The stress–strain diagrams and ultimate tensile properties of uncompatibilized and compatibilized hydrogenated polybutadiene‐block‐poly(methyl methacrylate) (HPB‐b‐PMMA) blends with 20 wt % poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) droplets dispersed in a low‐density polyethylene (LDPE) matrix were studied. The HPB‐b‐PMMA pure diblock copolymer was prepared via controlled living anionic polymerization. Four copolymers, in terms of the molecular weights of the hydrogenated polybutadiene (HPB) and PMMA sequences (22,000–12,000, 63,300–31,700, 49,500–53,500, and 27,700–67,800), were used. We demonstrated with the stress–strain diagrams, in combination with scanning electron microscopy observations of deformed specimens, that the interfacial adhesion had a predominant role in determining the mechanism and extent of blend deformation. The debonding of PMMA particles from the LDPE matrix was clearly observed in the compatibilized blends in which the copolymer was not efficiently located at the interface. The best HPB‐b‐PMMA copolymer, resulting in the maximum improvement of the tensile properties of the compatibilized blend, had a PMMA sequence that was approximately half that of the HPB block. Because of the much higher interactions encountered in the PMMA phase in comparison with those in HPB (LDPE), a shorter sequence of PMMA (with respect to HPB but longer than the critical molecular weight for entanglement) was sufficient to favor a quantitative location of the copolymer at the LDPE/PMMA interface. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. This paper describes a method to obtain polymer blends by the absorption of a liquid solution of monomer, initiator, and a crosslinking agent in suspension type porous poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) particles, forming a dry blend. These PVC/monomer dry blends are reactively polymerized in a twin‐screw extruder to obtain the in situ polymerization in a melt state of various blends: PVC/poly(methyl methacrylate) (PVC/PMMA), PVC/poly(vinyl acetate) (PVC/PVAc), PVC/poly(butyl acrylate) (PVC/PBA) and PVC/poly(ethylhexyl acrylate) (PVC/PEHA). Physical PVC/PMMA blends were produced, and the properties of those blends are compared to reactive blends of similar compositions. Owing to the high polymerization temperature (180°C), the polymers formed in this reactive polymerization process have low molecular weight. These short polymer chains plasticize the PVC phase reducing the melt viscosity, glass transition and the static modulus. Reactive blends of PVC/PMMA and PVC/PVAc are more compatible than the reactive PVC/PBA and PVC/PEHA blends. Reactive PVC/PMMA and PVC/PVAc blends are transparent, form single phase morphology, have single glass transition temperature (Tg), and show mechanical properties that are not inferior than that of neat PVC. Reactive PVC/PBA and PVC/PEHA blends are incompatible and two discrete phases are observed in each blend. However, those blends exhibit single glass transition owing to low content of the dispersed phase particles, which is probably too low to be detected by dynamic mechanical thermal analysis (DMTA) as a separate Tg value. The reactive PVC/PEHA show exceptional high elongation at break (~90%) owing to energy absorption optimized at this dispersed particle size (0.2–0.8 µm). The dynamic mechanical and thermal properties of natural rubber/poly (methyl methacrylate) blends (NR/PMMA) with and without the addition of graft copolymer (NR‐g‐PMMA) have been investigated. Dynamic mechanical spectroscopy is used to examine the effect of compatibilizer loading on storage modulus (E′), loss modulus (E″) and loss tangent (tan δ) at different temperatures and at different frequencies. The morphology of the blends indicates that the size of the dispersed phase decreased by the addition of a few percent of the graft copolymer followed by a leveling off at higher concentrations. This is an indication of interfacial saturation. Attempts have been made to correlate morphology with dynamic mechanical properties. Various models have been used to fit the experimental viscoelastic results. Differential scanning calorimetry has been used to analyze the glass‐transition temperatures of the blends. The thermal stability of the blends has been analyzed by thermogravimetry. Compatibilized blends are found to be more thermally stable than uncompatibilized blends. Finally the miscibility and mechanical properties of the blends annealed above Tg are evaluated. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Polym Sci B: Polym Phys 38: 525–536, 2000  相似文献

