We derive the Euler equations from quantum dynamics for a class of fermionic many-body systems. We make two types of assumptions. The first type are physical assumptions on the solution of the Euler equations for the given initial data. The second type are a number of reasonable conjectures on the statistical mechanics and dynamics of the Fermion Hamiltonian.©2003 B. Nachtergaele and H.-T. Yau. In this paper, extending ideas of Witten and Atiyah, we describe some relations of equivariant cohomology on the loop space of a manifold to the path integral representation of the index of the Dirac operator on a twisted spin complex. In particular, the natural extension of the Chern character to the whole loop space is described. Also it is shown that the non-zero free homotopy classes of the loop space have 0 measure for the index measures associated to the index problem. This work was partially supported by the NSF grant MCS-8108814(A02) while the author was visiting the Institute for Advanced Study (Princeton)  相似文献

It is shown that for smooth initial data solutions of the Robinson-Trautman equation (also known as the two-dimensional Calabi equation) exist for all positive “times,” and asymptotically converge to a constant curvature metric. We construct a real compactification of the moduli space of punctured rational algebraic curves and show how its geometry yields operads governing homotopy Lie algebras, gravity algebras and Batalin-Vilkovisky algebras. These algebras appeared recently in the context of string theory, and we give a simple deduction of these algebraic structures from the formal axioms of conformal field theory and string theory. To the memory of Ansgar SchnizerResearch supported by an NSF Postdoctoral Research FellowshipResearch supported in part by NSF grant DMS-9206929 and a Research and Study Leave from the University of North Carolina-Chapel HillResearch supported in part by NSF grant DMS-9108269.A03  相似文献

We generalize the Kodaira Embedding Theorem and Chow's Theorem to the context of families of complex supermanifolds. In particular, we show that every family of super Riemann surfaces is a family of projective superalgebraic varieties.Research supported in part by NSF grant DMS-8704401Research supported in part by NSF grant DMS-4253943Research also supported in part by NSF grant DMS-4253943  相似文献

