In this article we demonstrate that every harmonic map from a closed Riemannian manifold into a Hilbert Grassmannian has image contained within a finite-dimensional Grassmannian.

We study harmonic maps from Riemann surfaces M to the loop spaces ΩG of compact Lie groups G, using the twistor approach. We conjecture that harmonic maps of the Riemann sphere ℂℙ1 into ΩG are related to Yang-Mills G-fields on ℝ4.

In this paper, we can prove that any non‐degenerate strongly harmonic map ? from a compact Berwald manifold with nonnegative general Ricci curvature to a Landsberg manifold with non‐positive flag curvature must be totally geodesic, which generalizes the result of Eells and Sampson ([2]). 相似文献

Let Ψ be the geodesic flow associated with a two-sided invariant metric on a compact Lie group. In this paper, we prove that every ergodic measure μ of Ψ is supported on the unit tangent bundle of a flat torus. As an application, all Lyapunov exponents of μ are zero hence μ is not hyperbolic. Our underlying manifolds have nonnegative curvature (possibly strictly positive on some sections), whereas in contrast, all geodesic flows related to negative curvature are Anosov hence every ergodic measure is hyperbolic. 相似文献

In this paper we give an asymptotic formula for a matrix integral which plays a crucial role in the approach of Diaconis et al. to random matrix eigenvalues. The choice of parameter for the asymptotic analysis is motivated by an invariant-theoretic interpretation of this type of integral. For arbitrary regular irreducible representations of arbitrary connected semisimple compact Lie groups, we obtain an asymptotic formula for the trace of permutation operators on the space of tensor invariants, thus extending a result of Biane on the dimension of these spaces.

A Mackey functor M is a structure analogous to the representationring functor H R(H) encoding good formal behaviour under inductionand restriction. More explicitly, M associates an abelian groupM(H) to each closed subgroup H of a fixed compact Lie groupG, and to each inclusion K H it associates a restriction map and an induction map . This paper gives an analysis of thecategory of Mackey functors M whose values are rational vectorspaces: such a Mackey functor may be specified by giving a suitablycontinuous family consisting of a Q 0(WG(H))-module V(H) foreach closed subgroup H with restriction maps V(K) V(K) wheneverK is normal in K and K/K is a torus (a continuous Weyl-toralmodule). We show that the category of rational Mackeyfunctors is equivalent to the category of rational continuousWeyl-toral modules. In Part II this will be used to give analgebraic analysis of the category of rational Mackey functors, showing in particular that it has homological dimension equalto the rank of the group. 1991 Mathematics Subject Classification:19A22, 20C99, 22E15, 55N91, 55P42, 55P91. 相似文献

In this paper we study the relationship between factorization problems on SU(2n) or more generally on compact Lie groups G and time optimal control problems. Both types of problems naturally arise in physics, such as in quantum computing and in controlling coupled spin systems (NMR‐spectroscopy). In the first part we show that certain factorization problems can be reformulated as time optimal control problems on G. In the second part a necessary condition for the existence of finite optimal factorizations is discussed. At the end we illustrate our results by an example on Euler angle factorizations. We show that there are characters of compact, connected, non-abelian groups that approximate random choices of signs. The work was motivated by Kronecker's theorem on the independence of exponential functions and has applications to thin sets.

In this article, we introduce a new method for manufacturing harmonic morphisms from semi-Riemannian manifolds. This is employed
to yield a variety of new examples from the compact Lie groups SO(n), SU(n) and Sp(n) equipped with their standard Riemannian metrics. We develop a duality principle and show how this can be used to construct
the first known examples of harmonic morphisms from the non-compact Lie groups , SU
*(2n), , SO
*(2n), SO(p, q), SU(p, q) and Sp(p, q) equipped with their standard dual semi-Riemannian metrics.

Let G be a compact Lie group. Let X, Y be free G-spaces. In this paper, we consider the question of the existence of G-maps f : X → Y . As a consequence, we obtain a theorem about the existence of ℤp-coincidence points.

We study Lie group structures on groups of the form C
∞(M, K), where M is a non-compact smooth manifold and K is a, possibly infinite-dimensional, Lie group. First we prove that there is at most one Lie group structure with Lie algebra
for which the evaluation map is smooth. We then prove the existence of such a structure if the universal cover of K is diffeomorphic to a locally convex space and if the image of the left logarithmic derivative in is a smooth submanifold, the latter being the case in particular if M is one-dimensional. We also obtain analogs of these results for the group of holomorphic maps on a complex manifold with values in a complex Lie group K. We further show that there exists a natural Lie group structure on if K is Banach and M is a non-compact complex curve with finitely generated fundamental group.

We show that the singular set of a weak stationary solution of the heat flow of harmonic maps between Riemannian manifolds and , with compact, is removable if it has ``parabolic codimension' greater than two and the initial energy is sufficiently small.

Word maps on a group are defined by substitution of formal words. Lubotzky gave a characterization of the images of word maps in finite simple groups, and a consequence of his characterization is the existence of a group G such that the image of some word map on G is not closed under inversion. We show that there are only two groups with order less than 108 with the property that there is a word map with image not closed under inversion. We also study this behavior in nilpotent groups. 相似文献
