The phase separation behavior of ternary blends of two homopolymers, PMMA and PS, and a block copolymer of styrene and methylmethacrylate, P(S-b-MMA), was studied. The homopolymers were of equal chain length and were kept at equal amounts. Two copolymers were used with blocks of equal length, which exceeded or equaled that of the homopolymer chains. Varied was the copolymer contentf. Films were cast from toluene, which is a nonselective solvent. The morphologies of the cast films were compared with the structure of the critical fluctuations in solution, which were calculated in mean field approximation. The axis of blend compositionsf can be divided into parts of dominating macrophase and microphase separation. Above a transition concentrationf o, all copolymer chains are found in phase interfaces. Belowf o, part of them form micelles within the homopolymer phases.  相似文献

In this work, ultrafast differential scanning calorimetry (UFDSC) is used to study the dynamics of phase separation. Taking poly(vinyl methyl ether)/polystyrene (PVME/PS) blend as the example, we firstly obtained the phase diagram that has lower critical solution temperature (LCST), together with the glass transition temperature (Tg) of the homogeneous blend with different composition. Then, the dynamics of the phase separation of the PVME/PS blend with a mass ratio of 7:3 was studied in the time range from milliseconds to hours, by the virtue of small time and spatial resolution that UFDSC offers. The time dependence of the glass transition temperature (Tg) of PVME‐rich phase, shows a distinct change when the annealing temperature (Ta) changes from below to above 385 K. This corresponds to the transition from the nucleation and growth (NG) mechanism to the spinodal decomposition (SD) mechanism, as was verified by morphological and rheometric investigations. For the SD mechanism, the temperature‐dependent composition evolution in PVME‐rich domain was found to follow the Williams–Landel–Ferry (WLF) laws. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. The random phase approximation has been used to extend the Leibler theory for the stability limit of a homogeneous melt of A–B diblock copolymers to examine the onset of microphase and macrophase separation in a variety of ABC block copolymer systems. The stability limit is located by the divergence of the collective structure factor of the melt. We introduce and analyze three models for ABC block copolymers: linear triblocks, random comb copolymers where a fixed number of A and B teeth are placed randomly along a C backbone, and statistical comb copolymers, with A or B teeth spaced regularly, but with sequences constructed using a two parameter Markov process. We compute order-disorder stability boundaries for the segregation strength parameter χABN at threshold as a function of χACN, χBCN, composition, and other model parameters, and compare the results for the three different architectural models. An interesting “reentrant order-disorder transition” is located in several model phase diagrams, and is associated with a peculiar situation in which more incompatibility causes less segregation. In the case of statistical combs, macrophase separation into two liquid phases can be favored over microphase separation. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. The effects of film thickness and composition ratio on the morphology evolution of polystyrene (PS)/poly(vinyl methyl ether) (PVME) blend thin films were investigated. Diverse morphology evolutions including droplet-matrix structure, hole emergence, bicontinuous structure formation, percolation-to-droplet transition could be observed under annealing in two-phase region, depending on film thickness and composition ratio. The mechanism for these morphology variations was related to the complex effects of phase separation, dewetting and preferential wetting. The comparison between the thickness of bottom PVME layer and the twice of gyration radius 2Rg(PVME) played a dominant role in morphology control. Only when the PS/PVME film had specific film thickness and compositional symmetry, phase separation and dewetting could happen in sequence.  相似文献

It is suggested that the non-locality of the entropy part of the interaction parameter in partially miscible blends can be measured directly by scattering experiments. The structure factor computed in the random phase approximation is compared with experiments on weakly crosslinked polystyrene (PS) polyvinylmethylether (PVME) blends. These polymers have significantly different monomer units to form ‘smooth’ (PVME) and ‘rough’ (PS) polymers. An excess scattering is observed and related to the non-locality. It is further shown that these effects are significant near the glass transition of the blend. In particular, the influence of the non-local mixing entropy on the single chain behaviour close to the onset of the microphase separation is studied quantitatively.  相似文献

