In this work, the electrochemical formation of alkanethiolate self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) on Ni(111) and polycrystalline Ni surfaces from alkanethiol-containing aqueous 1 M NaOH solutions was studied by combining Auger electron spectroscopy (AES), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), electrochemical techniques, and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Results show that alkanethiolates adsorb on Ni concurrent with NiO electroreduction. The resulting surface coverage depends on the applied potential and hydrocarbon chain length. Electrochemical and XPS data reveal that alkanethiolate electroadsorption at room temperature takes place without S-C bond scission, in contrast to previous results from gas-phase adsorption. A complete and dense monolayer, which is stable even at very high cathodic potentials (-1.5 V vs SCE), is formed for dodecanethiol. DFT calculations show that the greater stability against electrodesorption found for alkanethiolate SAMs on Ni, with respect to SAMs on Au, is somewhat related to the larger alkanethiolate adsorption energy but is mainly due to the larger barrier to interfacial electron transfer present in alkanethiolate-covered Ni. A direct consequence of this work is the possibility of using electrochemical self-assembly as a straightforward route to build stable SAMs of long-chained alkanethiolates on Ni surfaces at room temperature.  相似文献

Self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) of 6-mercaptopurine (6MP) on a silver electrode in acid and alkaline media were investigated by a combination protocol of the SERS technique with Raman mapping, and it was found that the adsorption mode of 6MP SAMs changed with the pH value of the environment. Quantum calculations for the vibrational mode were performed by the BLYP/6-31G method. 6MP was adsorbed on the silver electrode with a tilted orientation via S, N1, and N7 atoms in acid medium, while the SAMs adopted head-on adsorption modes with the S atom and the N1 atom anchoring the silver surface in alkaline medium. However, 6MP SAMs turned to the same upright orientation on the electrode through the S and N7 atoms when either acid or basic solution was removed. Stability of 6MP SAMs was observed by in situ SERS spectroelectrochemical measurements. The results reveal that the desorption potentials of 6MP SAMs formed under acid and alkaline conditions from the Ag electrode were at ca. -1.3 V and -1.6 V vs SCE, respectively.  相似文献

We compare the stability of various structures of high coverage self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) of short alkylthiolates, S(CH(2))(n-1)CH(3) (= C(n)), on Ag(111) and Au(111). We employ: (i) the ab initio thermodynamics approach based on density functional theory (DFT) calculations, to compare the stability of SAMs of C(1) (with coverages Θ = 3/7 and 1/3) on both substrates, and (ii) a set of pairwise interatomic potentials derived from second-order M?ller-Plesset (MP2) perturbation theory calculations, to estimate the role of chain-chain (Ch-Ch) interactions in the structure and stability of SAMs of longer chain alkylthiolates. For C(1)/Ag(111) (C(1)/Au(111)) the SAM with Θ = 3/7 is more (less) stable than for Θ = 1/3 in a wide range of temperatures and pressures in line with experiments. In addition, for the molecular densities of SAMs corresponding to Θ = 3/7 and 1/3, the MP2-based Ch-Ch interaction potential also predicts the different chain orientations observed experimentally in SAMs of alkylthiolates on Ag(111) and Au(111). Thus, for short length alkylthiolates, a simple model based on first principles calculations that separately accounts for molecule-surface (M-S) and Ch-Ch interactions succeeds in predicting the main structural differences between the full coverage SAMs usually observed experimentally on Ag(111) and Au(111).  相似文献

