Spitzer’s identity describes the position of a reflected random walk over time in terms of a bivariate transform. Among its many applications in probability theory are congestion levels in queues and random walkers in physics. We present a derivation of Spitzer’s identity for random walks with bounded jumps to the left, only using basic properties of analytic functions and contour integration. The main novelty is a reversed approach that recognizes a factored polynomial expression as the outcome of Cauchy’s formula.  相似文献

We investigate an mth-order discrete problem with additional conditions, described by m linearly independent linear functionals. We find the solution to this problem and present a formula and the existence condition of Green??s function if the general solution of a homogeneous equation is known. We obtain a relation between Green??s functions of two nonhomogeneous problems. It allows us to find Green??s function for the same equation, but with different additional conditions. The obtained results are applied to problems with nonlocal boundary conditions.  相似文献

A longstanding open question of Connes asks whether any finite von Neumann algebra embeds into an ultraproduct of finite-dimensional matrix algebras.As of yet,algebras verified to satisfy the Connes’s embedding property belong to just a few special classes (e.g.,amenable algebras and free group factors).In this article,we prove that von Neumann algebras satisfying Popa’s co-amenability have Connes’s embedding property.  相似文献

We deal with finite simple groups G with the property π(G) ⊆ {2, 3, 5, 7, 11, 13, 17}, where π(G) is the set of all prime divisors of the order of a group G. In (Kaniuth and Kumar in Math. Proc. Camb. Phil. Soc. 131, 487–494, 2001) Hardy’s uncertainty principle for was generalized to connected and simply connected nilpotent Lie groups. In this paper, we extend it further to connected nilpotent Lie groups with non-compact centre. Concerning the converse, we show that Hardy’s theorem fails for a connected nilpotent Lie group G which admits a square integrable irreducible representation and that this condition is necessary if the simply connected covering group of G satisfies the flat orbit condition.  相似文献

Fréchet’s classical isometric embedding argument has evolved to become a major tool in the study of metric spaces. An important example of a Fréchet embedding is Bourgain's embedding [4]. The authors have recently shown [2] that for every ε>0, anyn-point metric space contains a subset of size at leastn 1−ε which embeds into ℓ2 with distortion . The embedding used in [2] is non-Fréchet, and the purpose of this note is to show that this is not coincidental. Specifically, for every ε>0, we construct arbitrarily largen-point metric spaces, such that the distortion of any Fréchet embedding into ℓp on subsets of size at leastn 1/2+ε is Ω((logn)1/p ). In this paper, we investigate a generalized discrete Green’s function that describes the general least squares solution of every second-order discrete problem with two nonlocal conditions. We develop the problem where the necessary and sufficient existence condition of ordinary discrete Green’s function is not satisfied. Some examples are also presented.  相似文献

We investigate the properties of an integral operator T with a Cauchy kernel. The operator acts from L (Γ, μ), where Γ is a Van Koch curve, to the space of functions ? → ?. We prove that the range of T is nontrivial and lies in the space AC(Γ) of functions continuous in ?, vanishing at ∞, and analytic outside Γ. We also show that T is injective and compact while satisfying some special functional equation. These results may be regarded as a natural continuation of our research on the problem of AC-removability of quasiconformal curves whose solution was announced in [1] for the first time and supplemented later with some other properties of Van Koch’s curves [2, 3]. In this paper the problem is discussed in a more general setting and, in particular, all important details lacking in [1] are given. Some open problems are formulated.  相似文献

where S is a semigroup, \(\tau \) is an involution of S and \(\mu \) is a measure that is a linear combination of Dirac measures \((\delta _{z_{i}})_{i\in I}\), such that for all \(i\in I\), \(z_{i}\) is contained in the center of S. We express the solutions of the first equation by means of multiplicative functions on S, and we prove that the solutions of the second equation are closely related to the solutions of d’Alembert’s classic functional equation with involution.

In this article, we prove a conjecture of Thompson for an infinite class of simple groups of Lie type E 7(q). More precisely, we show that every finite group G with the properties Z(G) = 1 and cs(G) = cs(E 7(q)) is necessarily isomorphic to E 7(q), where cs(G) and Z(G) are the set of lengths of conjugacy classes of G and the center of G respectively.  相似文献