In terms of the random phase approximation, a global analysis of the thermodynamic stability of solutions of multiblock copolymers (AnBm)k and (AnBm)kAn was performed. Phase diagrams for various parameters of the copolymer structure including the macrophase and microphase separation regions were obtained. Critical lines near which this approximation still holds and the microphase separation corresponds to the weak segregation mode were also constructed. The formation of ordered structures with a period of the order of a wavelength of visible light becomes possible under certain conditions. It was shown that the homogeneous state of solutions of multiblock copolymers in certain narrow ranges of values of the parameters breaks down through a simultaneous growth of fluctuations with substantially different wavelengths, a phenomenon which must lead to the appearance of structures ordered at two length scales. The width of such regions increases with an increase in the number of blocks k and a decrease in the degree of polymerization n + m of a block. The potential use of these multiblock-copolymer solutions as photonic crystals is discussed.  相似文献

The phase behaviors of comblike block copolymer A(m+1)B(m)/homopolymer A mixtures are studied by using the random phase approximation method and real-space self-consistent field theory. From the spinodals of macrophase separation and microphase separation, we can find that the number of graft and the length of the homopolymer A have great effects on the phase behavior of the blend. For a given composition of comblike block copolymer, increasing the number of graft does not change the macrophase separation spinodal curve but decreases the microphase separation region. The addition of a small quantity of long-chain homopolymer A increases the microphase separation of comblike block copolymer/homopolymer A mixture. However, the addition of short-chain homopolymer A will decrease the phase separation region of comblike block copolymer/homopolymer A mixture. It is also found that the microstructure formed by diblock copolymer is easier to be swelled by homopolymer than that formed by comblike block copolymer. This can be attributed to the architecture difference between the comblike block copolymer and linear block copolymer.  相似文献

Microphase separation and the resulting morphology of asymmetric diblock copolymers of poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL) in thin films have been investigated by atomic force microscopy. Copolymers consisted of a short block of PCL (Mn∼2500-4500 g/mole) and a longer second block of poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA), poly(styrene) (PS) or poly(cyclohexene oxide) (PCHO). Tendency for microphase separation above the glass transition temperature of the second block (PMMA, PS or PCHO) resulted in a pitted morphology on the surface of the thin films. This tendency was strongest for PMMA and weakest for PCHO. The presence of up to 54% PMMA homopolymer in PCL-PMMA block copolymer did not prevent the formation of such pitted morphology on the surface. The effect of the chemical structure of the second block and the possible orientations of the block copolymer molecules in thin films are discussed.  相似文献

We prepared two block copolymers 1 and 2 consisting of a third‐generation dendron with poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) peripheries and a linear polystyrene (PS) coil. The PS molecular weights were 2000 g/mol and 8000 g/mol for 1 and 2 , respectively. The differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) data indicated that neither of the block copolymers showed glass transition, implying that there was no microphase separation between the PEO and PS blocks. However, upon doping the block copolymers with lithium triflate (lithium concentration per ethylene oxide unit = 0.2), two distinct glass transitions were seen, corresponding to the salt‐doped PEO and PS blocks, respectively. The morphological analysis using small angle X‐ray scattering (SAXS) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) demonstrated that a hexagonal columnar morphology was induced in salt‐doped sample 1‐Li+ , whereas the other sample ( 2‐Li+ ) with a longer PS coil revealed a lamellar structure. In particular, in the SAXS data of 2‐Li+ , an abrupt reduction in the lamellar thickness was observed near the PS glass transition temperature (Tg), in contrast to the SAXS data for 1‐Li+ . This reduction implies that there is a lateral expansion of the molecular section in the lamellar structure, which can be interpreted by the conformational energy stabilization of the long PS coil above Tg. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The relationship between microphase structure and mechanical response of the binary blends consisting of polystyrene-block-polyisoprene-block-polystyrene copolymer and low molecular weight polystyrene has been investigated. Low molecular weight polystyrene was chosen to obtain uniformly solubilized nano-blends without macrophase separation. The specimens were solution-cast by adding different amounts of homo-polystyrene to acquire different microphase structures. Small angle X-ray scattering(SAXS), transmission electron microscopy(TEM) and atom force microscopy(AFM) have been used to study the microdomain and grain structure. It is observed that the structural changes in d-spacing and grain size on account of different amounts of polystyrene alter the mechanical behavior in both monotonic tensile and cyclic tests. The elastic and the Mullins effects are strongly sensitive to the changes in d-spacing and grain sizes. Moreover, the sample with bi-continuous structure shows the largest tensile strength and Mullins effect. In addition, the Mooneye-Rivlin phenomenological model was used to evaluate and explore the relationship between the polymer topological networks and the rubber elasticity of these styrenic nano-blends.  相似文献

