Abstract— The encapsulation of FMN in surfactant entrapped water pools resulted into specific interactions of FMN with the polar head groups, the entrapped water molecules and the outer apolar solvent. Two positively charged surfactant/solvent systems were employed: dodecyl ammonium propionate (DAP) in toluene and hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) in chloroform/ n -octane (6:5, vol/vol). Also a surfactant with a negatively charged polar head group, sodium bis (2-ethylhexyl) sulfosuccinate (AOT) in n -octane, was used. In CTAB and especially DAP reversed micellar systems the light absorption spectra revealed the localization of the flavin in a more apolar environment, while in AOT reversed micelles FMN appeared to reside mainly in the core of the water pool. The fluorescence spectra showed unresolved bands, which were blue-shifted in DAP and CTAB reversed micelles as compared to the spectra of aqueous FMN solutions. The fluorescence decay kinetics of FMN in enclosed water droplets is non-exponential. The heterogeneity can be explained assuming incomplete relaxation of partly immobilized water molecules during the lifetime of the excited singlet state. The relatively high anisotropy of the fluorescence of FMN in encapsulated water indicated a higher viscosity than in bulk water. This was confirmed by anisotropy decay measurements of FMN in DAP and AOT entrapped water, for which the rotational correlation times were much longer than for FMN in plain water.  相似文献

The aggregation behavior of the DNA marker dye thiazole orange (TO), has been investigated in two types of surfactant assemblies, namely, premicelles/micelles of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and pre reverse micelles/reverse micelles of sodium bis(2-ethylhexyl) sulfosuccinate (AOT). In the case of an SDS/water system, absorption spectral changes of TO signify the formation of H-aggregates and H-dimers of the dye at premicellar concentrations, which subsequently convert to the monomeric form beyond the critical micellar concentration (cmc). Interestingly, the observed changes in the absorption and emission characteristics due to the surfactant-induced formation of H-aggregates/dimers of TO are found to be useful to estimate the surfactant concentration parameters for premicellar aggregation of SDS. In the case of an AOT/n-heptane system, similarly, H-aggregates/dimers are observed at low AOT concentrations, below the cmc. However, in this case, the H-dimers persist even beyond the cmc. This is attributed to the strong tendency of TO for self-aggregation and its favorable electrostatic interactions with the AOT head groups. With increasing water content in the AOT reverse micelles, the hydration of the dye leads to the conversion of H-dimers to the monomeric form. The steady-state fluorescence results are nicely corroborated with those from time-resolved fluorescence studies and demonstrate the interesting behavior of the surfactant-induced aggregation of TO dye.  相似文献

Abstract— The fluorescence lifetime of a partially-purified membrane fraction containing flavin and b-type cytochrome, presumably on the same protein, has been described. Possible implications of the blue light photoreactivity of the flavin as an assay, on the basis of its short fluorescence lifetime (about 1.37 ns), has been discussed.  相似文献

Photophysical properties of 3-acetyl-4-oxo-6,7-dihydro-12H-indolo[2,3-a]quinolizine (AODIQ), a bioactive molecule, has been investigated in well-characterized, monodispersed biomimicking nanocavities formed by sodium bis(2-ethylhexyl)sulfosuccinate (AOT) in heptane using steady-state and picosecond time resolved fluorescence and fluorescence anisotropy. The emission behavior of AODIQ is very much dependent upon the water/surfactant mole ratio (W), i.e., on the water pool size of the reverse micellar core. AODIQ exhibits a sharp decrease in fluorescence anisotropy with increasing W, implying that the overall motional restriction experienced by the molecule is decreased with increased hydration. Some of the depth-dependent relevant fluorescence parameters, namely, fluorescence maxima and fluorescence anisotropy (r), have been monitored for exploiting the distribution and microenvironment around the probe in the reverse micelles. Fluorescence spectral position and fluorescence quenching studies suggest that the probe does not penetrate into the reverse micellar core; rather it binds at the interfacial region. Quantitaive estimates of the micropolarity and microviscosity at the binding sites of the probe molecule have been determined as a function of W.  相似文献

