The wake of a surface-mounted finite-height circular cylinder and the associated vortex patterns are strongly dependent on the cylinder aspect ratio and the thickness of the boundary layer on the ground plane relative to the dimensions of the cylinder. Above a critical aspect ratio, the mean wake is characterized by streamwise tip vortex structures and Kármán vortex shedding from the sides of the cylinder. Below a critical aspect ratio, a unique mean wake structure is observed. Recent experimental studies in the literature that used phase-averaged techniques, as well as recent numerical simulations, have led to an improved physical understanding of the near-wake vortex flow patterns. However, the flow above the free end of the finite circular cylinder, and its relationship to the near wake, has not been systematically studied. The effects of aspect ratio and boundary layer thickness on the free-end flow field are also not completely understood, nor has the influence of Reynolds number on the free-end flow field been fully explored. Common features associated with the free end include separation from the leading edge, a mean recirculation zone containing a prominent cross-stream arch (or mushroom) vortex, and reattachment onto the free-surface. Other flow features that remain to be clarified include a separation bubble near the leading edge, one or two cross-stream vortices within this separation bubble, the origins of the streamwise tip or trailing vortices, and various critical points in the near-surface flow topology. This paper reviews the current understanding of the flow above the free end of a surface-mounted finite-height circular cylinder, with a focus on models of the flow field, surface oil flow visualization studies, pressure and heat flux distributions on the free-end surface, measurements of the local velocity field, and numerical simulations, found in the literature.

In this work, we investigate the dynamics of the near wake in a turbulent flow going past a circular cylinder with/without particles at a moderate Reynolds number using a direct numerical simulation method. High-order finite-deference schemes are applied to solve for the bulk fluid properties, and a Lagrangian approach is adopted to track the individual particles. The single-phase flow is analysed and validated using previous experimental data. Two converged states, U- and V-shaped, are observed in the near wake, which are consistent with the experimental results. For the two-phase flow, the addition of smaller particles shortens the length of the recirculation region and causes a V-shaped profile to form behind the circular cylinder. Furthermore, the particles increase the drag force from the circular cylinder and suppress the vortex shedding frequency. An increase in the turbulent statistics in the very near wake and a decrease in the turbulent statistics further downstream are also observed.

The wake characteristics of unconfined flows over triangular prisms of different aspect ratios have been numerically analysed in the present work. For this purpose, a fixed Cartesian-grid based numerical technique that involves the porous medium approach to mimic the effect of solid blockage has been utilised. Correspondingly, laminar flow simulations ranging from the sub-critical regime (before the onset of vortex shedding) to the super-critical regime have been considered here within the limits of two-dimensionality. In the sub-critical regime, correlations relating the wake bubble length with Reynolds number (Re) have been proposed for various aspect ratios. Also, the effects of aspect ratio and Reynolds Number on the drag force coefficient (CD) have been characterised for two different geometrical orientations of the prism (base or apex facing the flow). Subsequently, the critical Reynolds number at the onset of vortex shedding has been predicted for each of the aspect ratio considered, by an extrapolation procedure. The unsteady flow characteristics of the super-critical regime are finally highlighted for different aspect ratios and triangular orientations considered in the study.

Passive wake control behind a circular cylinder in uniform flow is studied by numerical simulation for ReD ranging from 80 to 300. Two small control cylinders, with diameter d/D=1/8, are placed at x/D=0.5 and y/D=±0.6. Unlike the 1990 results of Strykowski and Sreenivasan, in the present study, the vortex street behind the main cylinder still exists but the fluctuating lift and the form drag on the main cylinder reduces significantly and monotonously as the Reynolds number increases from 80 to 300. Obstruction of the control cylinders to the incoming flow deflects part of the fluid to pass through the gap between the main and control cylinders, forming two symmetric streams. These streams not only eliminate the flow separation along the rear surface of the main cylinder, they also merge toward the wake centerline to create an advancing momentum in the immediate near-wake region. These two effects significantly reduce the wake width behind the main cylinder and lead to monotonous decrease of the form drag as the Reynolds number increases. As the Reynolds number gets higher, a large amount of the downstream advancing momentum significantly delays the vortex formation farther downstream, leading to a more symmetric flow structure in the near-wake region of the main cylinder. As the Reynolds number increases from 80 to 300, both increasing symmetry of the flow structure in the near-wake and significant delay of the vortex formation are the main reasons for the fluctuating lift to decrease monotonously.