Self-assembled structures in solvent-cast films of binary mixtures of poly(styrene-block-isoprene) (SI) and homo-polystyrenes (HS) were studied as a function of rs, the ratio of molecular weights of HS and polystyrene block (PS) in SI and of wHS, the weight fraction of HS. For rS<1 (a criterion for “wet brush”), HS tends to be solubilized into the microdomain of PS and to swell the PS chains, causing a change in microdomain morphology with long-range order. Spherical microdomains composed of polyisoprene block (PI) dispersed randomly in the matrix of HS and PS (“spherical micelles”) are formed at the limit of high wHS (wHS→1). For rS≳1 (a criterion for “dry brush”), HS tends either to be segregated from SI, forming a macrophase-separated morphology (at rS>>1), or to be solubilized into the PS microdomains without swelling PS or without a significant change of a degree of swelling with wHS, if any, (at rS≌1). In the latter case, HS does not significantly affect the lamellar domains of PI for the particular SI studied here, which by itself gives alternating lamellar microdomains of PS and PI, but increases the mean distance between them. AS wHS→1, the long-range spatial order of the PI lamellae is lost, while keeping their thicknesses constant and uniform, resulting in morphologies of lamellar, cylindrical, and spherical vesicles. The vesicular morphology was analyzed by small-angle X-ray scattering and transmission electron microscopy. At rS>>1 (still in the criterion of dry brush), SI and HS undergo macrophase separation, forming SI domains composed of alternating lamellae in the matrix of HS.  相似文献

By employing small-angle neutron scattering (SANS), we investigated the microstructures of, poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPA)-block-poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) (NE) in deuterated water D2O, as related to macroscopic behaviors of fluidity, turbidity and synerisis. SANS revealed following results: (i) microphase separation occurs at around above 17 °C in a temperature range of transparent sol below 30 °C. In the microdomain appeared in the transparent sol state, both block chains of PNIPA and PEG are swollen by water; (ii) for the NE solution of polymer concentration Wp > 3.5% (w/v), corresponding to opaque gel above 30 °C, a percolated structure, i.e., network-like domain is formed by NE as a result of macrophase separation due to dehydration of the PNIPA chains. As the temperature increases toward 40 °C, the network domain is squeezed along a direction parallel to the NE interface, which leads to increase of the interfacial thickness given by swollen PEG chains and to the macroscopic synerisis behavior.  相似文献

Trithiocarbonate group was introduced into the polystyrene-b-poly(ethylene oxide) (PS-b-PEO) block copolymers as the junction of the blocks through RAFT polymerization. Mixed PS and PEO brushes with a V-shape were prepared by anchoring the trithiocarbonate group on the planar gold substrate. The morphology of the V-shaped brushes was characterized by atomic force microscopy (AFM) and the surface composition responsive to solvent treatment was detected by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Different morphologies were observed for the V-shaped PS-b-PEO brushes, depending on the chain structure and solvent treatment. The highly selective solvent for PEO, ethanol, can intensify or induce microphase separation of the V-shaped brushes, leading to vertical microphase separation. When the V-shaped brushes are treated with the co-solvent, THF, miscible morphology, lateral microphase separation, and vertical microphase separation are observed as the PS block length increases. After treatment with the non-selective poor solvent, cyclohexane, the V-shaped PS(106)-b-PEO(113) brush, exhibits a laterally microphase-separated morphology, but the V-shaped PS(52)-b-PEO(113) and PS(253)-b-PEO(113) brushes are vertically microphase-separated.  相似文献