The stability of dispersions in polar organic media was reviewed comparing with that of in aqueous and non-polar media. Structure and properties of the double layer of AgI in water-ethylene glycol were studied and the stability of the dispersions was related to the study of the double layer.Coagulation concentrations of Ag,AgI and α-FeOOH dispersions in methanol, ethanol 1,2-propanol and acetone by the addition of electrolytes were determined.Coagulation by monovalent counterions is due to double layer compression. With bi- and multivalent counterions or in low dielectric constant-solvents coagulation is primarily caused by charge neutralization. The effect of an ionic surfactant, AOT on the stability of TiO2 or α-Fe2O3 in water-p-dioxane mixtures was studied. AOT behaved as a coagulating agent in polar media ( ϵ = 10–50) , though it worked as a dispersing agent in non-polar (dioxane) and water rich media. AOT accordingly coagulated the dispersion a carbon black in 2-butanone, though a nonionic surfactant did not so. Desolvation from the particle surface is considered to be an important origin of coagulation by AOT in polar media, because AOT is not adsorbed on particles and comsiderably dissociates into ions in 2-butanone.  相似文献

We have found that both electrostatic and hydrophobic interactions are involved in the ability of the protein alpha-lactalbumin (alpha-LA) to affect the self-assembly of the anionic surfactant sodium bis(ethylhexyl) sulfosuccinate (AOT, 3.5 wt %) in equivolume mixtures of organic and aqueous solutions. The composition and size of AOT phase structures that form in the presence of 0.35 wt % protein were evaluated as a function of pH and ionic strength. In the absence of protein, AOT forms water-in-oil microemulsion droplets for all pH and salt concentrations studied here. The presence of the protein in the water-in-oil microemulsion phase boosts water solubilization and droplet size, as the spontaneous curvature of the surfactant interface becomes less negative. Aggregates of protein, surfactant, and oil also form in the water-continuous phase. The size and composition of structures in both phases can be tuned in the presence of protein by varying the pH and ionic strength. alpha-LA induces the appearance of an anisotropic surfactant phase at pH <5.8. At intermediate salt concentrations, a third isotropic, viscous aqueous phase appears that contains 55-60% of the protein, 10-14% of the surfactant, and significant amounts of oil. Circular dichroism and fluorescence spectroscopy indicate that the protein contains enhanced alpha-helical secondary structure when self-assembling with surfactant, and has a loosened tertiary structure. The protein does not interact with the surfactant as an unfolded random coil. Although the conformation of alpha-LA in aqueous salt solutions is known to depend on pH, when self-assembling with AOT the protein adopts a structure whose features are quite pH insensitive, and likely reflect an intrinsic interaction with the interface.  相似文献

Surface tension of TX-100 and AOT was measured at 25 °C in water + propylene carbonate (PC) media containing 5, 10, 15, and 18 wt.% PC. Micellization does not take place in neat PC. Critical micelle concentration (cmc) of TX-100 increases with increase in percentage of PC, while that of AOT passes through a minimum around 5% PC. cmc values of AOT in 15% and 18% PC were obtained from the fluorescence emission spectra of pyrene, but not from surface tension data. Counter ion binding constant of AOT has two values in 5% PC as in water, whereas it has single value in mixed solvents containing 10% or more of PC. With increase in surfactant concentration, variation of aggregation numbers of TX-100 and AOT show opposite trends. The recently reported solvophobicity index works in the present system also.  相似文献

