The mixed micelle formation in aqueous solutions between an anionic gemini surfactant derived from the amino acid cystine (C(8)Cys)(2), and the phospholipids 1,2-diheptanoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine (DHPC, a micelle-forming phospholipid) and 1,2-dimyristoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine (DMPC, a vesicle-forming phospholipid) has been studied by conductivity and the results compared with the ones obtained for the mixed systems with the single-chain surfactant derived from cysteine, C(8)Cys. Phospholipid-surfactant interactions were found to be synergistic in nature and dependent on the type of phospholipid and on surfactant hydrophobicity. Regular solution theory was used to analyse the gemini surfactant-DHPC binary mixtures and the interaction parameter, β(12), has been evaluated, as well as mixed micelle composition. The results have been interpreted in terms of the interplay between reduction of the electrostatic repulsions among the ionic head groups of the surfactants and steric hindrances arising from incorporation of the zwitterionic phospholipids in the mixed micelles.  相似文献

The synergistic behavior of sodiumdodecylsulfate (SDS) and 1,2-diheptanoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine (DHPC) binary mixtures has been studied with interfacial and pyrene fluorescence(I 1/ I 3) intensity measurements. From the interfacial data, the interfacial parameters; the maximum surface excess (Γmax), or the minimum area per molecule (A min), and the surface pressure at the critical micellar concentration (πcmc) have been evaluated. The cmc value has been used for evaluating the free energies of micellization (ΔG o m). The mixed micelle formation was evaluated with the help of the Clint equation. The SDS plus DHPC mixed micelles showed negative departure from ideality indicating synergistic interactions between the unlike components. The quantitative analysis of mixed micelle, mixed monolayer and the composition of the mixed micelle was carried out with the help of regular solution approximation. The interaction parameters, β and βσ, in the mixed micelle as well as in the mixed monolayer, respectively showed negative values indicating synergistic behavior of SDS and DHPC molecules.  相似文献

The formation of micelles in aqueous mixtures of a carbohydrate-based bolaamphiphile and sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) is investigated by surface tension and small-angle neutron scattering. The obtained values of critical micelle concentration (CMC) are analyzed within the framework of regular solution theory. Synergetic interactions between the bolaamphiphile and SDS are observed (parameter beta is negative; a minimum in the plot CMC vs composition). SANS data are collected for mixtures containing protonated and deuterated SDS. This gives us the possibility to conclude that mixed micelles with a homogeneous distribution of surfactant molecules within the micelle are formed. The shape of the micelles is found to be slightly oblate.  相似文献

Critical micelle concentration (cmc) values have been determined for the mixed zwitterionic/anionic surfactant systems of N-dodecyl-N,N-dimethyl-3-ammonio-1-propanesulfonate (ZW3-12)/sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), N-dodecyl-N,N-(dimethylammonio)butyrate (DDMAB)/SDS, N-octyl-N,N-dimethyl-3-ammonio-1-propanesulfonate (ZW3-08)/sodium octyl sulfate (SOS), and the zwitterionic/cationic systems of ZW3-12/dodecyltrimethylammonium bromide (DTAB), DDMAB/DTAB. Conductivity studies and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy were the methods employed for cmc determinations. The degree of nonideality of the interaction in the micelle (beta(m)), for each system, was determined according to Rubingh's nonideal solution theory. Evidence was found for the existence of strong interactions between zwitterionic and anionic surfactants in each of the zwitterionic/anionic systems. The ZW3-08/SOS and DDMAB/SDS systems behaved synergistically at all mole fractions studied while the ZW3-12/SDS system exhibited synergistic behavior above mole fractions of 0.30. Greater negative deviations from ideal behavior were demonstrated in the DDMAB/SDS system than in the other two zwitterionic/anionic systems. The zwitterionic/cationic systems of ZW3-12/DTAB and ZW3-08/OTAB displayed only slight deviations from ideal behavior, therefore indicating near ideal mixing.  相似文献