The wake behind T-shaped intersecting flat plates has been studied by direct numerical simulations and compared with the wake behind intersecting plates forming a cross. The Reynolds number based on the uniform inflow velocity and the plate width d was 1000. Similar to the cross-plate the vortex shedding was suppressed in a 4d wide intersection region with a substantial base suction pressure reduction. Shear-layer (K-H) instabilities have been observed and its characteristic frequency obtained. In contrast to the cross-plate, a main feature of the mean wake structure behind the T-plate is the formation of two symmetrically positioned swirling vortices close to the internal corners of the T. This was examined by considering pressure contours and the turbulent production terms of mean streamwise vorticity. In spite of some similarities, major features of the wake behind the T-plate turned out to be distinctly different from the wake behind a cross-plate configuration.

A detailed experimental study is performed on the separated flow structures around a low aspect-ratio circular cylinder (pin-fin) in a practical configuration of liquid cooling channel. Distinctive features of the present arrangement are the confinement of the cylinder at both ends, water flow at low Reynolds numbers (Re = 800, 1800, 2800), very high core flow turbulence and undeveloped boundary layers at the position of the obstacle. The horseshoe vortex system at the junctions between the cylinder and the confining walls and the near wake region behind the obstacle are deeply investigated by means of Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV). Upstream of the cylinder, the horseshoe vortex system turns out to be perturbed by vorticity bursts from the incoming boundary layers, leading to aperiodical vortex oscillations at Re = 800 or to break-away and secondary vorticity eruptions at the higher Reynolds numbers. The flow structures in the near wake show a complex three-dimensional behaviour associated with a peculiar mechanism of spanwise mass transport. High levels of free-stream turbulence trigger an early instabilization of the shear layers and strong Bloor–Gerrard vortices are observed even at Re = 800. Coalescence of these vortices and intense spanwise flow inhibit the alternate primary vortex shedding for time periods whose length and frequency increase as the Reynolds number is reduced. The inhibition of alternate vortex shedding for long time periods is finally related to the very large wake characteristic lengths and to the low velocity fluctuations observed especially at the lowest Reynolds number.

A numerical study on the flow past a square cylinder placed parallel to a wall, which is moving at the speed of the far field has been made. Flow has been investigated in the laminar Reynolds number (based on the cylinder length) range. We have studied the flow field for different values of the cylinder to wall separation length. The governing unsteady Navier–Stokes equations are discretized through the finite volume method on a staggered grid system. A SIMPLE type of algorithm has been used to compute the discretized equations iteratively. A shear layer of negative vortex generates along the surface of the wall, which influences the vortex shedding behind the cylinder. The flow‐field is distinct from the flow in presence of a stationary wall. An alternate vortex shedding occurs for all values of gap height in the unsteady regime of the flow. The strong positive vortex pushes the negative vortex upwards in the wake. The gap flow in the undersurface of the cylinder is strong and the velocity profile overshoots. The cylinder experiences a downward force for certain values of the Reynolds number and gap height. The drag and lift are higher at lower values of the Reynolds number. In high flow velocity areas like those suitable for marine energy application, bathymetry variations create strong velocity fluctuations in the water column. It is therefore essential to characterize the turbulence evolution in the wake of seabed elements which may impact the loads on tidal turbines. For that purpose, experiments are carried out in a flume tank with Re as high as achievable in Froude similitude, with bathymetry variations experimentally represented with various wall-mounted square elements of height H: a cylinder or a cube as unitary obstacles and combinations of these elements followed by an inclined floor to resemble smooth bathymetry changes. The onset flow is a simple boundary layer profile with height 1.3 H and a low turbulence intensity. PIV and LDV measurements are used to investigate the wake past all test cases in order to distinguish high floor elevation cases (unitary obstacles) from mean roughness effect (obstacle combinations). Results show that the obstacle combinations produce a wake less extended than for a single wide cylinder that produces an extended wake and very energetic turbulent events. With a single cube, no downstream development of large turbulent events exist and the wake reduces by a factor of 3 compared to the wake cylinder case. An inclined floor downstream of a single wall-mounted obstacle reduces its wake length but does not alter the turbulent structures shed. Turbulent velocity profiles extracted from every wake topology investigated are also compared. The general conclusion is that: for small aspect ratio cases, the obstacle will not affect the water column. On the contrary, strong energetic turbulent events are emitted from large aspect ratio obstacles. Combinations cases stand in-between.