We have constructed a group of classical potentials based on ab initio density-functional theory (DFT) calculations to describe the chemical bonding between benzenedithiolate (BDT) molecule and gold atoms, including bond stretching, bond angle bending, and dihedral angle torsion involved at the interface between the molecule and gold clusters. Three DFT functionals, local-density approximation (LDA), PBE0, and X3LYP, have been implemented to calculate single point energies (SPE) for a large number of molecular configurations of BDT-1, 2 Au complexes. The three DFT methods yield similar bonding curves. The variations of atomic charges from Mulliken population analysis within the molecule/metal complex versus different molecular configurations have been investigated in detail. We found that, except for bonded atoms in BDT-1, 2 Au complexes, the Mulliken partial charges of other atoms in BDT are quite stable, which significantly reduces the uncertainty in partial charge selections in classical molecular simulations. Molecular-dynamics (MD) simulations are performed to investigate the structure of BDT self-assembled monolayer (SAM) and the adsorption geometry of S adatoms on Au (111) surface. We found that the bond-stretching potential is the most dominant part in chemical bonding. Whereas the local bonding geometry of BDT molecular configuration may depend on the DFT functional used, the global packing structure of BDT SAM is quite independent of DFT functional, even though the uncertainty of some force-field parameters for chemical bonding can be as large as approximately 100%. This indicates that the intermolecular interactions play a dominant role in determining the BDT SAMs global packing structure.  相似文献

Scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and high-resolution electron energy loss spectroscopy (HREELS) were used to examine the structural transitions and interface dynamics of octanethiol (OT) self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) caused by long-term storage or annealing at an elevated temperature. We found that the structural transitions of OT SAMs from the c(4 x 2) superlattice to the (6 x square root 3) superlattice resulting from long-term storage were caused by both the dynamic movement of the adsorbed sulfur atoms on several adsorption sites of the Au(111) surface and the change of molecular orientation in the ordered layer. Moreover, it was found that the chemical structure of the sulfur headgroups does not change from monomer to dimer by the temporal change of SAMs at room temperature. Contrary to the results of the long-term-stored SAMs, it was found that the annealing process did not modify either the interfacial or chemical structures of the sulfur headgroups or the two-dimensional c(4 x 2) domain structure. Our results will be very useful for a better understanding of the interface dynamics and stability of sulfur atoms in alkanethiol SAMs on Au(111) surfaces.  相似文献

Despite the numerous studies on the self‐assembled monolayers (SAMs) of alkylthiols on gold, the mechanisms involved, especially the nature and influence of the thiol–gold interface are still under debate. In this work the adsorption of aminothiols on Au(111) surfaces has been studied by using surface IR and X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) as well as by density functional theory (DFT) modeling. Two aminothiols were used, cysteamine (CEA) and mercaptoundecylamine (MUAM), which contain two and eleven carbon atoms, respectively. By combining experimental and theoretical methods, it was possible to draw a molecular picture of the thiol–gold interface. The long‐chain aminothiol produced better ordered SAMs, but, interestingly, the XPS data showed different sulfur binding environments depending on the alkyl chain length; an additional peak at low binding energy was observed upon CEA adsorption, which indicates the presence of sulfur in a different environment. DFT modeling showed that the positions of the sulfur atoms in the SAMs on gold with similar unit cells [(2√3×2√3)R30°] depended on the length of the alkyl chain. Short‐chain alkylthiol SAMs were adsorbed more strongly than long‐chain thiol SAMs and were shown to induce surface reconstruction by extracting atoms from the surface, possibly forming adatom/vacancy combinations that lead to the additional XPS peak. In the case of short alkylthiols, the thiol–gold interface governs the layer, CEA adsorbs strongly, and the mechanism is closer to single‐molecule adsorption than self‐assembly, whereas for long chains, interactions between alkyl chains drive the system to self‐assembly, leading to a higher level of SAM organization and restricting the influence of the sulfur–gold interface.  相似文献

The development of high‐performance molecular electronics and nanotech applications requires deep understanding of atomic level structural, electronic, and magnetic properties of electrode/molecular interfaces. Recent electrochemical experiments on self‐assembled monolayers (SAMs) have identified highly practical means to generate nanoparticles and metal monolayers suspended above substrate surfaces through SAM metallizations. A rational basis why this process is even possible is not yet well‐understood. To clarify the initial stages of interface formation during SAM metallization, we used first‐principles spin‐polarized density functional theory (DFT) calculations to study Pd diffusion on top of 4‐mercaptopyridine (4MP) SAMs on Au(111). After distinguishing potential‐energy surfaces (PESs) for different spin configurations for transition metal atoms on the SAM, we find adatom diffusion is not possible over the clean 4MP–SAM surface. Pre‐adsorption of transition‐metal atoms, however, facilitates atomic diffusion that appears to explain multiple reports on experimentally observed island and monolayer formation on top of SAMs. Furthermore, these diffusions most likely occur by moving across low‐lying and intersecting PESs of different spin states, opening the possibility of magnetic control over these systems. Vertical diffusion processes were also investigated, and the electrolyte was found to play a key role in preventing metal permeation through the SAM to the substrate.  相似文献