Phase morphology exerts a tremendous influence on the properties of polymer blends. The development of the blend morphology depends not only on the intrinsic structure of the component polymers but also on extrinsic factors such as viscosity ratio, shearing force and temperature in the melt processing. In this study, various poly (butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) (PBAT) materials with different melt viscosity were prepared, and then poly (lactic acid) (PLA)/PBAT blends with different viscosity ratio were prepared in a counter-rotating twin-screw extruder under constant processing conditions. The influence of viscosity ratio on the morphology, mechanical, thermal and rheological properties of PLA/PBAT (70/30 w/w) blends was investigated. The experimental results showed that the morphology and properties of PLA/PBAT blends strongly depended on the viscosity ratio. Finer size PBAT phase were observed for viscosity ratio less than 1 (λ < 1) compared to samples with λ > 1. It was found that the interfacial tensions of PLA and PBAT were significantly different when the viscosity ratio was changed, the lowest interfacial tensions (0.12 mN/m) was obtained when the viscosity was 0.77. Additionally, the maximal tensile strength in PLA/PBAT blends were obtained when the viscosity ratio was 0.44, while the maximal impact properties were obtained when the viscosity ratio was 1.95.  相似文献

Glycerol-plasticized starch (TPS)/polyamide 12 (PA12) blends were processed by melt mixing using two types of interfacial agent, i.e. diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A and a poly(ethylene-co-butyl acrylate-co-maleic anhydride) copolymer. Morphologies of the blends were tailored from the nature and amount of the interfacial agents. The average size of the dispersed phase was shown to decrease with the incorporation of the reactive agents and was proved to respect models, usually employed for conventional blends, for size predictions of the dispersed phase. By means of rheological experiments, it has been investigated whether the size reduction of the dispersed phase was coming from the compatibilization of the blend or from the viscosity changes due to chain extension in the matrix. The influence of the coupling agents on the viscoelastic behavior of the blend was characterized. Both interfacial agents led to increase the absolute complex viscosity but in the case of diepoxy reactive agent, the Newtonian flow behavior of complex viscosity totally disappeared in the low-frequency region. Mechanical properties of the TPS/PA12 blends were characterized and were proved to be strongly impacted by the use of interfacial agents. Elongation at break was enhanced as a consequence of a better adhesion between the matrix and the dispersed phase, whereas a decrease of the Young’s modulus was observed with increasing DGEBA content. Polyamide 12 crystallization in TPS/PA12 blends was found to be strongly dependent on DGEBA content while the introduction of maleic anhydride-grafted copolymer had no influence.  相似文献

Poly(butylene terephthalate) (PBT)/styrene‐acrylonitrile copolymer (SAN) blends were investigated with respect to their phase morphology. The SAN component was kept as dispersed phase and PBT as matrix phase and the PBT/SAN viscosity ratio was changed by using different PBT molecular weights. PBT/SAN blends were also compatibilized by adding methyl methacrylate‐co‐glycidyl methacrylate‐co‐ethyl acrylate terpolymer, MGE, which is an in situ reactive compatibilizer for melt blending. In noncompatibilized blends, the dispersed phase particle size increased with SAN concentration due to coalescence effects. Static coalescence experiments showed evidence of greater coalescence in blends with higher viscosity ratios. For noncompatibilized PBT/SAN/MGE blends with high molecular weight PBT as matrix phase, the average particle size of SAN phase does not depend on the SAN concentration in the blends. However noncompatibilized blends with low molecular weight PBT showed a significant increase in SAN particle size with the SAN concentration. The effect of MGE epoxy content and MGE molecular weight on the morphology of the PBT/SAN blend was also investigated. As the MGE epoxy content increased, the average particle size of SAN initially decreased with both high and low molecular weight PBT phase, thereafter leveling off with a critical content of epoxy groups in the blend. This critical content was higher in the blends containing low molecular weight PBT than in those with high molecular weight PBT. At a fixed MGE epoxy content, a decrease in MGE molecular weight yielded PBT/SAN blends with dispersed nanoparticles with an average size of about 40 nm. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Blends of poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) and thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) in different compositions viz., 95/5, 90/10, 85/15 and 80/20 (by wt/wt, % of PMMA/TPU) were blended by melt mixing using a twin‐screw extruder. All the PMMA/TPU blends have been characterized for physico‐mechanical properties such as density, melt flow index, tensile behavior and izod impact strength. The impact strength of the PMMA/TPU blends were found to increase significantly with an increase in the percentage of TPU up to 20%, by retaining the tensile strength of PMMA. The effect of chemical aging on the performance of blends has been studied.  相似文献

