We have used a novel fibre-optic low-energy electron diffraction (FO-LEED) instrument, capable of low flux measurements that minimise electron beam damage to surface overlayers, to study methanethiolate (CH3-S-) structural phases formed on Cu{1 1 1} at temperatures between 110 and 300 K. Three structural phases were seen: a (√3 × √3)R30° phase that forms at 110-140 K; a (4 × 4) phase which was observed transiently at 110 K; and a pseudo-{1 0 0} reconstructed phase which forms at room temperature. We discuss these in the context of previous studies of this system, and demonstrate the ability of the FO-LEED instrument to record high-quality LEED patterns and intensity data from a strongly beam-sensitive surface.  相似文献

Monolayer Ga adsorption on Si surfaces has been studied with the aim of forming p-delta doped nanostructures. Ga surface phases on Si can be nitrided by N2+ ion bombardment to form GaN nanostructures with exotic electron confinement properties for novel optoelectronic devices. In this study, we report the adsorption of Ga in the submonolayer regime on 7 × 7 reconstructed Si(1 1 1) surface at room temperature, under controlled ultrahigh vacuum conditions. We use in-situ Auger electron spectroscopy, electron energy loss spectroscopy and low energy electron diffraction to monitor the growth and determine the properties. We observe that Ga grows in the Stranski-Krastanov growth mode, where islands begin to form on two flat monolayers. The variation in the dangling bond density is observed during the interface evolution by monitoring the Si (LVV) line shape. The Ga adsorbed system is subjected to thermal annealing and the residual thermal desorption studied. The difference in the adsorption kinetics and desorption dynamics on the surface morphology is explained in terms of strain relaxation routes and bonding configurations. Due to the presence of an energetic hierarchy of residence sites of adatoms, site we also plot a 2D phase diagram consisting of several surface phases. Our EELS results show that the electronic properties of the surface phases are unique to their respective structural arrangement.  相似文献

We have studied by Spot Profile Analysis Low Energy Electron Diffraction (SPA-LEED) the growth of gold particles on the N/Cu(0 0 1) self-organized surface. This template consists of nitrogen islands separated by bare Cu lines and forming a regular 2D array of period 5 nm. When Au is evaporated onto this surface, it mainly grows at the intersections between the Cu lines. The islands organization reproduces then the substrate 2D ordering. However, if the substrate temperature is too low, islands form everywhere. On the contrary, if the substrate temperature is too high, some nucleation sites are empty. By following the intensity of the diffraction satellites during the growth, we have observed that the ordering of the Au particles is optimum when the substrate temperature is between 210 and 290 K. Using both an analytical treatment based on the rate equations and kinetic Monte-Carlo simulations, we have determined the activation energy for the diffusion process and the energy of the traps.  相似文献

The T-θ phase diagram for the system Pb/Si(1 1 1) was determined in the coverage range 6/5 ML < θ < 4/3 ML from complementary STM and SPA-LEED experiments. This coverage is within the range where a “Devil’s Staircase” (DS) has been realized. The numerous DS phases answer conflicting information in the Pb/Si(1 1 1) literature and update the previously published phase diagram. The measurements reveal the thermal stability of the different linear DS phases with the transition temperature found to be a function of phase period. Because of additional complexity in the experimental system (i.e. two-dimensionality and 3-fold symmetry) the linear DS phases transform at higher temperature into commensurate phases of 3-fold symmetry HIC (historically named “hexagonal incommensurate phase”). Different types of HIC phases have been discovered differing in the size of the supercell built out of √3 × √3 domains separated by domain walls of the √7 × √3 phase. The detailed structures of these HIC phases (coverage, binding site, twist angle, etc.) have been deduced from the comparison of STM images and diffraction patterns. After heating the system to even higher temperature the HIC phase transforms into the disordered phase. For sufficiently high coverage a SIC (“striped incommensurate phase” which is also built from √3 × √3 domains but meandering √7 × √3 domain walls) is observed which also disorders at high temperatures.  相似文献

