The counterion binding behaviour of micelles of sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS) and several bile salts in the pure state have been studied, as well as in mutually mixed states, and in a mixed state with polyoxyethylene sorbitan monolaurate (PSML) as a nonionic surfactant. Electrochemical measurements have shown no counterion binding by the pure bile salt micelles and their mixtures with PSML; they can bind counterions when mixed with SDS, whereas the surfactant anions of SDS micelles bind counterions in the pure state and/or in mixed states with PSML. In the SDS-PSML and SDS-bile salts combinations, the counterion association is decreased by the increased proportions of the second component. The extent of counterion binding by the different systems is presented.  相似文献

Two ternary phase diagrams of the cationic perfluorosurfactant diethanolheptadecafluoro-2-undecanolmethylammonium chloride (DEFUMAC) with an anionic perfluorosurfactant lithium perfluorooctanesulfonate (LiFOS) and an anionic hydrocarbon surfactant lithium dodecyl sulfate (LiDS) have been established at 25°C. The total surfactant concentration was less than 20wt%. In a wide mixing region of the LiFOS/DEFUMAC system, a lamellar-type phase,P , was identified by its texture under a polarization microscope and by its x-ray diffraction pattern. Dispersed fragments ofP -phase are present in the dilute solutions in which one surfactant was in excess. The anisotropy of electrical conductivity, flow birefringence, dynamic light scattering, and electric briefringence demonstrate that theP fragments are disk-like with a radius of 0.7 m. The disk-likeP particles are transformed by shear into a spherical aggregate ofL above a critical shear gradient. LiDS/DEFUMAC mixed solution forms dispersed and precipitatedL in the dominant region. Radius and micropolarity of the dispersedL aggregates are decreased as the ratio of LiDS:DEFUMAC approaches 1:1. On the basis of x-ray diffraction measurement the structure of precipitatedL -phase seems to consist of monolayers.  相似文献

The association of counter-ions with mixed ionic/nonionic micelles has been investigated in the case of dodecyl/tetradecyl/ and hexadecyl-trimethylammonium bromide with two nonionic surfactants: dodecylpolyoxyethylene 23 and Triton X-100. The degree of association has been measured by potentiometry using a Bromide ion-selective electrode. Previous results with sodium and copper dodecylsulfate suggesting that in the nonionic-rich composition domain, bare mixed micelles are formed without associated counter-ions have been confirmed. These results are in agreement with the prediction of Bjerrum's condition for ion association. The effect of copper dodecylsulfate on the cloud point of Triton X-100 has also been determined as a means of investigating mixed micelles with multivalent counter-ions. The dramatic cloud point increase observed, even larger than with sodium dodecylsulfate, has been discussed as evidence of the solvation of divalent ions by ether groups, a factor which complicates the analysis of multivalent counterion condensation on mixed micelles.  相似文献

The complex formation of Ca++ with murexide was investigated spectrophotometrically. In the presence of surfactants, such measurements can be used to determine the extent of binding of Ca++ to the micelles. Experiments with secondary alkane sulphonate showed that there is competition between Na+ and Ca++ for the micelles. Aqueous salt solutions of ionic surfactants in both spherical and rod-like micelles have been treated on the basis of a statistical thermodynamic theory, and the double logarithmic relationship between micelle molecular weight and ionic strength is derived for each micelle. Counterion binding on both micelles are assumed to occur specifically, and their degrees of dissociation are related to the slopes of the linear double logarithmic relations. It is found from the relationship observed for typical surfactants that the effective charge of spherical micelles is 29±4. The degree of dissociation of rod-like micelles of these surfactants is primarily determined by the counterion species, yielding values 0.8 for Na+, 0.4–0.6 for Cl and 0.2–0.3 for Br. Hydrophilic hydration of both micelles can be evaluated from the intercepts of the linear relations. Hydrophilic hydration acts repulsively in spherical micelles, while it is attractive or much less repulsive in rod-like micelles.  相似文献

Some cationic surfactants such as cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) show a very spectacular viscoelasticity in solution, in even very diluted states, with some aromatic substances added, such as salicylic acid. Formerly, the authors established that the remarkable solution behaviour was the result of the entanglement of such enormously elongated giant micelles, based on recognition of the existence of large aggregates, through direct observation of them as substantial images under the electron microscope.In this report, we further confirm the relation between micelle length and solution viscoelasticity after arbitrarily obtaining different size aggregates by altering the media pH, or by admixing shorter chain length surfactants than CTAB, which alone did not induce viscoelasticity.  相似文献

