Three block copolymers of poly(ethylene succinate) and poly(tetramethylene glycol) with about 20, 54, and 59 mol% polyether have been prepared and subjected to hydrolytic degradation at 37°C. The sample containing 59 mol% showed drastic changes in the properties after 3 months of degradation, whereas the other samples exhibited only minor changes. The tensile strength was completely lost, the molecular weight had decreased to 7% of the original value, and the crystallinity (measured as heat of fusion) had more than doubled. IR and 1H-NMR analyses showed that the rates of release of the different polymeric blocks varied throughout the period of hydrolytic degradation. Fibers of the block copolymer poly(ethylene succinate)/poly(tetramethylene glycol) with poly(tetramethylene glycol) fractions ranging from 20 to 50 mol% have been analyzed by 13 C NMR to determine the molecular weights of the PES blocks and by reflection IR, ESCA, and SEM to investigate the surface composition. The molecular weights of the polyester blocks were inversely proportional to the mol% of polyether, and the values were in agreement with theoretical calculated values. The surface concentration of the polyether was found to be higher than that in the bulk and also independent of the mol% polyether in the range of study. A degradation mechanism is proposed which involves a combined effect of surface erosion and hydrolytic attack on the ester linkages connecting the amorphous polyether and the crystalline polyester blocks.  相似文献

Well-defined amphiphilic seven-arm star triblock copolymers containing hydrophobic crystalline poly(ε-caprolactone)(PCL) blocks, hydrophobic non-crystalline poly(tert-butyl acrylate)(PtBA) blocks and hydrophilic poly(ethylene glycol)(PEG) blocks were precisely synthesized by a combination of ring-opening polymerization(ROP), atom transfer radical polymerization(ATRP) and “click” reaction. Such star copolymers could self-assemble into “core-shell-corona” micelles and “multi-layer” vesicles depending on the fraction of each block. Meanwhile, the selective hydrolysis of middle PtBA blocks into the poly(acrylic acid)(PAA) blocks allowed the star block copolymers to further change their morphologies of aqueous aggregates in response to pH values.  相似文献

A series of amphiphilic temperature‐responsive star‐shaped poly(D,L‐lactic‐co‐glycolic acid)‐b‐methoxy poly(ethylene glycol) (PLGA‐mPEG) block copolymers with different arm numbers were synthesized via the arm‐first method. Gel permeation chromatography data confirmed that star‐shaped PLGA‐mPEG copolymers had narrow polydispersity index, indicating the successful formation of star‐shaped block copolymers. Indirectly, the 1H NMR spectra in two kinds of solvents and dye solubilization method had confirmed the formation of core‐shell micelles. Further, core‐shell micelles with sizes of about 30–50 nm were directly observed by transmission electron microscopy. Subsequently, the micellar sizes and distributions as a function of concentrations and temperature were measured. At various copolymer concentrations, individual micelles with size of 20–40 nm and grouped micelles with size of 600–700 nm were found. Micellar mechanism of star‐shaped block copolymers in aqueous solution was simultaneously discussed. In addition, sol–gel transition of star‐shaped block copolymers in water was also investigated via the inverting test method. The critical gel temperature (CGT) and critical gel concentration (CGC) values of two‐arm, three‐arm and four‐arm copolymer solutions were markedly higher than ones of one‐arm copolymer. Moreover, the same CGC values of copolymer solution with different molecular weight and the same arm composition were ~15 wt %, and CGT values increased from ~38 to ~47°C with increasing arm numbers. Finally, the temperature‐dependent micellar packing gelation mechanism of star‐shaped block copolymer was schematically illustrated. Copyright © 2013 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

This study investigated the effect of molecular architecture of amphiphilic star polymers on micelle formation and drug loading and releasing. For this, multi-armed star block copolymers having poly(ethylene glycol) as a hydrophilic block and poly(ε-caprolactone) as a hydrophobic block were synthesized by using a divergent synthetic method consisting of a coupling reaction and a ring opening polymerization. The molecular weight and molecular weight distribution of the block copolymers were characterized by 1H NMR and GPC measurements. Dynamic light scattering and fluorescence spectroscopic analysis were employed to observe micellization, drug loading, and drug release behaviors. We have figured out that the number of arms is a critical factor that changes critical micelle concentration as well as drug loading and releasing behaviors; increase in the number of arms not only led to lowering the critical micelle concentration and drug release rate but also increased the micelle size and drug loading efficiency.  相似文献