We report a Monte Carlo simulation study of the self-assembly of 1,4-benzenedithiolate (BDT), tetrahydrofuran (THF), and their mixtures on a Au (111) surface. We use the grand canonical Monte Carlo method to obtain the equilibrium adsorption coverage. Canonical ensemble (NVT) simulation is then used to explore further the structural information of the equilibrated systems. Our results indicate that BDT molecules adsorb onto the Au (111) surface with one of the sulfur atoms bonded to Au atoms. THF molecules form clusters on the surface. For BDT-THF mixtures, BDT can selectively adsorb on Au (111) to form a monolayer, whereas the solvent THF molecules either float above BDT monolayer or occupy vacancies on the surface that are not covered by BDT molecules. BDT molecules adsorb on a Au (111) surface with an average tilt angle of about 18-35 degrees to the surface normal. The tilting angle decreases as the coverage increases. In addition, the BDT monolayer constitutes an ordered herringbone structure on the Au (111) surface, and the ordering pattern is insensitive to the BDT coverage. In comparison, the THF molecules exhibit amorphous structure on the Au surface. Interestingly, simulations indicate that the bonding behavior of BDT molecules on Au (111) is coverage-dependent. BDT bonds preferably on the Au top site when the surface coverage is low. As coverage increases, most BDT molecules bond on the bridge and fcc hollow sites.  相似文献

The interactions of Na+ and Au+ cations with an Au(111) surface in the presence and absence of water molecules were investigated using Au18 and Au22 cluster models and the MP2 method with a triple-zeta valence basis set. The interactions between Na+ ions and the Au(111) surface were found to be primarily electrostatic, contrary to the much stronger Au+-Au(111) interactions that were dominated by orbital contributions. The largest CP-corrected MP2 adsorption energies were -156.9 kJ/mol for Na+ and -478.7 kJ/mol for Au+. When hydrated, Na+ prefers to be completely surrounded by water molecules rather than adsorbed to the surface, whereas Au+ remains adsorbed to the surface as water molecules bond with each other and with the Au surface. CP correction did not change the relative adsorption energy trends of Na+ or Au+ ions, but it had an effect on the interaction energy trends of the hydrated cations because of the weak water-surface and water-water interactions.  相似文献

The mechanism of the electroreduction of peroxide on Bi-submonolayer-modified Au(111) surfaces is examined using surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) measurements along with detailed density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The spectroscopy shows the presence of Bi-OH and Bi-O species at potentials just positive of that where peroxide is reduced. These species are not present in solutions absent either peroxide or Bi. DFT calculations show that peroxide is unstable relative to Bi-OH when Bi is present in the (2 x 2) configuration on Au(111) known from previous work to be catalytically active. The spacing between Bi adatoms is such that peroxide association with two Bi cannot occur without O-O bond cleavage. The full Bi monolayer is catalytically inactive and exhibits none of the Bi-OH or Bi-O signals seen for the active surface. The calculations show that as the Bi coverage becomes greater and the Bi adatom spacing becomes smaller, peroxide can adsorb on Bi without O-O bond rupture. These results indicate an important role for M-OH species in peroxide electroreduction.