Mixtures of a hydrophobic triblock copolymer (L121, PEO5PPO68PEO5) and a hydrophobic anionic surfactant (AOT, Sodium bis(2-ethylhexyl)sulfosuccinate), each alone forming turbid vesicular solutions in water, aggregate to produce a thermodynamically stable, transparent, and isotropic solution. Mixed AOT/L121 aggregates could be confirmed by fluorescence, surface tension, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and isothermal titration calorimetry. In an isotropic region, where mixed aggregates are formed, there is a synergistic interaction between monomers of AOT and L121 in the mixture. In addition, small-angle neutron scattering experiments provided evidence that mixed aggregates have the shape of either spheres (with a certain polydispersity) or very short ellipsoids (axial ratio below 2), confirming a transition from giant multilamellar vesicles to small aggregates upon mixing the two hydrophobic amphiphiles. Upon dilution, the morphology changes to disk-like. From an examination of the results of all the methods the peculiar behavior of the mixed AOT/L121 system is explained.  相似文献

The interactions between sodium bis(2‐ethylhexyl) sulfosuccinae (AOT) and two nonionic water‐soluble polymers, including polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP) and polyethylene glycol (PEG) have been investigated by using isothermal titration microcalorimetry in aqueous solutions at 298.15 K. The results show that the critical aggregation concentration, which corresponding to the first turning point in the curve of experimental interaction heat versus concentration of the surfactant, is lower than the critical micellar concentration (cmc), confirming the existence of polymer‐surfactant interactions. The value of cac is not sensitive to the relative amount of polymer in low concentration range of the polymer. The mono‐layer saturated adsorption concentration, which corresponding to the second turning point, rises as the polymer concentration is increased. The interaction between PVP and AOT is stronger than that between PEG and AOT. The results also indicate that the aggregation of AOT in water and polymers solutions is entropically driven. The observed thermal effects have been interpreted in terms of the interactions of the polymer molecules with AOT monomers or the molecular clusters. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Excited-state proton transfer (ESPT) of 2-(2'-pyridyl)benzimidazole (2PBI) in reverse micelles has been studied by steady-state and time-resolved fluorescence spectroscopy. The nanometer sized water pool in the n-heptane/Aerosol OT (AOT)/water microemulsion is found to promote tautomer emission of this probe, as is evident from the emergence of a Stokes shifted band at 450 nm at the expense of the normal emission band on increasing the water content of the system. In the nonaquous microemulsion with a methanol core, the normal emission is quenched but no tautomer emission is obtained. With an acetonitrile core, there is no change in emission properties. Similarly, there is no evidence of ESPT in Triton X-100 reverse micelles. This indicates the requirement of ESPT to occur in microheterogeneous media; the medium should be a ternary system comprised of water and a hydrophobic phase separated by a negatively charged interface. In the microemulsions with an aqueous core, the fluorescence decays of 2PBI at the red end exhibit rise times of 0.8 ns and the time-resolved area-normalized emission spectra (TRANES) exhibit an isoemissive point, indicating slow dynamics of the two-state ESPT of 2PBI in aqueous AOT reverse micelles. The origin of the selective enhancement in AOT microemulsions as well as the slow dynamics is explored using fluorescence spectroscopic techniques, with support from quantum chemical calculation.  相似文献

Photoisomerization of two carbocyanine derivatives has been examined in bis(2-ethylhexyl) sodium sulfosuccinate (AOT) reverse micelles to understand the factors that govern this process in the interfacial region of organized assemblies. To this effect, fluorescence lifetimes and quantum yields of 3,3(')-diethyloxadicarbocyanine iodide and merocyanine 540 have been measured in AOT∕isooctane∕water and AOT∕cyclohexane∕water reverse micellar systems as a function of the mole ratio of water to the surfactant, W. The nonradiative rate constants, which have been identified as the rates of photoisomerization for these solutes, were obtained from the experimentally measured parameters. The steady rise and subsequent saturation observed in the nonradiative rate constants upon increasing W has been rationalized in terms of micellar packing. An inverse correlation has been obtained between the nonradiative rate constants and the critical packing parameter, indicating that the interfacial friction experienced by the solute molecule is essentially described by this parameter.  相似文献