The synthesis of multiarm star block (and mixed‐block) copolymers are efficiently prepared by using Cu(I) catalyzed azide‐alkyne click reaction and the arm‐first approach. α‐Silyl protected alkyne polystyrene (α‐silyl‐alkyne‐PS) was prepared by ATRP of styrene (St) and used as macroinitiator in a crosslinking reaction with divinyl benzene to successfully give multiarm star homopolymer with alkyne periphery. Linear azide end‐functionalized poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG‐N3) and poly (tert‐butyl acrylate) (PtBA‐N3) were simply clicked with the multiarm star polymer described earlier to form star block or mixed‐block copolymers in N,N‐dimethyl formamide at room temperature for 24 h. Obtained multiarm star block and mixed‐block copolymers were identified by using 1H NMR, GPC, triple detection‐GPC, atomic force microscopy, and dynamic light scattering measurements. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Star-shaped block copolymers consisting of non-toxic poly(ethylene glycol) and biodegradable polycaprolactone ((PEG5K-PCL)4) were synthesized by ring-opening polymerization of the ε-caprolactone monomer with hydroxyl-terminated 4-armed PEG as initiator. These biodegradable, amphiphilic star block copolymers showed micellization and sol-gel transition behaviors in aqueous solution with varying concentration and temperature. In the dilute aqueous solutions of star block copolymers, micellization behavior occurred over specific concentration. The 1,6-diphenyl-1,3,5-hexatriene (DPH) solubilization method was used to determine the critical micellization concentration (CMC) of star block copolymers. The obtained micelle size increased with increasing hydrophobic PCL block length. In high-concentration solutions, the star block copolymers showed temperature-sensitive sol-gel transition behavior. The morphology of the micelle and gel was investigated by atomic force microscopy (AFM). As a result, the micelles showed a core-corona spherical structure at concentration near CMC, while the gel showed a mountain-chain-like morphology picture. It was proposed that with increasing the micelle concentration the worm-like micelle clusters formed firstly and the gel was constructed by the packing of micelle clusters.  相似文献

Biodegradable, amphiphilic, diblock poly(ε‐caprolactone)‐block‐poly(ethylene glycol) (PCL‐b‐PEG), triblock poly(ε‐caprolactone)‐block‐poly(ethylene glycol)‐block‐poly(ε‐caprolactone) (PCL‐b‐PEG‐b‐PCL), and star shaped copolymers were synthesized by ring opening polymerization of ε‐caprolactone in the presence of poly(ethylene glycol) methyl ether or poly(ethylene glycol) or star poly(ethylene glycol) and potassium hexamethyldisilazide as a catalyst. Polymerizations were carried out in toluene at room temperature to yield monomodal polymers of controlled molecular weight. The chemical structure of the copolymers was investigated by 1H and 13C NMR. The formation of block copolymers was confirmed by 13C NMR and DSC investigations. The effects of copolymer composition and molecular structure on the physical properties were investigated by GPC and DSC. For the same PCL chain length, the materials obtained in the case of linear copolymers are viscous whereas in the case of star copolymer solid materials are obtained with low Tg and Tm temperatures. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Abstract

Block copolymers composed of a polyether, such as poly(oxytetra-methylene), and vinyl polymers, such as polystyrene, poly(methyl methacrylate), poly(butyl acrylate), and poly(vinyl acetate), were prepared by photopolymerizations of vinyl monomers initiated with a polyether macroiniferter, α - (diethyldithiocarbamylacetyl) - ω - (diethyldithiocar-bamylacetoxy)-poly(oxytetramethylene). ESR spectroscopy and end-group analysis of diethyldithiocarbamyl indicated that block copolymers should be predominantly ABA-type copolymers. The block copolymers were characterized in detail by NMR, GPC, and DSC analysis.  相似文献

