The present study provides a comparison between the flow pattern around two circular piers in tandem and a single pier set up on a moderately rough flat bed in a laboratory flume. Velocities are measured by an Acoustic Doppler Velocimeter (ADV). The contours of the time-averaged velocity components, Reynolds shear stresses, turbulence intensities and turbulence kinetic energy at different planes are presented. Streamlines and vectors are used to study the flow features. The analysis of power spectra around the piers is also presented. The results show that the presence of downstream pier changes the flow structure to a great extent, particularly in the near-wake region. Within the gap between the two piers, a stronger and substantial upflow is shaped. However, a weaker transverse-deflection is formed in comparison with that in the single pier. Near the bed, the velocity of flow approaching the downstream pier decreases to 0.2–0.3 times of the approach mean velocity (U 0) due to the sheltering effect of the upstream pier. In the wake of downstream pier, the flow structure is completely different from the one in the wake of single pier. In comparison with the single pier, the values of turbulence kinetic energy and turbulence intensities show a considerable decrease around the tandem piers. In tandem piers, the high values of turbulence characteristics are found near the downstream pier. There is a recirculation zones just upstream of the sheltered pier close to the bed and another behind that pier near the free surface. The results show a decrease in the strength of vortical structure in the wake of tandem piers in comparison with single pier. It is shown that the formation of flow with different Reynolds number along the flow depth due to the effect of bed roughness, as well as pier spacing, can influence the type of flow regime of tandem case. In addition to enhancing the flow structure indulgence, the present detailed measurements can also be used for verification of numerical models.  相似文献

Structure of wake of a sharp-edged bluff body in a shallow channel flow   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
The flow field downstream of a bluff body in a typical open channel flow was explored by two-dimensional particle image velocimetry. Measurements are obtained in horizontal planes at the near-bed, mid-depth and near-surface locations downstream of the body up to a streamwise distance of 10D, where D is the width of the body. The dimensionless streamwise defect velocity profile of the wake flow matches well with the data of a previous investigation and does not reflect any dependency on the distance from the bed. However, the nature of development of the recirculation region is found to be different at the three vertical locations. The time-averaged streamline pattern indicates the existence of a unique nodal pattern close to the bed. The variation of the half-width is also found to be affected by the presence of the bed and the free surface. The bed friction arrests the transverse growth of the shear layer, and the free-surface helps to redistribute the turbulent kinetic energy in the streamwise and transverse directions. Swirling strength analysis is carried out to compare the behavior and statistics of the vortex population in the vertical direction. The prevailing magnitude of the swirling strength is found to be different at the three vertical locations. Bed friction assists to dissipate vorticity rapidly, and therefore reduces the probability of appearance of strong vortices close to the bed.  相似文献

Particle-resolved direct numerical simulations of a 3-D liquid–solid fluidized bed experimentally investigated by Aguilar-Corona (2008) have been performed at different fluidization velocities (corresponding to a range of bed solid volume fraction between 0.1 and 0.4), using Implicit Tensorial Penalty Method. Particle Reynolds number and Stokes number are O(100) and O(10), respectively. In this paper, we compare the statistical quantities computed from numerical results with the experimental data obtained with 3-D trajectography and High Frequency PIV. Fluidization law predicted by the numerical simulations is in very good agreement with the experimental curve and the main features of trajectories and Lagrangian velocity signal of the particles are well reproduced by the simulations. The evolution of particle and flow velocity variances as a function of bed solid volume fraction is also well captured by the simulations. In particular, the numerical simulations predict the right level of anisotropy of the dispersed phase fluctuations and its independence of bed solid volume fraction. They also confirm the high value of the ratio between the fluid and the particle phase fluctuating kinetic energy. A quick analysis suggests that the fluid velocity fluctuations are mainly driven by fluid–particle wake interactions (pseudo-turbulence) whereas the particle velocity fluctuations derive essentially from the large scale flow motion (recirculation). Lagrangian autocorrelation function of particle fluctuating velocity exhibits large-scale oscillations, which are not observed in the corresponding experimental curves, a difference probably due to a statistical averaging effect. Evolution as a function of the bed solid volume fraction and the collision frequency based upon transverse component of particle kinetic energy correctly matches the experimental trend and is well fitted by a theoretical expression derived from Kinetic Theory of Granular Flows.  相似文献

