The effect of an externally applied electric field on the stability of a thin fluid film over an inclined porous plane is analyzed using linear and non-linear stability analysis in the long wave limit. The principle aim of this study is to illustrate the influence of electric field on the non-linear stability of a thin liquid layer flow down incline substrate when the plane is porous. The driving force for the instability under an electric field is an electrostatic force exerted on the free charges accumulated at the dividing interface. The coupled non-linear evolution equations for the local film thickness and the interfacial charge for two-dimensional disturbances are derived to analyze the effect of long-wave instabilities. The method of multiple scales is applied to obtain approximate solutions and analyze the stability criteria. Numerical simulations of this system of non-linear evolution equations are performed. It is found that the permeability parameter as well as the inclination of the plane plays a destabilizing role in the stability criteria, while the damping influence is observed for increasing of the electrical conductivity in both linear and non-linear behavior.

The example of two non-stationary forces is used to study the impact of external influences leading to the occurrence of additional ponderomotive forces on the wave regimes of the film freely flowing down a vertical surface. The first case describes a ferromagnetic fluid film affected by the magnetic field, and the second case touches upon a dielectric fluid film affected by the electric field. For the given forces, in the case of small flow rates, the problem is reduced to the solution of a model equation for the perturbation of the film thickness. The numerical solutions of the problem are obtained, and several characteristic scenarios of evolution of periodical perturbations are considered. It is shown that changes in the boundaries of the region of linear stability of the unperturbed flow with a flat free surface under the influence of ponderomotive forces have a great impact on the flow.

The development of stationary patterns on a thin polymer surface subject to an electric field is studied by means of the hexagonal-planform weakly nonlinear stability analysis and numerical simulations. The time evolution of the interface between the air and the polymer film on the unbounded spatial domain is described by a thin film equation, incorporating the electric driving force and the surface diffusion. The nonlinear interfacial growth includes the amplitude equations and superposition of one-dimensional structures at regular orientations. The pattern selection is driven by the subcritical instability mechanism in which the relative thickness of the polymer film plays a critical role.

Waves that occur at the surface of a falling film of thin power-law fluid on a vertical plane are investigated. Using the method of integral relations an evolution equation is derived for two types of waves equation which are possible under long wave approximation. This equation reveals the presence of both kinematic and dynamic wave processes which may either act together or singularly dominate the wave field depending on the order of different parameters. It is shown that, at a small flow rate, kinematic waves dominate the flow field and the energy is acquired from the mean flow during the interaction of the waves, while, for high flow rate, inertial waves dominate and the energy comes from the kinematic waves. It is also found that this exchange of energy between kinematic and inertial waves strongly depends on the power-law index n. Linear stability analysis predicts the contribution of different terms in the wave mechanism. Further, it is found that the surface tension plays a double role: for a kinematic wave process, it exerts dissipative effects so that a finite amplitude case may be established, but for a dynamic wave process it yields dispersion. Further, it is shown that the non-Newtonian character n plays a vital role in controlling the role of the term that contains surface tension in the above processes.

An analytical study of slow modulation has been made of cylindrical interface between two inviscid streaming fluids, in the presence of a relaxation of electrical charges at the interface, and stressed by an axial electric field. A new technique based on the perturbation theory, to derive the non-linear evolution equations has been introduced. These equations are combined to yield a non-linear Ginzburg–Landau equation and a non-linear modified Schrödinger equation describing the evolution of wave packets. The linear analysis showed that the streaming has a destabilizing effect and the electric field has stabilizing influence associated with parameters condition involving the electric conductivity and permittivity of the fluids. While the non-linear approach indicated that the streaming may become unstable for sufficiently high velocities, with a new condition on the material properties, involving weak electric relaxation times in both fluids.

The present work deals with temporal stability properties of a falling liquid film down an inclined plane in the presence of a parallel subsonic gas flow. The waves are described by evolution equation previously derived as a generalization of the model for the Newtonian liquid. We confirm linear stability results of the basic flow using the Orr–Sommerfeld analysis to that obtained by long wave approximation analysis. The non-linear stability criteria of the model are discussed analytically and stability branches are obtained. Finally, the solitary wave solutions at the liquid–gas interface are discussed, using specially envelope transform and direct ansatz approach to Ginzburg–Landau equation. The influence of different parameters governing the flow on the stability behavior of the system is discussed in detail.

Axisymmetric flow of thin pure liquid film on a spinning horizontal annular disk is studied under the action of air shear at the liquid–air interface and evaporation. The non-linear evolution equation that is obtained by singular perturbation method is solved analytically, for small Reynolds number, by using the method of characteristic and numerically by the use of Newton–Kantorovich method for any Reynolds number. Font breakdown time and its location from the center of the disk is predicted both by analytically and numerically. The result shows that the thinning of the initial film increases as air stress increase, same result is also escalated in presence of evaporation.

