustness. The scheme can be applied to gas and liquid fluids universally. We then employ the stratified flow model Chang and Liou (J. Comput. Physics 2007; 225 :240–873) for spatial discretization. By defining the fluids in different regions and introducing inter‐phasic force on cell boundary, the stratified flow model allows the conservation laws to be applied on each phase, and therefore, it is able to capture fluid discontinuities, such as the fluid interfaces and shock waves, accurately. Several benchmark tests are studied, including the Ransom's Faucet problem, 1D air–water shock tube problems, 2D shock‐water column and 2D shock‐bubble interaction problems. The results indicate that the incorporation of the new dissipation into AUSM+‐up scheme and the stratified flow model is simple, accurate and robust enough for the compressible multi‐phase flows. We study in this paper a new data assimilation algorithm, called the back and forth nudging (BFN). This scheme has been very recently introduced for simplicity reasons, as it does not require any linearization, or adjoint equation, or minimization process in comparison with variational schemes, but nevertheless it provides a new estimation of the initial condition at each iteration. We study its convergence properties as well as efficiency on a 2D shallow water model. All along the numerical experiments, comparisons with the standard variational algorithm (called 4D‐VAR) are performed. Finally, a hybrid method is introduced, by considering a few iterations of the BFN algorithm as a preprocessing tool for the 4D‐VAR algorithm. We show that the BFN algorithm is extremely powerful in the very first iterations and also that the hybrid method can both improve notably the quality of the identified initial condition by the 4D‐VAR scheme and reduce the number of iterations needed to achieve convergence. In developing a 3D or laterally averaged 2D model for free‐surface flows using the finite difference method, the water depth is generally discretized either with the z‐co‐ordinate (z‐levels) or a transformed co‐ordinate (e.g. the so‐called σ‐co‐ordinate or σ‐levels). In a z‐level model, the water depth is discretized without any transformation, while in a σ‐level model, the water depth is discretized after a so‐called σ‐transformation that converts the water column to a unit, so that the free surface will be 0 (or 1) and the bottom will be ‐1 (or 0) in the stretched co‐ordinate system. Both discretization methods have their own advantages and drawbacks. It is generally not conclusive that one discretization method always works better than the other. The biggest problem for the z‐level model normally stems from the fact that it cannot fit the topography properly, while a σ‐level model does not have this kind of a topography‐fitting problem. To solve the topography‐fitting problem in a laterally averaged, 2D model using z‐levels, a piecewise linear bottom is proposed in this paper. Since the resulting computational cells are not necessarily rectangular looking at the xz plane, flux‐based finite difference equations are used in the model to solve the governing equations. In addition to the piecewise linear bottom, the model can also be run with full cells or partial cells (both full cell and partial cell options yield a staircase bottom that does not fit the real bottom topography). Two frictionless wave cases were chosen to evaluate the responses of the model to different treatments of the topography. One wave case is a boundary value problem, while the other is an initial value problem. To verify that the piecewise linear bottom does not cause increased diffusions for areas with steep bottom slopes, a barotropic case in a symmetric triangular basin was tested. The model was also applied to a real estuary using various topography treatments. The model results demonstrate that fitting the topography is important for the initial value problem. This article presents a numerical model that enables to solve on unstructured triangular meshes and with a high order of accuracy, Riemann problems that appear when solving hyperbolic systems. For this purpose, we use a MUSCL‐like procedure in a ‘cell‐vertex’ finite‐volume framework. In the first part of this procedure, we devise a four‐state bi‐dimensional HLL solver (HLL‐2D). This solver is based upon the Riemann problem generated at the barycenter of a triangular cell, from the surrounding cell‐averages. A new three‐wave model makes it possible to solve this problem, approximately. A first‐order version of the bi‐dimensional Riemann solver is then generated for discretizing the full compressible Euler equations. In the second part of the MUSCL procedure, we develop a polynomial reconstruction that uses all the surrounding numerical data of a given point, to give at best third‐order accuracy. The resulting over determined system is solved by using a least‐square methodology. To enforce monotonicity conditions into the polynomial interpolation, we use and adapt the monotonicity‐preserving limiter, initially devised by Barth (AIAA Paper 90‐0013, 1990). Mean‐flow three‐dimensionalities affect both the turbulence level and the coherent flow structures in wall‐bounded shear flows. A tailor‐made flow configuration was designed to enable a thorough investigation of moderately and severely skewed channel flows. A unidirectional shear‐driven plane Couette flow was skewed by means of an imposed spanwise pressure gradient. Three different cases with 8°, 34°and 52°skewing were simulated numerically and the results compared with data from a purely two‐dimensional plane Couette flow. The resulting three‐dimensional flow field became statistically stationary and homogeneous in the streamwise and spanwise directions while the mean velocity vector V and the mean vorticity vector Ω remained parallel with the walls. Mean flow profiles were presented together with all components of the Reynolds stress tensor. The mean shear rate in the core region gradually increased with increasing skewing whereas the velocity fluctuations were enhanced in the spanwise direction and reduced in the streamwise direction. The Reynolds shear stress is known to be closely related to the coherent flow structures in the near‐wall region. The instantaneous and ensemble‐averaged flow structures were turned by the skewed mean flow. We demonstrated for the medium‐skewed case that the coherent structures should be examined in a coordinate system aligned with V to enable a sound interpretation of 3D effects. The conventional symmetry between Case 1 and Case 2 vortices was broken and Case 1 vortices turned out to be stronger than Case 2. This observation is in conflict with the common understanding on the basis of the spanwise (secondary) mean shear rate. A refined model was proposed to interpret the structure modifications in three‐dimensional wall‐flows. What matters is the orientation of the mean vorticity vector Ω relative to the vortex vorticity vector ω v, that is, the sign of Ω · ω v. Four‐dimensional variational data assimilation (4DVAR) is frequently used to improve model forecasting skills. This method improves a model consistency with available data by minimizing a cost function measuring the model–data misfit with respect to some model inputs and parameters. Associated with this type of method, however, are difficulties related to the coding of the adjoint model, which is needed to compute the gradient of the 4DVAR cost function. Proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) is a model reduction method that can be used to approximate the gradient calculation in 4DVAR. In this work, two ways of using POD in 4DVAR are presented, namely model‐reduced 4DVAR and reduced adjoint 4DVAR (RA‐4DVAR). Both techniques employ POD to obtain a reduced‐order approximation of the forward linear tangent operator. The difference between the two methods lies in the treatment of the forward model. Model‐reduced 4DVAR performs minimization entirely in the POD‐reduced space, thereby achieving very low computational costs, but sacrificing accuracy of the end result. On the other hand, the RA‐4DVAR uses POD to approximate only the adjoint model. The main contribution of this study is a comparative performance analysis of these 4DVAR methodologies on a nonlinear finite element shallow water model. The sensitivity of the methods to perturbations in observations and the number of observation points is examined. The results from twin experiments suggest that the RA‐4DVAR method is easy to implement and computationally efficient and provides a robust approach for achieving reasonable results in the context of variational data assimilation.