The wake produced by a bluff body driven through a steady recirculating flow is studied experimentally in a water facility using particle image velocimetry. The bluff body has a rectangular cross section of height, \(H\), and width, \(D\), such that the aspect ratio, AR = H/D, is equal to 3. The motion of the bluff body is uniform and rectilinear, and corresponds to a Reynolds number based on width, Re D  = 9,600. The recirculating flow is confined within a hemicylindrical enclosure and is generated by planar jets emanating from slots of width, \(h\), such that \(Re_h=500\). Under these conditions, experiments are performed in a closed-loop facility that enables complete optical access to the near-wake. Velocity fields are obtained up to a distance of \(13D\) downstream of the moving body. Data include a selection of phase-averaged velocity fields representative of the wake for a baseline case (no recirculation) and an interaction case (with recirculation). Results indicate that the transient downwash flow typically observed in wakes behind finite bodies of small aspect ratio is significantly perturbed by the recirculating flow. The wake is displaced from the ground plane and exhibits a shorter recirculation zone downstream of the body. In summary, it was found that the interaction between a bluff body wake and a recirculating flow pattern alters profoundly the dynamics of the wake, which has implications on scalar transport in the wake.  相似文献

We investigate the onset and development of vortical flow disturbances introduced into the wake of a horizontally fixed flat-plate by means of the controlled motion of a trailing edge flap. The vibrating mechanics of the flap allows for the introduction of both impulsive and harmonic weak amplitude velocity disturbances which are propagated downstream into the wake flow of the flat-plate. Quantitative experimental and numerical predictions of both steady and unsteady wake flow velocity resulting from different flapping frequencies are made at low Reynolds numbers (Re < 104). Frequency response tests of the wake confirmed the existence of two dominant frequencies where the wake flow organises with a particular arrangement of downstream moving vortex structures. Numerical predictions of steady (unforced) and forced wake velocity profiles and kinetic energy profiles are in good agreement with the experimental results. In order to understand practical implications of the dominant vortex structures in scalar transport, we have extended the numerical part of the study solving for the concentration equation of a passive scalar being injected in particular regions of the physical domain. A spatial correlation between the trajectory of vortex structures and the scalar concentration downstream the wake is observed. Moreover, the onset of tip vortex structures produced during the forcing cycle seems to be responsible of a local increase of scalar concentration near the span wise flap ends.  相似文献

This study investigated the two-dimensional flow past two tandem circular or square cylinders at Re = 100 and D / d = 4–10, where D is the center-to-center distance and d is the cylinder diameter. Numerical simulation was performed to comparably study the effect of cylinder geometry and spacing on the aerodynamic characteristics, unsteady flow patterns, time-averaged flow characteristics and flow unsteadiness. We also provided the first global linear stability analysis and sensitivity analysis on the physical problem for the potential application of flow control. The objective of this work is to quantitatively identify the effect of the cylinder geometry and spacing on the characteristic quantities. Numerical results reveal that there is wake flow transition for both geometries depending on the spacing. The characteristic quantities, including the time-averaged and fluctuating streamwise velocity and pressure coefficient, are quite similar to that of the single cylinder case for the upstream cylinder, while an entirely different variation pattern is observed for the downstream cylinder. The global linear stability analysis shows that the spatial structure of perturbation is mainly observed in the wake of the downstream cylinder for small spacing, while moves upstream with reduced size and is also observed after the upstream cylinder for large spacing. The sensitivity analysis reflects that the temporal growth rate of perturbation is the most sensitive to the near-wake flow of downstream cylinder for small spacing and upstream cylinder for large spacing.  相似文献