In this paper, mixtures of sugar-based decanoyl-N-methylglucamide with three different n-alkyltrimethylammonium bromides (n=12 (DTAB), 14 (TTAB), and 16 (CTAB)) have been studied using conductance and fluorescence spectroscopic techniques. The critical micelle concentration values of pure and mixed systems were determined by both the conductance and the pyrene 1:3 ratio methods. The experimental results were interpreted using thermodynamic mixing approaches based on the pseudophase separation model. These analyses allowed us to determine the interaction parameters and the composition of the mixed micelles through the whole composition range. Since all the ionic surfactants used in this study have the same headgroup, the differences observed between the three mixed systems were attributed to the lengths of their hydrocarbon chains. It was established that, besides interactions of electrostatic character, additional short-range interactions must be considered. By using the static quenching method, the mean micellar aggregation numbers of mixed micelles were obtained. In the cases of the mixed systems with DTAB and TTAB it was observed that the aggregation number is initially reduced with the participation of the ionic component, remaining almost constant and close to the aggregation number of the pure ionic micelle. However, in the systems involving CTAB it is observed that the size of micelles initially increases and then decreases slightly for mixtures with a high content of the ionic component. The hydrophobic index pyrene 1:3 ratio was used to examine possible changes in the micellar micropolarity; however, no definitive conclusions could be derived from these experiments. In order to study the evolution of the local viscosity of the mixed micelles upon addition of the ionic surfactant, fluorescence polarization measurements were carried out with two different probes, fluorescein and coumarin 6. It was found that the participation of the ionic component in the mixed micelle induces the formation of less ordered structure than that of pure nonionic micelles. An attempt was made to correlate these effects with the interaction parameters obtained from the theoretical mixing model and, consequently, with the alkyl chain length of the ionic components.

Sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS)-poly(propylene oxide) methacrylate (PPOMA) (of molecular weight M(w) = 434 g x mol(-1)) mixtures have been studied using conductimetry, static light scattering, fluorescence spectroscopy, and 1H NMR. It has been shown that SDS and PPOMA form mixed micelles, and SDS and PPOMA aggregation numbers, N(ag SDS) and N(ag PPOMA), have been determined. Total aggregation numbers of the micelles (N(ag SDS) + N(ag PPOMA)) and those of SDS decrease upon increasing the weight ratio R = PPOMA/SDS. Localization of PPOMA inside the mixed micelles is considered (i) using 1H NMR to localize the methacrylate function at the hydrophobic core-water interface and (ii) by studying the SDS-PPO micellar system (whose M(w) = 400 g x mol(-1)). Both methods have indicated that the PPO chain of the macromonomer is localized at the SDS micelle surface. Models based on the theorical prediction of the critical micellar concentration of mixed micelles and structural model of swollen micelles are used to confirm the particular structure proposed for the SDS-PPOMA system, i.e., the micelle hydrophobic core is primarily composed of the C12 chains of the sodium dodecyl sulfate, the hydrophobic core-water interface is made up of the SDS polar heads as well as methacrylate functions of the PPOMA, the PPO chains of the macromonomer are adsorbed preferentially on the surface, i.e., on the polar heads of the SDS.  相似文献

Effects of a short-chain phospholipid, dihexanoylphosphatidylcholine (DHPC), on the structure and morphology of membrane assemblies of a long-chain phospholipid, dimyristoylphosphatidylcholine (DMPC), were examined by fluorescence spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and cryogenic transmission electron microscopy (cryo-TEM). It was found by fluorescence measurements that DHPC affects on the gel and liquid crystalline state of DMPC vesicle membranes in different ways. Further, the result of DSC suggested that, along the transition process from DMPC vesicle to DMPC–DHPC mixed micelle, there are at least three different concentration regions which are characterized by the individual variation pattern of the transition temperature and enthalpy change. The cryo-TEM micrographs demonstrated the formation of thread-like assemblies in the second region and the coexistence of the assemblies and spherical micelles in the third region. Thus, it was concluded that the structural transition from DMPC vesicle to DMPC–DHPC mixed micelle could occur in a stepwise manner through the formation of the thread-like assembly, which cannot be described by the three-stage model of vesicle to micelle transition.  相似文献