(AB)f star block copolymers were synthesized by the radical polymerization of a poly(t‐butyl acrylate)‐block‐poly(methyl methacrylate) diblock macroinitiator with ethylene glycol dimethacrylate in methanol under UV irradiation. Diblock macroinitiators were prepared by diethyldithiocarbamate‐mediated sequential living radical copolymerization initiated by (4‐cyano‐4‐diethyldithiocarbamyl)pentanoic acid under UV irradiation. The arm number (f) was controlled by the variation of the initial concentration of the diblock initiator. It was found from light scattering data that such star block copolymers (f ≥ 344) not only took a spherical shape but also formed a single molecule in solution. Subsequently, we derived amphiphilic [arm: poly(acrylic acid)‐block‐poly(methyl methacrylate)] star block copolymers by the hydrolysis of poly(t‐butyl acrylate) blocks. These amphiphilic star block copolymers were soluble in water because the external blocks were composed of hydrophilic poly(acrylic acid) chains. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Linear, star, and block copolymers based on poly(vinyl pyrrolidone) (PVP) were synthesized with the macromolecular design via the interchange of xanthates (MADIX) process for use as potential stabilizers in suspension polymerization. The design of the leaving group of the dithioxanthate‐based transfer agent was shown to be key to the successful preparation of well‐defined PVP architectures. A linear correlation of the monomer conversion and molecular weight was found in the synthesis of star polymers, whereas the molecular weight distribution remained narrow (polydispersity index < 1.3). Significant side reactions, which typically broaden the molecular weight distribution when R‐designed MADIX agents are used, were absent. The living behavior of the PVP polymerization was furthermore confirmed via chain extension with vinyl acetate, which resulted in the formation of PVP–PVAc block copolymers [where PVAc is poly(vinyl acetate)]. The prepared polymers were used as stabilizers in suspension polymerization to prepare crosslinked poly(vinyl neodecanoate)/ethylene glycol dimethacrylate microspheres. The ratio of the interfacial tension of the aqueous and monomer phases and the overall viscosity were found to have an effect on the diameter of the particles, with PVP star polymers as stabilizers resulting in smaller particles. A smaller interfacial tension, measured when star polymers and block copolymers were used, resulted in the appearance of smaller particles, probably because of more breakup events of the monomer droplets and the enhanced stabilization of the particle surface area. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Biodegradable star‐shaped poly(ethylene glycol)‐block‐poly(lactide) copolymers were synthesized by ring‐opening polymerization of lactide, using star poly(ethylene glycol) as an initiator and potassium hexamethyldisilazide as a catalyst. Polymerizations were carried out in toluene at room temperature. Two series of three‐ and four‐armed PEG‐PLA copolymers were synthesized and characterized by gel permeation chromatography (GPC) as well as 1H and 13C NMR spectroscopy. The polymerization under the used conditions is very fast, yielding copolymers of controlled molecular weight and tailored molecular architecture. The chemical structure of the copolymers investigated by 1H and 13C NMR indicates the formation of block copolymers. The monomodal profile of molecular weight distribution by GPC provided further evidence of controlled and defined star‐shaped copolymers as well as the absence of cyclic oligomeric species. The effects of copolymer composition and lactide stereochemistry on the physical properties were investigated by GPC and differential scanning calorimetry. For the same PLA chain length, the materials obtained in the case of linear copolymers are more viscous, whereas in the case of star copolymer, solid materials are obtained with reduction in their Tg and Tm temperatures. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Our previous studies have shown that stereocomplexed hydrogels can be rapidly formed in vitro as well as in vivo upon mixing aqueous solutions of eight-arm poly(ethylene glycol)-poly(l-lactide) (PEG-PLLA) and poly(ethylene glycol)-poly(d-lactide) (PEG-PDLA) star block copolymers. In this study, stereocomplexation and photopolymerization are combined to yield rapidly in situ forming robust hydrogels. Two types of methacrylate-functionalized PEG-PLLA and PEG-PDLA star block copolymers, PEG-PLLA-MA and PEG-PDLA-MA, which have methacrylate groups at the PLA chain ends and PEG-MA/PLLA and PEG-MA/PDLA, which have methacrylate groups at the PEG chain ends, were designed and prepared. Results showed that stereocomplexed hydrogels could be rapidly formed (within 1-2 min) in a polymer concentration range of 12.5-17.5% (w/v), in which the methacrylate group hardly interfered with the stereocomplexation. When subsequently photopolymerized, these hydrogels showed largely increased storage moduli as compared to the corresponding hydrogels that were cross-linked by stereocomplexation or photopolymerization only. Interestingly, the storage modulus of stereocomplexed-photopolymerized PEG-PLA-MA hydrogels increased linearly with increasing stereocomplexation equilibration time prior to photopolymerization (from ca. 6 to 32 kPa), indicating that stereocomplexation aids in photopolymerization. Importantly, photopolymerization of stereocomplexed hydrogels could take place at very low initiator concentrations (0.003 wt %). Swelling/degradation studies showed that combining stereocomplexation and photopolymerization yielded hydrogels with prolonged degradation times as compared to corresponding hydrogels cross-linked by photopolymerization only (3 vs 1.5 weeks). Stereocomplexed-photopolymerized PEG-MA/PLA hydrogels degraded much slower than corresponding PEG-PLA-MA hydrogels, with degradation times ranging from 7 to more than 16 weeks. Therefore, combining stereocomplexation and photopolymerization is a novel approach to obtain rapidly in situ forming robust hydrogels.  相似文献