A numerical study of the alteration of a square cylinder wake using a detached downstream thin flat plate is presented. The wake is generated by a uniform flow of Reynolds number 150 based on the side length of the cylinder, D. The sensitivity of the near wake structure to the downstream position of the plate is investigated by varying the gap distance (G) along the wake centerline in the range 0  G  7D for a constant plate length of L = D. A critical gap distance is observed to occur at Gc  2.3D that indicates the existence of two flow regimes. Regime I is characterised by vortex formation occurring downstream of the gap while for regime II, formation occurs within the gap. By varying the plate length and gap distance, a condition is found where significant unsteady total lift reduction can occur. The root mean square lift reduction is limited by an unsteady stall process on the plate.  相似文献

The effects of shape and relative submergence (the ratio of flow depth to obstacle height, d/H) are investigated on the wakes around four different low-aspect-ratio wall-mounted obstacles at Re H  = 17,800: semi-ellipsoids with the major axes of the base ellipses aligned in the streamwise and transverse directions, and two cylinders with aspect ratios matching the ellipsoids (H/D = 0.89 and 0.67, where D is the maximum transverse dimension). Particle Image Velocimetry was used to interrogate the flow. Streamwise features observed in the mean wake include counter-rotating distributions of vorticity inducing downwash (tip structures), upwash (base structures), and horseshoe vortices. In particular, the relatively subtle change in geometry produced by the rotation of the ellipsoid from the streamwise to the transverse orientation results in a striking modification of the mean streamwise vorticity distribution in the wake. Tip structures are dominant in the former case, while base structures are dominant in the latter. A vortex skeleton model of the wake is proposed in which arch vortex structures, shed from the obstacle, are deformed by the competing mechanisms of Biot-Savart self-induction and the external shear flow. The selection of tip or base structures in the ellipsoid wakes is caused by tilting of the arch structures either upstream or downstream, respectively, which is governed by ellipsoid curvature. An inverse relationship was observed between the relative submergence and the strength of the base structures for the ellipsoids, with a dominant base structure observed for d/H = 1 in both cases. These results demonstrate a means by which to achieve significant modifications to flow structure and thereby also to transport mechanisms in the flow. Therefore, this work provides insight into the modeling and control of flow over wall-mounted bodies.  相似文献

The three-dimensional wake flow behind a flat plate placed normal to the free stream has been investigated by means of direct numerical simulations. The Reynolds number Re based on the homogeneous inflow velocity and the uniform width d of the plate was 750. Coherent vortices were alternately shed from the sides of the plate with a frequency corresponding to a Strouhal number 0.168. The wake was distinctly turbulent downstream of the plate whereas the mean recirculation bubble extended 1.96d downstream. A steady 2D mean flow and the accompanying Reynolds stresses were obtained by averaging in time and along the span of the plate. These Reynolds-averaged statistics exhibited the same qualitative features as corresponding data from cylinder wakes.  相似文献

The results of an experimental investigation on the flow field around submerged structures on horizontal plane beds, measured by an acoustic Doppler velocimeter (ADV), are presented. Experiments were conducted for various conditions of submergence, having submergence factors ranging from 1.0 to 2.0 and average flow velocity ranging from 0.25 to 0.51 m/s. The Froude number and the Reynolds number of the approaching flow for different runs are in the range of 0.18–0.42 and 50 000–76 500, respectively. The vertical distributions of time-averaged three dimensional velocity components and turbulence intensity components at different radial distances from the submerged structures are plotted. Deceleration and acceleration of the approaching flow around the submerged body are evident from the vertical distributions of the horizontal velocity component, whereas the lifting and diving nature of the flow are indicated by the vertical velocity component distributions. The vertical distributions of the horizontal velocity component indicate reduction of 30% of the non-dimensional time-averaged horizontal velocity component magnitude for the cylinder of diameter 11.5 cm in comparison to the cylinder of diameter 10 cm. Also, there is an increase of 10–25% in the horizontal velocity component at different radial sections. The flow is three dimensional in the downstream of the submerged structure. The velocity and the turbulent intensity components are also well predicted by FLUENT. The flow characteristics in the wake and the induced bed shear stress are also analyzed with FLUENT.The profiles of non-dimensional shear velocity deviate from the log law in the wake and the far downstream directions. The scour prone regions may be identified from the profiles of the induced bed shear stress around the submerged structure.  相似文献