Micelle-based systems have a long history in many areas, for instance, membrane mimics, reaction media, and food additives. All prior educational laboratory experiments dealing with micelle-based systems that have been published and utilized deal with unary surfactant systems. Unfortunately, most practical applications that use surfactants and micelles involve mixtures because these often exhibit behavior unlike the individual components. That is, surfactant mixtures deviate significantly from a regular solution approximation (i.e., there is synergism) when the individual surfactant structures differ significantly. In this laboratory experiment, we describe a simple method that exploits the unique behavior of the fluorophore pyrene to rapidly determine the critical micelle concentration (CMC) of mixed micelle systems. We also determine the dimensionless interaction parameter, , that describes the net pairwise interaction between surfactant species within a binary micellar system. The binary system we chose to study is sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and dodecyl trimethylammonium bromide (DTAB) dissolved in water. The value recovered by students using our method is statistically equivalent to the value reported in the literature using more sophisticated and protracted methods. This laboratory experiment opens the door for students to explore regular solution theory, non-ideal mixing, micelle formation, and fluorescence spectroscopy within a single experiment.  相似文献

The critical micelle concentrations of binary mixtures of sodium dodecylsulphate (SDS) and sodium lauroylsarcosinate (SLAS) have been determined in water by conductivity measurements at different mole fractions for each of the components. The critical micelle concentrations were slightly lower than that predicted from ideal mixing theory indicating positive synergistic interactions in mixed micelle formation. The results of the mixed systems were analysed using the Regular Solution Theory and the approach based on the Gibbs–Duhem equation which allowed for the determination of the composition of the mixed micelle, the activity coefficients and the pair-wise molecular interaction parameter β. The β values were all negative at all mole fractions investigated, showing a slight deviation from ideality, with an average value of –0.27. The excess free energy of the mixed systems was also calculated and the values were all negative for the mixed systems studied, an indication that the mixed micelles are thermodynamically stable relative to the individual component. This thermodynamic parameter also exhibits symmetrical behaviour with respect to micellar composition suggestive of a regular solution behaviour of the mixed surfactant system.  相似文献

The mixed micellar properties of a triblock copolymer, Pluronic L64, (EO)13(PO)30(EO)13, and a nonionic surfactant, Triton X-100, in aqueous solution with conventional alkyl ammonium bromides and their dimeric homologues were investigated with the help of fluorescence and cloud point measurements. The composition of mixed micelles and the interaction parameter, beta, evaluated from the critical micelle concentration (cmc) data for different mixtures using Rubingh's and Motomura's theories are discussed. It has been observed that the mixed micelle formation between monomeric/dimeric alkyl ammonium bromides and L64 was due to synergistic interactions which increase with the increase in hydrophobicity of the cationic component. On the other hand, synergistic mixing was observed in the mixed micelles of Triton X-100 and monomeric cationic surfactants, the magnitude of which decreases slightly with the increase in hydrophobicity of the cationic component. Antagonistic interactions were observed in the case of Triton X-100 and dimeric cationic surfactants.  相似文献