The mixture of Au@CdS and CdS nanoparticles were obtained by reversed micelles method. n-Dodecanethiol was used to replace dioctylsulfosuccinate sodium salt (AOT) as a protector, and the surfactant AOT was washed away by water. By adding enthanol of different quantity, the polarity of dispersed medium was regulated and the solubility of Au@CdS and CdS nanoparticles in dispersed medium was adjusted. Consequently, the Au@CdS and CdS nanoparticles were separated effectively. Ultraviolet absorption spectra, transmission electronic microscopy (TEM), energy-dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX), and fluorescence spectra were used to characterize Au@CdS nanoparticles.  相似文献

The kinetics of hydrolysis of 2-naphthyl acetate (2-NA) catalyzed by alpha-chymotrypsin (alpha-CT), in reverse micellar solutions formed by glycerol (GY)-water (38% v/v) mixture/sodium bis(2-ethylhexyl)sulfosuccinate (AOT)/n-heptane has been determined by spectroscopic measurements. To compare the efficiency of this reaction with that observed in micelles with water in the core, as well as in the corresponding homogeneous media, the reaction was also studied in water/AOT/n-heptane reverse micellar solutions and in both homogeneous media (water and GY-water, 38% v/v mixture). In every media, alpha-CT was characterized by the absorption and emission spectra, the fluorescence lifetimes, and the fluorescence anisotropy of its tryptophan residues. The effect of AOT concentration on the kinetic parameters obtained in the micellar systems was determined, at a constant molar ratio of the inner polar solvent and surfactant. Moreover, the data obtained allowed the evaluation of the 2-NA partition constant between the organic and the micellar pseudophase. It is shown that the addition of GY to the micelle interior results in an increase in the catalytic properties of alpha-CT. The fluorescence anisotropy studies in the different media show that the addition of GY increases the viscosity as compared with the aqueous systems. It seems that the GY addition to the reverse micellar aggregates results in a decrease of the conformational mobility of alpha-CT, which leads to an increase of the enzyme stability and activity.  相似文献

The behavior of water entrapped in reverse micelles (RMs) formed by two catanionic ionic liquid‐like surfactants, benzyl‐n‐hexadecyldimethylammonium 1,4‐bis‐2‐ethylhexylsulfosuccinate (AOT‐BHD) and cetyltrimethylammonium 1,4‐bis‐2‐ethylhexylsulfosuccinate (AOT‐CTA), was investigated by using dynamic (DLS) and static (SLS) light scattering, FTIR, and 1H NMR spectroscopy techniques. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report in which AOT‐CTA has been used to create RMs and encapsulate water. DLS and SLS results revealed the formation of RMs in benzene and the interaction of water with the RM interface. From FTIR and 1H NMR spectroscopy data, a difference in the magnitude of the water–catanionic surfactant interaction at the interface is observed. For the AOT‐BHD RMs, a strong water–surfactant interaction can be invoked whereas for AOT‐CTA this interaction seems to be weaker. Consequently, more water molecules interact with the interface in AOT‐BHD RMs with a completely disrupted hydrogen‐bond network, than in AOT‐CTA RMs in which the water structure is partially preserved. We suggest that the benzyl group present in the BHD+ moiety in AOT‐BHD is responsible for the behavior of the catanionic interface in comparison with the interface created in AOT‐CTA. These results show that a simple change in the cationic component in the catanionic surfactant promotes remarkable changes in the RMs interface with interesting consequences, in particular when using the systems as nanoreactors.  相似文献