The binding of sodium dodecyl sulfate and a hydrophilic color coupler anion to gelatin was investigated using a surfactant-selective electrode. The binding isotherms of the surfactants to an alkali-processed bone gelatin, as well as an acid-processed bone gelatin were determined and compared with viscosity data.The comparison shows that viscosity measurements can only be regarded as circumstantial evidence for binding. At nearly identical binding isotherms the viscosity curves were found to be very different.  相似文献

A flexibility parameter, the persistence length, has been evaluated from the radii of gyration and the contour lengths for rodlike micelles of heptaoxyethylene alkyl ethers (C n E7,n=12, 14, 16) and tetradecyldimethylammonium chloride (C14DAC) and bromide (C14DAB) at the observed crossover concentrations between dilute and semidilute regimes. The persistence length range is 43–73 nm, except for C12E7, for which it is 32 nm. The crossover concentrations between dilute and semidilute regimes for the semiflexible rodlike micelles calculated according to Ying and Chu as a function of the molecular weight, the contour length, and the persistence length are consistent with the observed values. The crossover concentration between semidilute and concentrated regimes was, on the other hand, calculated by using the same micelle parameters, including the value of thickness of cross-section of the rodlike micelles. The obtained values are at variance with the observed values. This means that rodlike micelles in semidilute and concentrated solutions might differ in size and/or flexibility from those in dilute solution.  相似文献

The behaviour of two types of drag reducing surfactant solutions was studied in turbulent flows in pipes of different diameters. Our surfactant systems contained rod-like micelles; they consisted of equimolar mixtures ofn-tetradecyltrimethylammonium bromide,n-hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide, and sodium salicylate. The structure of the turbulence was studied using a laser-Doppler anemometer in a 50 mm pipe. In the turbulent flow regime both surfactant solutions exhibited characteristic flow regimes. These flow regimes can be influenced by changing the amount of excess salt, the surfactant concentration, or the temperature. Shear viscosity measurements in laminar pipe and Couette flows show the occurrence of the so-called shear-induced state, where the viscosity increases and the surfactant solution becomes viscoelastic. The shape of the turbulent velocity profile depends on the flow regime. In the turbulent flow regime at low Reynolds numbers, velocity profiles similar to those observed for dilute polymer solutions are found, whereas at maximum drag reduction conditions more S-shaped profiles that show deviations from a logarithmic profile occur. An attempt is made to explain the drag reduction by rod-like micelles by combining the results of the rheological and the turbulence structure measurements.  相似文献

Low-temperature electron microscopy was used to image fracture faces of shock-frozen aqueous solutions containing the very large micelles of CTAB existing in the presence of N-methyl-N,N-diphenylamine (MDPA) and 9-anthracene carboxylic acid (9-AC) as solubilizates. When MDPA is present, large globular micelles are formed which have total aggregation numbers of the order of 105 and are seen to be clusters of smaller disc-like structures containing some thousand CTAB-units. Thread-like features are visualized in solutions containing 9-AC which is known to induce the formation of micellar rods.  相似文献

A surfactant-selective eletrode in which the membrane is an o-nitrotoluene phase containing a dissolved complex of cetyltrimethylammonium-dodecyl sulfate has been applied to investigations of the interaction between gelatin and alkyl sulfates as well as gelatin and alkyltrimethylammoniumions in dilute aqueous solutions.The binding isotherms were obtained by comparing emf-values obtained for surfactant in water to the electrode potentials in gelatin solutions plotted in terms of surfactant concentration.The binding of alkyl sulfates was measured as a function of pH at constant free surfactant concentration. At pH values 7 the degree of binding is indpendent of the pH of the solution. The level of binding of alkyl sulfates to gelatin increases strongly with increasing chain length of the alkyl sulfate. At pH values 6 the extent of binding increases steeply with decreasing pH. Octyl sulfate shows a very low level of binding even at low pH. Cationics show much weaker interactions with gelatin than anionic surfactants of comparable alkyl chain length.  相似文献