The flow of a viscous liquid film down a vertical cylinder in the gravity field is considered. In the case of small Reynolds numbers for long-wave perturbations on a cylinder of radius much greater than the film thickness, the problem can be reduced to a single nonlinear equation for the evolution of the film thickness perturbation. For axially symmetric solutions, this equation coincides with the well-known Sivashinsky-Kuramoto equation. The results of a numerical analysis of this equation for three-dimensional stationary traveling solutions of the problem are reported. The effect of the problem parameters on the solution behavior is demonstrated. Soliton type solutions are presented.

The flow of a thin film of a nonlinearly viscous fluid whose stress tensor is modeled by a power law, flowing down a vertical plane in the field of gravity, is considered. For the case of low flow rates, an equation that describes the evolution of surface disturbances is derived in the long-wave approximation. The domain of linear stability of the trivial solution is found, and weakly nonlinear, steady-state travelling solutions of this equation are obtained. The mechanism of branching of solution families at the singular point of the neutral curve is described. __________ Translated from Prikladnaya Mekhanika i Tekhnicheskaya Fizika, Vol. 46, No. 3, pp. 73–84, May–June, 2005.

The time evolution of superposed layers of fluid flowing down inside an inclined permeable channel is investigated. Using the Kármán-Pohlhausen approximation, the problem is reduced to the study of the evolution equation for the liquid–liquid interface of the liquids film derived through a long-wave approximation. A linear stability analysis of the base flow is performed. The solutions and stability of the non-linear stationary long waves are investigated. A special form of the stationary long waves (say Shkadov waves) is introduced.

Based on the von Karman plate theory of large deflection, we have derived a non-linear partial differential equation for the vibration of a thin orthotropic plate under the combined action of a transverse magnetic field and a transverse harmonic mechanical load. The influence of the magnetic field is due to the magnetic Lorentz force induced by the eddy current. By employing the Bubnov-Galerkin method, the non-linear partial differential equation is transformed into a third-order non-linear ordinary differential equation. The amplitude-frequency equations are further derived by means of the multiple-scale method. As numerical examples for an orthotropic plate made of silver, the influence of the magnetic field, orthotropic material property, plate thickness, and the mechanical load on the principal resonance behavior is investigated. The higher-order effect and stability of the solution are also discussed.

In this work we develop a mathematical model to predict the velocity profile for an unidirectional, incompressible and steady flow of an Oldroyd 6-constant fluid. The fluid is electrically conducting by a transverse magnetic field. The developed governing equation is non-linear. This equation is solved analytically to obtain the general solution. The governing non-linear equation is also solved numerically subject to appropriate boundary conditions (three cases of typical plane shearing flows) by an iterative technique with the finite-difference discretizations. A parametric study of the physical parameters involved in the problems such as the applied magnetic field and the material constants is conducted. The obtained results are illustrated graphically to show salient features of the solutions. Numerical results show that the applied magnetic field tends to reduce the flow velocity. Depending on the choice of the material parameters, the fluid exhibits shear-thickening or shear-thinning behaviours.

This paper investigates the dynamics of cantilevered CNTs conveying fluid in longitudinal magnetic field and presents the possibility of controlling/tuning the stability of the CNT system with the aid of magnetic field. The slender CNT is treated as an Euler-Bernoulli beam. Based on nonlocal elasticity theory, the equation of motion with consideration of magnetic field effect is developed. This partial differential equation is then discretized using the differential quadrature method(DQM). Numerical results show that the nonlocal small-scale parameter makes the fluid-conveying CNT more flexible and can shift the unstable mode in which flutter instability occurs first at sufficiently high flow velocity from one to another. More importantly, the addition of a longitudinal magnetic field leads to much richer dynamical behaviors of the CNT system. Indeed, the presence of longitudinal magnetic field can significantly affect the evolution of natural frequency of the dynamical system when the flow velocity is successively increased. With increasing magnetic field parameter, it is shown that the CNT system behaves stiffer and hence the critical flow velocity becomes higher. It is of particular interest that when the magnetic field parameter is equal to or larger than the flow velocity, the cantilevered CNT conveying fluid becomes unconditionally stable, indicating that the dynamic stability of the system can be controlled due to the presence of a longitudinal magnetic field.

The flow of a thin film of generalized Newtonian fluid down a vertical wall in the gravity field is considered. For small flow-rates, in the long-wave approximation, an equation describing the evolution of the surface perturbations is obtained. Depending on the signs of the coefficients, this equation is equivalent to one of four equations with solutions significantly different in evolutionary behavior. For the most interesting case, soliton solutions are numerically found.

A thin film flow of a viscous liquid flowing down a vertical wall in the field of the gravity force is studied. The values of temperatures on the solid wall and on the free surface are constant. The viscosity and thermal diffusivity are functions of temperature. An equation that describes the evolution of surface disturbances is derived for small flow rates in the long-wave approximation. __________ Translated from Prikladnaya Mekhanika i Tekhnicheskaya Fizika, Vol. 49, No. 2, pp. 89–97, March–April, 2008.