The self-assembled monolayer (SAM) structure of the tetrathiafulvalene-side half of the Stoddart-Heath type [2]rotaxane on Au(111) surface was investigated using molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. We find that the orientation of the cyclobis(paraquat-p-phenylene) (CBPQT) ring depends dramatically on the coverage, changing in order to obtain highly packed SAMs. The ring lies with its large hollow parallel to the surface at lower coverage (up to one CBPQT per 27 surface Au atoms with a footprint of 1.9 nm(2); 1/27) when free space is available around it, but as the coverage increases (up to one CBPQT per 12 surface Au atoms with a footprint of 0.9 nm(2); 1/12), it tilts completely around its axis and lies with its smaller side (paraquat or phenyl ring) parallel to the surface to accommodate the reduced area available. We find that the best packing densities correspond to one CBPQT per 12-18 surface Au atoms (1/18-1/12) with footprints in the range between 0.9 nm(2) and 1.3 nm(2).  相似文献

Self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) were formed by the spontaneous adsorption of octythiocyanate (OTC) on Au(111) using both solution and ambient-pressure vapor deposition methods at room temperature and 50 degrees C. The surface structures and adsorption characteristics of the OTC SAMs on Au(111) were characterized by scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The STM observation showed that OTC SAMs formed in solution at room temperature have unique surface structures including the formation of ordered and disordered domains, vacancy islands, and structural defects. Moreover, we revealed for the first time that the adsorption of OTC on Au(111) in solution at 50 degrees C led to the formation of SAMs containing small ordered domains, whereas the SAMs formed by vapor deposition at 50 degrees C had long-range ordered domains, which can be described as (radical3 x 2 radical19)R5 degrees structures. XPS measurements of the peaks in the S 2p and N 1s regions for the OTC SAMs showed that vapor deposition is the more effective method as compared to solution deposition for obtaining high-quality SAMs by adsorption of OTC on gold. The results obtained will be very useful in understanding the SAM formation of organic thiocyanates on gold surfaces.  相似文献

The adsorption of 4-mercaptopyridine on Au(111) from aqueous or ethanolic solutions is studied by different surface characterization techniques and density functional theory calculations (DFT) including van der Waals interactions. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and electrochemical data indicate that self-assembly from 4-mercaptopyridine-containing aqueous 0.1 M NaOH solutions for short immersion times (few minutes) results in a 4-mercaptopyridine (PyS) self-assembled monolayer (SAM) with surface coverage 0.2. Scanning tunneling microscopy images show an island-covered Au surface. The increase in the immersion time from minutes to hours results in a complete SAM degradation yielding adsorbed sulfur and a heavily pitted Au surface. Adsorbed sulfur is also the main product when the self-assembly process is made in ethanolic solutions irrespective of the immersion time. We demonstrate for the first time that a surface reaction is involved in PyS SAM decomposition in ethanol, a surface process not favored in water. DFT calculations suggest that the surface reaction takes place via disulfide formation driven by the higher stability of the S-Au(111) system. Other reactions that contribute to sulfidization are also detected and discussed.  相似文献

Surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) studies of electrode/solution interfaces are important for understanding electrochemical processes. However, revealing the nature of reactions at well-defined single crystal electrode surfaces, which are SERS-inactive, remains challenging. In this work, shell-isolated nanoparticle-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SHINERS) was used for the first time to study electrochemical adsorption and hydrogenation reactions at single crystal surfaces in nonaqueous solvents. A roughened Au surface was also studied for comparison. The experimental results show that the hydrogenation of adsorbed p-ethynylaniline (PEAN) on roughened Au electrode surfaces occurred at very negative potentials in methanol because of the catalytic effect of surface plasmon resonance (SPR). However, because “hot electrons” were blocked by the silica shell of Au@SiO2 nanoparticles and aprotic acetonitrile was an ineffective hydrogen source, surface reactions at Au(111) were inhibited in the systems studied. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations revealed that the PEAN triple bond opened, allowing adsorption in a flat configuration on the Au(111) surface via two carbon atoms. This work provides an advanced understanding of electrochemical interfacial processes at single crystal surfaces in nonaqueous systems.  相似文献