We have investigated the fluorescence emission spectra of pyrene and anthracene dyes covalently bonded to polystyrene (PS) upon phase separation from poly(vinyl methyl ether) (PVME). The specific chemical structure of the fluorescent labels is found to affect the measured phase separation temperature TS, with fluorophores covalently attached in closer proximity to the PS backbone identifying phase separation a few degrees earlier. The sharp increase in fluorescence intensity upon phase separation that occurs for all fluorophores with little change in spectral shape is consistent with a mechanism of static fluorescence quenching resulting from the specific interaction with a nearby quenching molecular unit. Based on recent work that has identified a weak hydrogen bond occurring between the aromatic hydrogens of PS and the ether oxygen of PVME, we believe a similar weak hydrogen bond is likely occurring between the PVME oxygen and the aromatic dyes providing a local (few nanometer) sensitivity to phase separation. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The concept of microphase separation was up to now widely applied mainly to the conformational transitions in block-copolymer solutions and melts. However, recently it became obvious that this concept has a much more general meaning. It was shown that microphase separation transition can be observed in random copolymers, interpenetrating polymer networks, polyelectrolyte mixtures, poor solvent polyelectrolyte solutions, ionomer solutions and melts, polymer blends and solutions with nonlocal entropy of mixing. In all these examples the emerging microdomain structures correspond to the nanometer scale, therefore the study of these effects can lead to the new ways of obtaining polymer materials with controlled nano-microstructure. In this presentation the review of our recent findings on microphase separation in some of the above-mentioned systems will be presented. 1. The problem of microphase separation in the systems containing weakly charged polyelectrolytes (polyelectrolyte mixtures and poor solvent polyelectrolyte solutions) will be considered. From the methodic point of view, it will be shown that this problem can be solved by direct minimization of the free energy, without the use of “weak segregation” or “strong segregation” assumptions which are common in the theory of block-copolymers. The final phase diagrams exhibit wide macroscopic phase separation regions, which is their main difference from the corresponding phase diagrams for block-copolymer systems. The formation of microdomains is thus coupled with macroscopic phase separation: in most of the cases microdomain structure is formed in one of the coexisting phases after macroscopic phase separation takes place [1] - [2]. 2. The formation of the multiplet structure in ionomer melts and solutions can be also considered as the microphase separation in the random copolymer system with the formation of the “micelles” (or clusters) of ionic links. The parallels with micelle formation in block-copolymer systems can be established if one considers a new “superstrong segregation regime” for block-copolymer microstructures. This regime can be indeed observed for diblock copolymers with one ionomeric and one neutral block [3]. 3. The microphase separation transition in ordinary polymer blends and solutions is also possible. The conditions for this effect are: (i) significant entropic contribution to polymer/polymer or polymer/solvent miscibility, (ii) the nonlocal character of this contribution with a high value of the nonlocality radius. It is argued that one can expect that the entropy nonlocality radius increases in the vicinity of the glass transition for the blend or polymer solutions (in the latter case solvent molecules act like “poor solvent plasticisers”). Computer simulation data supporting the theoretical prediction of microphase separation transition in these systems will be presented [4] - [5].  相似文献

We report on the phase behavior and microdomain structure of two types of diblock copolymers containing a liquid crystal (LC) block joined to a flexible coil block. Consideration of the symmetry groups of the liquid crystalline phases and of the block copolymer microdomain structures provides a rationale for predicting the possible types of liquid crystalline block copolymer morphologies. Both previously reported and newly discovered structural types are identified. Possible organizational schemes are developed for the mesogens and periodic disclination defects with respect to the intermaterial dividing surfaces separating the liquid crystalline and flexible coil domains. The first type of copolymer investigated has a rod-like LC block whereas the second type copolymer has a side chain LC block. Five different rod-coil diblocks based on poly(hexyl isocyanate-b-styrene) P(HIC-b-S) were synthesized by anionic polymerization. Wavy lamellae, zig-zag and arrowhead microdomain morphologies corresponding to smectic-C and smectic-O structures were observed depending on the composition. These layered phases have the director (PHIC chain axis) tilted at various orientations with respect to the layer normal. Side-chain LC diblocks based on functionalized poly(isoprene-b-styrene) P(I-b-S) were also investigated. These polymers were synthesized using polymer analogous chemistry from P(I-b-S) precursors. Three different mesogenic groups were attached to the PI blocks: one based on biphenyl benzoate and two based on azobenzene. The microdomain structures found for the functionalized poly(isoprene side-chain LC-b-styrene) P(ILC-b-S) diblocks are typical of traditional coil-coil diblocks (lamellae and cylinders). However, these morphologies possess an additional smectic layering of the mesogens within the microdomains of the LC block. In the case of the rod-coil diblocks, the transformation from an initially isotropic state to the final microphase separated solid state occurs via nematic and then smectic liquid crystalline states, whereas for the side-chain LC-coil cases, the microphase separation transition occurs prior to development of orientational order. The long-range microdomain order of LC block-coil block copolymers can extend over very large distances due to the influence of the orientational ordering of the LC block.  相似文献