Four different types of polydepsipeptide‐polyether block copolymers were synthesized via ring‐opening polymerization of 3(S)‐sec‐butylmorpholine‐2,5‐dione (BMD) in the presence of hydroxytelechelic poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) with stannous octoate as a catalyst. The polymers were an AB block copolymer, an ABA block copolymer, an (A)2B star shaped copolymer and an (A)2B(A)2 copolymer, where A is a poly[3(S)‐sec‐butylmorpholine‐2,5‐dione] (PBMD) and B a poly(ethylene oxide) block. The molar ratio of BMD to PEO was varied to obtain copolymers with different weight fractions of PBMD blocks ranging from 59.8 to 96.7 wt.‐%. The crystallinity of the PEO phase in the copolymers decreases in the following order: AB > (A)2B > ABA > (A)2B(A)2 . The static contact angle θ decreases with increasing PEO content in the block copolymers.  相似文献

ABA‐type triblock copolymers and AB‐type star diblock copolymers with poly(2‐adamantyl vinyl ether) [poly(2‐AdVE)] hard outer segments and poly(n‐butyl vinyl ether) [poly(NBVE)] soft inner segments were synthesized by sequential living cationic copolymerization. Although both the two polymer segments were composed solely of poly(vinyl ether) backbones and hydrocarbon side chains, they were segregated into microphase‐separated structure, so that the block copolymers formed thermoplastic elastomers. Both the ABA‐type triblock copolymers and the AB‐type star diblock copolymers exhibited rubber elasticity over wide temperature range. For example, the ABA‐type triblock copolymers showed rubber elasticity from about ?53 °C to about 165 °C and the AB‐type star diblock copolymer did from about ?47 °C to 183 °C with a similar composition of poly(2‐AdVE) and poly(NBVE) segments in the dynamic mechanical analysis. The AB‐type star diblock copolymers exhibited higher tensile strength and elongation at break than the ABA‐type triblock copolymers. The thermal decomposition temperatures of both the block copolymers were as high as 321–331 °C, indicating their high thermal stability. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In this article, we describe the synthesis of PEG‐b‐polyester star block copolymers via ring‐opening polymerization (ROP) of ester monomers initiated at the hydroxyl end group of the core poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) using HCl Et2O as a monomer activator. The ROP of ε‐caprolactone (CL), trimethylene carbonate (TMC), or 1,4‐dioxan‐2‐one (DO) was performed to synthesize PEG‐b‐polyester star block copolymers with one, two, four, and eight arms. The PEG‐b‐polyester star block copolymers were obtained in quantitative yield, had molecular weights close to the theoretical values calculated from the molar ratio of ester monomers to PEG, and exhibited monomodal GPC curves. The crystallinity of the PEG‐b‐polyester star block copolymers was determined by differential scanning calorimetry and X‐ray diffraction. Copolymers with a higher arm number had a higher tendency toward crystallization. The crystallinity of the PEG‐b‐polyester star block copolymers also depended on the nature of the polyester block. The CMCs of the PEG‐b‐PCL star block copolymers, determined from fluorescence measurements, increased with increasing arm number. The CMCs of the four‐arm star block copolymers with different polyester segments increased in the order 4a‐PEG‐b‐PCL < 4a‐PEG‐b‐PDO < 4a‐PEG‐b‐PLGA < 4a‐PEG‐b‐PTMC, suggesting a relationship between CMC and star block copolymer crystallinity. The partition equilibrium constant, Kv, which is an indicator of the hydrophobicity of the micelles of the PEG‐polyester star block copolymers in aqueous media, increased with decreasing arm number and increasing crystallinity. A key aspect of the present work is that we successfully prepared PEG‐b‐polyester star block copolymers by a metal‐free method. Thus, unlike copolymers synthesized by ROP using a metal as the monomer activator, our copolymers do not contain traces of metals and hence are more suitable for biomedical applications. Moreover, we confirmed that the PEG‐b‐polyester star block copolymers form micelles and hence may be potential hydrophobic drug delivery vehicles. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The synthesis and characterisation of segmented block copolymers based on mixtures of hydrophilic poly(ethylene oxide) and hydrophobic poly(tetramethylene oxide) polyether segments and monodisperse crystallisable bisester tetra-amide segments are reported. The PEO length was varied from 600 to 8000 g/mol and the PTMO length was varied from 650 to 2900 g/mol. The influence of the polyether phase composition on the thermal mechanical and the elastic properties of the resulting copolymers was studied. The use of high melting monodisperse tetra-amide segments resulted in a fast and almost complete crystallisation of the rigid segment. The copolymers had only one polyether glass transition temperature, which suggests that the amorphous polyether segments were homogenously mixed. Thermal analysis of the copolymers showed one polyether melting temperature that was lower than in the case of ideal co-crystallisation between the two polyether segments. However, at PEO or PTMO lengths larger than 2000 g/mol two polyether melting temperatures were observed. The copolymer with the best low temperature properties was based on a mixture of PEO and PTMO segments, both having a molecular weight of 1000 g/mol, at a weight ratio of 30/70.  相似文献

We report on the synthesis and self-assembly of amphiphilic mikto-arm star copolymers of the AxBy type with mixed arms of poly(lauryl methacrylate) and poly(oligo ethylene glycol methacrylate). Two star copolymers with different hydrophobic-to-hydrophilic ratios are prepared in order to study their self-assembly in aqueous media. Both stars organize in structures with dimensions in the nanoscale. The star with the lower hydrophobic content forms aggregates of lower size and molar mass and it has a higher critical aggregation concentration. The synthesized mikto-arm stars are able to encapsulate curcumin (CUR) and preserve its fluorescence properties while their self-organization is affected by the incorporation of the hydrophobic drug compound. Interestingly, the more hydrophilic star is more strongly affected by the presence of CUR in terms of aggregate size and mass. In phosphate buffered saline (PBS) and fetal bovine serum-PBS solutions the star with higher hydrophobic content appears to better preserve its monomodal size distribution in comparison to the star with lower hydrophobic content either with or without encapsulated CUR. This work opens possibilities for using the new star copolymers in the solubilization of hydrophobic compounds and the delivery of hydrophobic drugs for pharmaceutical and bioimaging applications.  相似文献

Water soluble nonionic amphiphilic block copolymers based on hydrophilic poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) and hydrophobic poly(propylene glycol) (PPG) were prepared. Poly(ethylene glycol)-block-poly(propylene glycol)-block-poly(ethylene glycol) copolymers, PEG-PPG-PEG, were prepared in the normal condition. The chemical composition and molecular weights of the prepared copolymers were determined from 1H NMR and GPC techniques. The surface properties of the prepared surfactants were determined by measuring the surface tension at different temperatures. The prepared nonionic surfactants were evaluated as demulsifiers for water in crude-oil emulsions that were pronounced at different ratios of crude oil: water at 318 K and 333 K. The experimental results showed that the dehydration rate of the prepared demulsifiers reached 100% based on demulsifier chemical compositions and concentrations.  相似文献