The aggregation behavior and the interaction of four mixed systems for a cationic fluorocarbon surfactant, diethanolheptadecafluoro-2-undecanolmethylammonium chloride (DEFUMACl), mixing with cationic hydrocarbon surfactants, alkyltrimethylammonium chloride, CnTACl (n=12, 14, 16, and 18; where n=12 is DTACl, n=14 is TTACl, n=16 is CTACl, and n=18 is OTACl), were studied by 1H and 19F NMR in more detail. The results of 19F NMR measurements strongly indicate that in the three mixed systems of DEFUMACl/DTACl, DEFUMACl/TTACl, and DEFUMACl/CTACl at different molar fractions of fluorocarbon surfactant (alphaF=(cDEFUMACl/cDEFUMACl+cCnTACl)), with an increase of the total concentration of fluorocarbon and hydrocarbon surfactants (cT=cF+cH), the mixed micelles at the first break point and the individual DEFUMACl micelles at the second break point form. However, three different types of micelles were determined in DEFUMACl/OTACl mixtures by 19F NMR measurements, OTACl-rich and DEFUMACl-rich mixed micelles and individual DEFUMACl micelles, respectively. The chemical shifts of proton Deltadelta (1H) for -CH3 in the mixed systems of DEFUMACl/CnTACl (n=12, 14, 16, and 18) have different variation trends from the 19F NMR measurements. For the two systems of DEFUACl/DTACl and DEFUMACl/TTACl, the mixed micelles form at the first break point. At the second break point, for lower alpha F values the DTACl-rich and TTACl-rich mixed micelles form with a strong downfield shift and for higher alpha F values DEFUMACl-rich mixed micelles form with a strong upfield. For the other two systems of DEFUMACl/CTACl and DEFUMAC/OTACl, the chemical shifts of proton Deltadelta (1H) of -CH3 increase with an increase of the total concentration of DEFUMACl/CTACl or OTACl, and mixed CH- and CF-surfactant micelles form. At higher total concentration, the greater effect of fluorinated chains of DEFUMACl on CH-chains was obvious, resulting in the strong upfield chemical shifts. In cationic fluorocarbon and hydrocarbon surfactant mixtures, the different kinds of micelles observed by 19F and 1H NMR measurements could be caused by the increase in alkyl chain length of hydrocarbon surfactants with different critical micelle concentrations. Combining two theoretical models for mixing, for the four different chain-length hydrocarbon surfactants studied, one can conclude that the two components of mixtures interact with each other and form mixed micelles in two completely different ways according to their molecular properties and cmc values in a certain range of total concentrations. One is close to an ideal mixing case with the formation of one type of mixed micelles, such as the DEFUMACl/DTACl and DEFUMACl/TTACl systems. The other is a demixing case with the formation of two types of micelles, i.e., fluorocarbon-rich and hydrocarbon-rich mixed micelles, such as DEFUMACl/CTACl and DEFUMACl/OTACl systems. However, as the total concentrations of the mixed systems are high enough, the four systems tend to demix and to form individual micelles of corresponding components due to the initial respective interaction between fluorocarbon and hydrocarbon chains. That is to say, at high total concentration, the individual DEFUMACl micelles in all four systems could form. These results may be primarily directed toward acquiring an understanding of the mechanism of CF-CH mixtures in aqueous solution and secondarily directed toward providing more detailed information on nonideal mixing.  相似文献

Ultrafast fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) in a catanionic [sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS)-dodecyltrimethyl ammonium bromide (DTAB)] vesicle is studied by femtosecond up-conversion. The vesicles (diameter ~400 nm for SDS-rich and ~250 nm for DTAB-rich vesicles) are much larger than the SDS and DTAB micelles (diameter ~4 nm). In both micelle and vesicles, FRET occurs in multiple time scales and the time scales of FRET correspond to a donor-acceptor distance varying between 12 and 36 A?.  相似文献

The pyrene fluorescence measurements have been carried out for the micelle formation of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), dodecyltrimethylammonium bromide (DTAB), and dimethylene bis(dodecyldimethylammonium bromide) (12-2-12) in the presence of fixed different amounts of various generations of poly(amidoamine) (PAMAM). The critical micelle concentration (cmc) of SDS decreases with an increase in the fixed amount of PAMAM, suggesting the facilitation of micellization due to the participation of SDS-PAMAM complex in the micelle formation. This behavior has not been observed for DTAB/12-2-12 in the presence of various generations of PAMAM. The results indicate that SDS always has stronger interactions with all the generations of PAMAM in comparison to those of DTAB and 12-2-12.  相似文献

Micellar properties of binary mixtures of hexadecyldiethylethanolammonium bromide surfactant with tetradecyldimethylammonium, trimethylammonium, triphenylphosphonium, diethylethanolammonium, and pyridinium bromide surfactants have been characterized employing conductometric and fluorescence techniques. The critical micelle concentration (cmc*) and the degree of counter-ion binding values (delta) of the binary systems were determined from the conductivity measurements. The results were analyzed in light of various existing theories to calculate micellar composition, activity coefficients, and the interaction parameter (beta). Partial contribution of each surfactant, cmc1*, cmc2*, to the overall cmc* value was also evaluated. Aggregation numbers and micropolarity of the mixed micelles were determined from fluorescence measurements. The results were discussed in terms of synergetic interactions in these systems on the basis of the head group/head group and tail/tail interactions and the counter-ion binding.  相似文献