This paper describes an experimental investigation of the interaction between the boundary layer on a horizontal floor of a shallow open channel flow and the wake of a thin flat plate mounted vertically on the floor of the channel. The nominal thickness of the flat plate was limited to 2 mm in order to minimize the effect of the flume side walls on the generated wake. Two flat plate chord to thickness ratios (10 and 25) and two depths of flow (50 and 80 mm) were considered. The boundary layer thickness of the approaching flow was comparable with the depth of flow. The recovery of the boundary layer is then studied by observing the characteristics of the velocity profile downstream of the flat plate along the wake axis. The results indicate that the recovery process is slow, and that it is clearly non-monotonic. When compared with the approaching flow, the streamwise turbulence intensity values increase in the near-wake region followed by a gradual but slow decrease with increasing axial distance. Neither mean nor higher-order moments indicate a complete recovery even at large distances from the wake generator. The present results also indicate that the inner region appears to develop more quickly than the outer flow. Since the development of the quasi-two-dimensional wake is also of interest, velocity measurements are also presented along the wake cross-section. These velocity profiles indicate that the wake effects are still prevalent at 200 plate widths downstream of the wake generator. Through a proper choice of scaling variables, the mean velocity profiles across the wake can be collapsed onto a single curve, indicating a sense of similarity. A two-frame PIV (particle image velocimetry) technique was used to investigate the flow characteristics of a complicated propeller wake influenced by a hull wake. As the propeller is significantly affected by the hull wake of a marine vessel, measurements of the propeller wake under the hull wake are certainly needed for more reliable validation of numerical predictions. Velocity field measurements were conducted in a cavitation tunnel with a simulated hull wake. Generally, the hull wake generated by the hull of a marine ship may cause different loading distributions on the propeller blade in both the upper and the lower propeller planes. The unstable propeller wake caused by the ship’s hull was interpreted in terms of turbulent kinetic energy (T KE) to obtain useful information for flow modeling. The unstable or unsteady phenomenon in the upper propeller wake was identified by using the proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) method to characterize the coherent flow structure with turbulent kinetic energy. Strong unsteadiness appeared in the second and higher modes, largely affecting the downstream flow characteristics. The first eigenmode can be used to appropriately identify the tip vortex positions even in the unstable downstream region, which are helpful for establishing reliable wake modeling.  相似文献

Extensive measurements were conducted in an incompressible turbulent flow around the wing-body junction formed by a 3∶2 semi-elliptic nose/NACA 0020 tail section and a flat plate. Mean and fluctuating velocity measurements were performed adjacent to the wing and up to 11.56 chord lengths downstream. The appendage far wake region was subjected to an adverse pressure gradient. The authors' results show that the characteristic horseshoe vortex flow structure is elliptically shaped, with ? (W)/?Y forming the primary component of the streamwise vorticity. The streamwise development of the flow distortions and vorticity distributions is highly dependent on the geometry-induced pressure gradients and resulting flow skewing directions. The primary goal of this research was to determine the effects of the approach boundary layer characteristics on the junction flow. To accomplish this goal, the authors' results were compared to several other junction flow data sets obtained using the same body shape. The trailing vortex leg flow structure was found to scale on T. A parameter known as the momentum deficit factor (MDF = (Re T)2 (θ/T)) was found to correlate the observed trends in mean flow distortion magnitudes and vorticity distribution. Changes in δ/T were seen to affect the distribution of u′, with lower ratios producing well defined local turbulence maxima. Increased thinning of the boundary layer near the appendage was also observed for small values of δ/T.  相似文献

