We study the structure and the electronic properties of the (1 1 0) surfaces of magnetite Fe3O4 thin films by scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and spectroscopy (STS). The STM images show a surface reconstruction consisting of ridges along the direction. Based on atomically resolved STM images we present a model for the observed ridge reconstruction of the surface, in agreement with a bulk-truncated layer containing both octahedral and tetrahedral iron ions. The metallic and semiconductor-like shapes of the measured current-voltage (I-V) curves indicate a non-uniform segregation of magnesium through the film. The weak contrast between the tops and valleys of ridges measured in the STS current maps is attributed to tetrahedral and octahedral coordination at the tops and the valleys, respectively. This attribution is in agreement with the proposed structure model. We observe a contrast enhancement at a tip change accompanied by a corrugation enhancement. This tip change is induced by picking up material from the sample, resulting in a magnetic tip. Thus, the contrast enhancement is attributed to detection of spin polarized current.  相似文献

The electronic structure of Si(1 1 1)-(6 × 6)Au surface covered with submonolayer amount of Pb is investigated using scanning tunneling spectroscopy. Already in small islands of Pb with thickness of 1 ML Pb(1 1 1) and with the diameter of only about 2 nm we detected the quantized electronic state with energy 0.55 eV below the Fermi level. Similarly, the I(V) characteristics made for the Si(1 1 1)-(6 × 6)Au surface reveal a localized energy state 0.3 eV below the Fermi level. These energies result from fitting of the theoretical curves to the experimental data. The calculations are based on tight binding Hubbard model. The theoretical calculations clearly show prominent modification of the I(V) curve due to variation of electronic and topographic properties of the STM tip apex.  相似文献

Low-energy electron diffraction and scanning tunneling microscopy have been used to probe the surface atomic structure of Cu2O(1 1 1) after various sample preparations. Annealing in oxygen gives a stoichiometric (1 × 1) oxygen terminated surface and further annealing in ultra-high vacuum results in a clear reconstruction and surface faceting. Tunneling from filled states in the reconstructed surface reveals a hexagonal pattern of large protrusions, which show an internal structure. The reconstruction is believed to be due to one-third of a monolayer of ordered oxygen vacancies. At areas on the surface where the large features are missing, another smaller type of protrusions is visible, which is associated with the ideal (1 × 1) surface. The relative position of the two types of features gives two possible models of the (1 1 1) surface. In the first model, the (1 × 1) surface is the ideal bulk terminated surface and coordinatively unsaturated oxygen ions are missing in the reconstructed surface. The second model agrees with the first model with the exception that coordinatively unsaturated copper ions in the outmost copper layer are missing in both the (1 × 1) and the reconstructed surface. The latter model is supported by previous surface free energy calculations. Since the undercoordinated copper ions have been suggested to be the catalytic active sites of Cu2O(1 1 1), the presence or absence of these cations could be of great importance for the fundamental understanding of the surface reactivity of Cu2O and of copper-based catalysts.  相似文献

We have measured the scanning tunneling microscope (STM) light emission spectra of Ni(1 1 0)-streaky (1 × 2) surfaces. When the tip was fixed over atomic hydrogen adsorbed on the surfaces, two types of vibration-induced structure were observed in the STM light emission spectra. One is the periodic fine structures that were already reported in our previous paper [Y. Uehara, S. Ushioda, Phys. Rev. Lett. 92 (2004) 066102] and the other newly found in the present experiments is a stepwise structure that is located at the vibrational energy of hydrogen below the cutoff energy of the STM light emission. They are ascribed to different excitation mechanisms of the vibration in the STM light emission process; the periodic fine structures appear when the vibrating motion is directly excited by the electrons injected from the tip. Conversely, the stepwise structure is observed when it is excited by the electromagnetic fields confined in the tip-sample gap, i.e., by localized surface plasmons.  相似文献