Steady state fluorescence measurements have been carried out for binary mixtures of a series of monomeric cationic (MC), zwitterionic (ZI), dimeric cationic (DC), and twin-tail cationic (TC) surfactants with sugar (beta-C8G and beta-C12G) over the whole mole fraction range using pyrene as fluorescence probe. The cmc values thus determined for all the binary mixtures have been further evaluated using the regular solution theory. The various micellar parameters, such as micelle mole fraction (X1), regular solution interaction parameter (beta), micropolarity, and mean micelle aggregation number (Nagg), have been determined for all these series of mixtures. Variation in all these micellar parameters demonstrates that mixed micelles of these surfactants with beta-C8G are mostly synergistic in nature and the synergism increases with the increase in hydrophobicity of the cosurfactant in each case. The mixtures of beta-C12G with various cosurfactants do not show this behavior and instead of it, they show an increase in antagonism with the increase in hydrophobicity of cosurfactants. This discrepancy has been attributed to a large difference in hydrophobicity between beta-C8G and beta-C12G, and the chain folding of the latter is considered to be the reason for the antagonism.  相似文献

The properties of anionic-rich and cationic-rich mixtures of CTAB (cetyltrimethylammonium bromide) and SDS (sodium dodecyl sulfate) were investigated with conductometry and surface tension measurements and by determining the surfactant NMR self-diffusion coefficients. The critical aggregate concentration (CAC), surface tension reduction effectiveness(gamma(CAC)), surface excess(Gamma(max)), and mean molecular surface area (A(min)) were determined from plots of the surface tension (gamma) as a function of the total surfactant concentration. The compositions of the adsorbed films (Z) and aggregates (chi) were estimated by using regular solution theory, and then the interaction parameters in the aggregates (beta) and the adsorbed film phases (beta(sigma)) were calculated. The results showed that the synergism between the surfactants enhances the formation of mixed aggregates and reduces the surface tension. Further, the nature and strength of the interaction between the surfactants in the mixtures were obtained by calculating the values of the following parameters: the interaction parameter, beta, the size parameter, rho, and the nonrandom mixing parameter, P*. These results indicate that in ionic surfactant mixtures the optimized packing parameter has the highest value and that the size parameter can be used to account for deviations from the predictions of regular solution theory. It was concluded that, for planar air/aqueous interfaces and aggregation systems, this nonideality increases as the temperature increases. This trend is attributed to the increased dehydration of the surfactant head groups that results from increases in temperature. Further, our conductometry measurements show that the counterion binding number of mixed micelles formed in mixtures with a high CTAB content is different to those with a high SDS content. This difference is due to either their different aggregation sizes or the different interactions between the head groups and the counterions.  相似文献

Mixed micelle formation and synergistic interactions of binary surfactant combinations of sodium nonylphenol polyoxyethylene ether sulfate (NPES) with typical surfactants such as sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), Triton X-100 (TX100), cetyl trimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB), and sodium bis(2-ethylhexyl) sulfosuccinate (AOT) at 25 degrees C in the presence of NaCl have been investigated. The critical micelle concentration of the binary mixtures has been quantitatively estimated by steady-state fluorescence measurements. The micellar characteristics such as composition, activity coefficients, and mutual interaction parameters have been estimated following different theoretical treatments. Investigation on the micellization and synergistic interaction of NPES with four kinds of surfactants showed that the behavior of the binary mixture deviated from the ideal state. The analysis revealed that the interaction parameter values (beta) varied with variation of solvent composition. Besides the strong electrostatic attraction between the oppositely charged surfactant NPES-CTAB mixture, the interaction between NPES and SDS also showed far more deviation from ideal behavior than that of TX100 and AOT. The reason for the synergism is also discussed and the results show that an ionic and a nonionic surfactant character existed concurrently in NPES due to the combination of a sulfate group and polyoxyethylene as a hydrophilic moiety. Zeta potential and diffusion coefficient measurements of micelles confirmed the synergistic interaction between the binary surfactants.  相似文献
