When does the giant component bring unsatisfiability?

We study random constraint satisfaction problems using the wide class of models introduced by the author [36], which includes various forms of random SAT and other well-studied problems. We determine precisely which of these models remain almost surely satisfiable when the number of clauses is increased beyond the point at which a giant component appears in the underlying constraint hypergraph. This work is supported by an NSERC Research Grant and a Sloan Research Fellowship. Much of this work was done while the author was a Visiting Researcher at Microsoft Research.     

When does the Hessian determinant vanish identically?

In 1851, Hesse claimed that the Hessian determinant of a homogeneous polynomial f vanishes identically if and only if the projective hypersurface V (f) is a cone. We follow the lines of the 1876 paper of Gordan and Noether to give a proof of Hesses claim for curves and surfaces. For higher dimensional hypersurfaces, the claim is wrong in general. We review the construction of polynomials with vanishing Hessian determinant but V (f) not being a cone. For three dimensional hypersurfaces the latter gives, again, the complete answer to the question asked in the title.

When does a T-junction require a left-turn lane?

A four-state, ergodic Markov chain is used to model a T-junction on a narrow, two-lane, major road. The states are defined more realistically than by previous authors. A formula is obtained for the proportion of traffic configurations in which cars travelling one way are brought to a halt by those turning left onto the minor road. This formula is obtained as a function of four parameters: the mean traffic flows in each direction, the probability that a car on the major road will turn left at the junction and the minimum time gap, in the oncoming flow of traffic, which that manouevre requires. If this proportion is higher than is deemed acceptable, then a left-turn is needed.