Interactions of the mixed surfactant solution of dodecylamido propyl dimethyl aminoacetate and sodium dodecyl sulfate with the liposomal membrane were studied. Lytic activities of the surfactants were measured as a function of the concentrations of surfactant and phospholipid and the composition of mixed surfactants. The solubilization limits of phospholipid by surfactants were determined from the change of their aggregation behavior in suspensions at equilibrium by means of quasi-elastic light scattering. The mixed surfactant solutions showed lower lytic activity than single component surfactant solution in spite of the strong adsorption onto the liposome surface. This was attributed to low solubilization power of binary mixture for phospholipid.  相似文献

The solubilization behavior of oleyl alcohol by pure and mixtures of surfactants systems have been studied in terms of the maximum additive concentration (MAC), the solubilizing power, and the particle sizes of micelles with or without oleyl alcohol. The surfactants used are amphoteric (N,N-dimethyl-N-lauroyl lysine, DMLL; N,N,N-trimethyl-N-lauroyl lysine, TMLL; N,N-dimethyl-N-(carboxymethyl)-lauryl ammonium, DMCL), anionic (sodium dodecyl sulfate, SDS) and nonionic (alkyl polyoxyethylene ethers).The maximum additive concentration of oleyl alcohol by pure surfactants is larger by nonionic surfactants than by others.For a nonionic surfactant system mixed with DMLL, the mixing effect of surfactant on the increase in the MAC is not recognized. While, for DMLL mixed with SDS, the MAC becomes larger than that by pure surfactants. This may be attributed to the fact that the large micellar size will result in increasing the maximum additive concentration.  相似文献

In the case of cationic polystyrene latex, the adsorption of anionic surfactants involves a strong electrostatic interaction between both the particle and the surfactant, which may affect the conformation of the surfactant molecules adsorbed onto the latex-particle surface. The adsorption isotherms showed that adsorption takes place according to two different mechanisms. First, the initial adsorption of the anionic surfactant molecules on cationic polystyrene surface would be due to the attractive electrostatic interaction between both ionic groups, laying the alkyl-chains of surfactant molecules flat on the surface as a consequence of the hydrophobic interaction between these chains and the polystyrene particle surface, which is predominantly hydrophobic. Second, at higher surface coverage the adsorbed surfactant molecules may move into a partly vertical orientation with some head groups facing the solution. According to this second mechanism the hydrophobic interactions of hydrocarbon chains play an important role in the adsorption of surfactant molecules at high surface coverage. This would account for the very high negative mobilities obtained at surfactant concentration higher than 5×10–7 M. Under high surface-coverage conditions, some electrophoretic mobility measurements were performed at different ionic strength. The appearance of a maximum in the mobility-ionic strength curves seems to depend upon alkyl-chain length. Also the effects of temperature and pH on mobilities of anionic surfactant-cationic latex particles have been studied. The mobility of the particles covered by alkyl-sulphonate surfactants varied with the pH in a similar manner as it does with negatively charged sulphated latex particles, which indicates that the surfactant now controls the surface charge and the hydrophobic-hydrophilic character of the surface.Dedicated to the memory of Dr. Safwan Al-Khouri IbrahimPresented at the Euchem Workshop on Adsorption of Surfactants and Macromolecules from Solution, Åbo (Turku), Finland, June 1989  相似文献

Static light scattering has been measured on aqueous NaI solutions of dodecylpyridinium iodide (DPI) over NaI concentrations from 0 to 0.05 M. Reduced intensity of scattered light increases with increasing DPI concentration above the critical micelle concentration. The Debye plot is generally a curve with an initially positive slope and with a weakly convex, upward curvature, when the NaI concentration ranges from 0 to 0.005 M. The molecular weight of the spherical micelle of DPI is 28400 in water, and it increases slightly with increasing NaI concentration. The initial slope decreases with increasing NaI concentration and changes from positive to negative across 0.007 M NaI, which is the threshold for the sphere-rod transition and where the micelle has a molecular weight of 34400. At NaI concentrations from 0.01 to 0.05 M, the Debye plot is a curve with an initially negative slope and with a convex, downward curvature. The magnitudes of slope and curvature are larger, and the rodlike micelles of DPI have larger molecular weight and stronger mutual interaction, as the NaI concentration increases. The linear double logarithmic relationship between molecular weight and ionic strength holds for spherical and rodlike micelles, respectively.  相似文献