The co-adsorption of CO and O on the unreconstructed (1 × 1) phase of Ir{1 0 0} was examined by low energy electron diffraction (LEED) and temperature programmed desorption (TPD). When CO is adsorbed at 188 K onto the Ir{1 0 0} surface precovered with 0.5 ML O, a mixed c(4 × 2)-(2O + CO) overlayer is formed. All CO is oxidised upon heating and desorbs as CO2 in three distinct stages at 230 K, 330 K and 430 K in a 2:1:2 ratio. The excess oxygen left on the surface after all CO has reacted forms an overlayer with a LEED pattern with p(2 × 10) periodicity. This overlayer consists of stripes with a local p(2 × 1)-O arrangement of oxygen atoms separated by stripes of uncovered Ir. When CO is adsorbed at 300 K onto the surface precovered with 0.5 ML O an apparent (2 × 2) LEED pattern is observed. LEED IV analysis reveals that this pattern is a superposition of diffraction patterns from islands of c(2 × 2)-CO and p(2  × 1)-O structures on the surface. Heating this co-adsorbed overlayer leads to the desorption of CO2 in two stages at 330 K and 430 K; the excess CO (0.1 ML) desorbs at 590 K.LEED IV structural analysis of the mixed c(4 × 2) O and CO overlayer shows that both the CO molecules and the O atoms occupy bridge sites. The O atoms show significant lateral displacements of 0.14 Å away from the CO molecules; the C-O bond is slightly expanded with respect to the gas phase (1.19 Å); the modifications of the Ir substrate with respect to the bulk-terminated surface are very small.  相似文献

We demonstrate that the Ba-induced Si(1 1 1)3 × 2 reconstruction is a physical realization of a one-dimensional antiferromagnetic Ising model with long-range Coulomb interactions. Monte Carlo simulations performed on a corresponding Coulomb-gas model, which we construct based on density-functional calculations, reveal an adsorbate-ordering phase transition at finite temperature. We show numerically that this unusual one-dimensional phase transition should be detectable by low-energy electron diffraction.  相似文献

The ordered arrays of Ag nanowires and nanodots have been grown in ultra-high vacuum on the Si(5 5 7) surface containing regular steps of three bilayer height. Formation of Ag nanostructures have been studied by scanning tunneling microscopy, low energy electron diffraction and Auger electron spectroscopy at room temperature. It was shown that a sample exposure in the vacuum before Ag growth affects the shape of the forming Ag islands. This effect is caused by oxygen adsorption on the silicon surface from the residual atmosphere in the vacuum chamber. When Ag is deposited on the clean silicon surface the islands, overlapping several (1 1 1) neighboring terraces, form. The arrays of silver nanowires elongated along steps and silver nanodots, arranged in lines parallel to the steps, can be formed on the Si(5 5 7) surface depending on the amount of adsorbed oxygen.  相似文献

Lead (Pb) has been a prototypical system to study diffusion and reconstruction of silicon surfaces. However, there is a discrepancy in literature regarding the critical coverage at which island formation takes place in the Stranski-Krastanov (S-K) mode. We address this issue by studying the initial stages of evolution of the Pb/Si(1 1 1)7 × 7 system by careful experiments in ultra-high vacuum with in situ characterization by auger electron spectroscopy, electron energy loss spectroscopy and low-energy electron diffraction. We have adsorbed Pb onto clean Si(1 1 1 )7 × 7 surface with sub-monolayer control at different flux rates of 0.05 ML/min, 0.14 ML/min and 0.22 ML/min, at room temperature. The results clearly show that the coverage of the Pb adlayer before the onset of 3D Pb islands in the S-K mode depends on the flux rates. LEED results show the persistence of the (7 × 7) substrate reconstruction until the onset of the island formation, while EELS results do not show any intermixing at the interface. This suggests that the flux rates influence the kinetics of growth and the passivation of dangling bonds to result in the observed rate-dependent adlayer coverages.  相似文献

