An energy balance equation for plane-parallel flows of a vibrationally excited diatomic gas described by a two-temperature relaxation model is derived within the framework of the nonlinear energy theory of hydrodynamic stability. A variational problem of calculating critical Reynolds numbers Recr determining the lower boundary of the possible beginning of the laminar-turbulent transition is considered for this equation. Asymptotic estimates of Recr are obtained, which show the characteristic dependences of the critical Reynolds number on the Mach number, bulk viscosity, and relaxation time. A problem for arbitrary wave numbers is solved by the collocation method. In the realistic range of flow parameters for a diatomic gas, the minimum critical Reynolds numbers are reached on modes of streamwise disturbances and increase approximately by a factor of 2.5 as the flow parameters increase.  相似文献

An energy functional leading to a resolvable variational problem for determining the critical Reynolds number of laminar-turbulent transition Re cr is constructed within the framework of the nonlinear energy stability theory of compressible flows. Asymptotic estimates containing the characteristic dependence in the main order are obtained for the stability of various modes of Couette compressible gas flow. The asymptotics considered are long-wave approximations. This suggests that the obtained dependence describes the effect of bulk viscosity on the large-scale vortex structures characteristic of Kelvin-Helmholtz instability. __________ Translated from Prikladnaya Mekhanika i Tekhnicheskaya Fizika, Vol. 49, No. 3, pp. 73–84, May–June, 2008.  相似文献

Particle image velocimetry (PIV) has been used to compare between turbulence characteristics just within and above a mature corn canopy and those of a model canopy setup in a wind tunnel (WT). The laboratory normalized mean velocity profile is adjusted using variable mesh screens to match the normalized mean shear of the corn field (CF) data. The smallest resolved scale in the field is about 15 times the Kolmogorov length scale (ηCF ≈ 0.4 mm), whereas in the WT it is 5 times ηWTWT ≈ 0.15 mm). In both cases, the mean velocity and turbulence statistics are consistent with those measured using single point sensors. However, the profiles of normalized Reynolds shear stress in the field and the laboratory differ. Turbulent spectral densities calculated from PIV spatial and time series in the field display an inertial range spanning three decades. In the laboratory due to lower Reynolds numbers, the inertial range shrinks to two decades. Quadrant-Hole analysis is applied to Reynolds shear stress, vorticity magnitude and dissipation rates. In quadrants 1–3, the WT and field conditionally sampled stresses show similar trends. However, a conflicting trend is found in the sweep quadrant. The analysis confirms that sweep and ejections dominate the momentum flux and dissipation rate. The content of this paper, entitled “Applying PIV for Measuring Turbulence just within and above a Corn Canopy,” was presented at the 6th International Symposium on Particle Image Velocimetry at Pasadena, CA, USA, September 21–23, 2005.  相似文献

Two-dimensional nonlinear equilibrium solutions for the plane Poiseuille–Couette flow are computed by directly solving the full Navier–Stokes equations as a nonlinear eigenvalue problem. The equations are solved using the two-point fourth-order compact scheme and the Newton–Raphson iteration technique. The linear eigenvalue computations show that the combined Poiseuille–Couette flow is stable at all Reynolds numbers when the Couette velocity component σ2 exceeds 0.34552. Starting with the neutral solution for the plane Poiseuille flow, the nonlinear neutral surfaces for the combined Poiseuille–Couette flow were mapped out by gradually increasing the velocity component σ2. It is found that, for small σ2, the neutral surfaces stay in the same family as that for the plane Poiseuille flow, and the nonlinear critical Reynolds number gradually increases with increasing σ2. When the Couette velocity component is increased further, the neutral curve deviates from that for the Poiseuille flow with an appearance of a new loop at low wave numbers and at very low energy. By gradually increasing the σ2 values at a constant Reynolds number, the nonlinear critical Reynolds numbers were determined as a function of σ2. The results show that the nonlinear neutral curve is similar in shape to a linear case. The critical Reynolds number increases slowly up to σ2∼ 0.2 and remains constant until σ2∼ 0.58. Beyond σ2 > 0.59, the critical Reynolds number increases sharply. From the computed results it is concluded that two-dimensional nonlinear equilibrium solutions do not exist beyond a critical σ2 value of about 0.59. The swirling flow between a rotating lid and a stationary cylinder is studied experimentally. The flow is governed by two parameters: the ratio of container height to disk radius, h, and the Reynolds number, Re, based on the disk angular velocity, cylinder radius and kinematic viscosity of the working liquid. For the first time, the onset of three-dimensional flow behavior is measured by combining the high spatial resolution of particle image velocimetry and the temporal accuracy of laser Doppler anemometry. A detailed mapping of the transition scenario from steady and axisymmetric flow to unsteady and three-dimensional flow is investigated for 1 ≥ h ≥ 3.5. The flow is characterized by the development of azimuthal modes of different wave numbers. A range of different modes is detected and critical Reynolds numbers and associated frequencies are identified. The results are compared to the numerical stability analysis of Gelfgat et al. (J Fluid Mech 438:363–377, 2001). In most cases, the measured onset of three-dimensionality is in good agreement with the numerical results and disagreements can be explained by bifurcations not accounted for by the numerical stability analysis.  相似文献