Flow characteristics around the square cylinder and their influence on the wake properties are studied. Time-averaged flow patterns on the surfaces of square cylinder in a cross-stream at incidence are experimentally probed by surface-oil flow technique and analyzed by flow topology for Reynolds numbers between 3.9×104 and 9.4×104 as the incidence angle changes from 0° to 45°. Vortex shedding characteristics are measured by a single-wire hot-wire anemometer for Reynolds numbers between 5×103 and 1.2×105. The effects of topological flow patterns on the wake properties then are revealed and discussed. Flows around the square cylinder are identified as three categories: the subcritical, supercritical, and wedge flows according to the prominently different features of the topological flow patterns. The Strouhal number of vortex shedding, turbulence in the wake, and wake width present drastically different behaviors in different characteristic flow regimes. A critical incidence angle of 15° separates the subcritical and supercritical regimes. At the critical incidence angle the wake width and shear-layer turbulence present minimum values. The minimum wake width appearing at the critical incidence angle, which leads to the maximum Strouhal number, is due to the reattachment of one of the separated boundary layer to the lateral face of the square cylinder. If the Strouhal numbers are calculated based on the wake width instead of the cross-stream projection width of cylinder, the data in the subcritical and supercritical regimes are well correlated into two groups, which would approach constants at high Reynolds numbers.  相似文献

The wakes of elliptical cylinders are numerically investigated at a Reynolds number ReD = 150. ANSYS-Fluent, based on the finite volume method, is used to simulate two-dimensional Newtonian fluid flow. The cylinder cross-sectional aspect ratio (AR) is varied from 0.25 to 1.0 (circular cylinder), and the angle of attack (α) of the cylinder is changed as α = 0° – 90°. With the changes in AR and α, three distinct wake patterns (patterns I, II, III) are observed, associated with different characteristics of fluid forces. Steady wake (pattern I) is characterised by two steady bubbles forming behind the cylinder, occurring at AR < 0.37 and α < 2.5°. Time-mean drag and fluctuating lift coefficients are small. Pattern II refers to Karman wake followed by steady wake (AR ≥ 0.37 – 0.67, depending on α) with the Karman street transitioning to two steady shear layers downstream. An inflection angle αi is identified where the time-mean drag of the elliptical cylinder is identical to that of a circular cylinder. Pattern III is the Karman wake followed by secondary wake (AR ≤ 0.67, α > 52°), where the Karman street forming behind the cylinder is modified to a secondary vortex street with a low frequency. The Time-mean drag coefficient is maximum for this pattern.  相似文献

The baseline and forced flow around a bluff body with semi-elliptical D-shape was investigated by solving the 2D Navier–Stokes equations at low Reynolds numbers. A D-shape rather than the canonic circular-cylinder was selected due to the fixed separation points in the latter, enabling to study a pure wake rather than boundary-layer control. The correlation between Strouhal and Reynolds numbers, the mean drag, the lift and drag oscillations vs. the Reynolds number and wake structure were investigated and compared to experimental and numerical data. Effects of open-loop forcing, resulting from the influence of zero-mass-flux actuators located at the fixed separation points, were studied at a Reynolds number of 150. Fluidic rather than body motion or volume forcing was selected due to applicability considerations. The motivation for the study was to quantify the changes in the flow field features, as captured by Proper Orthogonal Decomposition (POD) analysis, due to open-loop forcing, inside and outside the “lock-in” regime. This is done in order to evaluate the suitability of low-order-models based on POD modes of this changing flow field, for future feed-back flow control studies. The evolution of the natural and the excited vortices in the Kármán wake were also investigated. The formation and convection regions of the vortex evolution were documented. It was found that the forcing causes an earlier detachment of the vortices from the boundary-layers, but does not affect their circulation or convection speeds. The results of the POD analysis of the near-wake flow show that the influence of the bluff body shape (“D”-shaped versus circular cylinder) on the baseline POD wake modes is small. It was found that the eigenfunctions (mode-shapes) of the POD velocity modes are less sensitive to slot excitation than the vorticity modes. As a result of the open-loop excitation, two types of mode-shape-change were observed: a mode can be exchanged with a lower-energy mode or shifted to a low energy level. In the latter case, the most energetic mode becomes the “actuator” mode. The evolution of one-slot excitation on still fluid (“Synthetic jet”) was studied and compared to published data and to “actuator” modes with external flow present. Based on the current findings, it is hypothesized that the cross-flow velocity POD modes are suitable for feedback control of wake flow using periodic excitation, due to their low sensitivity to the excitation as compared to the streamwise velocity or vorticity modes.  相似文献