With the aim of comparing initial Ge adsorption and desorption modes on different surface terminations of 4H-SiC(0 0 0 1) faces, 3 × 3, √3×√3R30° (R3) and 6√3×6√3R30° (6R3) reconstructions, of decreasing Si surface richness, have been prepared by standard surface preparation procedures. They are controlled by reflection high energy electron diffraction (RHEED), low energy electron diffraction and photoemission. One monolayer of Ge has been deposited similarly at room temperature on each of these three surfaces, followed by the same set of isochronal heatings at increasing temperatures up to complete Ge desorption. At each step of heating, the structural and chemical status of the Ge ad-layer has been probed. Marked differences between the Si- (3 × 3 and R3) and C-rich (6R3) terminations have been obtained. Ge wetting layers are only obtained up to 400 °C on 3 × 3 and R3 surfaces in the form of a 4 × 4 reconstruction. The wetting is more complete on the R3 surface, whose atomic structure is the closest to an ideally Si-terminated 1 × 1 SiC surface. At higher temperatures, the wetting layer stage transiets in Ge polycrystallites followed by the unexpected appearance on the 3 × 3 surface of a more ordered Si island structure. It denotes a Si clustering of the initial Si 3 × 3 excess, induced by the presence of Ge. A phase separation mechanism between Si and Ge prevails therefore over alloying by Ge supply onto a such Si-terminated 3 × 3 surface. Conversely, no wetting is obtained on the 6R3 surface and island formation of exclusively pure Ge takes place already at low temperature. These islands exhibit a better epitaxial relationship characterized by Ge(1 1 1)//SiC(0 0 0 1) and Ge〈1 1 −2〉//SiC〈1 −1 0 0〉, ascertained by a clear RHEED spot pattern. The absence of any Ge-C bond signature in the X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy Ge core lines indicates a dominant island nucleation on heterogeneous regions of the surface denuded by the 6R3 graphite pavings. Owing to the used annealing cycles, the deposited Ge amount desorbs on the three surfaces at differentiated temperatures ranging from 950 to 1200 °C. These differences probably reflect the varying morphologies formed at lower temperature on the different surfaces. Considering all these results, the use of imperfect 6R3 surfaces appears to be suited to promote the formation of pure and coherent Ge islands on SiC.  相似文献

The Yb growth on a vicinal Si(1 0 0) surface has been studied by scanning tunneling microscopy and low energy electron diffraction in the coverage range of 1-4 ML. Two different methods of the Yb/Si(1 0 0) interface formation are applied, leading to a remarkable modification of structural and morphological properties of two-dimensional (2D) wetting layer and Yb silicide phase. In particular, the switchover of the 2D layer orientation, similar to the case of the Bi nanolines on Si(1 0 0) [J.H.G. Owen, K. Miki, D.R. Bowler, J. Mater. Sci. 41 (2006) 4568], is observed depending on the growth procedure. Moreover, the structure and morphology of the Yb silicide phase is found to depend critically on the growth conditions, and the ability to grow very long, unidirectional Yb silicide nanowires is demonstrated. The results obtained are discussed in the context of the previous studies of 1D nanowires and 3D islands of rare-earth silicides on Si(1 0 0).  相似文献

The initial Ge growth stages on a (√3 × √3)R30°-reconstructed SiC(0 0 0 1) surface (√3) have been studied using a complete set of surface techniques such as reflection high energy electron diffraction (RHEED), low energy electron diffraction (LEED), atomic force microscopy (AFM) and photoemission and compared with similar Si surface enrichments in place of Ge. The investigations essentially focus on the wetting growth-regimes that are favoured by the use of the √3 surface as a starting substrate, this surface being the closest to a smooth and ideally truncated Si-terminated face of hexagonal SiC(0 0 0 1). Depending on temperature and Ge or Si coverages, varying surface organizations are obtained. They range from unorganized layer by layer growths to relaxed Ge(1 1 1) or Si(1 1 1) island growths, through intermediate attempts of coherent and strained Ge or Si surface layers, characterized by 4 × 4 and 3 × 3 surface reconstructions, respectively. RHEED intensity oscillation recordings, as a function of Ge or Si deposited amounts, have been particularly helpful to pinpoint the limited (by the high lattice mismatch) existence domains of these interesting coherent phases, either in terms of formation temperature or surface coverages. Prominently comparable data for these two Ge- and Si-related reconstructions allow us to propose an atomic model for the still unexplained Ge-4 × 4 one. It is based on a same local organization in trimer and ad-atom units for the Ge excess as admitted for the Si-excess of the 3 × 3 surface, the higher strain nevertheless favouring arrangements, for the Ge-units, in 4 × 4 arrays instead of 3 × 3 Si ones. Admitting such models, 1.25 and 1.44 monolayers of Ge and Si, should, respectively, be able to lie coherently on SiC, with respective lattice mismatches near 30% and 25%. The experimental RHEED-oscillations values are compatible with such theoretical ones. Moreover, these RHEED coverage determinations (for layer completion, for instance) inform us in turn about the initial Si richness of the starting √3 reconstruction and help us to discriminate between earlier contradictory atomic models proposed in the literature.  相似文献