Toughening of reactive poly(butylene terephthalate) (PBT)/styrene-acrylonitrile copolymer (SAN) blends was studied. PBT/SAN with glycidyl methacrylate (SAN-GMA) (70/30) behaved in ductile manner on tensile test, while PBT/SAN (70/30) blend failed in brittle manner. Additionally, poly[methylene (phenylene isocyanate)] (PMPI) was added to the PBT/SAN-GMA blend, where it was expected that PMPI would assist the reaction between PBT and SAN-GMA, and then the strain at break was improved. PBT/SAN/PMPI (70/30/4) also behaved in ductile manner, although the interfacial adhesion strength between matrix and dispersed phase was extremely weaker than that in PBT/SAN-GMA blend. From the results, it was found that PMPI acted as a compatibilizer without copolymer formation at the interface and then PBT/SAN behaved in ductile manner in higher SAN content by PMPI effect.  相似文献

We investigate the compatibilizing performance of a random copolymer in the melt state, using transmission electron microscopy. Blends of polystyrene (PS) and poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) are chosen as a model system, and a random copolymer of styrene and methyl methacrylate (SMMA) with 70 wt % styrene is used as a compatibilizer. From TEM photographs it is clear that SMMA moves to the interface between PS and PMMA domains during melt mixing, and forms encapsulating layers. However, the characteristic size of the dispersed phase increases gradually with annealing time for all blend systems studied. This demonstrates that the encapsulating layer of SMMA does not provide stability against static coalescence, which calls into question the effectiveness of random copolymers as practical compatibilizers. We interpret the encapsulation by random copolymers in terms of a simple model for ternary polymer blends. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Polym Sci B: Polym Phys 35: 2835–2842, 1997  相似文献

ABSTRACT

To investigate the effect of reactive compatibilization in the immiscible poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET)/low-density polyethylene (LDPE) blend, ethylene-propylene copolymer-g-methacryloyl carbamate (MEPM) was prepared and used as a reactive compatibilizer. The inter-facial reaction of carbamate group in MEPM with OH/COOH in PET was confirmed by measuring the interfacial tension between the PET and LDPE using the breaking thread method. The two-step blending process strongly influenced the blend morphology at high concentration of the dispersed phase in the blend. The MEPM showed a discrepancy in the reactive compatibilization ability with a blend sequence in the blends of different dispersed phase concentration.  相似文献