Many fluorescent chromophores have been employed to investigate the nature and dynamics of the water confined in reverse micelles (RMs). However, some questions remain as to the location of a probe in a RM and the diameter of the RM at which the physical characteristic of the water inside RMs becomes similar to that of bulk water. In this work, we systematically studied the photophysics of IR125 and C152 in AOT RMs at different w(0) by means of static absorption and fluorescence spectroscopy as well as time-resolved fluorescence spectroscopy. We obtained the absorption maxima, fluorescence emission maxima, fluorescence lifetime, and reorientation time of IR125 and C152 in AOT RMs at corresponding w(0). We found that all obtained photophysical parameters of IR125 and C152 in AOT RMs as a function of w(0) have a distinct changeover point around w(0) = 8, indicating that there is a dramatic change in the nature of the water confined in AOT RMs around w(0) = 8. The observed changeover point around w(0) = 8 is well in agreement with the Satpati's report (ChemPhysChem, 2009, 10, 2966). In addition, we observed that the measured reorientation time of IR125 in AOT RMs increases with the increase of w(0), which is opposite to the trend of change in the measured reorientation time of C152 in AOT RMs with the increase of w(0). We found that IR125 prefers to reside in the water pool of AOT RMs and that C152 prefers to reside in the outer side of the interfacial region or the nonpolar n-heptane phase of AOT RMs. Furthermore, we found that the time-resolved fluorescence anisotropy of IR125 in smaller w(0) AOT RMs primarily measures the reorientation of RMs and the time-resolved fluorescence anisotropy of IR125 in larger w(0) AOT RMs measures the reorientation of IR125 in the water pool confined in RMs. This work demonstrated that IR125 is an excellent probe to study the nature and dynamics of the water confined in AOT RMs.  相似文献

An atomistic molecular dynamics (MD) simulation has been carried out to investigate the structural and dynamical properties of a monolayer of the anionic surfactant sodium bis(2-ethyl-1-hexyl) sulfosuccinate (aerosol-OT or AOT) adsorbed at the air/water interface. The simulation is performed at room temperature and at a surface coverage corresponding to that at its critical micelle concentration (78 A(2)/molecule). The estimated thickness of the adsorbed layer is in good agreement with neutron reflection data. The study shows that the surfactants exhibit diffusive motion in the plane of the interface. It is observed that the surfactant monolayer has a strong influence in restricting both the translational and reorientational motions of the water molecules close to the interface. A drastic difference in the dipolar reorientational motion of water molecules in the aqueous layer is observed with a small variation of the distance from the surfactant headgroups. It has been observed that the water molecules in the first hydration layer (region 1) form strong hydrogen bonds with surfactant headgoups. This results in the slower structural relaxation of water-water hydrogen bonds in the first hydration layer compared to that in the pure bulk water. Most interestingly, we notice that the water molecules present in the layer immediately after the first hydration layer form weaker hydrogen bonds and thus relax faster than even pure bulk water.  相似文献

A spectroscopic investigation of the vibrational dynamics of water in a geometrically confined environment is presented. Reverse micelles of the ternary microemulsion H2O/AOT/n-octane (AOT = bis-2-ethylhexyl sulfosuccinate or aerosol-OT) with diameters ranging from 1 to 10 nm are used as a model system for nanoscopic water droplets surrounded by a soft-matter boundary. Femtosecond nonlinear infrared spectroscopy in the OH-stretching region of H2O fully confirms the core/shell model, in which the entrapped water molecules partition onto two molecular subensembles: a bulk-like water core and a hydration layer near the ionic surfactant headgroups. These two distinct water species display different relaxation kinetics, as they do not exchange vibrational energy. The observed spectrotemporal ultrafast response exhibits a local character, indicating that the spatial confinement influences approximately one molecular layer located near the water-amphiphile boundary. The core of the encapsulated water droplet is similar in its spectroscopic properties to the bulk phase of liquid water, i.e., it does not display any true confinement effects such as droplet-size-dependent vibrational lifetimes or rotational correlation times. Unlike in bulk water, no intermolecular transfer of OH-stretching quanta occurs among the interfacial water molecules or from the hydration shell to the bulk-like core, indicating that the hydrogen bond network near the H2O/AOT interface is strongly disrupted.  相似文献