We report on the growth of thin Co films on Pd(1 1 1) at three different temperatures 180 K, 300 K, and 550 K. The structure and morphology was determined by scanning tunneling microscopy and low energy electron diffraction. The growth mode was found to vary with temperature. For 180 K and 300 K, we observed a tendency to double layer growth for the initial layers while at elevated temperatures, the initial film grows in single layer. For most conditions, non-ideal three-dimensional growth was observed. Two-dimensional growth was only found for growth temperature of 550 K and coverages above 5 ML. Depending on temperature, the Co islands at low coverages exhibit three principally different shapes: dendritic at 180 K, hexagonal at 300 K and triangular at 550 K. For growth at 550 K and coverages above 5 ML, the islands changed to an irregular shape. This transition is most likely responsible for the transition to 2D growth. Further, the large strain is relaxed by the creation of a dislocation network with mixed fcc and hcp stacking. Depending on the temperature and coverage, a hexagonal or a triangular network was observed. Finally, we have investigated the effect of annealing Co films prepared at 180 K and 300 K. Heating to 490 K leads to coarsening and intermixing.  相似文献

We have studied the dislocation structures that occur in films of Ag, Au, and Ag0.5Au0.5 alloy on a Ru(0 0 0 1) substrate. Monolayer (ML) films form herringbone phases while films two or more layers thick contain triangular patterns of dislocations. We use scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and low-energy electron diffraction (LEED) to determine how the film composition affects the structure and periodicity of these ordered structures. One layer of Ag forms two different herringbone phases depending on the exact Ag coverage and temperature. Low-energy electron microscopy (LEEM) establishes that a reversible, first-order phase transition occurs between these two phases at a certain temperature. We critically compare our 1 ML Ag structures to conflicting results from an X-ray scattering study [H. Zajonz et al., Phys. Rev. B 67 (2003) 155417]. Unlike Ag, the herringbone phases of Au and AgAu alloy are independent of the exact film coverage. For two layer films in all three systems, none of the dislocations in the triangular networks thread into the second film layer. In all three systems, the in-plane atomic spacing of the second film layer is nearly the same as in the bulk. Film composition does, however, affect the details of the two layer structures. Ag and Au films form interconnected networks of dislocations, which we refer to as “trigons.” In 2 ML AgAu alloy, the dislocations form a different triangular network that shares features of both trigon and moiré structures. Yet another well-ordered structure, with square symmetry, forms at the boundaries of translational trigon domains in 2 ML Ag films but not in Au films.  相似文献

The room temperature growth mode and the interface reaction of Fe films on single crystalline ZnO(0 0 0 1) substrates prepared in ultra high vacuum (UHV) has been investigated by means of X-ray photoelectron and Auger electron spectroscopy (XPS, AES), low energy electron diffraction (LEED) and low energy ion scattering spectroscopy (LEIS). The results show that Fe grows in the pseudo layer-by-layer mode. At ambient temperature the deposited Fe film reduces the underlying ZnO single crystal resulting in FeO at the interface and metallic Zn, which partially diffuses into the remaining Fe overlayer. Annealing leads to a stepwise oxidation of the Fe to FeO (670 K) and Fe2O3 (820 K). The Fe2O3 mixes with the substrate resulting in two (1 1 1) oriented textures of a spinel phase found by electron backscatter diffraction analysis (EBSD). Fe-based spin-injection may play a vital role for ZnO-based spintronic devices.  相似文献

In the present work HCl-isopropanol treated and vacuum annealed InP(0 0 1) surfaces were studied by means of low-energy electron diffraction (LEED), soft X-ray photoemission (SXPS), and reflectance anisotropy (RAS) spectroscopies. The treatment removes the natural oxide and leaves on the surface a physisorbed overlayer containing InClx and phosphorus. Annealing at 230 °C induces desorption of InClx overlayer and reveals a P-rich (2 × 1) surface. Subsequent annealing at higher temperature induces In-rich (2 × 4) surface. The structural properties of chemically prepared InP(0 0 1) surfaces were found to be similar to those obtained by decapping of As/P-capped epitaxial layers.  相似文献

