An experimental study was done to quantify the effects of a variety of background particulates on the delayed laminar-turbulent transition of a thermally stabilized boundary layer in water. A Laser-Doppler Velocimeter system was used to measure the location of boundary layer transition on a 50 mm diameter, 9:1 fineness ratio ellipsoid. The ellipsoid had a 0.15 m RMS surface finish. Boundary layer transition locations were determined for length Reynolds numbers ranging from 3.0 × 106 to 7.5 × 106. The ellipsoid was tested in three different heating conditions in water seeded with particles of four distinct size ranges. For each level of boundary layer heating, measurements of transition were made for clean water and subsequently, water seeded with 12.5 m, 38.9 m, 85.5 m and 123.2 m particles, alternately. The three surface heating conditions tested were no heating, T = 10°C and T = 15°C where T is the difference between the inlet model heating water temperature, T i, and free stream water temperature, T . The effects of particle concentration were studied for 85.5 m and 123.2 m particulates. The results of the study can be summarized as follows. The 12.5 m and 38.9 m particles has no measurable effect on transition for any of the test conditions. However, transition was significantly affected by the 85.5 m and 123.2 m particles. Above a length Reynolds number of 4 × 106 the boundary layer transition location moved forward on the body due to the effect of the 85.5 m particles for all heating conditions. The largest percentage changes in transition location from clean water, were observed for 85.5 m particles seeded water.Transition measurements made with varied concentrations of background particulates indicated that the effect of the 85.5 m particles on the transition of the model reached a plateau between 2.65 particulates/ml concentration and 4.2 particles/ml. Measurements made with 123.3 m particles at concentrations up to 0.3 part/ml indicated no similar plateau.

New inversors are proposed which are generalizations of the well-known inversor of Peaucellier. It appears that a kite in the Peaucellier cell is replaceable by an arbitrary 4-bar linkage (abhk) whereas the direction and length of the straight line, produced by the inversor, can be manipulated through the particular choice of the relative polar coordinates of a vertex A of the triangular input link. Formulas are derived for practical inversors with a revolving input link. The ones selected are basically governed by the choice of two transmission angles, 1 and 3, by the length L of the acquired line, as well as by its direction represented by the angle /2- comprised between the line L and the frame.

An optical technique was used to study the dispersion of 50 m, 90 m and 150 m droplets downstream of a source located in the center of a vertical pipe through which turbulent air is flowing. A turbulent dispersion coefficient, P, and a mean-square of the fluctuations in the turbulent velocity, v p 2 , are determined from the change of the measured mean-square displacement of the droplets over the pipe cross section with time. The interesting aspect of the experiments is that they explored conditions where the inertia of the particles is believed to be a much more important effect than that of the crossing of trajectories associated with the inequality of the average velocities of the particles and the fluid.

On the viscosity of suspensions of solid spheres
A cell theory is used to derive the dependence of the zero-shear-rate viscosity on volume concentration for a suspension of uniform, solid, neutrally buoyant spheres. This result reduces to Einstein's solution at infinite dilution and to Frankel and Acrivos's expression in the limit as the concentration approaches its maximum value. Good agreement is found between the solution and the available data for the entire concentration range, provided that the maximum concentration is determined from the viscosity data themselves.Nomenclature a radius of sphere - d the distance separating the sphere surfaces measured parallel to the line connecting the sphere centers - E energy dissipation rate in one-half the liquid volume separating the spheres - E cell total energy dissipation rate in the cell - E homogeneous energy dissipation rate in the cell of a hypothetical one phase fluid - E interaction energy dissipation rate in the cell due to sphere interactions - E sphere energy dissipation rate in the cell due to the sphere at the cell center - F force on one sphere - h minimum separation distance between two spheres - J (1/2)d = one-half the distance separating the sphere surfaces measured parallel to the line connecting the sphere centers - p pressure - W velocity of one sphere in squeezing flow between two spheres relative to the midpoint of the line connecting the sphere centers - i unit vectors in thei-th direction - elongation rate - viscosity of the suspending fluid - r */ = relative viscosity - * viscosity of the suspension - the total stress tensor - the part of the total stress tensor that vanishes at equilibrium - volume fraction of spheres