NO co-adsorption with X (X = Na, O, S, and Cl) on Au and Pd(111) surfaces is studied using density functional theory (DFT) calculations to get a deeper insight into the extraordinary sulfur enhanced adsorption on the Au surface. It is found that both electronegative and electropositive adatoms can enhance NO adsorption on Au(111). In Na + NO/Au(111), the strong electrostatic attraction between Na and NO dominates and stabilizes NO adsorption, though Na-induced surface negative charging weakens NO adsorption. In (O, S, Cl) + NO/Au, the electronegative atoms would induce a slight surface distortion and enhance NO adsorption accordingly. NO adsorption on Pd(111) is enhanced by Na, but weakened by electronegative species. We suggest that the unique features of noble metals, i.e., the narrow DOS at the Fermi level (E(F)) and the deep buried d-band center, should play an important role in the promotion of NO adsorption on their surface as the CO case.  相似文献

Multiple-angle-of-incidence polarization infrared reflection-absorption spectroscopy (MAI-PIRRAS) has been used to study the adsorption mode and structural properties of 6-Mercaptopurine (6MP) self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) on smooth silver surface. The in-plane vibrations of the 6MP SAMs show some enhancement compared with the spectrum of the solid powder of 6MP, while the out-of-plane vibrations are very weak. Assignments of the observed bands by DFT calculations show that both the thiol form and the tautomer of 6MP exist in the SAMs and adopt the S atom and the N7 or N1 atom anchoring the silver surface. In order to eliminate the influence of the angle of the incidence and obtain direct influence of the orientation of the 6MP to the spectral intensity, the adsorption intensity of the SAMs is multiplied by cos θ to obtain corrected spectra. The adsorption intensity attains to the maximum at 35–40° other than near the grazing angle. The characteristics of the spectra suggest that the SAMs of 6MP are arranged orderly in a parallel fashion with a dihedral angle of 35–40° between the ring plane and the silver surface.  相似文献

In this work, we have used the static molecular simulations combined with an interatomic potential derived from the embedded‐atom method to study the adsorption and hetero‐diffusion on the (111) surface of Cu, Ag, and Au adatoms by using LAMMPS code. The investigation is performed for six heterogeneous systems such as Ag/Au(111), Ag/Cu(111), Au/Ag(111), Au/Cu(111), Cu/Ag(111), and Cu/Au(111). First, we have investigated the relaxation trends and the bond lengths of the atoms in the systems. The calculation results show that, the top layer spacing between the first and second layers of the Au(111), Ag(111), and Cu(111) substrates is contracted. This contraction is found to be more important in the Au(111) substrate. On the other hand, the strong reduction of the binding length is found in Au/Cu(111) for the different adsorption sites. In addition, the binding, adsorption, and static activation energies for all studied systems were examined. The results indicated that the binding and adsorption energies reached their maximum values in the Au/Cu(111) and Au/Ag(111) systems, respectively. Moreover, the static activation barriers for hopping diffusion on the (111) surfaces are found to be low compared with those found in the (100) and (110) surfaces. Therefore, our calculations showed that the difference in energy between the hcp and fcc sites on the (111) surfaces is very small. Copyright © 2017 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

The interaction of oligophenylene ethynylene (OPE) on the (111) surface of a gold slab resembling a self-assembled monolayer (SAM) is investigated using ab initio density functional theory calculations. The authors performed a full optimization including all atoms in the OPE and in the slab to better understand OPE adsorption on the surface. It is found that OPE has two energetically favorable adsorption sites on the Au surface with relatively different molecular geometries: the nontop site adsorption greatly modifies the (111) surface structure; however, the extensive electron interactions enable a delocalized electron density distribution, implying an improved conductivity between OPE and Au, and the top site which is 0.9 eV higher in energy than the nontop and features weaker Au-S bonds. Interestingly the on top configuration shows a strong spin imbalance along the molecule and the nontop shows a small spin imbalance on the surface. This feature is of strong interest for the development of resonators for the detection of chemical and biological agents. They have also calculated the frequency spectrum of these SAMs, which yield deformations in the gold surface yielding peak frequency shifts specific to each absorption site.  相似文献