The stability against the thermal annealing of a cocontinuous two‐phase morphology developed in polystyrene (PS)/low‐density polyethylene (LDPE) blends containing 80 wt % PS was investigated. Blends containing 1, 5, and 10 wt % of a tapered diblock poly(styrene‐block‐hydrogenated butadiene) (P(S‐b‐hB)) or triblock poly(styrene‐block‐hydrogenated butadiene‐block‐styrene) (P(S‐hB‐S)) copolymer were melt‐blended with roll‐mill mixing equipment. The efficiency of each of the two copolymers in stabilizing against coalescence the cocontinuous morphology was examined. The tensile properties of the resulting blends, annealed and nonannealed, were also examined in relation to the morphology induced by thermal annealing. The phase morphology was studied by optical and scanning electron microscopy. With computer‐aided image analysis, it was possible to obtain a measurable characteristic parameter to quantify the cocontinuous phase morphology. When it was necessary, the extraction of one phase with a selective solvent was performed. Although the observed differences were subtle, the tapered diblock exhibited a more efficient compatibilizing activity than the triblock copolymer, particularly at a low concentration of about 2 wt %. The superiority of the tapered diblock over the triblock might be due to its ability to quantitatively locate at the LDPE/PS interface and consequently form a more efficient barrier against the subsequent breakup of the elongated structures of the cocontinuous phase morphology. The tensile properties of the triblock‐modified blends were more sensitive to thermal annealing than the tapered‐modified ones. This deficiency was ascribed to the phase morphology coarsening of the dispersed polyethylene phase. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part B: Polym Phys 41: 202–216, 2003  相似文献

Poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) and thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) blends in different compositions viz., 95/05, 90/10, 85/15 and 80/20 (by wt/wt% of PMMA/TPU) have been prepared by melt mixing using a twin screw extruder. The thermal stability of these blends has been characterized by thermogravimetric (TG) analysis. All the blends are stable up to 381°C and complete degradation occurs at 488°C. A slight improvement in thermal stability was noticed with an increase in TPU content in the blends. Surface morphology of the blends has been studied by an optical microscope. Optical microphotographs revealed two‐phase morphology for all the blends.  相似文献

Immiscible ternary blends of PET/EVA/PP (PET as the matrix and (PP/EVA) composition ratio = 1/1) were prepared by melt mixing. Scanning electron microscope results showed core‐shell type morphology for this ternary blend. Binary blends of PET/PP and PET/EVA were also prepared as control samples. Two grades of EVA with various viscosities, one higher and the other one lower than that of PP, were used to investigate the effect of components' viscosity on the droplet size of disperse phase. The effect of interfacial tension, elasticity, and viscosity on the disperse phase size of both binary and ternary blends was investigated. Variation of tensile modulus of both binary and ternary blends with dispersed phase content was also studied. Experimental results obtained for modulus of PET/EVA binary blends, showed no significant deviations from Takayanagi model, where considerable deviations were observed for PET/PP binary blends. Here, this model that has been originally proposed for binary blends was improved to become applicable for the prediction of the tensile modulus of ternary blends. The new modified model showed good agreement with the experimental data obtained in this study. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part B: Polym Phys 48: 251–259, 2010  相似文献

A novel route for producing polymer blends by reactive extrusion is described, starting from poly (vinyl chloride)/methyl methacrylate (PVC/MMA) dry blend and successive polymerization of MMA in an extruder. Small angle X‐ray scattering (SAXS) measurements were applied to study the monomer's mode of penetration into the PVC particles and to characterize the supermolecular structure of the reactive poly(vinyl chloride)/poly(methyl methacrylate) (PVC/PMMA) blends obtained, as compared to the corresponding physical blends of similar composition. These measurements indicate that the monomer molecules can easily penetrate into the PVC sub‐primary particles, separating the PVC chains. Moreover, the increased mobility of the PVC chains enables formation of an ordered lamellar structure, with an average d‐spacing of 4.1 nm. The same characteristic lamellar structure is further detected upon compression molding or extrusion of PVC and PVC/PMMA blends. In this case the mobility of the PVC chains is enabled through thermal energy. Dynamic mechanical thermal analysis (DMTA) and SAXS measurements of reactive and physical PVC/PMMA blends indicate that miscibility occurs between the PVC and PMMA chains. The studied reactive PVC/PMMA blends are found to be miscible, while the physical PVC/PMMA blends are only partially miscible. It can be suggested that the miscible PMMA chains weaken dipole–dipole interactions between the PVC chains, leading to high mobility and resulting in an increased PVC crystallinity degree and decreased PVC glass transition temperature (Tg). These phenomena are shown in the physical PVC/PMMA blends and further emphasized in the reactive PVC/PMMA blends.

