We present a facile approach to encapsulate functional porous organic cages (POCs) into a robust MOF by an incipient‐wetness impregnation method. Porous cucurbit[6]uril (CB6) cages with high CO2 affinity were successfully encapsulated into the nanospace of Cr‐based MIL‐101 while retaining the crystal framework, morphology, and high stability of MIL‐101. The encapsulated CB6 amount is controllable. Importantly, as the CB6 molecule with intrinsic micropores is smaller than the inner mesopores of MIL‐101, more affinity sites for CO2 are created in the resulting CB6@MIL‐101 composites, leading to enhanced CO2 uptake capacity and CO2/N2, CO2/CH4 separation performance at low pressures. This POC@MOF encapsulation strategy provides a facile route to introduce functional POCs into stable MOFs for various potential applications.

Porous liquids are a type of porous materials that engineer permanent porosity into unique flowing liquids, exhibiting promising functionalities for a variety of applications. Here a Type I porous liquid is synthesized by transforming porous organic cages into porous ionic liquids via a supramolecular complexation strategy. Simple physical mixing of 18‐crown‐6 with task‐specific anionic porous organic cages affords a porous ionic liquid with anionic porous organic cages as the anionic parts and 18‐crown‐6/potassium ion complexes as the cationic parts. In contrast, mixing of 15‐crown‐5 and anionic porous organic cages in a 2:1 ratio gives only solids, while the addition of excess 15‐crown‐5 affords a Type II porous liquid. The permanent porosity in the cage‐based porous liquids has been also confirmed by molecular simulation, positron (e+) annihilation lifetime spectroscopy, and enhanced gas sorption capacity compared with pure crown ethers.

We report a supramolecular strategy for promoting the selective reduction of O2 for direct electrosynthesis of H2O2. We utilized cobalt tetraphenylporphyrin (Co‐TPP), an oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) catalyst with highly variable product selectivity, as a building block to assemble the permanently porous supramolecular cage Co‐PB‐1(6) bearing six Co‐TPP subunits connected through twenty‐four imine bonds. Reduction of these imine linkers to amines yields the more flexible cage Co‐rPB‐1(6). Both Co‐PB‐1(6) and Co‐rPB‐1(6) cages produce 90–100 % H2O2 from electrochemical ORR catalysis in neutral pH water, whereas the Co‐TPP monomer gives a 50 % mixture of H2O2 and H2O. Bimolecular pathways have been implicated in facilitating H2O formation, therefore, we attribute this high H2O2 selectivity to site isolation of the discrete molecular units in each supramolecule. The ability to control reaction selectivity in supramolecular structures beyond traditional host–guest interactions offers new opportunities for designing such architectures for a broader range of catalytic applications.

Considering the rapidly rising CO2 level, there is a constant need for versatile materials which can selectively adsorb CO2 at low cost. The quest for efficient sorptive materials is still on since the practical applications of conventional porous materials possess certain limitations. In that context, we designed, synthesized, and characterized two novel supramolecular organic frameworks based on C‐pentylpyrogallol[4]arene (PgC5) with spacer molecules, such as 4,4′‐bipyridine (bpy). Highly optimized and symmetric intermolecular hydrogen‐bonding interactions between the main building blocks and comparatively weak van der Waals interactions between solvent molecules and PgC5 leads to the formation of robust extended frameworks, which withstand solvent evacuation from the crystal lattice. The evacuated framework shows excellent affinity for carbon dioxide over nitrogen and adsorbs ca. 3 wt % of CO2 at ambient temperature and pressure.

Size-selective hydroformylation of terminal alkenes was attained upon embedding a rhodium bisphosphine complex in a supramolecular metal–organic cage that was formed by subcomponent self-assembly. The catalyst was bound in the cage by a ligand-template approach, in which pyridyl–zinc(II) porphyrin interactions led to high association constants (>105 m −1) for the binding of the ligands and the corresponding rhodium complex. DFT calculations confirm that the second coordination sphere forces the encapsulated active species to adopt the ee coordination geometry (i.e., both phosphine ligands in equatorial positions), in line with in situ high-pressure IR studies of the host–guest complex. The window aperture of the cage decreases slightly upon binding the catalyst. As a result, the diffusion of larger substrates into the cage is slower compared to that of smaller substrates. Consequently, the encapsulated rhodium catalyst displays substrate selectivity, converting smaller substrates faster to the corresponding aldehydes. This selectivity bears a resemblance to an effect observed in nature, where enzymes are able to discriminate between substrates based on shape and size by embedding the active site deep inside the hydrophobic pocket of a bulky protein structure.

Favoring the CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) over the hydrogen evolution reaction and controlling the selectivity towards multicarbon products are currently major scientific challenges in sustainable energy research. It is known that the morphology of the catalyst can modulate catalytic activity and selectivity, yet this remains a relatively underexplored area in electrochemical CO2 reduction. Here, we exploit the material tunability afforded by colloidal chemistry to establish unambiguous structure/property relations between Cu nanocrystals and their behavior as electrocatalysts for CO2 reduction. Our study reveals a non‐monotonic size‐dependence of the selectivity in cube‐shaped copper nanocrystals. Among 24 nm, 44 nm and 63 nm cubes tested, the cubes with 44 nm edge length exhibited the highest selectivity towards CO2RR (80 %) and faradaic efficiency for ethylene (41 %). Statistical analysis of the surface atom density suggests the key role played by edge sites in CO2RR.