The mean value theorem of integral calculus guarantees that the apparent viscosity η a can easily be converted into the correct viscosity η. For ordinary liquids there is a direct identity between η a and η but the apparent shear rate (or apparent shear stress) has to be shifted to the representative shear rate γ˙^ (or representative shear stress τ^). A model free approximation scheme is introduced which implies a constant shift factor. The corresponding approximation for η is acceptable for liquids most commonly encountered. For plastic fluids the relation between η and η a is more complex since it involves a function depending upon α; the yield stress relative to the maximum stress within the viscometer. Using the same approximation scheme as before the shift factor will involve α as well. The corresponding approximation of η is shown to be acceptable for the whole range of α. We investigated the dynamic viscoelasticity and elongational viscosity of polypropylene (PP) containing 0.5 wt% of 1,3:2,4-bis-O-(p-methylbenzylidene)-d-sorbitol (PDTS). The PP/PDTS system exhibited a sol–gel transition (T gel) at 193 °C. The critical exponent n was nearly equal to 2/3, in agreement with the value predicted by a percolation theory. This critical gel is due to a three-dimensional network structure of PDTS crystals. The elongational viscosity behavior of neat PP followed the linear viscosity growth function + (t), where η + (t) is the shear stress growth function in the linear viscoelastic region. The elongational viscosity of the PP/PDTS system also followed the + (t) above T gel but did not follow the + (t) and exhibited strong strain-softening behavior below T gel. This strain softening can be attributed to breakage of the network structure of PDTS with a critical stress (σ c) of about 104 Pa.  相似文献

At the same solid volume fraction (Φ) the relative viscosity (η r ) of a concentrated noncolloidal bidisperse suspension of hard spherical particles is lower than that of a monodisperse suspension. In this paper a semi-analytical viscosity model of noncolloidal bidisperse suspensions is derived using an integration method. In this model the random loose packing density obtained by computer simulation is taken as the limit of solid volume fraction Φ m which depends upon both the diameter ratio (λ) of large to small particles and the volume fraction of large particles (ξ=Φ l /Φ). This model shows that at high solid volume fraction, Φ > 0.40, both λ and ξ significantly influence η r . For example, at Φ=0.5, it predicts that for monodisperse suspensions η r =70, while for bidisperse suspensions (λ=2 and ξ=0.7) η r =40. Comparison shows that, at high solid volume fraction (0.4–0.5), the relative viscosity predicted by this model is in good agreement with that predicted by the work of Shapiro and Probstein (1992) and of Patlazhan (1993), but is higher than that predicted by the work of others. We investigated the deformation of a strong shear thinning droplet undergoing simple shear flow in a Newtonian liquid. The droplet was an aqueous solution of poly(ethylene oxide) end capped with an alkyl group that forms spherical micelles in aqueous solution. At high concentrations and below a critical temperature, the jammed micelles showed strong shear thinning behaviour, and neither a yield stress nor a Newtonian viscosity was observed. At small shear rates, the droplet rotated and aligned in the flow, but did not deform or only very weakly. At high shear rates, the droplet deformation increased with increasing shear rate. The deformed droplet did not relax after the shear was stopped except for a modest rounding of the edges. For each shear rate, an apparent viscosity, η ad, of the equivalent Newtonian droplet was calculated assuming affine deformation. η ad showed a power law dependence on the capillary number Ca with an exponent of − 1.8 and was larger than the shear viscosity of the micelle suspension at the same shear rates. The results were explained by the existence of a strong gradient of the viscosity inside the droplet leading to a very low viscosity fluid layer near the droplet/matrix interface.  相似文献

Based on the linear theory, stability of viscous disturbances in a supersonic plane Couette flow of a vibrationally excited gas described by a system of linearized equations of two-temperature gas dynamics including shear and bulk viscosity is studied. It is demonstrated that two sets are identified in the spectrum of the problem of stability of plane waves, similar to the case of a perfect gas. One set consists of viscous acoustic modes, which asymptotically converge to even and odd inviscid acoustic modes at high Reynolds numbers. The eigenvalues from the other set have no asymptotic relationship with the inviscid problem and are characterized by large damping decrements. Two most unstable viscous acoustic modes (I and II) are identified; the limits of these modes were considered previously in the inviscid approximation. It is shown that there are domains in the space of parameters for both modes, where the presence of viscosity induces appreciable destabilization of the flow. Moreover, the growth rates of disturbances are appreciably greater than the corresponding values for the inviscid flow, while thermal excitation in the entire considered range of parameters increases the stability of the viscous flow. For a vibrationally excited gas, the critical Reynolds number as a function of the thermal nonequilibrium degree is found to be greater by 12% than for a perfect gas.  相似文献