This work aims to investigate how the presence of a downstream cylinder affects the passive scalar transport in a cylinder wake. The wake was generated by two tandem brass circular cylinders of the same diameter (d). The cylinder centre-to-centre spacing L/d was 1.3, 2.5 and 4.0, respectively, covering the three typical flow regimes of this flow. The upstream cylinder was slightly heated. Measurements were conducted at x/d= 10 and Re (≡ dU /ν, where U is the free-stream velocity and ν is the kinematic viscosity of fluid) = 7000. A three-wire probe consisting of an X-wire and a cold wire was used to measure the velocity and temperature fluctuations, while an X-wire provided a phase reference. The phase-averaged velocity vectors and vorticity display single vortex street behind the downstream cylinder, irrespective of the flow regimes. However, the detailed flow structure exhibits strong dependence on L/d in terms of the Strouhal number, the vortex strength and its downstream evolution. This naturally affects passive scalar transport. The coherent and incoherent heat flux vectors show significant variation for different L/d.  相似文献

This paper represents the results of an experimental study on the flow structure around a single sphere and three spheres in an equilateral-triangular arrangement. Flow field measurements were performed using a Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) technique and dye visualization in an open water channel for a Reynolds number of Re = 5 × 103 based on the sphere diameter. The distributions and flow features at the critical locations of the contours of the velocity fluctuations, the patterns of sectional streamlines, the vorticity contours, the turbulent kinetic energy, the Reynolds stress correlations and shedding frequency are discussed. The gap ratios (G/D) of the three spheres were varied in the range of 1.0  G/D  2.5 where G was the distance between the sphere centers, and D was the sphere diameter which was taken as 30 mm. Due to the interference of the shedding shear layers and the wakes, more complex features of the flow patterns can be found in the wake region of the two downstream spheres behind the leading sphere. For G/D = 1.25, a jet-like flow around the leading sphere through the gap between the two downstream spheres occurred, which significantly enhanced the wake region. It was observed that a continuous flow development involving shearing phenomena and the interactions of shedding vortices caused a high rate of fluctuations over the whole flow field although most of the time-averaged flow patterns were almost symmetric about the two downstream spheres.  相似文献

The variation of the base pressure coefficient (Cp), velocity power spectra, and velocity time–frequency plots for an array of two cylinders aligned normal to the flow are presented. Power spectra of the fluctuating velocity downstream of the two-cylinder array with s/d=0.750 (where s is the spacing between the top and bottom surfaces of adjacent cylinders and d is the diameter of the cylinder) show two peaks. The corresponding Wigner–Ville frequency–time plot of the same fluctuating velocity time series shows that the peak frequency observed during a narrow wake remains constant and relatively high while the peak frequency observed during a wide wake remains constant and relatively low. The two frequency values are consistent with the peaks observed in the power spectra. Thus, during flopping, the high frequency observed in the velocity power spectra is always the peak frequency for a narrow wake and the low frequency observed in the velocity power spectra is always the peak frequency for a wide wake.  相似文献

Shallow wakes that occur in a wide range of natural flows tend to generate instabilities that develop into large, 2D coherent structures (2DCS). We present the results of an experimental study to stabilize shallow wakes by local, enhanced bottom roughness. Two successful stabilization strategies are compared to a base case of an unsteady bubble wake. First, localized bed roughness is placed in the lateral shear layers near the shoulders of the cylinder. Second, a local roughness element is placed at the end of the recirculation bubble, in the downstream region where large-scale vortices would normally shed. Dye visualization is used to assess the qualitative behavior of the wake, and two-component laser Doppler velocimetry (LDV) measurements are made to measure the Reynolds stress distributions and time-averaged velocity profiles. In both stabilization cases, a minimum patch size of the enhanced roughness elements is required for stabilization, which depends on the momentum thickness of the shear layers and the locations of enhanced Reynolds shear stresses. The main effect of the wake stabilization is a reduction in momentum exchange with the ambient flow due to damping of the large 2DCS. This reduction in eddy diffusivity results in a narrower wake and a slower decay of the centerline velocity deficit with downstream distance compared to the base case of an unsteady bubble wake.  相似文献