Room temperature deposition of Sn on Cu(1 0 0) gives rise to a rich variety of surface reconstructions in the submonolayer coverage range. In this work, we report a detailed investigation on the phases appearing and their temperature stability range by using low-energy electron diffraction and surface X-ray diffraction. Previously reported reconstructions in the submonolayer range are p(2 × 2) (for 0.2 ML), p(2 × 6) (for 0.33 ML), ()R45° (for 0.5 ML), and c(4 × 4) (for 0.65 ML). We find a new phase with a structure for a coverage of 0.45 ML. Furthermore, we analyze the temperature stability of all phases. We find that two phases exhibit a temperature induced reversible phase transition: the ()R45° phase becomes ()R45° phase above 360 K, and the new phase becomes p(2 × 2) also above 360 K. The origin of these two-phase transitions is discussed.  相似文献

The formation and stability of Cu, Ag and Au-induced c(2 × 2) alloys at the Mo(1 0 0) and W(1 0 0) surfaces have been investigated with low-energy electron microscopy and diffraction. The ordered alloys transform to disordered overlayer structures at elevated temperature. Comparison of the transformation temperatures with energetics obtained from first principles calculations reveals the vibrational entropic contribution to the system free energy that defines alloy thermal stability. Effective Debye temperatures for metal adatoms are determined that exhibit the expected mass and bond strength dependence.  相似文献

We have studied the adsorption of Pb on the Rh(1 0 0) and (1 1 0) surfaces by photoemission and low energy electron diffraction (LEED), and tested the chemical properties by adsorption of CO. Pb forms two distinct c(2 × 2) phases on Rh(1 0 0), according to the temperature of the substrate. The phase formed below about 570-620 K, denoted α-c(2 × 2), reduces the coverage of adsorbed CO but does not affect the valence band spectrum of the molecule. The phase formed above this temperature, denoted β-c(2 × 2), also reduces the coverage of adsorbed CO but the valence band spectrum of the adsorbed CO is strongly affected. The two phases are also characterised by a slightly different binding energy of the Pb 5d5/2 level, 17.54 eV for the α phase and 17.70 for the β phase. The Pb/Rh(1 1 0) surface shows two ordered Pb induced phases, c(2 × 2) and p(3 × 1). CO adsorbs on the first with reduced heat of adsorption and with a valence band spectrum that is strongly altered with respect to CO adsorbed on clean Rh(1 1 0), but does not adsorb on the p(3 × 1) structure at 300 K. We compare the present results with previous results from related systems.  相似文献

We have used the Bi(0 0 0 1)/Si(1 1 1) template to grow highly ordered C60 epitaxial thin films and analyzed them using scanning tunneling microscopy and low-energy electron microscopy. The in situ low-energy electron microscope investigations show that the initial nucleation of the C60 islands on the surface takes place at surface defects, such as domain boundaries and multiple steps. The in-plane lattice parameters of this C60 film turns out to be the same as that of the bulk fcc(1 1 1) C60. The line-on-line epitaxial structure is realized in spite of a weak interaction between the C60 molecules and Bi(0 0 0 1) surface, while scanning tunneling spectroscopy indicates that there is a negligible charge transfer between the molecules and the surface.  相似文献

Thin film growth of 6,13-pentacenequinone (C24H12O2, PnQ) on Si(1 1 1)-7 × 7 at room temperature (RT) was studied by low-energy electron microscopy (LEEM) and ab initio density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Our experiments yielded direct microscopic observation of enantiomorphic evolution mechanism in the initial stage of the chiral-like growth of PnQ islands, under kinetic growth conditions. We observed that the faster growth direction aligns with the direction of easier molecule incorporation, or lowest kink formation energy, rather than along the lowest energy step. Real time observation of the growth and subsequent relaxation of island shape revealed that kinetically stiff direction differs from the thermodynamic one. This feature together with anisotropic mass incorporation determines the enantiomorphic evolution and rotational arrangement of crystallites during the growth of elongated organic molecules, like PnQ.  相似文献