This paper deals with the problem of twisting a non-homogeneous, isotropic, half-space by rotating a circular part of its boundary surface (0 r < a, z = 0) through a given angle. A ring (a < r < b, z = 0) outside the circle is stress-free and the remaining part (r > b, z = 0) is rigidly clamped. The shear modulus is assumed to vary with the cylindrical coordinates, r, z by the relation (z) = 1(c + z), c 0 where 1, c and are real constants. Expressions for some quantities of physical importance, such as torque applied at the surface of the disk and stress intensity factors, are obtained. The effects of non-homogeneity on torque and stress intensity factor are illustrated graphically.

Summary A study is made of the attenuation of pressure surges in a two-dimension a channel carrying a viscous liquid when a valve at the downstream end is suddenly closed. The analysis differs from previous work in this area by taking into account the transient nature of the wall shear, which in the past has been assumed as equivalent to that existing in steady flow. For large values of the frictional resistance parameter the transient wall shear analysis results in less attenuation than given by the steady wall shear assumption.Nomenclature c /, ft/sec - e base of natural logarithms - F(x, y) integration function, equation (38) - (x) mean value of F(x, y) - g local acceleration of gravity, ft/sec2 - h width of conduit, ft - k (2m–1)2 2 L/h 2 c, equation (35) - k* 12L/h 2 c, frictional resistance parameter, equation (46) - L length of conduit, ft - m positive integer - n positive integer - p pressure, lb/ft2 - p 0 constant pressure at inlet of conduit, lb/ft2 - P pressure plus elevation head, p+gz, equation (4) - mean value of P over the conduit width h - P 0 p 0+gz 0, lbs/ft2 - R frictional resistance coefficient for steady state wall shear, lb sec/ft4 - s positive integer; also, condensation, equation (6) - t time, sec - t ct/L, dimensionless time - u x component of fluid velocity, ft/sec - u m mean velocity in conduit, equation (12), ft/sec - u 0(y) velocity profile in Poiseuille flow, equation (19), ft/sec - transformed velocity - U initial mean velocity in conduit - x distance along conduit, measured from valve (fig. 1), ft - x x/L, dimensionless distance - y distance normal to conduit wall (fig. 1), ft - y y/h, equation (25) - z elevation, measured from arbitrary datum, ft - z 0 elevation of constant pressure source, ft - isothermal bulk compression modulus, lbs/ft2 - n , equation (37) - n (2n–1)/2, equation (36) - viscosity, slugs/ft sec - / = kinematic viscosity, ft2/sec - density of fluid, slugs/ft3 - 0 density of undisturbed fluid, slugs/ft3 - ø angle between conduit and vertical (fig. 1) The research upon which this paper is based was supported by a grant from the National Science Foundation.

We study a general mathematical model of a classical system of infinitely many point particles. The space X of infinite particle configurations is equipped with a natural topology as well as a measurable structure related to it. It is also connected with a family {X A } of local spaces of finite configurations indexed by bounded open sets A in the one-particle space E. A theorem analogous to Kolmogoroff's fundamental theorem for stochastic processes is proved, according to which a consistent family { A } of local probability measures A defined on the X A gives rise to a unique probability measure on X. We also study the problem of integral representation for positive linear forms defined over some linear space of real functions on X. We prove that a positive linear form F(f), defined for functions f in the class C+P, admits a uniquely determined integral representation F(f)= f () d, where is a probability measure over X.