An organic semiconductor–bacteria biohybrid photosynthetic system is used to efficiently realize CO2 reduction to produce acetic acid with the non‐photosynthetic bacteria Moorella thermoacetica. Perylene diimide derivative (PDI) and poly(fluorene‐co‐phenylene) (PFP) were coated on the bacteria surface as photosensitizers to form a p‐n heterojunction (PFP/PDI) layer, affording higher hole/electron separation efficiency. The π‐conjugated semiconductors possess excellent light‐harvesting ability and biocompatibility, and the cationic side chains of organic semiconductors could intercalate into cell membranes, ensuring efficient electron transfer to bacteria. Moorella thermoacetica can thus harvest photoexcited electrons from the PFP/PDI heterojunction, driving the Wood–Ljungdahl pathway to synthesize acetic acid from CO2 under illumination. The efficiency of this organic biohybrid is about 1.6 %, which is comparable to those of reported inorganic biohybrid systems.

The manipulation of the second coordination sphere for improving the electrocatalytic CO2 reduction has led to breakthroughs with hydrogen bonding, local proton source, or electrostatic effects. We have developed two atropisomers of an iron porphyrin complex with two urea functions acting as multiple hydrogen-bonding tweezers to lock the metal-bound CO2 in a similar fashion found in the carbon monoxide dehydrogenase (CODH) enzyme. The αα topological isomer with the two urea groups on the same side of the porphyrin provides a stronger binding affinity to tether the incoming CO2 in comparison to the αβ disposition. However, the electrocatalytic activity of the αβ atropisomer outperforms its congener with one of the highest reported turnover frequencies at low overpotential. The strong H/D kinetic isotope effect (KIE) observed for the αα system indicates the existence of a tight water hydrogen-bonding network for proton delivery which is disrupted by addition of an acid source. The small H/D KIE for the αβ isomer and the enhanced electrocatalytic performance on addition of stronger acid indicate the free access of protons to the bound CO2 on the opposite side of the urea arm.

Through the combustion of fossil fuels and other human activities, large amounts of CO2 gas have been emitted into the atmosphere, causing many environmental problems, such as the greenhouse effect and global warming. Thus, developing and utilizing renewable clean energy is crucial to reduce CO2 emission and achieve carbon neutrality. The electrochemical CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) has been considered as an effective approach to obtain high value-added chemicals and fuels, which can store intermittent renewable energy and achieve the artificial carbon cycle. In addition, due to its multiple advantages, such as mild reaction conditions, tunable products, and simple implementation, electrochemical CO2RR has attracted extensive attention. Electrochemical CO2RR involves multiple electron–proton transfer steps to obtain multitudinous products, such as C1 products (CO, HCOOH, CH4, etc.) and C2 products (C2H4, C2H5OH, etc.). The intermediates, among which *CO is usually identified as the key intermediate, and reaction pathways of different products intersect, resulting in an extremely complex reaction mechanism. Currently, copper has been widely proven to be the only metal catalyst that can efficiently reduce CO2 to hydrocarbons and oxygenates due to its suitable adsorption energy for *CO. However, the low product selectivity, poor stability, and high overpotential of pure Cu hinder its use for the production of industrial-grade multi-carbon products. Tandem catalysts with multiple types of active sites can sequentially reduce CO2 molecules into desired products. When loaded onto a co-catalyst that can efficiently convert CO2 to *CO (such as Au and Ag), Cu acts as an electron donor owing to its high electrochemical potential. *CO species generated from the substrate can spillover onto the surface of electron-poor Cu due to the stronger adsorption and be further reduced to C2+ products. The use of Cu-based tandem catalysts for electrochemical CO2RR is a promising strategy for improving the performance of CO2RR and thus, has become a research hotspot in recent years. In this review, we first introduce the reaction routes and tandem mechanisms of electrochemical CO2RR. Then, we systematically summarize the recent research progress of Cu-based tandem catalysts for electrochemical CO2RR, including Cu-based metallic materials (alloys, heterojunction, and core-shell structures) as well as Cu-based framework materials, carbon materials, and polymer-modified materials. Importantly, the preparation methods of various Cu-based tandem catalysts and their structure–activity relationship in CO2RR are discussed and analyzed in detail. Finally, the challenges and opportunities of the rational design and controllable synthesis of advanced tandem catalysts for electrochemical CO2RR are proposed.

However, several challenges have hindered the commercialization of this technology, including energy efficiency, the solubility of CO2 in the aqueous phase, and electrode stability. The electrochemical reduction of CO2 to fuels or commodity chemicals is a reaction of high interest for closing the anthropogenic carbon cycle. The role of the electrolyte is of particular interest, as the interplay between the electrocatalytic surface and the electrolyte plays an important role in determining the outcome of the CO2 reduction reaction. Therefore, insights on electrolyte effects on the electrochemical reduction of CO2 are pivotal in designing electrochemical devices that are able to efficiently and selectively convert CO2 into valuable products. Here, we provide an overview of recently obtained insights on electrolyte effects and we discuss how these insights can be used as design parameters for the construction of new electrocatalytic systems.