In this contribution, we reported the synthesis of a hyperbranched block copolymer composed of poly(ε‐caprolactone) (PCL) and polystyrene (PS) subchains. Toward this end, we first synthesized an α‐alkynyl‐ and ω,ω′‐diazido‐terminated PCL‐b‐(PS)2 macromonomer via the combination of ring‐opening polymerization and atom transfer radical polymerization. By the use of this AB2 macromonomer, the hyperbranched block copolymer (h‐[PCL‐b‐(PS)2]) was synthesized via a copper‐catalyzed Huisgen 1,3‐dipolar cycloaddition (i.e., click reaction) polymerization. The hyperbranched block copolymer was characterized by means of 1H nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy and gel permeation chromatography. Both differential scanning calorimetry and atomic force microscopy showed that the hyperbranched block copolymer was microphase‐separated in bulk. While this hyperbranched block copolymer was incorporated into epoxy, the nanostructured thermosets were successfully obtained; the formation of the nanophases in epoxy followed reaction‐induced microphase separation mechanism as evidenced by atomic force microscopy, small angle X‐ray scattering, and dynamic mechanical thermal analysis. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Despite its wide occurrence in soft confined block co-polymers, breakout crystallization remains poorly understood and is difficult to control. In this work, thin films of cylinder-forming poly(butadiene)-block-poly(ε-caprolactone) (PB-b-PCL) diblock co-polymers, with PCL being the minority block, have been chosen as the study subject. We demonstrate a new route to study the breakout crystallization by obtaining the microphase separation structure within terraced lamellae first and then in situ tracking down the lamellar coalescence, resulting from the development of the crystal growth front. We find that the crystal growth front has sucked materials from the surrounding amorphous lamellae, which lead to the decrease of the lamellar zones and coalescence of the microphase separation structure. Dividing the breakout crystallization into parallel breakout and vertical breakout, we illustrate that it is the crystallization-driven molecular diffusion that make the molecules overcome the topography constraint and grow into large-scale spherulite. Moreover, the results show that the polymer microphase separation structure has a significant influence on the crystal nucleation and greatly retarded the crystal growth rate. With a well-designed microphase separation structure within terraces and an easily tunable atomic force microscopy in situ imaging technique, an intensive study of the breakout crystallization and concomitant microdomain coalescence has been offered.  相似文献

We recently presented electron spin resonance spectra of poly(acrylonitrile–butadiene–styrene) (ABS) doped with 10‐doxylnonadecane (10DND) and 5‐doxyldecane (5DD) as spin probes. The spectra were measured in three types of ABS that differed in their butadiene contents and methods of preparation. Results for the ABS polymers were evaluated by comparison with similar studies on the homopolymers polybutadiene (PB) and polystyrene (PS) and the copolymers poly(styrene‐co‐acrylonitrile) (SAN) and poly(styrene‐co‐butadiene) (SB). Only one spectral component was detected for 10DND in PB, PS, SAN, and SB. In contrast, two spectral components differing in their dynamic properties were detected in the ABS samples and were assigned to spin probes located in butadiene‐rich domains (the fast component) and SAN‐rich domains (the slow component). The presence of two spectral components was taken as an indication of microphase separation. In this study, we present details on the dynamics and microphase separation by simulating spectra of 10DND in ABS, PB, PS, and SAN. The simulations are based on a dynamic model defined by the components of the rotational diffusion tensor and the diffusion tilt angle between the symmetry axis of the rotational diffusion tensor and the direction of the nitrogen 2pz atomic orbital. The jump diffusion model led to good agreement with experimental spectra. In this model, the spin probe has a fixed orientation for a given time and then jumps instantaneously to a new orientation. The temperature variation of the rotational correlation time in PB and PS consisted of two dynamic regimes, with different activation energies. The transition temperature at which the change in dynamics occurs (Ttr) is 380 K for PS and 205 K for PB, essentially the same as the corresponding glass‐transition temperatures measured by differential scanning calorimetry. We suggest that Ttr is a better indicator of the glass transition than the temperature at which the total spectral width is 50 G, especially for large probes. The simulation program allowed the determination of the relative intensities of the fast and slow spectral components as a function of temperature; this information was used to clarify the redistribution of the probe above the glass transition of the SAN‐rich component in ABS systems. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Anisotropic phase separation of polystyrene/poly(vinyl methyl ether) (PS/PVME) blends was induced by photoisomerization of trans-stilbene moieties labeled on the PS chains (abbreviated hereafter as PSS chains) using linearly polarized light. As temperature increases, the anisotropy becomes weaker and eventually disappears at 10°C above the glass transition of the PSS component. It was concluded that the elastic stress associated with the spatial distribution of the reaction is responsible for this morphological anisotropy.  相似文献