Electronic and structural properties of Bi-terminated reconstructions on GaAs(0 0 1) surface have been studied by scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and synchrotron radiation core-level spectroscopy. A 2-3 monolayer thick Bi-layer was evaporated on a Ga-terminated GaAs(0 0 1) surface. By heating the surface, the reconstruction changed from (2 × 1) to (2 × 4). The α2 phase with one top Bi dimer and one As or Bi dimer in the third atomic layer per surface unit cell is proposed to explain the STM images of the Bi/GaAs(0 0 1)(2 × 4) surface heated at 400 °C. Bi 5d photoemission from the Bi/GaAs(2 × 4) consisted of two components suggesting two different bonding sites for Bi atoms on the (2 × 4) surface. The variation of the surface sensitivity of the photoemission induced no changes in the intensities of the components indicating that the origins of both components lie in the first surface layer.  相似文献

Local work functions at individual atoms on a compound metal surface have been experimentally examined. The simultaneously obtained STM and local tunneling barrier height (LBH) images of NiAl(1 1 0) show that LBH at geometrically lower Ni sites is much higher than that at geometrically higher Al sites, indicating that each individual atom on the NiAl(1 1 0) surface has a specific potential barrier for relevant electrons.  相似文献

The potential-induced (1 × 1) → “hex” transition on Au(1 0 0) electrodes in 0.01 M Na2SO4 + 1 mM HCl was studied by in situ scanning tunneling microscopy at high time resolution (Video-STM). According to these observations the elementary units of the “hex” surface reconstruction, hexagonally-ordered strings in the Au surface layer, are highly dynamic nanoscale objects. Isolated “hex” strings exhibit dynamic fluctuations in structure and position on the millisecond timescale. These fluctuations exceed the mobility of multistring “hex” domains by several orders of magnitude and can be explained by collective dynamic processes within the strings. Furthermore, the observations reveal a novel 1D mass transport mechanism along the strings, details on the nucleation and growth of “hex” strings and complex string restructuring processes, facilitating “hex” domain ripening.  相似文献

Injection of tunneling electrons and holes from the probe tips of a scanning tunneling microscope was found to enhance the hopping motion of Cl atoms between neighboring dangling-bond sites of Si dimers on Si(1 0 0)-(2 × 1) surfaces, featured by the rate of hopping linearly dependent on the injection current. The hopping rate formed peaks at sample biases of VS∼+1.25 and −0.85 V, which agree with the peaks in the local density of states spectrum measured by scanning tunneling spectroscopy. The Cl hopping was enhanced at Cl-adsorbed sites even remote from the injection point. The Cl hopping by hole injection was more efficiently enhanced by sweeping the tip along the Si dimer row than by tip-sweeping along the perpendicular direction. Such anisotropy, on the other hand, was insignificant in the electron injection case. All of these findings can be interpreted by the model that the holes injected primarily into a surface band originated from the dangling bonds of Si dimers propagate quite anisotropically along the surface, and become localized at Cl sites somehow to destabilize the Si-Cl bonds causing hopping of the Cl atoms. The electrons injected into a bulk band propagate in an isotropic manner and then get resonantly trapped at Si-Cl antibonding orbitals, resulting in bond destabilization and hopping of the Cl atoms.  相似文献

By scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy (STM/S) and high-resolution core-level photoemission using synchrotron radiation, we have investigated the atomic structure and electronic properties of Sb-induced 2 × 1 reconstruction on Ge(1 1 1). Our results support well the zigzag-chain model proposed for this phase in the literature; in particular, the STM images visualize the Sb zigzag (Seiwatz) chain in a real space, and the STS I-V spectrum suggests this surface to be semiconducting, in good agreement with the atomic configuration proposed. However, a closer inspection of the STM results does not support the buckling of Sb chains reported in earlier studies. Moreover, the analysis of the Sb 4d core-level line shape of the (2 × 1) reconstruction shows that the bonding state of the Sb atoms is very similar, suggesting an unbuckled Seiwatz chain. In addition, the Ge 3d core-level emission reveals only one component, giving evidence for the ideal bulk-terminated structure of the Ge substrate.  相似文献

The oxidation of the W(1 0 0) surface at elevated temperatures has been studied using room temperature STM and LEED. High exposure of the clean surface to O2 at 1500 K followed by flash-annealing to 2300 K in UHV results in the formation of a novel p(3 × 1) reconstruction, which is imaged by STM as a missing-row structure on the surface. Upon further annealing in UHV, this surface develops a floreted LEED pattern characteristic of twinned microdomains of monoclinic WOx, while maintaining the p(3 × 1) missing-row structure. Atomically resolved STM images of this surface show a complex domain structure with single and double W〈0 1 0〉 rows coexisting on the surface in different domains.  相似文献