It is now well know that a small addition of salt to a micellar solution often increases the zero-shear viscosity η0 of the solution, the understanding of the behaviour at high salt content is more questionable. In this situation, addition of more salt induces a decrease of η0. In this experimental work we investigate the linear and non-linear rheological behaviour of a new micellar system: CPCl (surfactant)/NaClO3 (salt). Studies of the evolution of η0 as well as G0 (the elastic modulus) or τR (the relaxation time) are in agreement with the hypothesis of a diminution of the mean micellar length when, after the maximum η0, the salt content increases. In the non-linear behaviour (non-Newtonian viscosity) the evolution of γ˙ c, (which defines the occurrence of the shear thinning) with salt concentration CS is also in agreement with such a hypothesis. We visualized the wake structure of circular disks falling vertically in quiescent water. The evolution of the wake was shown to be similar to the flow patterns behind a fixed disk. The Reynolds number,Re = Ud/ν,is in the range of 40 200.With the ascension of Reynolds numbers,a regular bifurcation occurred at the first critical Reynolds number Re c 1,leading to a transition from an axisymmetric wake structure to a plane symmetric one;A Hopf bifurcation took place at the second critical Reynolds number Re c 2,as the wake structure became unsteady.Plane symmetry of the wake structure was first lost as periodic vortex shedding appeared, but recovered at higher Reynolds number. The difference between the two critical Reynolds numbers was found to be shape-dependent,as we compared our results for thin discs with those for other falling bodies, such as spheres and cones. This observation could be understood in terms of the instability mechanism of the vortical structure.  相似文献

This work applies resolvent analysis to compressible zero-pressure-gradient turbulent boundary layers with freestream Mach numbers between 2 and 4, focusing exclusively on large scale motions in the outer region of the boundary layer. We investigate the effects of Mach number on predicted flow structures, and in particular, look at how such effects may be attributed to changes in mean properties. By leveraging the similarity between the compressible and incompressible resolvent operators, we show that the shape of the streamwise velocity and temperature components of resolvent response modes in the compressible regime can be approximated by applying ideas from wavepacket pseudospectral theory to a simple scalar operator. This gives a means of predicting the shape of resolvent mode components for compressible flows without requiring the singular value decompositions of discretized operators. At a Mach number of 2, we find that accurate results are obtained from this approximation when using the compressible mean velocity profile. At Mach numbers of 3 and 4, the quantitative accuracy of these predictions is improved by also considering a local effective Reynolds number based on the local mean density and viscosity.  相似文献

The relationship between particle size distribution and viscosity of concentrated dispersions is of great industrial importance, since it is the key to get high solids dispersions or suspensions. The problem is treated here experimentally as well as theoretically for the special case of strongly interacting colloidal particles. An empirical model based on a generalized Quemada equation is used to describe η as a function of volume fraction for mono- as well as multimodal dispersions. The pre-factor η˜ accounts for the shear rate dependence of η and does not affect the shape of the η vs φ curves. It is shown here for the first time that colloidal interactions do not show up in the maximum packing parameter and φmax can be calculated from the particle size distribution without further knowledge of the interactions among the suspended particles. On the other hand, the exponent ɛ is controlled by the interactions among the particles. Starting from a limiting value of 2 for non-interacting either colloidal or non-colloidal particles, ɛ generally increases strongly with decreasing particle size. For a given particle system it then can be expressed as a function of the number average particle diameter. As a consequence, the viscosity of bimodal dispersions varies not only with the size ratio of large to small particles, but also depends on the absolute particle size going through a minimum as the size ratio increases. Furthermore, the well-known viscosity minimum for bimodal dispersions with volumetric mixing ratios of around 30/70 of small to large particles is shown to vanish if colloidal interactions contribute significantly. An imaging technique with asymmetric magnification is used to visualise liquid cylindrical jet interface displacements. The wavelet transform technique is applied to the jet interface to localise the perturbations. Scale parameters of the perturbation waves are obtained by a recognition technique. Wave numbers and growth rates are determined for free falling jets. The most representative growth rate of perturbation is measured by a statistical analysis as well as the wavenumber and the initial amplitude of perturbation η0. The concordance between the appearance of a critical velocity U c in the stability curve and a minimum in the growth rate is shown. Important variations of η0 has also been measured in a flow regime where it is usually supposed to be constant. Received: 7 October 1998/Accepted: 13 October 1999  相似文献