Summary A relatively simple example of asymmetric snap-through buckling in a continuous structure is the nonlinear problem of a cantilevered column restrained at its tip by a stiff wire, which is inclined at an acute angle to the column centerline, and loaded at its tip by a force perpendicular to the centerline. A parameter called , which is the nondimensional ratio of the flexural rigidity of the column to the combined extensional stiffness of the wire and the column centerline, determines the essential features of the buckling. If is zero, or is small compared to unity, the bending of the column is small enough to justify the use of linear bending theory for the column. Hence, even though the constraint is nonlinear, the solution to this problem is obtained in closed form. The critical point for the structure is found to be an asymmetric branching point for =0, while for positive, the critical point is a snap-through type. The effect of is similar to that induced by initial imperfections in more complex structures. For very small , the critical load is markedly decreased from the value for =0. Moreover, the graph of the load vs. tip deflection has the appearance of having an acute discontinuity in slope at the critical point for very small, although it is actually found that the graph has a horizontal tangent there.

This paper presents a theoretical and numerical investigation of the natural convection boundary-layer along a vertical surface, which is embedded in a porous medium, when the surface heat flux varies as (1 +x 2)), where is a constant andx is the distance along the surface. It is shown that for > -1/2 the solution develops from a similarity solution which is valid for small values ofx to one which is valid for large values ofx. However, when -1/2 no similarity solutions exist for large values ofx and it is found that there are two cases to consider, namely < -1/2 and = -1/2.
An analytical approximation for the frozen laminar boundary layer flow of a binary mixture
An analytical approximation is derived for the frozen laminar boundary layer flow of a partially dissociated binary mixture along a strongly cooled flat plate. The concentration at the wall is shown to be a universal function of the Damkohler-number for the wall reaction. The Damkohlernumber also serves as a parameter of shape for the concentration profile which is presented in analytical form. The heat transfer at the wall depending on a conduction and a diffusion flux is derived and discussed. The ratio of these fluxes is expressed as a function of the Damkohler-number if the boundary conditions are known.

The results of an analytical approximation method to predict the film vaporization are compared with the predictions of a finite difference method of Hermitian type. The analytically estimated rate of vaporization of different hydrocarbons, which is the most important value for practical applications, deviates only a few percents from the numerically estimated value.

Temperature dependence of surface tension of pure refrigerants from triple point up to the critical point
The surface tension of six fluids (SF6, CCl3F, CCl2F2, CClF3, CBrF3, CHClF2) have been measured by means of a modified capillary rise method. The liquid vapor densities, which are needed to calculate the surface tension, have partly been determined by means of refractive indices simultaneously measured in the same apparatus. The temperature dependence of the surface tension is described by an extended van der Waals power law =O(Tc-T)(1+...). For simple fluids one term and for polar and associating fluids two terms are necessary and sufficient. The critical exponent is found to be 1.284 ± 0.005 and nearly independent of the molecular structure.

Summary The present work deals with the case of a two-dimensional slider bearing with a rigid pad and an elastic bearing. Fluid viscosity is assumed to be only a pressure function. We determined the bearing deformation, the pressure distribution and the load capacity at different values of the inclination angle of the slider, with a numerical integration of the system consisting of the elasticity and Reynolds equations. The results show that, with an iso-viscous fluid, bearing elasticity causes a load capacity decrease. Instead bearing elasticity together with the variation of fluid viscosity due to pressure causes a load capacity greater than that of the iso-viscous case (=0).

Expressions are obtained for the pressure distribution in an externally pressurised thrust bearing for the condition when one bearing surface is rotated. The influence of centripetal acceleration and the combined effect of rotational and radial inertia terms are included in the analysis. Rotation of the bearing causes the lubricant to have a velocity component in an axial direction towards the rotating surface as it spirals radially outwards between the bearing surfaces. This results in an increase in the pumping losses and a decrease in the load capacity of the bearing. A further loss in the performance of the bearing is found when the radial inertia term, in addition to the rotational inertia term is included in the analysis.Nomenclature r, z, cylindrical co-ordinates - V r, V , V z velocity components in the r, and z directions respectively - U, X, W representative velocities - coefficient of viscosity - p static pressure at radius r - p mean static pressure at radius r - Q volume flow per unit time - 2h lubricant film thickness - density of the lubricant - r 2 outside radius of bearing = D/2 - angular velocity of bearing - R dimensionless radius = r/h - P dimensionless pressure = h 3 p/Q - Re channel Reynolds number = Q/h