Only two enzymes are capable of directly reducing CO2: CO dehydrogenase, which produces CO at a [NiFe4S4] active site, and formate dehydrogenase, which produces formate at a mononuclear W or Mo active site. Both metalloenzymes are very rapid, energy-efficient and specific in terms of product. They have been connected to electrodes with two different objectives. A series of studies used protein film electrochemistry to learn about different aspects of the mechanism of these enzymes (reactivity with substrates, inhibitors…). Another series focused on taking advantage of the catalytic performance of these enzymes to build biotechnological devices, from CO2-reducing electrodes to full photochemical devices performing artificial photosynthesis. Here, we review all these works.

The CO2 level in the atmosphere has been increasing since the industrial revolution owing to anthropogenic activities. The increased CO2 level has led to global warming and also has detrimental effects on human beings. Reducing the CO2 level in the atmosphere is urgent for balancing the carbon cycle. In this regard, reduction in CO2 emission and CO2 storage and usage are the main strategies. Among these, CO2 usage has been extensively explored, because it can reduce the CO2 level and simultaneously provide opportunities for the development in catalysts and industries to convert CO2 as a carbon source for preparing valuable products. However, transformation of CO2 to other chemicals is challenging owing to its thermodynamic and kinetic stabilities. Among the CO2 utilization techniques, electrochemical CO2 reduction (ECR) is a promising alternative because it is generally conducted under ambient conditions, and water is used as the economical hydrogen source. Moreover, ECR offers a potential route to store electrical energy from renewable sources in the form of chemical energy, through generation of CO2 reduction products. To improve the energy efficiency and viability of ECR, it is important to decrease the operational overpotential and maintain large current densities and high product selectivities; the development of efficient electrocatalysts is a critical aspect in this regard. To date, many kinds of materials have been designed and studied for application in ECR. Among these materials, metal oxide-based materials exhibit excellent performance as electrocatalysts for ECR and are attracting increasing attention in recent years. Investigation of the mechanism of reactions that involve metallic electrocatalysts has revealed the function of trace amount of oxidized metal species—it has been suggested that the presence of metal oxides and metal-oxygen bonds facilitates the activation of CO2 and the subsequent formation and stabilization of the reaction intermediates, thereby resulting in high efficiency and selectivity of the ECR. Although the stability of metal oxides is a concern as they are prone to reduction under a cathodic potential, the catalytic performance of metal oxide-based catalysts can be maintained through careful designing of the morphology and structure of the materials. In addition, introducing other metal species to metal oxides and fabricating composites of metal oxides and other materials are effective strategies to achieve enhanced performance in ECR. In this review, we summarize the recent progress in the use of metal oxide-based materials as electrocatalysts and their application in ECR. The critical role, stability, and structure-performance relationship of the metal oxide-based materials for ECR are highlighted in the discussion. In the final part, we propose the future prospects for the development of metal oxide-based electrocatalysts for ECR.

As electron transfer to CO2 is generally considered to be the critical step during the activation of CO2, it is important to develop approaches to engineer the electronic properties of catalysts to improve their performance in CO2 electrochemical reduction. Herein, we developed an efficient strategy to facilitate CO2 activation by introducing oxygen vacancies into electrocatalysts with electronic‐rich surface. ZnO nanosheets rich in oxygen vacancies exhibited a current density of ?16.1 mA cm?2 with a Faradaic efficiency of 83 % for CO production. Based on density functional theory (DFT) calculations, the introduction of oxygen vacancies increased the charge density of ZnO around the valence band maximum, resulting in the enhanced activation of CO2. Mechanistic studies further revealed that the enhancement of CO production by introducing oxygen vacancies into ZnO nanosheets originated from the increased binding strength of CO2 and the eased CO2 activation.

We report a straightforward strategy to design efficient N doped porous carbon (NPC) electrocatalyst that has a high concentration of easily accessible active sites for the CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR). The NPC with large amounts of active N (pyridinic and graphitic N) and highly porous structure is prepared by using an oxygen‐rich metal–organic framework (Zn‐MOF‐74) precursor. The amount of active N species can be tuned by optimizing the calcination temperature and time. Owing to the large pore sizes, the active sites are well exposed to electrolyte for CO2RR. The NPC exhibits superior CO2RR activity with a small onset potential of ?0.35 V and a high faradaic efficiency (FE) of 98.4 % towards CO at ?0.55 V vs. RHE, one of the highest values among NPC‐based CO2RR electrocatalysts. This work advances an effective and facile way towards highly active and cost‐effective alternatives to noble‐metal CO2RR electrocatalysts for practical applications.

Considerable attention has been paid to the utilization of CO2, an abundant carbon source in nature. In this regard, porous catalysts have been eagerly explored with excellent performance for photo-/electrocatalytic reduction of CO2 to high valued products.