The stability of the plane flow of an electrically conducting fluid with respect to small perturbations was studied at large Reynolds numbers in the presence of a longitudinal magnetic field. The dependence of the critical Reynolds number on the electrical conductivity is investigated. At large Reynolds numbers, a new branch of instability and a sudden change in the critical Reynolds numbers is found. __________ Translated from Prikladnaya Mekhanika i Tekhnicheskaya Fizika, Vol. 49, No. 3, pp. 45–53, May–June, 2008.  相似文献

Steady-state viscosities η, steady-state recoverable strains γ rs and characteristic retardation time τ 1/2 were measured for suspensions of monodisperse silicon dioxide (SiO2) spheres in poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) with various volume fractions Φ of the suspended spheres at various creep stresses σ 0. Two different regions are found in plots of η/η m vs γ rs, where η/η m denotes the relative viscosity of the suspensions. In one region, η/η m is proportional to γ rs, while γ rs is independent of η/η m in the other region. In both regions, τ 1/2 is the functions of the shear strain rate in the steady-state of creep test independently of Φ. The origin of the elasticity is related to the ‘maximally distorted’ cages recovered owing to the repulsive interaction between the SiO2 spheres and recovery of the cages in the shear-induced clusters of the suspended spheres.  相似文献

The stress dependencies of the steady-state viscosity η and, particularly, that of the steady-state elastic compliance J e of various linear isotactic polypropylenes (PP) and one long-chain branched PP are investigated using creep-recovery tests. The creep stresses applied range from 2 to 10,000 Pa. In order to discuss the stress-dependent viscosity η and elastic compliance J e with respect to the influence of the weight average molar mass M w and the polydispersity factor M w/M n the PP are characterized by SEC–MALLS. For the linear PP, linear steady-state elastic compliances Je0J_{\rm e}^0 in the range of 10 − 5–10 − 3 Pa − 1 are obtained depending on the molar mass distribution. Je0J_{\rm e}^0 of the LCB-PP is distinctly higher and comes to lie at around 10 − 2 Pa − 1. Je0J_{\rm e}^0 is found to be independent of M w but strongly dependent on polydispersity. η and J e decrease with increasing stress. For the linear PP, J e as a function of the stress τ is temperature independent. The higher M w/M n the stronger is the shear thinning of η and the more pronounced is the stress dependence of J e. For the LCB-PP, the strongest stress dependence of η and J e is observed. Furthermore, for all PP J e reacts more sensitively to an increasing stress than η. A qualitative explanation for the stronger stress dependence of J e compared to η is given by analyzing the contribution of long relaxation times to the viscosity and elasticity.  相似文献

We numerically investigate the wake flow of an afterbody at low Reynolds number in the incompressible and compressible regimes. We found that, with increasing Reynolds number, the initially stable and axisymmetric base flow undergoes a first stationary bifurcation which breaks the axisymmetry and develops two parallel steady counter-rotating vortices. The critical Reynolds number (Re cs) for the loss of the flow axisymmetry reported here is in excellent agreement with previous axisymmetric BiGlobal linear stability (BiGLS) results. As the Reynolds number increases above a second threshold, Re co, we report a second instability defined as a three-dimensional peristaltic oscillation which modulates the vortices, similar to the sphere wake, sharing many points in common with long-wavelength symmetric Crow instability. Both the critical Reynolds number for the onset of oscillation, Re co, and the Strouhal number of the time-periodic limit cycle, Stsat, are substantially shifted with respect to previous axisymmetric BiGLS predictions neglecting the first bifurcation. For slightly larger Reynolds numbers, the wake oscillations are stronger and vortices are shed close to the afterbody base. In the compressible regime, no fundamental changes are observed in the bifurcation process. It is shown that the steady state planar-symmetric solution is almost equal to the incompressible case and that the break of planar symmetry in the vortex shedding regime is retarded due to compressibility effects. Finally, we report the developments of a low frequency which depends on the afterbody aspect ratio, as well as on the Reynolds and on the Mach number, prior to the loss of the planar symmetry of the wake.  相似文献

The effects of fluid viscosity on the kinematics of a small swimmer at low Reynolds numbers are investigated in both experiments and in a simple model. The swimmer is the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans, which is an undulating roundworm approximately 1 mm long. Experiments show that the nematode maintains a highly periodic swimming behavior as the fluid viscosity is varied from 1.0 to 12 mPa s. Surprisingly, the nematode’s swimming speed (~0.35 mm/s) is nearly insensitive to the range of fluid viscosities investigated here. However, the nematode’s beating frequency decreases to an asymptotic value (~1.7 Hz) with increasing fluid viscosity. A simple model is used to estimate the nematode’s Young’s modulus and tissue viscosity. Both material properties increase with increasing fluid viscosity. It is proposed that the increase in Young’s modulus may be associated with muscle contraction in response to larger mechanical loading while the increase in effective tissue viscosity may be associated with the energy necessary to overcome increased fluid drag forces.  相似文献