A dual-step cylinder is comprised of two cylinders of different diameters. A large diameter cylinder (D) with low aspect ratio (L/D) is attached to the mid-span of a small diameter cylinder (d). The present study investigates the effect of Reynolds number (ReD) and L/D on dual step cylinder wake development for D/d=2, 0.2≤L/D≤3, and two Reynolds numbers, ReD=1050 and 2100. Experiments have been performed in a water flume facility utilizing flow visualization, Laser Doppler Velocimetry (LDV), and Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV). The results show that vortex shedding occurs from both the large and small diameter cylinders for 1≤L/D≤3 at ReD=2100 and 2≤L/D≤3 at ReD=1050. At these conditions, large cylinder vortices predominantly form vortex loops in the wake and small cylinder vortices form half-loop vortex connections. At lower aspect ratios, vortex shedding from the large cylinder ceases, with the dominant frequency in the large cylinder wake attributed to the passage of vortex filaments connecting small cylinder vortices. At these lower aspect ratios, the presence of the large cylinder induces periodic vortex dislocations. Increasing L/D increases the frequency of occurrence of vortex dislocations and decreases the dominant frequency in the large cylinder wake. The identified changes in wake topology are related to substantial variations in the location of boundary layer separation on the large cylinder, and, consequently, changes in the size of the vortex formation region. The results also show that the Reynolds number has a substantial effect on wake vortex shedding frequency, which is more profound than that expected for a uniform cylinder.

We discuss the experimental vortex wake of a flexible circular cylinder undergoing vortex-induced vibration at low Reynolds number and a large cylinder aspect ratio. Hydrogen bubbles formed on the cylinder track the von Karman vortex cores. They show a characteristic ‘void’ structure. We propose a vortex skeleton model that includes a pinch-off of opposite-signed cores. Voids occurred at a node in streamwise vibration when close to an antinode in transverse cylinder vibration. A vibration model predicts the ratio of shedding frequency to natural cylinder vibration frequency necessary for void formation at specific spanwise locations.

The multi-scale structures of turbulent wakes generated by three kinds of bluff body, i.e. circular cylinder, square cylinder and compound of cylinder and square (CS) cylinders, have been experimentally investigated in this paper. Firstly, the instantaneous velocity fields and vorticity were measured by the high-speed PIV technique in a circulating water channel. The instantaneous streamlines and corresponding normalized vorticity contours are obtained at a Reynolds number of 5600. Then one- and two-dimensional wavelet multi-resolution technique was used to analyze the instantaneous velocities and vorticity measured by the high-speed PIV. The turbulence structures were separated into a number of subsets based on their central frequencies, which are linked with the turbulence scales. The instantaneous vorticity and Reynolds shear stresses of various scales were examined and compared between the three generators. It is found that the large-scale turbulent structure makes the largest contribution to the vorticity and Reynolds shear stresses for the three wake generators and exhibits a strong dependence upon the initial conditions or the wake generators. The large-scale vorticity and the sizes of vortex in the circular and square cylinders are larger than those in the CS cylinder wake. The contributions to the Reynolds shear stresses from the large-scale turbulent structures account for 90-96% to the measured maximum Reynolds shear stresses for the three wakes. However, the small-scale structures make less contribution to the vorticity and Reynolds shear stresses.