Witten's 2+1 dimensional Chern-Simons theory is exactly solvable. We compute the partition function, a topological invariant of 3-manifolds, on generalized Seifert spaces. Thus we test the path integral using the theory of 3-manifolds. In particular, we compare the exact solution with the asymptotic formula predicted by perturbation theory. We conclude that this path integral works as advertised and gives an effective topological invariant. The first author is supported by NSF grant DMS-8805684, an Alfred P. It is proven that integral expressions for conformal correlators insl(2) WZW model found in [SV] satisfy certain natural algebraic equations. This implies that the above integrals really take their values in spaces of conformal blocks. The second author was supported in part by the NSF grant DMS-9202280. We define a homotopy algebra associated to classical open-closed strings. We call it an open-closed homotopy algebra (OCHA). It is inspired by Zwiebach's open-closed string field theory and also is related to the situation of Kontsevich's deformation quantization. We show that it is actually a homotopy invariant notion; for instance, the minimal model theorem holds. Also, we show that our open-closed homotopy algebra gives us a general scheme for deformation of open string structures (A-algebras) by closed strings (L-algebras). H. Consider the random sequential packing model with infinite input and in any dimension. When the input consists of non-zero volume convex solids we show that the total number of solids accepted over cubes of volume λ is asymptotically normal as λ → ∞. We provide a rate of approximation to the normal and show that the finite dimensional distributions of the packing measures converge to those of a mean zero generalized Gaussian field. The method of proof involves showing that the collection of accepted solids satisfies the weak spatial dependence condition known as stabilization. We consider thed-dimensional Ising model with a nearest neighbor ferromagnetic interactionJ(d)=1/4d. We show that asd the+phase (and the — phase) approaches a product measure with density given by the mean field approximation. In particular the spontaneous magnetization converges to its mean field value. A similar result holds for the unique Gibbs measure of the system subject to an external fieldh0.Part of this work was done while this author was visiting Rutgers University, supported by NSF grant DMR-86-12369 and Princeton University, support by NSF grant PHY-85-15288-A01Partially supported by a NSF grant to Cornell UniversityPartially supported by NSF grant DMR 86-12369Supported by the U.S. Army Research Office through the Mathematical Sciences Institute of Cornell and by a NSF grant to Cornell University. We construct allSU(2) Yang-Mills instantons onS 4 that admit a certain symmetry (“quadrupole symmetry”). This is accomplished by an equivariant version of the “ADHM monad” classification of instantons. This work is part of an attempt to better understand the structure of non-self-dual Yang-Mills connections with the same symmetry. In this paper, we give a new genus-3 topological recursion relation for Gromov-Witten invariants of compact symplectic manifolds. This formula also applies to intersection numbers on moduli spaces of spin curves. A by-product of the proof of this formula is a new relation in the tautological ring of the moduli space of 1-pointed genus-3 stable curves. The symplectic leaves of this structure are related to the orbits of the corresponding real semisimple group on the complex flag manifold.Acknowledgements We thank Sam Evens for many useful discussions. Suppose that the integers are assigned i.i.d. random variables { x } (taking values in the unit interval), which serve as an environment. This environment defines a random walk {X k } (called a RWRE) which, when atx, moves one step to the right with probability x , and one step to the left with probability 1- x . Solomon (1975) determined the almost-sure asymptotic speed (=rate of escape) of a RWRE. For certain environment distributions where the drifts 2 x -1 can take both positive and negative values, we show that the chance of the RWRE deviating below this speed has a polynomial rate of decay, and determine the exponent in this power law; for environments which allow only positive and zero drifts, we show that these large-deviation probabilities decay like exp(–Cn 1/3). This differs sharply from the rates derived by Greven and den-Hollander (1994) for large deviation probabilities conditioned on the environment. As a by product we also provide precise tail and moment estimates for the total population size in a Branching Process with Random Environment.Partially supported by NSF DMS-9209712 and DMS-9403553 grants, by a US-ISRAEL BSF grant and by the S. and N. Stability of coulomb systems with magnetic fields   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The ground state energy of an atom in the presence of an external magnetic filedB (with the electron spin-field interaction included) can be arbitrarity negative whenB is arbitrarily large. We inquire whether stability can be restored by adding the self energy of the field, B 2. For a hydrogenic like atom we prove that there is a critical nuclear charge,z c , such that the atom is stable forz<z c and unstable forz>z c .Work partically supported by U.S. National Scinece Foundation grant DMS-8405264 during the author's stay at the Institute for Advanced Study, Princeton, NJ, USAWork partially supported by U.S. National Science Foundation grant PHY-8116101-A03Work partially supported by U.S. and Swiss National Science Foundation Cooperative Science Program INT-8503858. The spectrum of the kinematic dynamo operator for an ideally conducting fluid and the spectrum of the corresponding group acting in the space of continuous divergence free vector fields on a compact Riemannian manifold are described. We prove that the spectrum of the kinematic dynamo operator is exactly one vertical strip whose boundaries can be determined in terms of the Lyapunov-Oseledets exponents with respect to all ergodic measures for the Eulerian flow. Also, we prove that the spectrum of the corresponding group is obtained from the spectrum of its generator by exponentiation. In particular, the growth bound for the group coincides with the spectral bound for the generator.supported by the NSF grant DMS-9303767supported by the NSF grant DMS-9400518 and by the Summer Research Fellowship of the University of Missourisupported by the NSF grant DMS-9201357  相似文献

This article is devoted to the asymptotic analysis of a system of coupled kinetic and fluid equations, namely the Vlasov-Fokker-Planck equation and a compressible Navier-Stokes equation. Such a system is used, for example, to model fluid-particle interactions arising in sprays, aerosols or sedimentation problems. The asymptotic regime corresponding to a strong drag force and a strong Brownian motion is studied and the convergence toward a two phase macroscopic model is proved. The proof relies on a relative entropy method. A. Mellet was partially supported by NSF grant DMS-0456647.  相似文献