We investigated desorption of chlorine atoms on Si (1 1 1)-(7 × 7) surfaces induced by hole injection from scanning tunneling microscope tips. The hole-induced desorption of chlorine atoms had a threshold bias voltage corresponding to the energy position of the S3 surface band originated in Si backbonds. The chlorine atom desorption rate was almost proportional to the square of the tunneling current. We have discussed possible mechanisms that two holes injected into Si surface states get localized at the backbonds of chlorinated Si adatoms, which induces the rupture of Cl-Si bonds to result in chlorine atom desorption.  相似文献

The structure and electronic properties of ultrathin Co films on W(1 1 0) grown by molecular beam epitaxy in UHV were investigated by low energy electron diffraction (LEED) and scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy (STM and STS). For coverages above 0.7 ML the pseudomorphic (ps) monolayer is transformed gradually into close-packed (cp-) monolayer areas, showing up as separated islands that increase in size with coverage until the cp-monolayer is complete. Two different structures of the cp-monolayer were observed by atomically resolved STM, both leading to a 8 × 1 superstructure in the LEED pattern. Higher coverages continue to grow in the Stransky–Krastanov growth mode forming simultaneously double layer islands and triple layer islands in fcc(1 1 1) and hcp(0 0 0 1) stacking. STS reveals tunneling spectra that differ considerably depending on the thickness and on the structure. Two different classes of triple layer islands can be distinguished by a resonant peak at +0.3 eV appearing in only one of the two classes. We attributed this behavior to a different stacking according to a fcc or hcp structure.  相似文献

Using a field ion microscope, the diffusion behaviors and atomic processes of W atoms and clusters on W (1 1 1) surfaces were observed directly. The activation energy of W clusters diffusion on W (1 1 1) as a function of cluster size has an oscillatory and increasing behavior. But, the activation energy of a single W atom is especially high. The compact geometric structures are more stable and have higher activation energies of surface diffusion than structures with extra atoms at the periphery. Besides the terrace diffusion, other atomic processes such as the ascending, descending, detachment motion on W (1 1 1) surfaces were also observed. Unlike the general systems, their occurrence temperatures are quite near. These experimental results were used to discuss the formation mechanism of single atom W tips.  相似文献

Several surface analysis techniques were combined to study the initial stages of oxidation of Cu(1 1 1) surfaces exposed to O2 at low pressure (<5 × 10−6 mbar) and room temperature. Scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) results show that the reactivity is governed by the restructuring of the Cu(1 1 1) surface. On the terraces, oxygen dissociative adsorption leads to the formation of isolated O adatoms and clusters weakly bound to the surface. The O adatoms are located in the fcc threefold hollow sites of the unrestructured terraces. Friedel oscillations with an amplitude lower than 5 pm have been measured around the adatoms. At step edges, surface restructuring is initiated and leads to the nucleation and growth of a two-dimensional disordered layer of oxide precursor. The electronic structure of this oxide layer is characterised by a band gap measured by scanning tunneling spectroscopy to be ∼1.5 eV wide. The growth of the oxide islands progresses by consumption of the upper metal terraces to form triangular indents. The extraction of the Cu atoms at this interface generates a preferential orientation of the interface along the close-packed directions of the metal. A second growth front corresponds to the step edges of the oxide islands and progresses above the lower metal terraces. This is where the excess Cu atoms extracted at the first growth front are incorporated. STM shows that the growing disordered oxide layer consists of units of hexagonal structure with a first nearest neighbour distance characteristic of a relaxed Cu-Cu distance (∼0.3 nm), consistent with local Cu2O(1 1 1)-like elements. Exposure at 300 °C is necessary to form an ordered two-dimensional layer of oxide precursor. It forms the so-called “29” superstructure assigned to a periodic distorted Cu2O(1 1 1)-like structure.  相似文献