The phenomenological mean-field theory describing concentration fluctuations and spinodal decomposition of binary mixtures of long flexible macromolecules is generalized to mixtures under steady shear flow. This shear flow leads to a partial orientation and stretching of the coils, as well as to an anisotropic deformation of concentration fluctuations. Generalizing the approach of Onuki and Kawasaki, we obtain the collective scattering function describing these concentration fluctuations in the mixture under shear flow. The mechanism of the collapse process of monolayers of poly-L-alanine and of its mixtures with poly--methyl-L-glutamate was studied at the water/air interface at temperatures of 15°, 20°, 25°, and 30 °C.From measurements of the collapse surface pressure as a function of molar ratios and from the determination of the collapse kinetics, as well as from ellipsometrical measurements of the thickness of the film, the complete solubility of the components, even in the collapsed phase, was deduced.Furthermore, activation energies and values ofG*,H*, andS* in relationship to the kinetics of this process were deduced; it was shown that this process is constituted of a first phase of nucleation and of a second phase of growth both for the poly-L-alanine alone and for its mixtures with poly--methyl-L-glutamate.  相似文献

Static light scattering has been measured for aqueous NaCl solutions of cetyltrimethylammonium chloride (CTAC) at 25 °C. While spherical micelles are formed above the critical micelle concentration for 0–1.5 M NaCl solutions, rodlike micelles are formed at NaCl concentrations higher than 1.18 M.The aggregation number of rodlike micelles increases markedly with increasing NaCl concentration, and it is as large as 11400 in 4.0 M NaCl. Long rodlike micelles are semiflexible and behave like wormlike chains. Their contour length and persistence length have been calculated as 630 and 46.4 nm, respectively, in 4.0 M NaCl.Rodlike micelles overlap and entangle together to form a network in semidilute solutions above a threshold micelle concentration. The radius of gyration of the blob can be scaled for its molecular weight with the exponent, 0.55, coinciding with that for isolated rodlike micelles in dilute solutions. The scaling laws for the reciprocal envelope of light scattered in the semidilute regime and for the molecular weight and the radius of gyration of the blob are also discussed with reference to the micelle concentration.  相似文献

Thermally stimulated polarization (TSP) and depolarization (TSD) experiments have been performed with two grades of polypropylene and some respective CaCO3-filled composites containing small amounts of nonionic surfactant (0–2 wt%). The effects of electrode blocking, electrode materials on the thermally stimulated currents, and reproducibility of the measurements have been studied. The effect of water vapor adsorbed from the ambient air on the AC dielectric properties and on the thermally stimulated polarization behavior has been determined.The addition of either CaCO3 or surfactant to PP decreases the intensity of the c depolarization current peak in the pre-melting region, while the presence of both components increases the current. Partial discharges are present in poly propylene/CaCO3 composites under high voltages if neither water vapor nor a coherent surfactant layer is present at the matrix/filler interface.A short literature survey is presented on the TSC studies of polyolefins and their composites, and various mechanisms responsible for the observed changes are discussed, including interfacial polarization, trap redistribution through nucleation, and oriented adsorption.  相似文献

The enthalpy of benzylalcohol (BzOH) solution has been determined as a function of alcohol concentration in aqueous trimethyltetradecylammonium bromide (TTAB) solutions in the presence of sodium sulfite or sodium sulfate up to high salt concentration. The electrolytes studied do not seem to induce TTAB sphere-torod transition at least up to 0.6 mol/kg of salt. Comparison with the enthalpic behavior of BzOH in sodium dodecylsulfate solutions and with that of 1-pentanol in both cationic and anionic micellar solutions suggests that the solubilization of BzOH in TTAB solutions is specifically favored by intramolecular interactions between alcohol molecules within the cationic micelles. The replacement of the bromide counterions by the sulfite or sulfate ions has been studied using potentiometry with an ionselective electrode in the case of trimethylhexadecylammonium bromide (CTAB). No difference could be detected between the effects of either divalent anions on the rate of change of the bromide ion-condensation with the salt/surfactant concentration ratioR. The degree of counter-ion condensation on micellar surface depends not only on theR values, but also on the total surfactant concentration.  相似文献