The wake of a finite circular cylinder of small aspect ratio was studied with a seven-hole probe and thermal anemometry. The cylinder was mounted normal to a ground plane and was partially immersed in a turbulent boundary layer. The time-averaged velocity and streamwise vorticity fields showed the development of the tip vortex structures, the extent of the near-wake recirculation zone, the downwash phenomenon and base vortex structures within the boundary layer. The wake structure and power spectra were similar for cylinder aspect ratios of 5 to 9, but a distinctly different behaviour was observed for an aspect ratio of 3.

A wake behind a circular cylinder at Reynolds number 850–1700 was visualized by the smoke-wire method. The observations of the How together with the results of quantitative measurements, such as various velocity correlation coefficients, illustrated the formation process of spoon-shaped large eddies in the region 90 ⩽x/d⩽ 230 attained through the deformation and rearrangement of the regular Karman vortices. A spoon vortex was likely to pair with the counterpart on the opposite side of the wake. The large-scale bulges of the turbulent and non-turbulent interface of the wake were shown to correspond to these spoon vortices. These results indicate that some coherent structures are organized by rearrangement and deformation of initially regular vortices in turbulent flow.

Stratified flow past a three-dimensional obstacle such as a sphere has been a long-lasting subject of geophysical, environmental and engineering fluid dynamics. In order to investigate the effect of the stratification on the near wake, in particular, the unsteady vortex formation behind a sphere, numerical simulations of stratified flows past a sphere are conducted. The time-dependent Navier–Stokes equations are solved using a three-dimensional finite element method and a modified explicit time integration scheme. Laminar flow regime is considered, and linear stratification of density is assumed under Boussinesq approximation. The effects of stratification is implemented by density transport without diffusion. The computed results include the characteristics of the near wake as well as the effects of stratification on the separation angle. Under increased stratification, the separation on the sphere is suppressed and the wake structure behind the sphere becomes planar, resembling that behind a vertical cylinder. With further increase in stratification, the wake becomes unsteady, and consists of planar vortex shedding similar to von Karman vortex streets.

This note presents flow visualization results to show the response of wake flows behind a cylinder to the feedback suppression and excitation. The experiments were conducted in a water channel and the feedback perturbations were introduced into the wake by oscillating the cylinder transverse to the oncoming flow. The visualization photographs directly illustrated the wake flows under the feedback suppression and excitation at Reynolds numbers up to 25% above the natural onset Reynolds number for vortex shedding.

The flow characteristics around an elliptic cylinder with an axis ratio of AR=2 located near a flat plate were investigated experimentally. The elliptic cylinder was embedded in a turbulent boundary layer whose thickness is larger than the cylinder height. For comparison, the same experiment was carried out for a circular cylinder having the same vertical height. The Reynolds number based on the height of the cylinder cross-section was 14000. The pressure distributions on the cylinder surface and on the flat plate were measured for various gap distances between the cylinder and the plate. The wake velocity profiles behind the cylinder were measured using hot-wire anemometry. In the near-wake region, the vortices are shed regularly only when the gap ratio is greater than the critical value of G/B=0·4. The critical gap ratio is larger than that of a circular cylinder. The variation of surface pressure distributions on the elliptic cylinder with respect to the gap ratio is much smaller than that on the circular cylinder. This trend is more evident on the upper surface than the lower one. The surface pressures on the flat plate recover faster than those for the case of the circular cylinder at downstream locations. As the gap ratio increases, the drag coefficient of the cylinder itself increases, but the lift coefficient decreases. For all gap ratios tested in this study, the drag coefficient of the elliptic cylinder is about half that of the circular cylinder. The ground effect of the cylinder at small gap ratio constrains the flow passing through the gap, and restricts the vortex shedding from the cylinder, especially in the lower side of the cylinder wake. This constraint effect is more severe for the elliptic cylinder, compared to the circular cylinder. The wake region behind the elliptic cylinder is relatively small and the velocity profiles tend to approach rapidly to those of a flat plate boundary layer