This paper reports on the interfacial behaviour of block and graft copolymers used as compatibilizers in immiscible polymer blends. A limited residence time of the copolymer at the interface has been shown in both reactive blending and blend compatibilization by preformed copolymers. Polystyrene (PS)/polyamide6 (PA6), polyphenylene oxide (PPO)/PA6 and polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA)/PA6 blends have been reactively compatibilized by a styrene-maleic anhydride copolymer SMA. The extent of miscibility of SMA with PS, PPO and PMMA is a key criterion for the stability of the graft copolymer at the interface. For the first 10 to 15 minutes of mixing, the in situ formed copolymer is able to decrease the particle size of the dispersed phase and to prevent it from coalescencing. However, upon increasing mixing time, the copolymer leaves the interface which results in phase coalescence. In PS/LDPE blends compatibilized by preformed PS/hydrogenated polybutadiene (hPB) block copolymers, a tapered diblock stabilizes efficiently a co-continuous two-phase morphology, in contrast to a triblock copolymer that was unable to prevent phase coarsening during annealing at 180°C for 150 minutes.  相似文献

The low‐temperature mechanical behavior of semicrystalline polymer blends is investigated. Isotactic polypropylene (iPP) is blended with both Zeigler–Natta polyethylene (PE) and metallocene PE. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) on failed tensile bars reveals that the predominate failure mode in the Zeigler–Natta blend is interfacial, while that in the metallocene blend is failure of the iPP matrix. The observed change in failure mode is accompanied by a 40% increase in both tensile toughness and elongation at −10 °C. We argue that crystallite anchoring of interfacially entangled chains is responsible for this dramatic property improvement in the metallocene blend. The interfacial width between PE and iPP melts is approximately 40 Å, allowing significant interfacial entanglement in both blends. TEM micrographs illustrate that the segregation of low molecular weight amorphous material in the Zeigler–Natta blend reduces the number and quality of crystallite anchors as compared with the metallocene blend. The contribution of anchored interfacial structure was further explored by introducing a block copolymer at the PE/iPP interface in the metallocene blend. Small‐angle X‐ray scattering (SAXS) experiments show the block copolymer dilutes the number of crystalline anchors, decoupling the interface. Increasing the interfacial coverage of the block copolymer reduces the number of anchored interfacial chains. At 2% block copolymer loading, the low‐temperature failure mode of the metallocene blend changes from iPP failure to interfacial failure, reducing the blend toughness and elongation to that of the Zeigler–Natta blend. This work demonstrates that anchored interfacial entanglements are a critical factor in designing semicrystalline blends with improved low‐temperature properties. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. We investigated the chemical fixation of carbon dioxide (CO 2) to a copolymer bearing epoxide and the application of the cyclic carbonate group containing copolymer to polymer blends. In the synthesis of poly[(2‐oxo‐1,3‐dioxolane‐4‐yl)methyl methacrylate‐co‐styrene] [poly(DOMA‐co‐St)] from the addition of CO 2 to poly(glycidyl methacrylate‐co‐styrene) [poly(GMA‐co‐St)], quaternary ammonium salts showed good catalytic activity at mild reaction conditions. The CO 2 addition reaction followed pseudo first‐order kinetics with the concentration of poly(GMA‐co‐St). In order to expand the applications of the CO 2 fixed copolymer, polymer blends of this copolymer with poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) or poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) were cast from N,N′‐dimethylformamide (DMF) solution. Miscibility of blends of poly(DOMA‐co‐St) with PMMA or PVC have been investigated both by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and visual inspection of the blends, and the blends were miscible over the whole composition ranges. The miscibility behaviors were also discussed in terms of FT‐IR spectra. Copyright © 2002 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献