A method by which the transport of anisotropic radiative multiple scattering can be predicted is developed in this paper. A one-dimensional integral intensity model and a three-dimensional diffusion intensity model are both constructed. The former provides a closed-form solution, while the latter involves successive approximation and Gauss's quadrature. On the basis of these methods, the reflection and transmission of solar radiation in a homogeneous cloud layer are computed. The results differ from those for isotropic and Rayleigh scattering assumptions and illustrate the effects on transmission and reflectivity of optical thickness, wavelength, incidence angle, and albedo of single scattering.Nomenclature D + transmitted diffusion radiation intensity [W/cm2 sr · m] - D reflected diffusion radiation intensity [W/cm2 sr · m] - I pencil of radiation or specific intensity [W/cm2 sr · m] - I 0 solar irradiance [W/cm2] - K extinction cross-section or total cross-section, + - s (u, ), unit scattered radiation vector - s 0 (u 0, 0), unit incident radiation vector - t optical thickness - u cosine of the viewing angle, , which is measured from the vertical - u 0 cosine of the angle of incident, 0, which is measured from the vertical - absorption cross-section - scattering function - absorption coefficient - scattering angle, s · s 0 - scattering cross-section - scattered azimuthal angle - 0 incident azimuthal angle - a sphere - a solid angle - 0 albedo of single scattering,

The dynamics of an analytic reversible vector field (X,) is studied in with one real parameter close to 0; X=0 is a fixed point. The differential Dx (0,0) generates an oscillatory dynamics with a frequency of order 1—due to two simple, opposite eigenvalues lying on the imaginary axis—and it also generates a slow dynamics which changes from a hyperbolic type—eigenvalues are —to an elliptic type—eigenvalues are —as passes trough 0. The existence of reversible homoclinic connections to periodic orbits is known for such vector fields. In this paper we study a particular subclass of such vector fields, obtained by small reversible perturbations of the normal form. We give an explicit condition on the perturbation, generically satisfied, which prevents the existence of a homoclinic connections to 0 for the perturbed system. The normal form system of any order admits a reversible homoclinic connection to 0, which then does not survive under perturbation of higher order. It will be seen that normal form essentially decouples the hyperbolic and elliptic part of the linearization to any chosen algebraic order. However, this decoupling does not persist arbitrary reversible perturbation, which finally causes the appearance of small amplitude oscillations.

Conclusions We have investigated solutions of equation (3) when 2 is an eigenvalue of the linearized operator (13) and when it is not. In Section 4 we have shown that for 0 and 2 = i 2 we have exactly two nontrivial solutions which bifurcate to the right of i 2 ; these solutions are shown to exist in an interval ( i 2 , i 2 + 0). The method of Section 3 may then be used to extend these two solutions to the right of i 2 + 0 providing that 2= i 2 + 0 is not an eigenvalue of the linear operator (13) evaluated at = ± 1. Either a solution can be uniquely extended, or there exists a value of 2where the bifurcation method must be applied again3.While the method used here gives the exact number of solutions bifurcating from i 2 , other problems remain open; for example, it is still not proven that the two bifurcating branches have i zeros, as is the case for Hammerstein operators with oscillation kernels [4]. The conjecture of Odeh and Tadjbakhsh that there are exactly 2(i+1) nontrivial solutions in the interval i 2 < i +1/2 remains un-answered, although it would be proven if one could show that there is no secondary bifurcation as in the cases of Kolodner [7] and Coffman [8].