We have studied by scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) the effect of the reconstruction of a stepped Au(1 1 1) surface on the growth of silver sub-monolayer deposition. For narrow terraces, the reconstruction is disturbed and its pattern changes, Ag growth is therefore influenced. Thus growth of Ag on Au(7 8 8) vicinal surface can be controlled and leads to the formation of a highly ordered superlattice of nanostructures. Moreover, we show by tunneling conductance images that Ag islands exhibit electronic confinement effects of the Shockley surface state. Due to the homogeneity of their shapes and sizes, all the nanostructures of the self-assembled superlattice should exhibit similar electronic properties.  相似文献

InSb(0 0 1) surface prepared by ion sputtering and thermal annealing has been studied in the temperature range from 77 K up to 300 K using scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). At 300 K the surface is c(8 × 2) reconstructed as indicated by low energy electron diffraction and STM images, and its structure appears to be consistent with the “ζ-model” recently proposed for this surface. Upon lowering of the temperature below 180 K a new phase appears on the surface. This phase is characterized by the surface structure period doubling along [1 1 0], lowering the surface symmetry from c2mm to p2, and appearance of structural domains. Possible origins of the new phase are discussed.  相似文献

Initial hydrogen adsorption on the Si(1 1 1) 7 × 7 surface was studied by scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) in an ultrahigh vacuum. Room temperature adsorbed hydrogen on the adatom in the 7 × 7 reconstruction led to depression of adatoms in the STM images. The hydrogen uptake curve at the adatom site as a function of hydrogen exposure time was well represented by Langmuir adsorption. No preferential adsorption was seen among four inequivalent adatoms in the 7 × 7 reconstruction. Adsorption of the adjacent center and corner adatoms respectively showed ∼10% higher adsorption. Even though the number of reacted adatoms in the half unit of the 7 × 7 reconstruction was statistically random, the number of reacted adatoms in the nearest neighbor half unit was enhanced as the number of reacted sites increased in the half unit.  相似文献

We report ab initio calculations of the anisotropic dielectric function of tungsten (1 1 0) surface using the linear muffin-tin-orbital method. The calculated anisotropy in the optical spectrum, for polarization of light parallel to the surface, exhibits three dominant broad structures at 3.00, 4.01 and 5.34 eV successively positive, negative and then positive. The first peak is clearly assigned to p → d interband transitions in surface atomic sites whereas the two others have their origin in interband transitions in bulk like atoms. Our results, including the interlayer relaxation effect on the surface optical response, are compared to recent reflectance anisotropy measurements.  相似文献

The electronic structure of GaAs(1 1 0) surface is analyzed using Density Functional Theory (DFT-GGA) in atomic orbital basis (LCAO). The surface orbitals and the corresponding local density of electronic states (LDOS) are calculated for purposes of interpreting STM images. We show how local atomic orbitals of surface atoms are related to tunneling channels for electrons in STM imaging. A destructive interference between orbitals of two neighbouring atoms increases the contrast between the two atoms, and this is reflected in directionality of STM patterns of GaAs(1 1 0) surfaces. We also discuss how the basic formalism of Tersoff-Hamann approach to STM simulation can be reformulated to reveal the role of phase difference between tunneling channels.  相似文献

The morphology of ultrathin Ni films on Mo(1 1 0) and W(1 0 0) has been studied by low-energy electron diffraction and scanning tunneling microscopy. Ni films grow pseudomorphically on Mo(1 1 0) at 300 K for a coverage of 0.15 ML. A (8 × 1) structure is found at 0.4 ML, which develops into a (7 × 1) structure by 0.8 ML. The film undergoes a structural change to fcc Ni(1 1 1) at 6 ML. The growth mode switches from layer-by-layer to Stranski-Krastanov between 4 ML and 6 ML. Annealing at around 850 K results in alloying of submonolayer films with the substrate, while for higher coverages the Ni agglomerates into nanowedge islands. Ni films grow pseudomorphically on W(1 0 0) up to a coverage of around 2 ML at 300 K, above which there is a structural change from bcc to hcp Ni with the epitaxial relationship . This is accompanied by the formation of orthogonal domains of uniaxial strain-relieving dislocations from the third layer of the film. For coverages up to 1 ML the growth proceeds by formation of two-dimensional islands, but shifts to three-dimensional growth by 2 ML with rectangular islands aligned along the 〈0 1 1〉 substrate directions. Annealing at around 550 K results in agglomeration of Ni into larger islands and increasing film roughness.  相似文献
